- If you are familiar with decoupage, you'll know that in general, we want to apply our napkin over a white or light coloured background. If we don't, the napkin image will be subdued and dark. Well I am here to tell you this is a thing of the past, and with this new game changing method you can now decoupage over any colour background you want!

Love this!! I have seen it done by one other person, while their example was good, your video was easier to follow!! Thank you!
thank you!
excellent tutorial. I did not have polyvine varnish, so I used my polyvine all-purpose lacquer, and did not have the mat so I used parchment paper. I put my design on a dark candle. turned out beautiful. thank you again. without your tutorial I would never have thought I could decoupage the dark candle with napkins.
so glad you found it useful! And thank you for letting us know about alternative ways. I will have to try it on parchment as well
Awesome!. I've prepared napkins with glue to give that transparent stiffness to them, but never did it I think to paint the backside of the image. Great tip 😆TFS
Likewise 😊
I used back of my silicone mold ❤
oh that's such a great idea! Thanks for the tip
Just getting into this, and I find your videos extremely helpful. I also do not have a silicone mat, but I do have some silicone cake pans that have never seen the light of day. Will have to give it a try! 🤗
so glad you are finding our videos helpful! silicone cake pans should work just fine :)

Thanks for a very informative video. I use Polyvine heavy duty extreme varnish as a finish on my coasters. Its brilliant, quick drying, and really seems to work well.
Yes the Heavy Duty Extreme works great as well

Hi Ninny. I'm new to decoupage and have been binge watching videos before starting a project. I'm so happy to have found your channel. I wish I could go to a workshop but too far to drive from New Brunswick! Would you consider doing a cutting board video? Also, a video using the rice paper?
If I manage a few projects using the supplies I picked up, I'll be placing an order with you!
Happy New Year!
Thank you for your kind words, I will do my best! Rice paper is very easy to work with and a great place for beginners to start.
Thank you so much for your reply back to me.😊

Beautiful! This is a game changer. Can you do this with actual vellum paper?
thank you for watching! I haven't tried it but I can't see why not
Love this new method Nicole. I can see a lot of applications for this.
Yes! Nice to hear from you, I hope you've been well :)
Wonderful, this is great!Thank you for the inspiration. I have to get me some of that stuff 🧡🎃👏
You are so welcome!
So cool! Can indoor outdoor mod podge be used in place of the varnish at all? I've never used the varnish before. Thanks!
Not for coasters as it's not heat resistant. I'm not a fan of Mod Podge as a sealerfor most projects as I find it tends to stay tacky for a very long time and I have trouble getting a smooth finish. Polyvine Varnish is a far superior product imo
🤯👍🏼😃😃😃
Thank you very much for sharing, what a brilliant idea😅 Is this method working with rice paper?
Thank you for watching. I think with rice paper you should just be able to paint white directly on the back of the paper. If not then this method would work for sure
Thats awesome! Just was wondering whst kind of plastic you used for that water method?
Thanks! It is just a plastic packaging that a bunch of rice papers came in, you could also use a sheet protector or large freezer bag.
Thank you so much 💗 for quick response. Sorry to bother you again, but I was thinking is this will make rice paper background transparent like did with napkin? I just haven't got silicone mat yet to try. But following your marvellous tutorial I have bought today polyvine decorators varnish and heavy duty wood varnish. Thank you😂
No problem at all, that's what I am here for. No it likely won't make the rice paper very transparent. Do you have any silicone molds? Someone mentioned they used the back of a mold which is a great idea
Great tutorial…I do have a question…
Once the white paint is dry can you paint over that with the varnish, let dry and apply to your project using the iron method? 🤷🏼♀️
good question, I am not sure! If you try it please let us know the results
Will this work to apply napkins to dark cotton baskets or does the surface have to be flat?
I have a silicone mat but it doesn't have the baking design on it. It's non stick and is heat resistant. Will that work
yes it will! :)
Does this method work with decoupaging dark or colored background napkins onto a white surface to prevent color bleed as well?
sorry I am not quite sure what you are asking? Does the ink in the napkins you are using sometimes bleed? We always advise using good quality napkins printed in Europe as their ink won't bleed. This method may help though but I have no experience with it
What are the thin plastic sheets?
you can use any thin plastic packaging, page protectors for binders work really well. You can usually find them at dollar stores
What is being used for the background?
it is a wooden coaster painted black
