    One of the unforgettable duets of all time, partly because their voices are so different, partly because of the brilliant pairing of these two songs. Neither oversings the other. The ending and last note are chilling.

    Little compares with the astonishing generosity of Judy throughout this wonderful performance ... she constantly defers to her guest. One class act!

    • @elspethcoogan1499
      @elspethcoogan1499 4 года назад +4

      rlmack5 Garland’s generosity toward the guests in their duets on her show is often overlooked. She tended to subdue her vocal prowess in favour of her partner. Some people then resort to comparing Garland with her fellow singer; they mistake this subdued ‘technique’ by saying it demonstrates how much better the other singer is.

      I love that album. Singer Rufus Wainwright is a huge fan. About 15 years ago he did a Judy tribute at the Palladium in London, (Judy played there) recreating the Carnegie concert. I went to it and it was fab. A 2 hour concert and he brought on his sister Martha to sing a couple of songs. He admitted he didnt have Judy's stamina to sing the whole playlist by himself.

    Judy Garland is a Star that descended upon the Earth for only 47 years, but what a 47 years she left us.
    MGM used as a statement for the Studio that "At MGM there are more Stars than their are in the Heavens" and they were right as such a Studio earned the title of the Queen of the Hollywood Studios during the short lived Golden Era of Hollywood. There were many other good Studios (even in Gower Gulch), but MGM was at the top of that list.

      This is so true but I seem to have read in the 1940's she was "Queen of the Hollywood musicals" ! What a great honor considering with such greats as Betty grable, Alice Faye, Jeanette MacDonald, Betty Hutton and others! Sadly, she was not appreciated, respected, loved, cherished, protected or understood all the many years she was at MGM-only the top money maker.🤔 later after she left MGM it was the same with everyone else-her husbands, agents managers, record producers and her treatment she received at "valley of the Dolls" !😢

    The most beautiful thing about this duet is how Judy is always supportive and trying to lift Barbra, without any fear of getting herself outshined by the landslide of talent that is Barbra. She paid the ultimate price for her talent, and for her place on the spotlight but she was generous enough to share it every time she could, and it's not exclusive to this duet, since she was a teen she always gave so much respect and praise to the musicians playing with her on stage. She deserved a lot more as an artist, and she hella deserved an universe--wide more from life.

  • @dannydoc1969

    My generation was very lucky. We were witness to history being made. Talented singers and musicians were on TV every day, every week, without gimmicks, no auto tune, no over compression, no gimmicks, just pure raw talent. These artists came on shows and performed as good, if not better, than when they were in the recording studio. Glen Campbell on guitar, Sinatra, Dean, Judy, Barbra, Ella, Satchmo, Duke, Count, the list of the greats is legion. Today the kids can go to RUclips, but unless someone tells them, they miss out on the great performers.

    Of all the vocal coaches I’ve seen commenting on videos you make the most sense. You do a quick demonstration of what you’re talking about but you don’t stop the video a zillion times and you don’t have a huge ego and make it all about yourself. Normally I hate watching these vocal coach vids but I really liked yours. And Streisand makes me cry all the time, you’re not alone in this. My mom listened to her and saw her movies and took us kids along so she has sort of been the soundtrack to my life despite my love for more rock & roll/grunge style music. I believe she is the most beautiful vocalist I’ve ever heard. Good job!

    I’ve watched this clip ever since Lorna ( Judy’s daughter) put these clips together called The Concert Years that PBS would show during their fundraising in 1987. Hearing these two legends sing I feel my humanness and gratitude that I have a heart and that life can be beautiful and not just an obstacle course . I call them angels when on earth remind each of us that we are Not just our body . We are souls that inhabit this physical body for a limited period of time . They rdon’t each with their tone as you so well put it to tell and make us feel . Feelings are the gateway and expression of our souls and Odense start coming on the moment of the opening bars , even before the start singing . But then they do start and they take you to a place in your heart you didn’t know existed. I loved your description of what physically is going on a- emphasis on concedents or vowels. Expression on your face occurs precisely at same moment as mine as I heard their notes .

    Apart from this technical ‘’explanation’’ of two of the greatest voices , I think that you have forgotten to say that what makes this voices so unique is the emotion they transmit and much comes from their heart. One sings with voice, brain and heart... I really could not hear Streisand’s staccatos , but their vocal timber are so unique and different , where Streisand is more like a soprano leggero and Garland is a contralto ... this combination makes the performance even more precious.

    By this point both of them were so experienced and so established at what they did, they truly were relaxed and willing to share the spotlight. No need to compete or work at what they could do so easily. (My daughter & friend of hers did this in singing class. They did great. It was the highlight of the evening.)

      Keep in mind Barbra was 19, but that talent can’t be taught in a hundred lifetimes. She just had it then and still does. Judy had it too but left us far too soon.
