Interesting hypothesis, perhaps i'm getting to old for games myself, there are genres in games that still haven't been explored to there full potential "Survival Horror" is a major one. We won't see a return of classic survival horror purely based on how niche the market for that genre is, it's simply not worth the time or investment for major publishers, your hypothesis pretty much fit's the Resident Evil franchise, the question is what was the turning point, what game signified the change ?
there is actually an interesting statement made by RE creator Shinji Mikami: "Apparently, the remake did poorly in sales and Mikami opted for a genre that would be more of a crowd pleaser. “Because of the reaction to the Resident Evil remake,” said Mikami, “I decided to work more action into Resident Evil 4. Resident Evil 4 would have been a more scary, horror-focused game if the remake had sold well.” (Source: IGN interview) So it's quite obvious: Resident Evil team create the original PS1 RE's which are amazing pieces of art, Code Veronica (which is like original RE's but on PS2), then create the GameCube versions which perform poorly, get scared of the poor sales and start refocusing the game, doing a major release (RE4) which blows the bank and start shifting on more action orientated games. At the same time, Shinji Mikami (again the original creator) leaves the series. It's pretty obvious what happened after that. I admire the original Team Silent, and it's really disappointing that Konami wanted to guide the already successful Silent Hill series to western audiences and developers, and thus canceled the KCET (Konami Computer Entertainment Tokyo, which was responsible for highly successful games like Castlevania, Pro Evolution Soccer and DDR!) and it was the end of an era for Silent Hills. They actually took same actions against KCEJ (Beatmania, GuitarFreaks and MGS), but let Hideo Kojima and Metal Gear series establish their own subsidiary called Kojima Productions. And because Hideo Kojima's influence on Metal Gear series is so big, and the series has stayed very successful, I don't believe that Konami will guide it to the same path anytime soon, hopefully. Sorry for the long rant, I hope at least someone enjoyed the history lecture. Also, please correct me if I'm wrong on something.
omenatfallen But that makes no sense, the Capcom 5 which included the RE Remake was failure because it was on the Gamecube, the Resident Evil remake didn't sell for shit because it was on the Gamecube. The Gamecube at that point had an install base of 10 million, compared to the PS2's 30-40 million units that and the vast majority of RE fans were on the PS2. If the game was the PS2 it would have sold much better without a doubt, they didn't have to change the entire genre. I honestly feel that RE 4 was the most overrated piece of trash I've played in the last decade, it blows my mind how people can call it the best Survival horror game, it;s a Survival Action not Survival Horror, Silent Hill 2 was the pinnacle of that genre.
***** I call Far Cry 3 interesting and original because Jason starts out as a normal, actually weak guy from California who gets captured by pirates,(The real ones not the ones with parrots and eyepatches) and is stuck on a dangerous island. He starts out scared, and even cries when he accidentally kills somebody, but over the course of the game he becomes used to the violence, eventually relishing in it and going insane.
This one has the most disturbing and disorientating atmosphere and visuals, and the soundtrack is fantastic too. Silent Hill 3 will always be my favourite one and still somehow scares me everytime I play it.
That white hair sure helped to hide it in plane sight, if you saw her white hair and didn't had your attention on her eyebrows, you would miss it completely even knowing there's something wrong with her face.
Watching this and the SH2 Making Of really hits home how much these games' being masterful works were no accident. It is very much akin to watching Miyazaki working on one of his films. These aren't game developers trying to make a 'deep game' (ahem...every single SH title since 2004). These are artists who are using the medium of games to produce great, unique storytelling with a wealth of subtext. And reaching somewhere deep in the unsettling areas of the human psyche to deliver it.
+Chiros Ie Lately I've been losing my mind because of this. There hasn't been a game as artistic and symbolic as this game in ages. There hasn't been any good games coming out at all this years and lasts as well. I just repurchased a PS1 and PS2 solely for the good ol' early 2000s games.
two words: unlimited submachine gun. You get it in the finished save file. best thing ever. If they just gave that unlimited submachine gun to you in all the games, that would be the most successful franchise ever. And also a beam saber and a plasma rifle would be nice. Or at least if the lead pipe worked like a light saber. but the fourth you just beat things up with golf clubs that eventually broke. combats tough. I think it was tough the first play through maybe. but it's worth it for the monster designs and story really, the whole game about the health bar is sort of a pain. But once you have the unlimited submachine gun playing it over and over again is easy. If you can stand that much video game time.
If you dig you will find a lot of metaphors and hidden meanings, it gets out of the Hollywood cliches of hero vs criminal, the chick, the kiss, the gun, etc. It really gets you out of the obvious.

The other world in this one always creeps me out more. Just looked more gnarly. Each game is creepy in its own way. Silent hill 2 had pyramid head always looming not so far away... and he alone could keep you on edge... and this one went a lot more in on atmosphere. The writing In these games still holds up to this day as well. So many things that piece the stories together... and create the world. Giving the proper scares with a beautiful mix of horror, imagery and so on... while also letting us breathe at moments to let our minds do the scaring for us as well. Each character truly feels like they exist In their own game and story. Well at least for the first four games...before they started taking the greatest hits route for money. Great series. Really wish Konami cared for the series like capcom does with RE. Would have been awesome to get a truly well done remake of some of these ... in modern graphics. Or at least some newer games.
This is still to this day my first and favorite Silent Hill game in the series. It's what introduce me to this Konami game franchise. After that the rest is history and I've played every Silent Hill game.

I really wish they never deleted the baby crying at the end of SH3. If they did that they might as well have deleted the part of the ending scene when Heather looks back. But the baby crying at the end actually solidifies the story much more that from the death of God, a child is reborn which insinuates an endless loop of the cycle of reincarnation that is a major theme in the series (at least in Alessa's, Cheryl's & Heather's case).
The thing about Claudia reincarnating doesn't make much sense as thematically it fits better for Claudia to die due to her obsession with religion just like Dahlia did. Also the only reason Alessa reincarnated is because she had god expelled from her with the alglophotis because Claudia doesn't have that it makes sense she dies birthing god.
The idea of Valtiel was present from the beginning in the form of the Incubus and the Seal Of Metatron, booth representations of an entity designed by God to protect Alessa. In the 1st game, Kaufmann was supposed to kill Lisa, but there was no evidence of this. Later Owaku confirmed that she fainted due to an overdose of PTV and Ito added that she was finally killed by Valtiel. I don't know the details, but you can see Lisa's fate in the cover of Silent Hill Cage Of Cradle.
Such a tragic shame that Silent Hills was never made, imagine it as a full virtual reality experience?, damn, I couldn't believe how amazing it looked watching my little bro play that demo.. genuinely looked like a bad fever dream... what a shame 😪
Also, Lost Memories goes on to talk about time being transcended over anything else, and that time has no continuity in highly infected areas. Its like the theory of time perception while asleep. An example of bending time would be Laura outside the window after James went through nightmare hospital. That would have taken quite some time, but everything outside the hospital simply stopped to those within it. Another would be reentering the hotel stairwell after Angela left through the entrance.
I always found it funny how when Harry is found dead. He's in almost the exact same position and in a very similar chair as the dead James Sunderland that our James Sunderland found.
It's so awesome that you came back, and revisited this. I almost didn't notice your comment. Thanks for doing something so cool! I know it's small and sort of not that noticeable but I have a little more hope for the world suddenly. (I just watched the SH HD collection videos by these guys. I lost a lot of hope for the world doing that. Absolutely excellent job they did on the videos, though. Much better than the recent games!)
No mention of one of the freakiest monsters in this game for me; the floating thing you barely see that emits an eldritch screech. In other news, how awesome would it have been if they managed to get PJ Harvey herself to sing the main theme!? I imagine that would've considerably added to the budget.
I recently finished the original SH3 and the game was sweet. No buggy HD Collection for me, thanks! This Making Of and SH2's are always entertaining to watch. I like how SH2's characters are thanked in the credits; too bad SH3's MO doesn't have it.
I am blown away with the amount of effort the developers to make the game as scary as possible. Its such a shame that games like the original Silent Hill series are going extinct. Nowadays, developers just cash in to those generic FPS.
What is Masahiro Ito saying about the face covering scene starting at 19:11? He talks for a pretty long time, I'm sure he must have said a lot more than what the subtitles are telling us!
"They might even be your neighbours" Well, the moment my neighbours are trying to physically damage me, no matter if I recognize them, I will surely act. It is not like Heather got a big friendly hug. They were actually hurting her. She was not just thinking that. She could get physical damage from that. In such a situation it should no longer matter what you see.
I loved this game so much, its the first horror game and first Silent Hill game I ever played. When I bought this game, I had to wait for 2 weeks before I even dared to play it, I was so scared of it xDD But loved every minute I was playing it, though I got so scared a couple of times I had to stop playing it.
(SPOILERS AHEAD) Well, remember that part in the orphanage or whatever it was. Where you meet that kid who looks suspiciously like Murphys son, and he tells you about Pyra- I mean the boogeyman. And then later on he is killed in front of you by The But-I mean The Boogeyman in order to make Muprhy feel guilt for the death of his son. And you know that scene in Silent Hill 2 where you see Maria die, who looks suspiciously like Mary. She gets killed by PH in order to make James feel guilt (Cont)
@ElegeantFencer It's so impressive for the PS2. I always think skin in this game looks better than in newer games. Skin always looks too shiny, except for here.
Owaku's statement was a creator commentary comment found in Lost Memories. If you're talking about Ito, it was a twitter. It's likely long gone, but I have images of the posts floating around the net, and so does the questioner himself. google: Masahiro Ito confirms TSHRE "Multiple Dimension Theory" The last question was loosely: so you meant the same world twists into another over the person actually getting warped to another? Ito then said that both the actually "exist at same dimension".
Masahiro Ito confirmed on his Tweeter that Lisa was killed by Valtiel before Harry arrives to Silent Hill. Ito and Owaku showed that episode in Silent Hill Cage Of Cradle.

I once noticed that there is a sound in the battle with alessas memory, that was used in shadow hearts too ^^
The mysterious voice :D
And now, Kojima said goodbye and we don't get Silent Hills. DANG IT.
Some products could only come out of Japan and there are millions of secrets behind this fact. RIP Silent Hill series
I really wish to play Silent Hill 3 for the first time again T________T
What a masterpiece. The whole SH team were such pioneers.
Imagine being in the room where they do the acting and voicing like those guys standing on the sides. It'd be legendary :O
Must have watched this over a 100 times back in the day
The idea of Valtiel was present from the beginning in the form of the Incubus and the Seal Of Metatron, booth representations of an entity designed by God to protect Alessa.
Team Silent in the world of videogames was like the Beatles in the world of music. It just won't happen again
the best game ever silent hill...
Such a tragic shame that Silent Hills was never made, imagine it as a full virtual reality experience?, damn, I couldn't believe how amazing it looked watching my little bro play that demo.. genuinely looked like a bad fever dream... what a shame 😪
Silent Hill 2 and 3 THE BESTS FOREVER!
Musics too
theme of Laura
you're not here
Correction: 1, 2 & 3..
@@Stigmatix666 eh
Also, Lost Memories goes on to talk about time being transcended over anything else, and that time has no continuity in highly infected areas. Its like the theory of time perception while asleep.
An example of bending time would be Laura outside the window after James went through nightmare hospital. That would have taken quite some time, but everything outside the hospital simply stopped to those within it. Another would be reentering the hotel stairwell after Angela left through the entrance.
This game is a masterpiece... The best one in my opinion.
probably the last greatest silent hill game that they have made
loved that i finally got to hear the original baby crying at the end.. will never understand why they took that out
Yes! I was really looking forward to a making of for the 3rd one. My favorite one!
I always found it funny how when Harry is found dead. He's in almost the exact same position and in a very similar chair as the dead James Sunderland that our James Sunderland found.
I never noticed that lol. I wonder if that was intentional, or some kind of Freudian slip.
This is not a game but a Journey.
Much better than the recent games!)
thanks for uploading this
it was a great watch
i wish for a sequel to silent hill 3,a continue with heather..it will be extraordinary!!
Silent Hill, Silent Hill 2, Silent Hill 3.. so good! ..SH4 The Room was an interesting oddity. After that, it was GAME OVER for Silent Hill
Akira Yamaoka earned his retirement. I hope his successor does so too.
21:42 that zoomout was perfect, ceiling lamp started looking like a halo, great cameraman
Akira loves Garbage - this is my favorite band too, nice )
No mention of one of the freakiest monsters in this game for me; the floating thing you barely see that emits an eldritch screech. In other news, how awesome would it have been if they managed to get PJ Harvey herself to sing the main theme!? I imagine that would've considerably added to the budget.
I recently finished the original SH3 and the game was sweet. No buggy HD Collection for me, thanks! This Making Of and SH2's are always entertaining to watch. I like how SH2's characters are thanked in the credits; too bad SH3's MO doesn't have it.
that solo at 13:18 tho
What is that song? Also rip doggy
I am blown away with the amount of effort the developers to make the game as scary as possible. Its such a shame that games like the original Silent Hill series are going extinct. Nowadays, developers just cash in to those generic FPS.
They even made the 'making of' doc off-kilter. I love these guys.
This is passion
Great too see the making of my favorite horror game
WOW!!! No dislikes, let's hope it stays that way. This is coming from a big Silent Hill fan.
I LOVE Silent Hill 3!!!
What is Masahiro Ito saying about the face covering scene starting at 19:11? He talks for a pretty long time, I'm sure he must have said a lot more than what the subtitles are telling us!
Nope, that's how languages work, different languages require different quantity of words spoken to the same sentences.
Only the Europeans saw the need to develop special videos for this series huh?
I think part of the reason was because the UK always got the game much later than either the US or Japanese versions and this is a quality bonus.
finally! thanks for the upload
"They might even be your neighbours"
Well, the moment my neighbours are trying to physically damage me, no matter if I recognize them, I will surely act. It is not like Heather got a big friendly hug. They were actually hurting her. She was not just thinking that. She could get physical damage from that. In such a situation it should no longer matter what you see.
I loved this game so much, its the first horror game and first Silent Hill game I ever played. When I bought this game, I had to wait for 2 weeks before I even dared to play it, I was so scared of it xDD But loved every minute I was playing it, though I got so scared a couple of times I had to stop playing it.
such a great team and now there are all gone
(SPOILERS AHEAD) Well, remember that part in the orphanage or whatever it was. Where you meet that kid who looks suspiciously like Murphys son, and he tells you about Pyra- I mean the boogeyman. And then later on he is killed in front of you by The But-I mean The Boogeyman in order to make Muprhy feel guilt for the death of his son. And you know that scene in Silent Hill 2 where you see Maria die, who looks suspiciously like Mary. She gets killed by PH in order to make James feel guilt (Cont)
love the person walking in the background at 23:45! the music syncs up!
@ElegeantFencer It's so impressive for the PS2. I always think skin in this game looks better than in newer games. Skin always looks too shiny, except for here.
Owaku's statement was a creator commentary comment found in Lost Memories.
If you're talking about Ito, it was a twitter. It's likely long gone, but I have images of the posts floating around the net, and so does the questioner himself.
google: Masahiro Ito confirms TSHRE "Multiple Dimension Theory"
The last question was loosely: so you meant the same world twists into another over the person actually getting warped to another? Ito then said that both the actually "exist at same dimension".
Akira Yamaoka so banged those voice actresses
Masahiro Ito confirmed on his Tweeter that Lisa was killed by Valtiel before Harry arrives to Silent Hill.
Ito and Owaku showed that episode in Silent Hill Cage Of Cradle.
This needs more views!!
Douglass looks like Old Joseph Joestar
Wish team silent would come back!
Akira you are the master
Thank you VERY MUCH for uploading! =)
