We have been on this Train ride several times. We started going out there before the 416 fire and also a couple years after the fire. A beautiful way to enjoy the Mountains and nature. We are from Iowa, and would recommend this vacation to everyone. It is very relaxing and we had a beautiful time in the four corners.
So glad I got my ride in on May 15, 2018 before the fire. I came all the way from Australia to ride the D&SNGR. It would’ve been super disappointing to miss out. As it was, it was a fantastic day, a steam buff’s paradise. I hope to make the trip back to do it all again. That’s how amazing it was.
Saw these all the time in the 40's and early 50's. I always enjoyed waving to the engineer and the guy standing on the back of the caboose. Have a hearty thumbs up!
My wife and I rode this in August 1999, after a ride on the Cumbres and Toltec RR. Both were great. We sat in one of the open cars instead of the passenger type as it was, well, more open. Even in August we needed a windbreaker as the temps slowly dropped as we headed to Silverton. I got some great images there due to the train activity downtown. Hope to ride this again... Very nice video, BTW!
Thank you. I'm glad you enjoyed the video. I really like videoing both of these trains and will definitely being going to Durango and Chama again soon.
Wonderful video! I remember this day well. I was actually the head brakeman this day so I spotted myself here and there throughout the video. Thanks for documenting this cool double-header.
Thanks Hayden! I'm honored that you like it and that you were brakeman on this train. We met trackside at the Animas River Bridge when you were droning. I think that was the day you got that magnificent video of the high line.
What remarkable and extremely impressive machines, steam engines were. My uncle had a farm which had a rail line passing alongside it in the 1950' 1960's, I have many fond memories of watching the steam trains approaching and departing, especially waving at the men who operated them. I was trying to describe this to my great grand children, but it was obvious, as city dwellers, they had no comprehension of the atmosphere which has so entranced me as a child. We had tickets for the train in June but they cancelled. Rode the Cumbres and Toltec instead. I'm very happy to see the Durango train back in operation. These trains are special and generate a lot of money for Southern Colorado and New Mexico. Very fine video. You chose some good spots to shoot.
We did get a refund. We plan on catching them next season. The Cumbres ride was awesome. Both RR's use the same style loco's so we may do both RR rides next season.
bill timmons there is also the royal gorge railroad too, but the royal gorge railroad uses desiels rather than steam engines, and it's a standard gauge railroad rather than a narrow gauge railroad.
Have ridden the Cumbres and Toltec and Durango and Silverton trains a couple times each, open cars close to the front, and the end of the day is back at the hotel washing all the soot and cinders out of my hair. I love it. love the smell of the coal fire.
May 4, 2019 is the first trip to Silverton, for the Durango and Silverton Narrow Guage Railroad. I just thought that I would pass the information along. The bicycle race against the Train from Durango to Silverton will be coming up soon, it's always held on Memorial Day weekend. Bless You.
I hear the D&S is running doubleheaders regularly now until mid August. Now I really wish I was out there again. I really enjoyed my ride last summer behind 480. I dont get why people are blaming the train for this when it could have obviously could have been a careless camper. The railroad already goes to very great lengths to prevent forest fires along the line. When I was out there last summer there was a wild fire in Utah that I could see the smoke all the way from Pueblo, CO. That one was apparently caused by somebody playing with torches I think. The railroad is so vital to Southern Colorado's local economy
The railroad is going to run double headers until August. The fire investigation isn't complete so it's too early to tell if it was the train. Thanks for watching!
Andrew Davis My Husband spoke with one of the fire fighters and he told him that it was probably caused by a careless smoking. A cigarette butt was found near where the Wildfire began. Bless You.
Great video. My family and I were actually evacuated because of this fire. Also the fire started right behind one of the houses we just put new doors in a day before the fire.
Great video and very much enjoyed this. Would like to know if you are the same person who did the San Juan Odyssey years ago in Ouray, Colorado with London Orchestra (I think it was) music to a beautiful slide show. Then we saw a presentation at a small theatre in Ouray a few years ago that was also very good. Would like to know if you are currently doing any other presentations besides the RUclips videos. Hope you have a great day.
I knew the Durango and Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad would return steam operations soon. Man what a scary 416 fire that was to temporarily close down operations.
I was the headend brakeman on that doubleheader. It was an interesting day since one of the firemen actually threw their back out from shoveling and I almost had to go up there and be the temporary fireman! Haha
If the Durango and Silverton ever did rebuild the line to Chama, it would save a lot of time and effort of transporting the locomotives from Durango to Chama and Vice Versa.
yard limit amazing video d&sngrr should rebuilt the tracks to Chama, NM so steam trains run from durango,co to chama,NM and back that would be soooooo amazing :)
The fact was proven when AHR had the contract to run the C&TS, they are 2 different lines run 2 very separate ways. Not to mention the amount of money that would need.
Just because the bridges are there does not mean the Right of way can simply be built over it. There would be millions, maybe billions of dollars tied up trying to rebuild it. Not to mention that several county and state roads/highways cross over or are on top of the ROW. A gofundme would do little for this venture. I am sure if you would like to fund the project on rebuilding the line between the two towns I am sure it would be appreciated.
At 5:45 the double header is assembled and prepared to commence traveling forward. Fine, but why oh why do you edit out the two short whistle blasts from each engine which must precede the forward motion? Or did the engineer neglect his responsibility? He did after all, do the right thing at 5:00 with three toots to indicate that he was backing up to couple. (I admit that this is nitpicking, but it does cause confusion to young railfans trying to understand railroad operations.)
This is actually very Impressive! I love to see action back on the D&S after the 416 Fire, and a doubleheaders until August make up for what was missed! The 3 chimes they wear are beautiful and one question, Is it true #480 and #486 have been stuck in Silverton?
They were stuck in Silverton. The fire started after the trains passed on June 1, closing the line for the return trip to Durango. Passengers had to be bused back to Durango and the trains remained in Silverton until a day or two before service was resumed.
How did you get the shot shown in 7:47 ? I see on Google Streetview that theres a large fence blocking off the bridge. Theres a little spot to the right where you might be able to squeeze in a shot but it looks like the trees kinda block it

I think converting to oil burning is a good idea. I know some people love the coal smoke and cinder rain, but I personally don't. Too bad the SP 918 lease to test an oil burner resulted in the locomotive blowing a piston and damaging a cylinder. That locomotive wasn't used to climbing mountains.
Most people won't notice a difference between coal and oil. It is unfortunate that SP 18 blew a cylinder, but it's being repaired and should be back in service soon.
Norton Hatfield The smoke was horrible, especially in the morning, of course there were two Wildfire's burning at the same time. The second one began about a week after the 416 fire. Last year was a very bad year for Colorado, and the western United States in general. Bless You.
So I take it that the train wasn't equipped with a bear catcher ( Ember Catcher ) on the stack, Which I thought was mandatory for all coal, or wood burning locomotives.
@@YardLimit I know they don't allow smoking on the train. I wonder if someone tried to smoke, and tossed a cigarette before getting caught. The Companies are usually on top of those catchers. The only way an ember can get though, is if a hole has developed in the screen. Which is highly possible. I'm sure it was a lesson well learned. LOL, not sure why I hit the A button when spelling ember. Thanks for the video !
Erick Wardwell last fall, my town had a major fire and that fire destroyed half of the town, and everyone in my town including the fire officials claim the electric utility company for starting the fire. It was some faulty powerlines and utility workers that caused the fire and high winds too.
I will note that the motor cars following the train to put out fires was standard practice for the D&RGW when I rode trains on this branch in the 1960s and 1970s
Motor cars have always followed it, but this is the first time I've seen two of them; one with a water tank. I've seen that in Chama every time I've been there. Definitely a first for the helicopter though! Thanks for watching!
Yard Limit it will be hard for the Durango and Silverton railroad to find diesel locomotives because the Durango and Silverton railroad is a narrow gauge railroad.
Here comes the Silverton up from Durango Here comes the Silverton a-shovalen' coal Here comes the Silverton up from the canyon See the smoke and hear the whistle blow!

Most engines have a D&RGW 5 Chime, however 473 has a D&RGW Passenger 3 and 476 a bullet top lunkenheimer 3.
I am aware of what whistles they wear, Its just that i like how the K-28s wear 3 chimes to change it up because all the K-36s have 5 chimes

Yard Limit I also recall them seen them on engines that were making their inaugural run after being restored one of these engines can be traced back to the video Rebirth of a locomotive which goes for the restoration of k36 number 482 shortly after being acquired with a trade with the cumbres and Toltec Scenic Railroad for their larger k37 number 497

I wonder how many miles of track and locomotives D&S has? I know that C&T in NM have 10 or 11 I think and have nearly 70 miles of track
It's 46 miles from Durango to Silverton. I don't know how many locomotives it has but you can google it.

"the 416 fire" could be understood as a fire in April of 2016. Is that what it means? If not, what is the significance of the number 416?
So, the number 416 does not represent this being the 416th fire this year, but rather it is the 416th "incident" in the SJNF this calendar year.

Three foot narrow gauge.
They need to cut all of the Brush near the RR tracks and burn the wood in the train .....

YES THE 476 IS BACK!
So, what happened to #416? Was it a loss? Did the cars also burn? Was it a brush fire?
416 was the name of the fire that closed the line for a while, it’s named 416 because of the area code for where it was
Not exactly. The number 416 comes from the number of incidents that the Columbine Ranger District had responded to in the San Juan National Forest.
Fantastic.
Thanks!
My parents rode this in the 50's and said there was a following unit to watch for sparks from the engine.
They still do that.
I was wondering if they ever communicated by whistle, perhaps like morse code?
I have a couple Cumbres and Toltec videos where it seems like they are.
I freely spend my money when I ride that train, knowing that I am contributing to the economy of the area.
Clearly an excellent place.
It is. Thanks!

I can't help but notice that your audio is slightly off the whistle sounds before the steam escapes on some of the scenes
Well, sounds travels more slowly in the mountains. Do you believe that?
Yard Limit that might be something but I never heard of that before
Depends on how far away the camera and microphone are from the sound source. Sound travels one mile in about 5 seconds.

The engineer blows the whistle and they do it very frequently on steam trains. Passengers like it and videographers like it.
How did the fire start?
It's still under investigation.
Evidence strongly points to the train!
An amateur train buff who lives next to the tracks actually has a fire hose and water supply on his truck that he used to put out 5 fires caused by the train in May. He witnessed the start of the 416 fire as the train passed and unsuccessfully tried to put it out...from the Durango Herald! 54,000 acres burned, 25 million dollars cost, hundreds of people evacuated!
Fire occurred at a steep grade, which causes coal fired engine to emit burning cinders.
All true. I just didn't want to speculate on the page.
Did you hear that the Railroad Got Sued over this?
I hear they are getting sued. Seems premature since the official investigation hasn't released results yet.
Jonah Snyder I heard about that and that was the most stupid thing I’ve ever heard in my life
Didnt C. W. McCall sing about this railroad in the 70s. Im showing my age now lol?
Damn! Who knew! ruclips.net/video/U2VbX-DbLrY/видео.html
So has the railroad admitted to starting the 416 fire?
The fire is still under investigation.
Yard Limit the fire may have started from a person throwing a lit cigarette off the train
Don't jump to conclusions before the facts are gathered.
If I remember right there was no smoking allowed on the train when I rode it 15 years ago
A person, who is a railroad buff, and who lives next to the tracks, put out 5 fires due to the train in May!
Why did they sideline 478? Nothing was wrong with it.
478 is currently stored in the D&S museum awaiting a rebuild in the distant future.
Its boiler time ran out.

they found out that it was the train that started that fire
OOSAS Advenures They alleged, nothing for sure. The lawsuit alleges, but they have not given up and confirmed it.
The opening image footage reminds me of a volcano eruption.
Yes, the guy did a nice job with that one.
Norton Hatfield The smoke was horrible, especially in the morning, of course there were two Wildfire's burning at the same time. The second one began about a week after the 416 fire. Last year was a very bad year for Colorado, and the western United States in general. Bless You.
Unrelated but the smoke stacks on those locomotives, (spark arrester included) are taller than a human. I think that’s pretty crazy.
So I take it that the train wasn't equipped with a bear catcher ( Ember Catcher ) on the stack, Which I thought was mandatory for all coal, or wood burning locomotives.
An ember catcher. I don't know, but I do know that sometimes they don't always catch everything.
@@Charles53412 Thank you. All good points!
What caused the fire?
The investigation isn't complete yet.
Yard Limit
The local news network said residents accused the locomotives, but they dont have any evidence to prove it yet.
It could have been some loose powerlines that have caused the fire.
Norton Hatfield
I live in tn, in the smokey mountains and usually all of our fires are started by campers not estenqushing there camp fire properly.

That's very cool. I'm glad I videoed it!
I want to visit so bad. . .
The Durango and Silverton railroad railroad is looking to buy diesel locomotives so that they can run the trains in any weather conditions.
They have agreed to purchase two for a cost of $3 million. They are also converting 493 to burn oil.
Yard Limit it will be hard for the Durango and Silverton railroad to find diesel locomotives because the Durango and Silverton railroad is a narrow gauge railroad.

I want to take a good long motorcycle ride and catch this train.
That sounds like fun!
476 and 473 should swap whistles
Don't worry about a fire, it would'nt have been the first fire along the steam train system.
Here comes the Silverton up from Durango
Here comes the Silverton a-shovalen' coal
Here comes the Silverton up from the canyon
See the smoke and hear the whistle blow!
Nice! Is this from a song or did you write that?
@@YardLimit The former.
