Not a kind of society I want to live in where people would rather touch a screen than interact with a person for 4 seconds. And I consider myself an introvert. People litterally are drowning in social anxiety these days. It's sad. That's what you get telling people "Don't talk to strangers!" For 3 generations.

I, for one, would like to know when the costs that the stores are saving by making the customer have to take on more of the tasks of checking themselves out and bagging their own groceries are going to start passing down to the shoppers? When we had to start bringing our own bags, I thought that was enough, and I don't remember any discussion back then about us being required to bag our own items also. I remember how shocked I was the first time I brought my own bags and set them down on the conveyor belt where the cashier could easily see them but instead of her picking them up to use she pushed them back towards me and then turned her back to me and started happily gabbing with her fellow cashier, ignoring me completely. Isn't there some training that used to be given to cashiers on how to treat the customer and properly bag the customers purchases? I always thought of that as a part of customer service. I wonder how much savings go to the stores from us having to bag our own stuff and how much of this savings is returned to the shopper. I don't remember any drop in prices on retail purchases since these new practices started, I only remember feeling snubbed by the cashiers and being treated rudely, like being ignored when I was accostumed to the cashier bagging my purchases for me. It was sort of a "thank you for shopping with us", a sign of respect and appreciation. After all, the cashier only has a paycheck because we're shopping at their store. So I don't feel one bit bad about automation taking their jobs away from them.

Self-checkout is just a way for stores to make more money (fees for person accused of theft), save money (by not hiring cashiers), and having fun (giving a person a criminal record for life).

Make self checkout so you can dump $20.00 or $30.00 in coins in a hopper, we won’t have this coin shortage.

Wallymart has its own scam going against its shoppers. Every time I go through the self-checkout stands, the machines ALWAYS fail on me and I have to wait for a "REAL" wallymart person to come and enter her password so I can continue on scanning the rest of my cart and go home. Why wallymart likes fucking with people I don't know but after I complained to corporate, the problem has very magically vanished...for me....

Same here. Except Walmart has begun opening fewer registers with cashiers. I've been known to leave my full cart right there in the front of the store. From here on in I plan to go fill it up with frozen/refrigerated foods before I abandon it.

Now that it's 2022, I can give a GREAT reason why stores are going to self checkouts. I help manage a retail store, so I have some insight. Our biggest problem is not enough workers to run cashier machines. Retail pays so little and smart workers will not want to work at a job that is 8 hours of rude and entitled customers. Plus, it's rough on the body and people have finally said ENOUGH. We go through so many applications, but no one takes jobs in the service industry anymore. My company starts out at $8.25 an hour, so I don't blame people when they turn it down. Plus, they want morning shifts and weekends off, which is NOT going to happen. Those are reserved to the employees who have been there for years. Self Checkouts really are filling the void of lack of employees. If I could, I would have all my lanes open and self checkouts would be thrown in the trash, but I have no choice. If we gave people a living wage there would be a lot more help in the service industry. Until then, you gotta do it yourself.

I love using self check outs.
As an introvert / met too many toxic people in my life. I prefer to just scan and bag the items myself. With zero risk of drama with another human

@@wm3293 Yes but you still have to deal with the cashier and the fact that most of them can't be bothered to be polite to you or thank you for shopping at their workplace and helping to keep them employed. No gratitude at all. They're spending this time glancing at the clock to see how long until they can leave.

The idea only works in moderation. If you have for example 10,5 or even less items. Standing in a long line just for a few items is annoying. Doing it yourself goes faster but there are draw backs to it as well, if you have a cart full of items then doing it yourself can take longer and then you have those tiny areas that don’t hold hardly enough making it a juggling act. Then you have those that’ll be purchasing large ticket items and trying to make it look like they are scanning it to fool cameras when in reality they are stealing.
So how do you combat this? Hire security guards. So the employee you just fired you then hired someone to keep watch. The stores around my area have security trucks now that monitor parking lots, driving around all day. So now you are paying ever increasing fuel costs, maintenance on vehicles, and the crew of security guards. The store looks more like a prison than a grocery store at times.

Customers don’t understand you being rude to a cashier then they’re not going to want to work. It’s simple it’s not their fault it’s the customers fault for treating people wrong. Thanks u learned something from a 21 year old .

The Self checkouts started back when we had full service gas stations big business companies decided they came out with new gas pumps and a lot of propaganda advertising they could convince people to pump their gas it was called the modern way and you get get a chance to pump your own gas it worked all those people that used to pump your gas had to go find new jobs The gas wasn’t any cheaper they just got you to do it your self and they didn’t have to hire someone to do it smart business strategy now the grocery stores lumber companies and everybody else wants to get on the bandwagon

This is exactly why we need to cut back on immigration (legal and illegal) which the majority is unskilled. We have plenty of unskilled people in the country. 20 yrs ago cashiers were teenagers, today it is immigrants and the teenagers are unemployed wanting socialism.
