How to make | Solar Water Purifier / Distillation Syster with Plastic Bottles

  • It takes a lot of energy for water to vaporize. While a certain amount of energy is needed to raise the temperature of a kilogram of water from 0 to 100 Celcius (C), it takes five and one-half times that much to chnage it from water at 100°C to water vapor at 100°C. Practically all this energy, however, is given back when the water vapor condenses... This is the way we get fresh water in the clouds from the oceans, by solar distillation. All the fresh water on earth has been solar distilled
    Since one of the main goals of solar distillation is to provide a clean source of water, proper disinfection after construction is crucial. Some less intensive methods of cleaning could be use of soap or laundry detergent. A glass cover is more advantageous with respect to maintenance than a plastic cover, due to the electrostatic properties of plastic that can make it a beacon for detritus. The brine left over after thorough distillation can be harvested for sea salt, as it is now a valuable commodity in its own righ.

      And I think you could do it with larger bottles. A pair of those big water cooler jugs should work fine. (They're blue though, so they'll lose a little efficiency there.)

    To boost efficiency, add a reflector pointed at the bottom bottle, and/or paint the bottom "dirty" bottle black. That is a really useful video IMO. Thank you very much for that idea. It may in fact save lives.

      @@harji5378 A mirror or other highly reflective surface will redirect sunlight that passes through the bottles/water back into the water, increasing the evaporation rate and thus the efficiency of the distiller. Black paint might be better because I believe it will convert higher frequencies of light to infrared, which means additional heat.

    It would be a good idea to mark each bottle as either "Upper," or "Lower." This keeps you from contaminating your fresh water by collecting it in the bottle that had Dirty Diaper Water in it, the last distillation.

In addition to coloring bottom bottle black and adding a reflector, may be to add a freznel lens ir other type of material to magnify the suns energy,, if possible for a survival use in front of the bottom bottle to concentrate the suns rays. • @scotttovey
      @scotttovey 2 года назад +6

      What distilled water issue?
      You distill water by bringing the temperature of water up to it's boiling point causing it to turn to vapor. When the vapor collects on a cool surface, it condensates and turns back into water.
      That is the whole distillation process.
      The water collected in the upper bottle therefore; is distilled but not guaranteed 100% pure as there are molecules such as chloride that have a lower boiling temperature than the boiling temperature of water.
      To insure the water is purified, you need to filter it with an activated charcoal filter designed to trap those molecules.

      Hopefully you can find water clean enough not to have to worry about that, but if not there are things that can be done to mitigate it. You could filter and/or boil the water before pouring it into the lower bottle. If you have no means to do that at the least you could leave the top bottle off of it as it heats up and releases most of those aromatics before screwing it on.

    I wonder if you've calculated how much heat energy your system would need to accumulate to produce the volume of water you show, over "a few hours". Certainly, there is no place on earth, short of putting it in lava on an active volcano, that would accomplish what you're supposedly demonstrating here. What you've done is falsify your video. Which is a shame, because this method does work, up to a point.

      Shade the top bottle so it is a lower temperature. While having the bottom half of the bottom bottle darker raises the temp in that area making the system more effective. PS for the ones suggesting to boil the resulting clear water..... That does not help as the clean water will boil off and be lost. For the ones concerned about the lack of minerals in the resulting distilled water... minerals should and do come from what you eat. Just made a couple, ..... Two days latter,....still nothing!
    Two months latter...still nothing, so
    Soooo I fabricated a bigger one out of a big bearal. With the larger size I am only getting about a gallon a week of clean water at around 85-90deg days. I saw a pyramid type design made of glass on utube which I think may work a little better with more surface area to catch the condensation. So even though it works it would have to be very large in order to get enough clean water to survive on unless you install a water heater element to heat up the water faster like I did, just haven't tried hooking up the 220v yet to test it ;)

    I see some comments are questioning your honesty in making this video, but that is not my concern. I would like to ask this, for every LITRE of dirty water, what is the average amount of clean water one might achieve through evaporation under full Sunlight? If I am able to lay the dirty water bottle at a 30-45 deg angle on foil and cover the upper bottle with something to reflect heat away, is it likely to increase the amount of pure distilled water collected? Is there any reason why I cannot use a larger bottle for catchment at the top than the dirty water bottle at the bottom? Thank you in advance of any replies.

    • @Laurel-Crowned
      @Laurel-Crowned 4 года назад +3

      This is a very poor design, mostly due to its size. I fabricated one out of a large bearal and only get about a gallon a week of clean water. I'm sure all the clean water would eventually evaporate it just depends on how dirty the water is or what's in it. My well water is so bad that if I hooked it up to misters whatever is under them will be white in minutes. All you're doing here is catching the evaporated water, so there many different ways to construct one of these purifiers. Just be sure it's air tight when your done!

      @@Laurel-Crowned White from what, Limescale? I don't have Mains Water, I reply on a 30 metre deep borehole and the area has a high Limescale content so I had to install a water softener inline to which I add salt to make a saline mixture - it seems to help a lot. However, the local water in my area coming from a small creek is most probably high in Nitrates, Nitrites and God only know what else. Our local water springs are labelled as this water is unfit to drink without treatment, but they don't explain what treatment. From a survival point of view, I am just looking at my options of purifying water from that creek in addition to gaining a drink from Transpiration and Evaporation and some kind of portable still as I don't wish to rely on filters or purifying tablets. Drinking the water filtered and boiled is probably not going to harm me in the short term, but in the longer term, it must have detrimental effects.

The only thing that could tag along is other volatile contaminants like alcohol that would also distill out with the water. But no dirt, bacteria, viruses, protozoa, anything like that, will be able to travel along with the distilled water.
