Bishop Barron, great video, and a great new saint. Our Catholic Church has a leader, the pope, the theological depth of church history, Mary, and the saints. Other churches, be they Eastern Orthodox, Anglican, and the various Protestant sects, all have less than our Church, lacking sometimes Mary, saints, any leader, dedication to good works along with faith, etc. So, they seek Jesus and heaven with somewhat fewer strengths than we have. I can only pray for them and hope they succeed in their quest for eternal life. Hopefully all us Catholics, and those other churches, get to see St. Newman's teachings, piety, and love of truth. A great example for the world, indeed. Thank you.

Also, thanks a lot for being always so faithful to the Church. It's always a pleasure to listen to you
Thank you Bishop Barron for this video. As a great devotee of John Henry Newman you will certainly have enjoyed making this clip. I have been a great fan of yours for many years and always regarded your views as universal for the Catholic Faith. Only recently have I come across RUclips channels which are critical of your views, and some of them quite radical, or even very radically opposed to your opinion. In hindsight I can see that some of your videos must have been quite challenging for you. And that's why I believe you really enjoyed making this particular video. I am waiting now for the critics of Henry Newman coming out of the woodworks :-)
I took Newman as my confirmation saint when I converted back in April because he’s a convert, and all he had to give up to follow the truth, because of his fight against liberalism (by that I don’t mean American politics but philosophical liberalism, hyper individualism, enlightenment errors, &c.), and the way he bared his cross in all the suspicion of him on all sides. I’m just finishing up his Essay on the Development of Christian Doctrine. Excellent read! The first section on the Development of ideas would be beneficial even for the non Christian to read! And, little known to the theologically liberal and theologically conservative alike, St. Pius X himself wrote his approval of St. Newman’s writings on doctrinal development and said that it was in harmony with his encyclical Pascendi, which condemns Modernism and the thesis known as “the evolution of dogma.”
Being present at the Canonisation of St. John Henry Newman was a true privilege for me. I just want to say that here in Birmingham UK, was home & sanctuary for Newman for 40 years. He was not only a great theologian & writer but he lived a life of true humility & love for the poor & suffering. He has shown us how to be humble, kind & to care for those who need our help. He has brought the message of Christ to the streets of Birmingham & now to the whole world.
Thanks for the update Bishop. I have been listening to the audio book of Apologia Pro Vita Sua, and the most fascinating thing is to discover how a very serious and deep-thinking man changes his mind so dramatically over time. And how he defends this profound shift. It is food for thought today!! How Newman engages with slander, controversy, isolation, and misrepresentation, by delving deeply into the fine grain of the ideas that shaped his decision, is a thrill. It's a testament to the way of truth. I recently watched your Pivotal Players video and found this very engaging too. The Mass held at London Oratory was very moving and you really felt the presence of Newman's contemplative but acute mind overseeing it all.
Speaking as an Anglican myself, if Newman had wrote some of those tracts today it would have been far less controversial. Anglo-Catholicism which came out of the Oxford Movement is a pretty influential stream in Anglican life with many prominent Anglicans from C.S Lewis, to T.S Elliot, to Rowan Williams the former Archbishop of Canterbury subscribing to it. Moreover what he did was actually revive a movement of High Church Anglicanism that had already been their going back to the Caroline Divines like Jeremy Taylor and Archbishop Laud. Either way he was a great man for sure.
@Collins Anosike Well lets' slow down there a bit. From an Anglican perspective we don't believe the Anglican Church "started" with Henry VIII's divorce. The way we view our history is a bit like the way the Orthodox view their history. If you went up to an Orthodox Christian and asked them did their history start in 1054 they would say no. They had a history before 1054, 1054 was just when the schism happened. Similar to us we believe that there was a tradition symbolized in the Bishops of Canterbury that happened before the schism of the 16th century. Moreover Anglicanism as understood during the Reformation period didn't actually start under Henry VIII. He barely did any reforms. You first see it actually starting under Edward when Thomas Cranmer helped develop the Book of Common Prayer and it was officially codified under Elizabeth when the 39 Articles as mentioned Bishop Barron. Our main theologian Richard Hooker(who was praised by both Catholics and Protestants) wrote his main treatise on the Laws of Ecclesiastical Polity during this period. I'm not fan of Henry VIII for sure and he did some sketchy things to say the least. But then again, so did Constantine, the man who legalized Christianity with the Edict of Milan. That's often times the price of state Churches.
@Collins Anosike So lets clear things up again. In terms of Anglican-Catholic relations there was definitely persecution of Catholics which I will never defend. Religious persecution is one of the worst thing. There was also persecution of Protestants under Queen Mary. And yes I am quite aware of Thomas More and John Fisher. They were martyrs in a true sense and should be honored. But lets not play the self righteous denominational game of "my denomination is better than yours". There was persecution on both sides during the Reformation. Which is why the Ecumenical movement rightly so has been bridging those divides and which is why today you have the Pope and Archbishop of Canterbury getting along and working together as Christian brethren. That to me a better use of our time as Christians rather that pointing the finger at each other and saying "your Church did this" "your Church did that". If I pointed the finger at Catholics and brought up Discovery Doctrine in the past or the abuse scandal in the present, those things would be accurate. But I would be an uncharitable use of my time to bash fellow people who are part of a different denomination but who I still see as Christian. So lets get pass this denominational, sectarian mind set here.
@Collins Anosike Constantine also had his eldest son Crispus killed by poison and had his wife killed in an overheated bath. So yes, he legalized Christianity and built Churches but the man was not perfect. That's why I made the comparison.
@@mexicola10 It really makes me sad that this conversation has descended into denominational bashing here when as Christians we should be looking past our differences. It also makes me sad because even though i'm not Catholic, when Catholics do get bashed I'm the one who usually defends them from unfair attacks. As I explained the Anglican Church didn't "start" because of Henry the VIII's divorce. The Church of England had a history of Archbishops of Canterbury long before Henry as well as it's own distinct litrugy(Sarum Rite) which the Book of Common Prayer is based on. There has also been a history of wanting independence from Rome long before the Reformation with figures such as John Wycliffe and even going back further to the 11th century when people saw the Norman Invasion as a papal imposition on Canterbury's autonomous status. Also as I mentioned Anglicanism didn't get it's distinct Post-Reformation identity until Elizabeth I with the publishing of the 39 Articles. On Female priests yes, we do believe in women's ordination. We disagree with Rome on that. Just because we have disagreements though doesn't mean we can't see each other as brothers and sisters in Christ. There are things I disagree with Rome on as well as my Orthodox brothers and sisters. I don't use that though as an excuse to engage in self righteous and obnoxious theological bashing that's routed in a sectarian mindset.

@Monroevillewatchdog I'm now reading Ian Ker's, quite good. I've heard it's one of the best. But I still prefer his autobiography, a history of his religious opinions, "Apologia Pro Vita Sua".
@@MonroevilleWatchDog I'm sure there are things you won't get (as I also don't) about the state of the Anglican Church, problems with Liberalism, people he talks about etc. But what it's beautiful to see is his honesty and humility, and to grasp the process of his conversion. You can try to read it, you can find it for free on the internet. Look for "project Gutenberg": www.gutenberg.org I have Ian Ker's biography on PDF. I can send it to you if you tell me an email address PS: As a Spaniard, I find it very funny the use of "novice", because "novicio" in Spanish means a person who's preparing him or herself to enter a religious order!
@@mariab.774 Thanks for being here. 'Novice' only means a 'beginner'. It could be a beginner in just any field or area. For example I may say, "I am just a novice in Music." Yeah we are accustomed to the use of the word in relation to Religious life.
If we speak of "liberal" and "conservative," Newman must firmly come down in the anti-liberal camp: "For thirty, forty, fifty years I have resisted to the best of my powers the spirit of Liberalism in religion." The only sense in which Newman was ever associated with "liberalism" is his very Catholic view that ultramontanism is not Catholic doctrine and that the Pope is indeed very fallible in most exercises of his authority, but not all.
Why don’t you address the pagan worship of the Amazonian Synod? The goddess Pachamama that has been venerated in front of the Pope and processed in churches, St Peter’s and the Synod hall? What would Newman have said about all that...?
By preaching the pure Gospel not syncretising nor relativising the Faith and confusing and conflating it with paganism. Many Amazonian people’s are converting to Christianity without the suggestions of the Synod - they’re becoming Pentecostals because it’s radically different from the superstitions of their past!
Do Saints have to have attested miracles these days? I'm Australian. We only have one Saint. St Mary McKillop. The Protestants call us Rock Choppers because we had so many Irish Catholics. RC. Get it?Convicts. Paddy writes home to Colleen: It's not to bad over here. Steal a sheep and get sent over.
lol! My daughter was so mad when we went to Ireland when she was 9 and she realized that all the ancient and most elaborate churches had been taken by Church of Ireland and she wanted to march up to anyone and demand them BACK!!
,It’s also really silly to put St. Newman in right or left categorizes because each country and culture kind of have their own definitions of what is left or right wing. Heck, even people who are from the same country and couture could have their own definition.
Excellently, thank You for your video! John Henry Newman, incredible story! There are serious indications. If I am not mistaken. That he was gay. Buried next to his lover. Are you the Church ready to meditate this? Or is that still tooooo dangerous? Thank You, much love in Christ!
That is an evasion of the question! It seems he was gay, an amazing person! Can YOU accept that gays can be AMAZING persons? Can you? And then is celibacy the “real “ question? What is the love of God truly about!?
Great commentary from Bishop Barron as usual. Technically lovely colour but the audio was absolutely terrible & very distracting. The close-up worked, with that lovely background but the wide shot didn’t. A beige wall is not that interesting. The moving (gimbal?) shots were just too much, drawing attention to themselves & away from Bishop Barron’s comments. The video needs to be reshot - but with a tripod & wind cover/protection for your radio mic. The jumping between wide (4K?) & close-up might work in a music video, but not here as it is just too conspicuous, again drawing attention to itself rather than the story or content. As Scripture says ‘there is a time and season for everything’, so jump-cuts may work for you under different circumstances. It was probably worth a try & may have not been too bad if it were not for the poor audio quality. And for the record I’ve made all these mistakes myself, so am totally sympathetic. Best wishes with your next video.
John Henry Newman scandalous RUclips ⁉️ He was buried in same grave as his 30 year companion as the 🌈🐜👁️👼 Saint. He was also Anglican minister who left the Protestant faith to go back to Rome.
Consulting the laity - "Today, we would kind of take that in stride." Would we? Most consultation I have seen (Australia) is pro forma and tends to affirm whatever the people running the event and/or initiative already think. Then they put out videos and documents, often featuring their associates and friends, repeating their views - views that resulted from their "consultation" with the laity. Working class Catholics, most of whom are migrants, do not get a look in and are looked down on for not being white, middle class "Australian Catholics". We haven't even begun to be a proper communion bar the minimum-maximum of communion in the Blessed Sacrament. That is not nothing but still pretty feeble. We are meant to be transformed, not conform so as to secure/protect power and privilege.
But compared with the mitred atheist bonvivants in the USCCB he was a hero. He gave up a comfy life of honor to risk going over to Rome. If only these mitred USCCB lazies faced up....half the episcopate would leave
@Collins Anosike There are always answers, of course! Surface ones naturally. So Jesus passed that "tradition" to His apostles and Rome's Vicar of Christ. When did He do that? Will I get examples when the Apostles feet were kissed? And why if it was a good thing to do did Rome dump the tradition that you seem to see in Scriptures?
@Collins Anosike Finding a way to put me down by implying that I am ignorant? Moreover ignorant of God's word which I have read since I was 10? Of course I know the Chapter and the verse but I just wanted you to write it out yourself to show you that it's not any near to what you were implying! I told you already there always answers and they will satisfy those who do not know, but not me. So where do we go from here, search your alleged verse and we see... by the way God will hold you responsible the way you handle His Word.

Do you recommend a biography on St John Henry Newman?
@Monroevillewatchdog I'm now reading Ian Ker's, quite good. I've heard it's one of the best.
But I still prefer his autobiography, a history of his religious opinions, "Apologia Pro Vita Sua".
@@mariab.774 Would a novice understand his autobiography?
@@MonroevilleWatchDog I'm sure there are things you won't get (as I also don't) about the state of the Anglican Church, problems with Liberalism, people he talks about etc. But what it's beautiful to see is his honesty and humility, and to grasp the process of his conversion. You can try to read it, you can find it for free on the internet. Look for "project Gutenberg": www.gutenberg.org
I have Ian Ker's biography on PDF. I can send it to you if you tell me an email address
PS: As a Spaniard, I find it very funny the use of "novice", because "novicio" in Spanish means a person who's preparing him or herself to enter a religious order!
@@mariab.774
Thanks for being here.
'Novice' only means a 'beginner'. It could be a beginner in just any field or area. For example I may say, "I am just a novice in Music."
Yeah we are accustomed to the use of the word in relation to Religious life.
Monsignor Lloyd. My apologies for intercepting but how would you evangelize the indigenous people in the Amazon region if not thru the synod?
@Charles
What's her claim to fame all the way in America?
@Charles
She spent time in America?
Fantastic .
May Grace travel The Earth.
Thanks for the Info.
Has Oxford apologized for how they treated him?
A lot of wisdom here, but the camera person needs some help. I had motion sickness watching it.
Newman was "liberal" in theology but Manning supported the Dockers
Hey, Prince Charles, tell your mom, the head of your church, we want all our property back.
😆👍
Good one 😃
lol! My daughter was so mad when we went to Ireland when she was 9 and she realized that all the ancient and most elaborate churches had been taken by Church of Ireland and she wanted to march up to anyone and demand them BACK!!
Yes, especially St Paul's in London, it's magnificent 😁
Time for a crusade ?
,It’s also really silly to put St.
I think this is one of those rare happening, the audio.
John Henry Newman scandalous RUclips ⁉️ He was buried in same grave as his 30 year companion as the 🌈🐜👁️👼 Saint. He was also Anglican minister who left the Protestant faith to go back to Rome.
Sort your camera man out
Prince Charles is a great man
Another St. John for the book of saints 😅
Praying for Australia and the Catholic Faith there.
@@marypinakat8594 God bless Mary. Will pray for your intentions.
But compared with the mitred atheist bonvivants in the USCCB he was a hero. He gave up a comfy life of honor to risk going over to Rome. If only these mitred USCCB lazies faced up....half the episcopate would leave
Finally Pope Francis did something right!
Expect many more for years to come. Amen.
Kissing the Pope's foot??? Yank! The saint should be asked how it tasted, the stinking foot, I mean.
I would kiss bishop barrons ring if I met him
@Collins Anosike
Yeah, great. The tradition that was passed on by Jesus to the Apostles and their successors, I guess.
@Collins Anosike
There are always answers, of course!
@Collins Anosike
He did? Can you quote the verse for me?
@Collins Anosike
Finding a way to put me down by implying that I am ignorant? Moreover ignorant of God's word which I have read since I was 10? Of course I know the Chapter and the verse but I just wanted you to write it out yourself to show you that it's not any near to what you were implying! I told you already there always answers and they will satisfy those who do not know, but not me. So where do we go from here, search your alleged verse and we see... by the way God will hold you responsible the way you handle His Word.
