  • Sally is best known in the United States for her roles as Gloria Stivic, the daughter of Archie and Edith Bunker (played by Carroll O'Connor and Jean Stapleton) on All in the Family, for which she won two Emmy awards, and as Babette on Gilmore Girls. She was the voice of Charlene Sinclair on the ABC sitcom Dinosaurs and Rebecca Cunningham on the Disney animated series TaleSpin.
My colleague, Janet Langhart is the interviewer on this one.

She is one of the most down to earth celebrities I've ever seen. In All in the Family she played a character that I felt a huge connection to, and was super relatable. I feel so bad that she didn't get more work because she killed every role she's ever done.

It's refreshing to see a celebrity be so naked and honest in expressing their vulnerabilities, especially when the source of their burdens is showbiz itself. Many actors wouldn't dare, both to protect their image and out of fear of how it may hurt their career. Gloria wasn't my favorite character on All in the Family, and her other roles passed me by, but Struthers certainly has my respect.

As stated below, typecasting can be a ‘killer ‘ to a career. Actors/actresses can be on an iconic show, and whatever they do afterwards never comes close to their early success. Just goes to show how fame can be so fleeting.

She never received the recognition she deserved; Sally Struthers wasn't given the plot lines and the dialogue, except for being a foil to Mike's posturing, her father's bigotry -- even Edith's lovingness was echoed by Sally Struther's warm presence.

Sally did get one shot after All in the Family... a spinoff, of sorts, where she played a single mom working for a Veterinarian -- called, "Gloria." But the show was canceled after 1 season. Acting is a tough profession. A college classmate of mine won a Tony award, then 4 years of mostly unemployment, then.. another Tony award... then back to looking for work. Not everyone is Meryl Streep.

@@marygraham3189 The problem with "Gloria" is that it paired TWO very able supporting actors, but there was no lead. Imagine, if Gloria had left Queens with her son and gone to Vermont to work in Bob Newhart's Inn? Sally might have been perfect working off of Newhart, just as she was perfection working off of O'Conner/Stapleton and Reiner.

First of all, she put on a lot of weight. Second, she was more or less blackballed when she insisted that her show "Gloria" make absolutely no mention of the All In The Family characters or connection so as to allow the character of Gloria to grow in its own right. This angered Carroll O'Connor, as he helped to put her show together, and he appeared in the pilot episode. Moreover, Gloria aired immediately after Archie Bunker's Place, and was essentially feeding off of it.

atlantic1119 I agree with you on everything except the weight part. Yes, she gained weight. However, she didn’t know how to market herself properly, in spite of the weight gain, causing her to panic, resulting in accepting shit material. On “All in the Family,” she was trying to be regarded as a sex symbol, instead of developing her acting craft. She should have focused on quality, like Rob Reiner did. There are plenty of big and/or overweight women that were successful in Hollywood. Bea Arthur was a big woman that was well-respected. Rue McClanahan was kinda thick. Nell Carter was fat. Roseanne was (and is) fat. They all marketed themselves in a way that showcased their talent....and made it, as they raised their standards and was patient. Sally should have done the same.

I liked Sally Struthers as Gloria in the first several seasons of "All in the Family," but somewhere around season five or six, Gloria became rude, obnoxious and abusive. The part was written this way, of course, but Struthers' over-the-top performance didn't help, and I'm sure that's one reason producers and directors didn't line up to hire her once her run as Gloria was over.

Sally's Gloria character never really got any great lines in the show. Furthermore she wanted to quit after the fifth season. She even held up the production after the shows summer hiatus. Her lawyer said she didn't want to be known as the Gloria character forever (even though she is and forever will be) The producers had a replacement ready for her but she would still be under contract and not allowed to work anywhere else for three years so they worked something out and she got back to work. Word of mouth gets around and Lear was a heavy hitter at the time. So I speculate producers probably learned about the production hold up and opted to not hire her for future projects in fear of her being difficult with them.
