Please note that in my opinion only shrimps and snails are suitable for such small setups. I have added the pair of guppies temporarily for the video shoot and cycling of the tank. They will be housed back to my main propagation tank after a couple of weeks. This will be a shrimp and snail tank only in the longer run. Also this is a Walstad style setup and hence no filter or CO2 has been used. It is meant to develop into a thriving ecosystem. The plants will act as a natural filter so more plants, the better it is. However it will need regular water changes and maintenance to keep the plants and livestock in good health. Fertiliser dosing will also be needed for plant growth.
@@TheUrbanNemophilist That's great. I look forward to seeing more. Maybe a paludarium or two would combine both the beauty of an aquascape with your skills of terrariums.
It's an amazing build! And I love how this going to ge a shrimp/snail setup in the long run! I realy would like to do something like this myself some day!
amazing work !! but i do have some questions - which fertiliser would you suggest for this setup ? Also do we need to put any co2 supplement if we want to maintain this in longer run ? finally can we put 2 shrimps and 2 snails in this size ? or will this be overcrowded ? what do you suggest ?
Thank you. This is so helpful - in addition to being beautiful to watch. I'm very encouraged by your take on the Walstad method. (Garden soil never worked for me) I'm eager to give your way a try!
@@TheUrbanNemophilist Got it. Thank you so much. Are there any maintenance besides adding water and trimming plants? (Such as adding more bacteria powder, adding nutrient) Do you have to take some snails/shrimps if it's overcrowded?
Awesome setup, sir. I have a question if anyone could spare some time. I have a tank with 6*9*6 inches dimensions and I have difficulties choosing which filter system to use. Is mechanical filter just a good choice overall or could I use other filter types that don't require electricity? Since the tank is very small, I am doubting a mechanical filter is required.
Where did u get that jar. Any links to buy it. Please & this is my first time I want to try the same way as u shown in the video can I go with betta in it, do u suggest me.?
i am worried that where i live, if i open the window in cold days the room temperature will drop at least 7C° in minutes, would that affect the shrimps in this jar? also if the water is less than 25°C in general, as the room is about 21°C max in general, can that not be a good idea to have an unheated jar in that room ?
Shrimp will need a heater if the room where the tank is kept goes below the recommended temperature of 18 C for extended periods of time. They also need a heater if rapid temperature changes are possible (e.g. by a window that gets opened frequently)
Yes it will. The tank must be cycled with water changes for about 3-4 weeks before shrimp can be added. And the tank will need a lot of live plants. More the better.
I'm really glad you cleared up the fact that that wasn't the guppies permanent new home, because that's way too small for them. Do you know what kind of snails and shrimp are going in there yet?
Just pre fill the tube with water from a tap. Keep your thumb on one end and dip the other end in the tank. Remove the thumb at the other end and water will flow out.
Very nice video. Am looking to start with something simple like this as a first project. Can I ask you what kind of a light have you used? And any tips for a first timer?
how are you going to deal with overgrowth? My only problem with this kind of small setup is overgrowth of the plant. more you trim , more stem they will develop so whats your strategy?
That's really cool dude I put the aqua soil in the middle too and then cover it on the sides. How'd you get your tube to suck out water without putting it in your mouth is there a trick or is that a special device?
Thanks. Yes, just fill the tube with water from a tap. Place your thumb or finger on one opening. Submerge the other opening in water and release your thumb at the other end. Water will flow out.
Please note that in my opinion only shrimps and snails are suitable for such small setups.

So would the shrimp not climb the sticks and jump out?
Amano shrimps might. These ones usually do not climb out.
What grow light is that? And what is the little platform the jar is on?

For Walstad method no filter required. You can use sponge filter or a small hang on back filter.

So do you have to cycle the water once you have the snails and shrimps, if so, how often? How do you clean the 'waste' they produce too? Thanks!
No further cycling needed. I will do water changes, siphon off dirt during process and keep the glass clean.
