  • The last decade has been tumultuous with regards to humanitarian crises, displacement, and forced migration. At the end of 2022, 108.4 million people worldwide were forcibly displaced as a result of persecution, conflict, violence, human rights violations and events seriously disturbing public order.
PSIA is pleased to welcome Filippo Grandi to talk about his mandate, global trends, and UNHCR's wider work for refugees.
Filippo Grandi has been the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees since 2015. He previously served as Commissioner-General of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (2010-2014), and as Deputy Commissioner-General (2005-2010).
He served as the Secretary-General’s Deputy Special Representative of the United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan and has a long-standing career with UNHCR, notably as Chief of Mission in Afghanistan and Chief of Staff in the High Commissioner’s Executive Office in Geneva. His vast UNHCR field experience includes positions in Sudan, Syria, Turkey and Iraq. He also led emergency operations in Kenya, Benin, Ghana, Liberia, the Great Lakes region of Central Africa, Democratic Republic of Congo and Yemen.
Mr Grandi holds a BA in Philosophy from the Gregorian University in Rome, a degree in modern history from the State University of Milan and an honorary degree (D.Litt.) from the University of Coventry.
The discussion was chaired by PSIA Dean Arancha González.
