I've lived in Santa Cruz my whole life, and because it's not a huge city, we get programming from both the Bay Area and Central Coast. KCBA is the nearest Fox affiliate and KBHK was an independent Bay Area affiliate. The commercials in this volume were recorded by my cousin David, who moved to the Sac area in 1988.
I love how in the 90s they told us to rebell against adults and be a Kid like in the chuck e cheese commercials, but in the 80s we were to respect all adult authority. The 90s sold us the dream :-)
Gummi Bears premiered a couple of years before I outgrew kids cartoons, and remember it quickly became one of my favorites. I had no idea it was still on as late as 1990-1991. Sadly, I was "too old" for Disney Afternoon by then (not that it mattered--I think the block was pretty much over by the time I got home after school).
Hey, I used to count all my pennies to save up to buy Lego sets that cost half that. When you're a kid with a 5.00 allowance, $100 is a lot of money. And given such a low cash prize amount, that likely meant the chance of winning was significantly higher. I think I'd rather win $100 than have a 1 in 5,000,000 chance of winning a million.
1983 Wow! Remember When... ●Cap'n Crunch had a voice!? ●Oh hell yeah Chip and Dale Rescue Rangers, Duck Tales and Tale Spin! ●GI Joe just cracked me up
What..."listen up to what-I saaaay" ? LMAO! Wrestling Buddies!! OMG I remember those! I'm a girl (which doesnt mean a thing) and even I loved those (even though I never had one..my cousin did). haha Thanks for the memories.
wow I wonder if that was the only way to get the SPOT game back then? or just happened to be one of the ways... I remember playing that one it was kinda fun!
I remember those wrestling buddies :) oh my gosh and that old cartoon the gummi bears!!! And those old corn flakes commercials with the green rooster. :) oh my gosh wow and the spots from the 7-up commercials!!!!!!! :D
I used to eat the shit out of those berry bears fruit snacks. The pegasus ones were my favorite, my mom couldn't buy them fast enough. I also miss how you could just mail in for contests and free shit. I dunno if cereal still comes with prizes....But now you have to give them your email information with a special code and they can send you endless spam. No thanks!
"Mars Blackmon" is the character Spike Lee played in those Nike commercials in the 1980s. This was either an excellent imitation or Spike Lee actually appearing to poke fun of himself
I loved Quiz Kids Challenge, so you can imagine how exstatic I was when GSN started rerunning it in 1997. I also had all of the wrestling buddies. How else can you claim a victory over Hulk Hogan without having to worry about him using his creative control to veto having to lose? :-)
Ahhh--Chuck E. Cheese--I had my 5th and 6th birthday parties there in the early 80s. Somewhere at my parents' house are some CEC tokens from that time period (for some reason, they put the date on them). I don't know if they're still nationwide, but there's quite a few of them around here in North Texas (alas, the one I had those birthday parties at has been a car repair place for at least 20 years now).
It was "ShowBiz Pizza Place" in my part of the country (Iowa) when I was a youngster. I think the 2 chains merged, and at some point they phased out the ShowBiz brand and rebranded them all as Chuck E. Cheese.
That would be Skip Hinnant of "The Electric Company" fame! That PBS show was my favorite when I was a kid. I had outgrown "kiddie" shows by the time these commercials aired, but they are still interesting to watch.
Okay who was Captain Crunch's voice? I feel like I'd heard him outside of a commercial. Anyone know where, or did I just imagine hearing him outside a commercial?
Did you move anywhere between Salinas, the Bay Area and the Sacramento area? Because that's where all of the commercials' affiliates' stations came from: KCBA (Salinas), KBHK (San Francisco Bay Area) and KTXL (Sacramento area), respectively. Did you ever move between any of those areas?
It would be funny to have seen Superbad done with the Superdad cast (Bob Crane is Seth, Kurt Russell is Evan). The Quiz Kids Challenge ad is a lame attempt at Spike Lee's Michael Jordan ads. Everyone knows you can't just parody Spike Lee is his prime. You've got to do it right. And that Hershey Box ad looks similar to a famous Pepsi ad a few years later with a boy and a Pepsi bottle. Coincidence?
Man...all of the commercials back then used to have the same look and feel. Fun, friendly, happy, positive, and everlasting.
I miss those days.

Man I miss the 90s. I love watching Chip N' Dale when I was little.
I love how in the 90s they told us to rebell against adults and be a Kid like in the chuck e cheese commercials, but in the 80s we were to respect all adult authority. The 90s sold us the dream :-)
God how I miss being a little kid watching those Disney cartoons!
"Superdad" aired Friday, 9/28/90 at 7 PM. The "TaleSpin" episode in this block is "The Golden Sprocket of Friendship", which premiered 9/27/90.
This brought back so many great memories, thank you for posting!!

The good ol 90's
Really reliving the 90's experience with the perpetual tracking issues.
Aye, I'm curious as to how VHS is supposed to still have superiority over some modern formats according to the internet in some parts
You know what the best thing about 90's commercials were? You didn't have to constantly see ads for boner pills.
chip and dales' rescue rangers, duck tales, tale spin! best cartoons ever!
This is about the resolution I got watching anything but CBC and PBS ;_;
this takes me back
1983
Wow! Remember When...
●Cap'n Crunch had a voice!?
●Oh hell yeah Chip and Dale Rescue Rangers, Duck Tales and Tale Spin!
●GI Joe just cracked me up
Ms.gshunw I do! Duck Tales was my favorite!
that gi joe one is classic!!!!
If you're referring to the guy in the Quiz Kids Challenge commercial, that's not Spike Lee. He even says "Lawrence Black here..."
Who'd have thought that Sprite's "Spot" game would end up being one of the best SNES games of all time?
serious if sure Not
The guy in the promo doesn't look like Spike Lee beyond a passing resemblance. Inspired by that character perhaps, but it's not him.
fantastic post
fake out eraser got me through middle school...
Things I forgot:
Cap'n Crunch's voice
Toucan Sam
Dick Tracy! That comic was cool.
The animated 7-Up dot.

Damn, Look at Chuck E Chesse, Holy Shitttt!
wow I wonder if that was the only way to get the SPOT game back then? or just happened to be one of the ways... I remember playing that one it was kinda fun!
I agree with you. The Hershey Chocolate Milk tasted like old milk with a chocolate filter. That was why I was a Quick child in the 90s
I keep playing that Jetson Cereal
I had a Ducktales lunchbox when I was 4-5

Honestly, I think kids want the food more than the toy prizes these days ...
K. Munoz
May be, I no longer know how kids think.
These commercials rock. :)
I loved Quiz Kids Challenge...and remember how awful that Hershey's Box was. XD
"Mars Blackmon" is the character Spike Lee played in those Nike commercials in the 1980s. This was either an excellent imitation or Spike Lee actually appearing to poke fun of himself
that g.i.joe commercial went hard!!
anyone else get so thirsty they inadvertently suck up reality itself through a straw?
I was totally obsessed with Dick Tracy when the movie came out, I even had that watch that lit up, and I thought I was so cool lol
Has me thinking of the Manitoba (Winnipeg) Jetsons modern day socialites in MLBaseball.
That Quiz Kids ad had some hella bass. Danggggg.
I think the dark haired boy in the G.I. Joe spot is J.D. Daniels from The Mighty Ducks.
Me too, TheChyckClique. Me too.
I loved Quiz Kids Challenge, so you can imagine how exstatic I was when GSN started rerunning it in 1997. I also had all of the wrestling buddies. How else can you claim a victory over Hulk Hogan without having to worry about him using his creative control to veto having to lose? :-)
The corn flakes ad is so funny lol
Oh man, I've been looking for those Gummi Bears bumpers for so long. Do you have any more? Do you have the Darkwing Duck bumpers?
lol Bob Crane
man I still have all those Dick Tracy toys.. except The Blank.. :(
It's All about the Dick Tracy action figures!!! ; )
Ahhh--Chuck E. Cheese--I had my 5th and 6th birthday parties there in the early 80s. I had a few of them hidden compartment captain crunch toys.
I could've gotten Dibiase, but I had to pick only one so I picked warrior. i'd love to find Bossman & Jake too!
That is definitely Skip Hinnant. :)
That would be Skip Hinnant of "The Electric Company" fame! That PBS show was my favorite when I was a kid. I had outgrown "kiddie" shows by the time these commercials aired, but they are still interesting to watch.
Sacramento home of the Sacramento Sacrilage in pro basketball.
OMG, I HAD A WWF(E) WRESTLING BUDDY! It was the Ultimate Warrior!
Okay who was Captain Crunch's voice? I feel like I'd heard him outside of a commercial. Anyone know where, or did I just imagine hearing him outside a commercial?
i can barely remember out chuck e cheese here in merced. it used to be a bank.... so it had a very dark, gothic castle look to it.
OH WE OH TAIL SPIN i own a ton of music from disney afternoon
this was from KTXL TV
OH GOD SUPERDAD IS MAJOR HOGAN! And lol Dick Tracy, the Original cyberpunk Dues ex
aficionado..... hahahahahahahh!!!!!! like.
I want the Batman RPMs!!!!!

I have those Dick Tracy toy's still.
6:42 FUCK!!!!
It would be funny to have seen Superbad done with the Superdad cast (Bob Crane is Seth, Kurt Russell is Evan).

It's light, harmless entertainment. I'd much rather have my kids watch G.I. JOE than some of the mind-numbing garbage passing for cartoons these days.
wow..Spike Lee showing a white person in a decent light...
