Looks yummy, however, Cambodian papaya salad does not required the use of postal and mortar. The main ingredients are the tiny baby shrimps and bacon, no salted crab, and no shrimp paste, just fish sauce, sugar, limes juice, etc..That’s how I remembered when I was young before the Khmer Rouge. @@StreetFoodTVCambodia in the US, we don’t have fresh tiny baby shrimps. They are frozen. I will use regular fresh shrimps and make it for my family. So they know and keep our Khmer traditional food for our future generation. Even the Cambodian Restaurants here don’t make it that way. They gravitate toward Thai and Laotian papaya salad. They are all delicious though. Thanks

False! « BOK » just means « POUND » in Khmer. I don’t know where you came from but before wars, in all provinces and the capital of Cambodia, Khmers always pound their papaya salad.
The dish is called « BOK LAHONG » which translated « POUNDED PAPAYA SALAD » ; we always use : dried shrimp, with prahok (fish paste) or kapeek (shrimp paste), and salted crab.
Only the Viet style papaya salad doesn’t pound it and use fish sauce, often serve with bacon.
I never seen bacon in Khmer version, maybe you make a confusion with our « CHRUOK LAHONG » which means « PICKLED PAPAYA SALAD » and you live in USA.
50% of the Cambodians diaspora in USA and France are of Han Chinese ethnic, following by others ethnicities (Viet, Thai Siamese, Lao, Cham, Filipino, etc...) ; it’s normal that they don’t know original Khmer recipes.
Sure you just eat the Viet version when you were young, because it’s just the recipe you described ; you can search on internet or try on Viet/Kinh restaurant.
