Hi, there is different oils to motor and transmission. Manual transmission or gearbox you need special oil what type is 75W-90 gear oil API-Gl 3. And for automatic transmission you need Dexron II transmission oil.
And for motor oil you need API grade SG oil, like Mobil 1.

Also, the tranmision fluid coming from toyota dealer just near our house was so cheap I think so, like 10 to $20, it's really hard to find high Mobil1 products here in our country so I'll just stick to toyota brand.

I change the oils in the following way: I lift the car from the driver's side without removing the wheel. I remove the plastic cover from the side of the gearbox. Remove the top screw and then lower screw to empty the gearbox. To fill up I get a piece of watering hose where at one end I place a funnel and the other side I put it in the gearbox and so fill with oil.

    Hi Peter,
good video but do you have the car on the level? The car needs to be level or on flat ground to make sure the oil drains and fills correctly. Once enough oil is inside it will dribble out of the fill hole. But it will only do that if the car is on the flat and with car jacked up it may not be level.
If possible do this on flat ground with all wheels still on the car.

      Good tip!
Also, ALWAYS, break loose the filler plug first before draining oil. This is to make sure it will be easily opened when it is time to fill it back up.
It matters more on older vehicles, but is a good rule to follow. There is nothing worse than draining all your oil with no means to fill it back up because of a seized filler plug that can strip out.!
Also do this on front & rear differentials too. Again it pertains mostly to older vehicles because of corrosion, hoverer it's a good habit to apply to all years due to whatever reasons may exist;~)

The oil is draining slow because your car is leaning to the right and drain hole is on the left side of your car.
You should have lifted the other side as well if you needed more access under your vehicle. I never needed to jack it up,
there is enough room for me to fit under it.

Scary when I did mine first time I swear only 300ml came out. Almost three went back in. Is it it possible it was low from factory???? Cars parked inside every night no signs of leaks. I'm going to change again soon almost 50000km.

Gearbox oil goes old within 90 000 km or 70 000 miles ! It should replace regularly.

I clicked on this video hoping to learn how to get to the gearbox of an automatic transmission. I've changed the automatic transmission fluid and filter many times, but I don't know how to do the gearbox. The gearbox has a separate reservoir from the automatic transmission. Any advice Peter? Or, another viewer?

DE Nichols an automatic has TRANSMISSION FLUID and a FILTER you changed that and that is the complete service, you are done . a manual transmission has GEAR OIL, with no filter and that is the complete service .

    • @DENicholsAutoBravado
      @DENicholsAutoBravado 9 лет назад

James Anderson There is a separate gear box with it's own fluid on a automatic transmission. I've done what you mentioned many times for my automatic, but trust me, we are both surprised about a gear box existing as well with seperate fluid.
When my CV axle seal broke water and transmission fluid came out....it must have been a junkyard replacement that got wet somehow before I bought the car.
