Thanks for putting this video together. It is very enlightening. Funny , only a few years ago I would have had no interest in anything like this. Came to my faith after being ridiculed for going to mass one time. Started listening to the atheists arguments and the apologists so as I could get the better of the next person to ridicule me. I am well armed now to a certain depth and I love Catholicism. Great video , God bless.
My Grandmothers mother and wider family knew Blessed Cardinal Newman during his Oxford days as an Anglican priest. I used to worship at the Birmingham Oratory and used to live close by where his grave is in Rednal near Birmingham.
I want him to be made a Saint because no other saint attracts me as Cardinal Neuman does, for inexplicable reasons. Every time I feel disenchanted with my Catholic Church, his conversion gives me pause. There must be a good reason why he crossed over, I persuade myself to hang in there. There are two men who are singularly responsible to keep me in the Catholic Church. Bishop Fulton Sheen and Cardinal Newman.
His war against modernism drew him into Catholicism as it alone was a bulwark against it. The enemy became cleverer and went inside the Church to do its dirty work. Intercede for us, dear Henry.
knowing that a man, who lived in the country of the industralization and mechanization, in its very top of the cultural and intellectual debate, who ended an interior path truly freely as a cardinal of the Holy Roman Church, who actually spread catholicism into this culture of secularization with enormous strength, facing enormous difficulties (he proposed the oratory while there was luddism! this is the period) is quoted as "the great absent" in a Council that had in its tasks to be the great renovator of the Faith into modernity is one of the saddest things I ever heard. How can you even....I don't know, I really don't know. Let's pray about it! On the other hand, man, it's by this men that you see God is great!
And Gregory the Great would've been taken aback by the post-Trent Church. What's your point? Something you might remember from your reminiscemces is the authority of the Church and her councils over your opinions.
@@kajakkille No, Simon. Development is not a revolution, and, moreover, rebellion is precluded by the Faith (as Newman understood perfectly well). The fake liturgies invented to fit the ideologies needed to present a New Order in tune with the worldly mind - at odds with Sacred Tradition .. a horrendous blasphemy against the Holy Ghost, repudiated by Newman (as it already existed in the English church).
@@jinkypooh No, jp; he would toast the well-formed Catholic conscience first, only then the successor of Peter. JHN would have understood Marcel Lefebvre rather more than St Paul VI; and, I suspect, he would have sympathised with the faithful Catholics who in good conscience could not support the perversion of the Faith .. to better fit in with the mood of those now long gone, dusty old days of the 1960s - rather than the pope who came to regret his own hand-made Crown of Thorns - the successful auto-demolition of the Catholic Church (that had been placed in his care).
@@davewilson6313 Not at all DW. Gregory I would have felt perfectly at home at Trent, as would Innocent III, Gregory VII, and for that matter Leo I and Innocent I, perhaps even Clement I. Gregory the Great et al would have been shocked that Trent was so necessary so soon after the opportunities presented at Lateran V, Florence, and Constance - not by Trent, per se, nor by its responses to error. I grant you, however, that both Vatican I and its pastoral completion at Vatican II, would have left the earlier popes bemused; but then they were used to a very different level of secular interference in church affairs - not least in professed beliefs and properties owned, also the staggering centralisation of teaching authority on Rome .. as Europe's presidents, kings, and emperors gave up so completely on the investiture contests (leaving the popes all but totally free to appoint or affirm whomsoever they willed .. until the recent Accord with China, of course).
Newman is a great saint for our time. He well understood the rights & duties of a conscience properly conformed to Divine Natural law. His oft-repeated, oft-misapplied quote on making a first toast to conscience was in context of correcting error of an exaggerated sense of papal infallibility. Papal infallibility - obviously not impeccability-- is strictly limited to universal Catholic teaching on Faith & morals. That is, the papacy exists to safeguard the Deposit of Apostolic Faith by continuity; never by contradiction or addition of any new doctrine (Pastor Aeternus).
Sorry wrong spelling. I mean investigations. If you are offended by/with my comments, I’m so sorry. I’m just trying to do what any Catholic should do - defending my Faith. That’s all.
Blessed John Henry Cardinal Newman is one of the great writers and orators of the Catholic Church. His work has been determined to be in accordance with Catholic Church Doctrine. Martin Luther's work has not been of the same caliber, nor has it been shown that his life was of an heroic virtue. He is not in the same category of Blessed Newman; and Luther's work should be taken and understood as being Catholic Church Doctrine, but it is heretical to the core. He, Luther, may not have started out to form a separate church, but he did, along with his followers. He had an opportunity to reconcile with the Pope, but his ego wouldn't let him. I caution you Father Davies to reevaluate your understanding of Martin Luther - former Augustine priest. God bless you.
Why not talk about Cardinal Newman's gay life? He was living with his partner, Fr. Ambrose and because he was from an anglican background was given special dispensation to continue in a married state. It doesn't make a difference if a marriage is gay or straight. Cardinal Newman even in death was a committed husband, and gave specific instructions, fearing that the church might try to separate him from Fr. Ambrose once it figured our the nature of their relationship and uncovered some evidence to that effect, that he be buried with SPECIAL DECOMPOSING SOIL IN the grave of Fr. Ambrose!!! so that their bodies would be together and decompose together and not be seperated in death. This was discovered in 2008, when the Vatican ordered that the bodies be separated & an empty grave was found, with the bodies having decomposed! Some research in local sources, revealed that a journalist who attended the funeral of cardinal Newman, wrote in a Birmingham newspaper that Cardinal Newman had ordered that special decomposing soil be used so that he not be seperated from his lover, Fr Ambrose. The greatest gift to the great Cardinal Newman would be to respect his last wishes and honour his relationship. Cardinal Newman is no less a theologian or philosopher because he was gay!

David Ortiz while Augustine practised such things before his conversion, john Newman entered into a gay marriage after his ordination. However I don't believe orgies are equal to a loving committed gay relationship
More fundamentally he fails to realise the essential folly of applying subjective conscience (properly formed or not) to objective truth (Catholic church teaching)
@@0274798250 You are putting too basic an interpretation on conscience. Newman believed that conscience was God given for the perfect understanding of truth.
@@janetascott Thanks Janet. Of course, everything is God given, but not every conscience provides the perfect understanding of truth - that is why the individual conscience ought always to defer to church teaching and not take primacy over it as he maintained. His theological 'teachings' over the course of his life were confused (he admitted as much), but less so as he matured. As a result they were manipulated and distorted by dark forces within the church to weaken it, the results of which are painfully evident today. His canonisation during the Amazonian synod is a divine irony. We are all indebted to Saint John Henry Newman for richening our faith. Thanks again:)
