This video got me into the Flaming Lips AND an interest in CAN when it came out, thought I'd leave a comment saying thanks, happens to be 10 years later !!
Very diverse! From Classical to Prog to Indie to Rap. I love it. Im a huge punk fan and for a long time, I couldn't bring myself to like prog because I thought punks weren't supposed to like prog. Now I am a huge fan of Porcupine Tree and In Gowan Ring (who are more Psychadelic Folk). Reagan Youth changed their name to House of God and became a Pychadelic band before Dave's tragic death (May he rest in peace). Variety is the spice of life.
That's why I hate the punk TREND. "punks aren't SUPPOSED to like Prog..." I listen to everything like Krist does. Punks follow way to many rules! They are very narrow-minded because they only like ppl who are similar to them. They hate diversity. A bunch of hypocrites. If they wanted to be individuals they would never be punks in the first place. Wanna listen to the greatest Prog band ever? Listen to King Crimson,"In the Court of the Crimson King Album." Also listen to the live version of Easy Money
Reagan Youth are my favorite band. I also love Led Zepplin, The Beetles, the composer Vangelis, Frank Zappa, Pink Floyd, the Cro Mags, and even the alternative country artist Daughn Gibson (he uses loops, and computer generated sounds, and his music is very haunting. Also his voice sounds exactly like Johnny Cash, who I am also a fan of.)
Krautrock is incredible, Can, Amon Duul, Neu! Harmonia, Faust, all amazing bands that were decades ahead of their time. I never would think a guy like Krist Novoselic would be into music like that.
How do you explain the Lil Wayne ablum, god Krist please listen to good rap. I love Krist as a musician and he is my favorite bass player ever but seriously that album is garbage, he needs to go back to his nephew and find something better.
Jacob Ray If it was a Lil Wayne song from 2011 (after he fell off) then I'd agree with you, but the album he has in his hands is Tha Carter 3 which is an INCREDIBLE album. If you don't agree you probably think "good rap" consists of artists like Immortal Technique and Dan Le Sac + Scroobius Pip, and don't understand the impact or influence Lil Wayne had on rap as a whole (Which is immense. He's easily the most influential of the past 10 years.)
Krist Anthony Novoselic!!!!!!! Former bassist player from my favorite band of all my whole life!!!!!!!!!!!! I LOVE Nirvana!!!!!!!!!!!! Forever!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
every record Kris pulled out was right on target, insofar as his taste from obscure to main stream - he doesn't let labels, genres, crap like that define his curiosity or love for music. That is the tell-tale sign of someone from our time in the mid to late 80's and coming of age
All you people claiming "Kurt would hated Lil Wayne if he were alive today": how the fuck would you know? Do you think he only listened to diy underground punk bands? He was a big fan of pop and rap music and he also wasn't afraid to be controversial. Claiming to know how a dead person would feel about something that wasn't around during their lifetime is just dumb and arrogant.
+James Oakes he listened to rap that had more of a political standpoint...but he was disgusted by sexism...and lil wayne promotes a lot of sexism with his lyrics...and I think krist has an interesting sense of humor...I buy that he might be into m.i.a....but it's just like krist to fool people into thinking he likes lil wayne because he thinks it's funny...and it is funny...but he is also disgusted by sexism...just like kurt was...if you read about a dead person's personality and listen to the people who knew him/her...you'll know how they would feel if they were alive today...and if kurt were alive today...he would never have taken a selfie more than once or twice and he would probably never use a hashtag either...he hated society and it's customs...and when you look at the way things are now...you would find that people were better off back then...no one was glued to their phone every two seconds and loosing their social skills because all they know how to do now is socialize poorly over facebook...do some research and think logically based on a dead person's personality when they were alive and it's not that hard to imagine how they would be now...
You can speculate all you want, but it's ultimately meaningless since there's no way we can actually confirm it. And even if we could confirm it somehow, it still would be meaningless because it would still just be his opinion and nothing else. Blindly following other peoples' opinion goes against the very essence of punk rock ethos.
James Oakes intelligent people would care about other people's opinions and what they think about certain issues...intelligent people like to discuss matters as a way to get their feelings out and maybe even learn a little more about the world and themselves...stupid people are stubborn and say things like "nobody cares" just like you did...basically ignoring what everyone else thinks even if your point of view may seem kind of fucked up...it's one thing to not care about what other people think of you or certain issues...thats ok...but to go about your day and not even listen? in that case you are giving yourself no room to grow and letting your ego get in the way...but whatever...you can't really convince anyone...a lot of people are insensitive and have no class or regard for other people's feelings...society is nothing but a giant waste basket that contains things we need and things we don't...and as arrogance and stupidity grows into the majority...we toss things that we need straight into the garbage...this will be my last reply...good night and good luck;)
I remember being at an in-store signing for one of my favorite metal groups who shall remain nameless. It was in a Sam Goody record store and I was just a kid and still pretty judgmental when it came to other types of music. I was absolutely amazed and confused when, after the signing, the band's drummer went straight over to the rap and hip hop section and started browsing. Seeing that had a huge impact on my willingness to try new genres. Open your mind. You'll be glad you did.
don't be afraid to like popular music kids. you can enjoy lcd soundsystem and your animal collectives and even your in the aeroplane over the sea, but don't be afraid to say you like something people think you would not... small story, there was this popular music snob that i knew from high school who happened to be delivering a pizza to my house. well it just so happened that he was blaring a paramore song in his car when he pulled up. that's fine, like what you like and never be ashamed... but when he saw me he turned the song way down, so i asked him, "you like the new paramore song, it's kind of catchy" and he replied "no i wasn't even paying attention i had no idea that was on" DON'T BE LIKE DAN THE PIZZA DELIVERY MAN!
Finally! I've always wanted to see Krist on this show! Very eclectic, varying selections, awesome! I can't say I could've guessed he would pick up a Lil' Wayne or MIA record, but thats why these interviews are so cool, because you find out things about artists that you'd never learn about anywhere else!

Probably The Wipers, The Breeders, The Raincoats, Shonen Knife, Le Tigre, Hole, Babes in Toyland, L7, Foo Fighters, maybe some Rage Against the Machine, Kitty, Staind, Seether, The Dandy Warhols, possibly some Against Me, Social Distortion, Rancid, Alice in Chains, even some Metallica, just out of more well known names, who knows? Most likely he would've been buying/ordering music from independent artists from all over! If he had picked Limp Bizqit or Disturbed it would've been done out of irony though-he would've hated them for their typical male cock rock attitudes! Wife beaters, as a more commonly used term! He promoted women in rock! I think he & Krist had a lot in common as far as musical taste goes, so there possibly would've been similarities in their choices as well! One can only guess!
***** bcuz when there is going to be someone interviewing you & you want to share these bands with their viewers, you pick up the vinyl, CDs, tapes, especially if its one you didn't already have, a rare copy, or a collectors item, but the point is drawing attention to the groups! A lot of ppl had said, just one day of Kurt wearing a shirt or mentioning a band had done more for bands then any promotion could've, & he would've known this, hence picking up albums he already had. & besides, how would you know what he already had or not?
Love when he said "España" (I'm from Spain). I love that man. When I think the music of today is broken and it's really commercial I think with him and I have hope that there still are some good musicians alive. Damn it Krist! I love you!
Seems like a genuine guy, he has diverse music tastes and I love Nirvana. Also he dropped some anti- fascist history. Cool! Would love to learn more about his different projects!
Maybe everyone should stop shitting on Kriat for liking Lil Wayne, and instead, maybe respect him for not basing his music taste on what everyone else thinks? Just a thought.
Exactly, I may hate lil waynes music but I won't stop others from listening to what sounds good to them. That is unless they're blaring it out loud next to when I'm working or something...
I love krist so much I wish I could meet him I’m 14 right now and nirvana was my first rock band ever and my inspiration for my bass playing I just am so upset that I’ll probably never be able to meet him because I’m in Georgia 😭
Really like Krist more now that I know he likes Lil Wayne. He isn't close minded or disillusioned by his roots or preferences; he seems to like diversity and anything that sounds good, whether its rap/rock/punk.
Rap is dead and Rock is dead. Everyone is catering to mainstream trends like autotune and synthetic crap. The good rock bands are underground. I really hope music turns its self around again.
Tre Centers First of all, just because something is unknown/underground, doesn't mean it is 'dead'. Also Rock is nowhere near dead. Ghost is a great band that is extremely popular, also rock and every other genre have always followed trends~ Nirvana; started the grunge trend, Guns 'n Roses: part of the 'glamy' trend with bands like Skid-Row and Motley Crue, etc... That has never been different and it will never change.
Oh, I catch the Dead Weather any chance I get. Most people have no clue they exist. People have let it die. We have had this whole "vocal" trend for awhile and I have no idea what is trending at the moment. Not Rock..
Tre Centers like I said, you are saying that rock is dead only because it is no longer mainstream. Depending on where you live however, you hear new bands all the time, that are better in my opinion than a lot of the older bands. At the moment I have moved to SA, but Im Italian and my aunt used to work at a local bar, you'd be surprised how many good bands play there~ many people are very much into metal and rock. Ghost in europe especially is huge, bigger than most other artists that may be popular in America.
I live in Music City, We have a few. They don't get much attention. Not sure who Ghost is until now. Sounds like 80's hairband Bon Jovi or something. "Are you on a Square? Are you living on a Prayer?" Lol
Who cares what Krist likes? Pete Townshend said he likes One Direction, Kurt said he liked the Bay City Rollers, Paul McCartney likes Kanye West (who I'm actually a fan of myself), and Metallica said they like Justin Bieber. To each his own.
And there's absolutely nothing wrong with that. I'm not a fan of Beyonce's music, but she's not bad at all. I think she's overrated definitely (I prefer Mariah Carey's voice over Be's any day), but she's still not bad. I actually do like Justin Timberlake's newer stuff.
It's very annoying that people think Krist is trolling on little Wayne. He's simply eclectic and OPEN MINDED. I go from watching " Hit the Quan" then Chris Stapleton then bring it way back to the old underground east coast Company Flow to the west Hieroglyphics. When I'm feeling weird I'll jam some Tuneyards. Ah fuck, I'm sick of you people. I'm just gonna get stoned to some Led Zeppelin or some Yardbirds.
Nick L Well, obviously their music takes a little more brain activity to make than the stuff Lil Wayne puts out, but that shouldn't mean people can't enjoy it, though I personally don't.
“Liberate music” thats a nice term, thanks for liberating me with your music in my teens krist. I started my first band in the garage because of your music krist
***** he's not trolling, you just aren't familiar enough with rap to understand why someone would praise lil wayne. there are a LOT of reasons to do so.
+im cody 20+ years doesn't make it right to make jokes about someone committing suicide...but a lot of people these days are very insensitive so whatever...just keep it to yourself...
Honestly I wasn't expecting him to pull out Lil Wayne

this guy brings having an open mind to a whole new level
At the end I just sarted yelling, "DDOOLLLL STTEEAAAKK!!" And the neighbor's dog started barking 😂
I love krist so much I wish I could meet him I’m 14 right now and nirvana was my first rock band ever and my inspiration for my bass playing I just am so upset that I’ll probably never be able to meet him because I’m in Georgia 😭
Krist is a fan of Weezy. Respect.
I wanna know where he got that rockin beanie
it was knitted by his grandmother
I'm even more in love
i like this dude way more then grohl
killer Joe what do you not like about him?
Dave grohl is an annoying turd
I’m into this with y’all
A thumb up for Can, another one for versatile musical taste. Respect!
Who cares what Krist likes? Pete Townshend said he likes One Direction, Kurt said he liked the Bay City Rollers, Paul McCartney likes Kanye West (who I'm actually a fan of myself), and Metallica said they like Justin Bieber. To each his own.
john frusciante of the chili peppers said he likes beyonce and justin timberlake
And there's absolutely nothing wrong with that. I'm not a fan of Beyonce's music, but she's not bad at all. I think she's overrated definitely (I prefer Mariah Carey's voice over Be's any day), but she's still not bad. I actually do like Justin Timberlake's newer stuff.
shickenwang
John's god so he loves all !
Good point. Like it even if your supposed cool friends think it sucks. It's your ears.
dave grohl likes gangnam style
I love this guy!
My God this was 10 years ago no wonder he looks OK
more people need to see this. mad respect to Krist. 🙅♂️
It would be really cool if Kurt was still alive in a different time line and him do this What’s In My Bag episode. He had a good taste in music.
Krist is wearing a blanket on his head
Krist 😍❤️❤️❤️
Luckily Krist bought the most acclaimed Lil Wayne album ever
So many different genres!!!! Love it Krist 🤘
I wonder if krist listens to Aesop rock or eyedea.
If not, someone has to let him hear Carbon Carousel!
Rey Calamaan yeah man
I heard eyedea forever ago!!
Just say no to backpack rap
love you Krist!!!!
Good job on that intro
Love ya Krist !! Peace.. Rxx
Rolling Stones, Phillip Glass, Flaming Lips...
and Lil' Wayne...
See anything wrong with this list?
Nick L No?
Bacon and cheese has been stuffed into a crust flaming lips is good thou
jet black Thou is good thou
What i meant was that the Rolling Stones, Philip Glass and the Flaming Lips are a Lotttt more artistic then Lil Wayne
Nick L
Well, obviously their music takes a little more brain activity to make than the stuff Lil Wayne puts out, but that shouldn't mean people can't enjoy it, though I personally don't.
I'm so glad this video is in my life.
GRUNGE ISN'T DEAD!
All rock is dead
hasn't changed since he was young has he haha.
This might be the best in the bag I’ve seen. I knew I always like Krist for a reason, lol.
He's pretty damn cool
I'd love to see a follow up video where he could let us know what he thought of the Flaming Lips record. I loved that one.
man i think he was fucking around when he said he likes lil wayne😂
You do know a lot of Americans have European names because, y'know, the country is built on immigrants...
Thomas van Beusekom you can't really tell when Krist is joking because he's just really funny
And then he pulls out a can record! I love this man!
I see why krist never formed another band like dave grohl did
ye - he's just too honest
Actually, later on I think he did form another band.
ye but only for shits and giggles..sweet 75 did some cool sounding stuff but it was never aimed anywhere near the mainstream like Grohl's endeavours
Eyes Adrift
he did... sweet 75 i think most notable... but of course none of them went on to be like foo
Very eclectic Krist!!!!! Love it!
...little wayne?
NoSuchThing99 he used to be pretty good
“Liberate music” thats a nice term, thanks for liberating me with your music in my teens krist. I started my first band in the garage because of your music krist
why the fuck did nirvanas bass player buy a lil wayne record??
TheConnor1999 maybe because he's actually open-minded about music and doesn't stick to the same 2 genres or bands
Krist is funny and that was just a joke.
***** he's not trolling, you just aren't familiar enough with rap to understand why someone would praise lil wayne. there are a LOT of reasons to do so.
for example??
***** you act like because he was in nirvana he can only listen genres similar to his own.
I’m a huge fan of the Lips and the Floyd and I have yet to hear their version of Dark Side of the Moon.
LOL Trolling at its FINEST. Krist Novoselic still got that younger teen in him.
What is he joking then lol?
+acetate909 Lol, so true bro. Too many cynics who think they know everyone and everything.
i haven't listened to Dark Side of the Moon in ages, my brother used to play it all the time when I was a kid, because it scared me.
LIL WAYNE...WHAT
Went to Amoeba this week for the first time. Great place
Looking like Steve Zizzou's homeless brother.
I love that Scentless Apprentice at the beginning :)
Krist is like the complete opposite of Kurt.
Why's that?
GhostBlade alive?
primetime7326 no chill whatsoever
+im cody 20+ years doesn't make it right to make jokes about someone committing suicide...but a lot of people these days are very insensitive so whatever...just keep it to yourself...
GhostBlade not really but ok
Love krist!!!!!! Seems like a laid back nice guy
"See? I'm an old man but I'm hip!... I like the raps, you know? Little Wayn? He's cool. I'm cool. Cool old man. That's who I am"
and you're "i'm a huge dipshit"
Probably one of the most genuine people I've yet had the pleasure of meeting
