"Cool uncle" has negative connotations in the US as well, at least where I'm from. Its meaning is more like the uncle that seems cool when you're young because he has a red sportscar but whose coolness fades when you later discover he has a history of drunk driving.

I love watching news about America while abroad and comparing what gets coverage and how, relative to our internal coverage.
