The studio version of this song is a multi-layered sonic treat. The live versions are fun for fans, but the first experience of Led Zeppelin songs should really be their studio recordings. Jimmy Page's studio prowess is another facet of the band's music.

I would not trade anything to be young again now and miss those experiences. Only a handful of bands made the hair on my neck stand up as when you hear Bonzo's drum and they launched into "Rock & Roll" to open the 75 concert. I still feel it.

  • @jackgilchrist
    @jackgilchrist Год назад +46

You nailed it Amber. 🙂 That's exactly what the Ocean is, the crowds at the concerts. And the 4 year old (3 in the studio version, he updated her age over the years) who won Plant's heart and who he was singing all his songs to is his daughter Carmen. Sweet sentiment... though I got to say, I really hope he wasn't singing *all* his songs to her. Some of them shouldn't be sung to children or to daughters. 😮
Jay, Led Zep is a British band. But they were inspired and influenced by a lot of American music, especially blues, early rock and roll, old school R&B, etc., so I guess you could call it British American rock.

I’m 58 now. So I was in high school in the very early 80s. So of course, I knew of Led Zeppelin, and I liked some of their songs, but I didn’t pay close enough attention to just how amazingly great Led Zeppelin was. Some of their songs I liked, but I didn’t even know that some of those songs were Led Zeppelin. Tbh, I didn’t fully understand the hype. Now that I’m older, I realize just how BRILLIANT the music of Led Zeppelin is. I now believe that Led Zeppelin has to be one of the Top 5 artists in the history of music since the 1960s to the present. I don’t think there’s ever been another artist like them, and I don’t think there ever will be again. They are a multigenerational talent.

Tragically, Karac died at age 5 in 1977 from a viral infection while Led Zeppelin was touring the States 😪It devastated Robert Plant and his family... he didn't perform in concert again until 2 years later in 1979.

As a Led Zeppelin final also add lyrically. Led Zeppelin is quite phenomenal not obviously on every track, but it boggles one’s mind when they don’t take the lyrics into account. It’s very loud music on purpose the production quality on the records was absolutely excellent, especially given that timeframe.
I can imagine how soul crushing it is to listen to what now it’s called music, and once you hear music from back in the day, that’s actually done by real musicians, real singing and everything organic as opposed to now, which is all crap or at least 99.9999% of it is.😊

I would love to see you react to The Song Remains the Same and The Rain Song from MSG live concert, the transition is wonderful. It satisfies J’s rock edge and Amber’s appreciation for softer rock.
To see a younger Zep live, check out their Royal Albert Hall performances such as How Many More Times and What Is and Should Never Be.
Amber totally got the lyrics correct; the song is about “Ocean” of fans at concerts and the reference to 4 yrs old is his daughter. He changes her age based on her actual age at time of performance. The published version of song has her age at 3 when he wrote it.

Always love your reactions. There's a rock blues Led Zeppelin song you haven't reacted to, and based on some of the things you said in your reaction, I think you will love this song. It's early Led Zeppelin, and they play like they did when I saw 3 of their concerts between 1969 and 1971. The sound quality and video are very good. The song is I Can't Quit You Babe performed live at Royal Albert Hall 1970. If you decide to check it out, it is important to get this particular performance.

That was the meaning behind of the "Ocean" was just that!!! the sea of people at their shows. Led Zepplin was the main start of "STADIUM ROCK" filling football stadiums with almost every show.

The Ocean was about Led Zeppelin's fans and Robert Plant said, in an interview many years ago that the big audiences at Led Zeppelin concerts reminded him of the sea. Like a sea of people meaning the Ocean reference and title of the song. Also, the four-year-old he was a referring to is Robert Plant's daughter who is his oldest child, Carmen. Who was four years old in 1973. He adored his little girl who is a grown woman now. I am a lady in her fifties who loves classic rock and Led Zeppelin was always one of my favorite bands.

Seeing Led Zeppelin in concert in the early 70s was a musical experience that can't be described. I was lucky enough to see them twice back then.

Great! What a riff! When the song was released in the Houses of the holy LP Robert sang "She´s only three years old..." so I guess this performance was done a year later so the child is four years old now.

I count myself lucky to have seen Led Zep live several times. Even had back stage passes for their '77 Chicago show but Robert Plant's son passed away a couple of days before the gig and they, of course, cancelled. Always a great show. I may be old but I've seen all the great bands. Cheers....

Back in the day it would cost around $18 a ticket to see a big-name band in concert. I could have bought tickets to see Led Zepplin in 1977. But never got around to it. I could kick myself in the head. I did finally see him (Robert Plant)in 2018 performing at the Austin City Limits venue in Austin. Even though he was much older, he was amazing.

I was blessed to see them live in 1975 at Keil Auditorium in St. Louis. They played for over 3 hours. It was wonderful, but also sad in a way, as I knew I had seen the best band I would ever see. The live clips are from that tour.

I was lucky enough to see them in September 1971. I sat in the 12th row center stage. They kicked off the show with The Immigrant Song and played Heartbreaker, What Is And What Should Never Be, That's The Way, Going To California, Dazed And Confused, Moby Dick, Stairway To Heaven, Whole Lotta Love, Black Dog and more. I paid $6.05 for my ticket and still have the stub.

Amber has it correct, The Ocean was a song about the fans and how the multitude of people in the audience looked like an ocean as they bobbed their heads up and down, resembling the ocean waves. The 4 year old girl who won his heart is a reference to his daughter, Carmen. On the album, he sings three years old but, clearly by the time of this concert, she's 4. Jay, it's ironic you called this "American rock" since it's by a British band. 😄By the way, it wasn't JPJ doing the shredding, it was Jimmy Page. JPJ (John Paul Jones) is playing bass. If you guys love Zep so much, why isn't there any of their merch on your walls? 😉
