  • This video just shows my thoughts on analouge heaters really they shouldn't be used for koi ponds as they can't keep the water at a steady enough temperature.

    I bought that cloverleaf heater off a hottub company for only £50.
    Exactly the same as the cloverleaf without the branding.
    Followed your video on how to install the leds and it works a treat.
    Mine is set to 10c and works spot on.

    I will be re-digging my pond (adding 3 foot square to it) was thing to put insulation in it as it has I 1 foot wall round it.
    Is this a good idea or could I have issues in the summer? I live in London and summers can get hot it’s a none heated pond.

    Interesting comparison between analog and digital. I wish I could heat my pond but regardless of the heater type it would cost a fortune. Temperature here this morning in Oshawa, Southern Ontario, Canada is -15c with the wind chill and we're not into our coldest months yet. Jan., Feb. and Mar. are when it really gets cold. 🥶 🥶 🥶

    Hi Adam thanks for the video. I have an inkbird wifi digital thermostat on a 1kw heater it's quite useful as you can set temp differentials and max and min temps. Let's you know if temps drop etc if your out. I also have one on my air source heat pump but it's connected to a relay as the inkbirds are only rated at 10 amp. The WiFi thing is useful for me as you can monitor the temps from anywhere. Thanks again.

    • @AdamJulyan
      @AdamJulyan  2 года назад

      you'd be better off with an Air source heat pump less messing about to install, safer and if your using your houses boiler the pond can really lower its performance making the house and hot water system colder.
      I know a few people that used to use gas boilers and have switched to ASHP.

    Hi Adam great channel and video. I’m after some advice. I have a 400 gallon quarantine tank and I heat it with a 500 watt aquarium heater which I’ve used for about 4 years and I heat it to 20c but the heater is on all the time so I brought plug which I can plug the heater in and it will tell me how much electric I’m useing to my horror it’s costing me £15 per week could you advise me on what heater I should get to bring the cost down on by the way the qt is in the garage and it’s got a lid on cheers mate

    • @AdamJulyan
      @AdamJulyan  2 года назад

      Insulation would make the biggest difference so make sure it's insulated as well as possible.
      all resistive heaters should be the same so if you used a 1kw heater it should only need to be on half the time but cost the same amount although for some reason this doesn't seam to be the case a lot of times I have seen a 1kw pond heater be more efficient than two 500w aquarium heaters so that could be something to try if your thinking of upgrading although i wouldn't go more than 1kw it would be too much.

    I was going to run my pond off of solar panels and battery back up is it possible to do? How many and what watt panels would you think would work?
    I have a 10000 litre pond a 3500 lph eco pump for skimmer and a 13000 lph for filters and two 30 watt uv lights would love to heat it as well any thoughts?

    • @AdamJulyan
      @AdamJulyan  2 года назад +1

      I wouldn't say its impossible just unreasonable you'd probably need at least 4kw of solar to keep it powered in winter which would maybe be a bit excessive in summer so you might be able to run a heater in summer off the waste electric. you'd be better off using the electric for the house Ive got 7.5kw of solar and it does a good job in summer but not so much in winter.

    • @AdamJulyan
      @AdamJulyan  2 года назад

      The air temp needs to be warmer than the pond or you need a good dehumidifier.
      If its a cold building you need a desiccant dehumidifier if its warm you need a compressor dehumidifier.
      I 100% recommend a dehumidifier as the moisture gets everywhere and destroys everything that you can't see.

      Heaters are normal a simple solenoid switch and are around £40. I brought a digital controller to override and control it. People losing thousands of pounds in rare fish due to a cheap heater. I know in the marine aquarium hobby they suggest replacing them every year for that very reason. Your 8kw would be eye watering, at Nearly 32amp I would have to be careful not to trip the house I only have 60amp total.

    Would a analogue 2kw heater set to maximum but on a timer to come on between 00:30am and 4:30am for octopus go 5p/kw work well and save money it would stop the pond dropping in temperature overnight and if well insulated maybe even hold the temperature throughout the day any thoughts ???

    • @AdamJulyan
      @AdamJulyan  2 года назад +1

      Yeah that would work pretty well although I wouldn't set it to max it would work well sometimes bet when the weather warms up or a mild night it might just jump up a bit too much. I know people that do that so it warms the pond maybe 2DegC while the electric is cheep then it can slowly lose that 2DegC through the rest of the day and then repeat.

    How many gallons you got in your indoor pond ?
    Do you get any kind of condensation when running high temperature in pond

    • @AdamJulyan
      @AdamJulyan  2 года назад +1

      it's 9000gal and yes the air temp needs to be 2DegC warmer than the water although in summer when the pond gets to 25DegC I tend to turn off the heating and use a dehumidifier when I can't have the doors or windows open.
      I didn't used to use the dehumidifier as it only really gets humid when the nights start getting a little colder and the pond is still warm.
      This time of year its fine the 26DegC QT tank gives off tones of humidity into the 22DegC room but it condenses on the main pond as its only 18DegC so it's actually pretty dry as the pond is sucking all the humidity out of the air.
