One spring, Dr. Watson and Sherlock Holmes travel to Poldhu in Cornwall for the former's health, but the trip is marred by an odd occurrence. Two residents of the area, Mr. Mortimer Tregennis and Mr. Roundhay, come to Holmes to inform him that Tregennis' sister has passed away and that both of his brothers have become insane. Tregennis had come to their town, "Tredannick Wollas," to pay them a visit. He played them a game of whist before he left. The brothers George and Owen were still conversing and singing at the table when he returned the following morning, and Brenda had died. When she observed them in this condition, the housekeeper passed out. They haven't yet had a visit from the vicar. Tregennis recalled catching one of the brothers taking a quick glance out the window before turning to notice "movement" outside. He said that the devil committed the sin. Even though he still lives separate from his siblings, Mortimer Tregennis thinks the family's disagreement over how to divide the proceeds from the sale of the company has been resolved. The doctor who was called stated that she had been deceased for six hours. He also spent some time after coming sitting on a chair.
