Nah, the new South style is the result of what Bad Boy records had started when it made it ok to be commercialized and to rap about materialism in an advocacy fashion. I can still remember the underground hip hop heads crying foul back then when Puffy, Ma$e, and all were blowing up. The only Bad Boy artists who got a pass were Craig Mack, Biggie, and The Lox. Other than them, the underground heads were crying about hip hop dying since the Bad Boy era. The southern trap BS you see these days are the ripples from what Puffy had stirred up.

Jay Anderson I was listening to this when it first came out. I always gravitated towards Southern or West Coast rap over Northern East Coast stuff. The south has a long history of soulful music, from blues, to rockabilly, to gangsta rap.
