- You may have heard of “tip fatigue” or “tipflation,” but now, we’re starting to see “tip creep” when people are asked to leave gratuities at self-checkout machines, some calling it “emotional blackmail.”
CBS 8 talked with San Diegans about what they think of this growing trend.
“I think it’s odd, yes, the tip is for work being done above and beyond and doing extra,” said Kim Laramie. “So if nobody is doing the work for me, why would I be tipping them?”
The rise of self-checkout has eliminated the need for customers to interact with employees in businesses across the United States, but it hasn’t eliminated the option to provide a tip.

Every single person needs to say fuck that
LMAO!!! Every single time!!
So let me get this straight, I go into a store, grab a cart, put the items I want into the cart, then have to empty the cart at the self checkout then at payment they ask me if I want to give a tip no I don't think so I'll ask them if I would get a discount for doing all the work.
I would love to put the tip in this automated system but I can't find the appropriate port. And by the time I get my pants down the loud angry employees start treating me awful. Three thumbs down for my local Wal-Mart. Walgreens on the other hand gets 3 thumbs down because of the unsanitary conditions involving their payment methods.
I did tip. I took $10 out of my right pocket, and put it into my left pocket.
Tip is only used when a server/waitress or a person who takes your order and serves your order to your table in a restaurant like if you’re dining to a Denny’s or somewhere else. Which means you rate the service of your server! That’s called tipping. Tipping at a kiosk or takeout isn’t stick to the “old fashion” not this…
Why should the customer pay for the rating of the server? That's the employer's responsibility at evaluation time.
Yes it’s the responsibility of the employers but a customer feedback can also help the business plus gives encouragement for the employees. In my experience I was a server before and definetely loved reading customers comments which gave me more encouragement and then my boss found out. Basically you help the employee stand out and boss will give a raise.
@@Guest2022_ I am for feedback on comment cards or social media. But shame me for tips is a no. They should be doing a good job to begin. And even with crappy service they still expect a above and beyond tip. A tip also is supposed to be based on the service you received. Well if the service wasn't above and beyond then whey is a tip expected? And now they ask for fees to cover health insurance, employee retention etc. It's what out of hand. If the business can't afford to pay their employees then they shouldn't be operating a business.
Don't, its a waste of money.
Tipping at self checkout is like tipping an auto mechanic or a doctor after they perform the work. Not likely to happen.
Just don't tip not that hard 🤷♂️
Eh everyone gotta use a buzzword to describe a situation that is a nothing burger
I do tip for service above and beyond. I don't tip because the meal I ordered was brought to my table. I don't feel responsible for the welfare of the restaurant staff. I didn't hire them. The restaurant owner did. If the restaurants' staff is OK with $2.15/hr wage - why should I worry? If they were NOT happy, they would strike nationwide, or at least statewide. They don't.... BTW, don't ask me to tip at self-checkouts. I took the groceries off the shelf; I put them in my cart. I went through a self-checkout scanning every item, and I even put my shopping in my OWN bag. I know, nobody will think of tipping me for doing all the work - but don't I at least deserve a discount?
Why would I tip at a self checkout? Makes no sense so the answer is no. It is not that hard to decline though so you can just ignore this.
What about when there is no skip or no option
people that tip at self checkout are tripping
I would be looking for the Candid Camera.
Hell no !!! 😡
It’s gone from yeah I’ll tip to now no one gets a tip.
Which stores are asking for gratuity at self checkout? Vons on Balboa?
No way
I think it's time to get a class action lawsuit against these greedy corporations!
Shouldn't people get a discount for doing the work of people who aren't there?
I don’t think so
They should tip the people that check them out and pack their crap simultaneously. That’s real repetitive work. It’s really shit that those workers don’t get anything.
So I can tip shareholders that are already making money off of someone else's labors?
Only tip when a waiter or waitress serves you
100% fuck no
Only worthless and poorly-run companies which don't properly compensate their employees do this.
Nope.
Get rid of tipping and just include all taxes and fees in the price displayed like in Europe and Asia 👍 🏧💳👍🇺🇸🇨🇦🚨
Tipping is a joke for doing your job description that you applied for? If I am not asking you to do something that is above and beyond or my kids aren't creating a mess then why should you expect a tip? Tip you what you think you are worth? Well for you to just lazily slapping a burger in a bag is not worth worth 15% of the cost of my order. And why do you deserve a tip when I did most of the work? And do you tip every worker at every business you solicit that do a hell of a lot more work than you do? Do you tip your garbage man? Do you tip the cashier at the grocery store? The customer service person who helped you? Hell no you don't. I know people who work in the food industry who make a ton of money just on tips alone on top of their salary. And they are getting paid more than these people who cry and claim they only get a few dollars an hour. Tipping is a scam.
my god just touch „no tipp“. no one is forcing you
No there not 😂...
Pavlov's dog much.
I work as a cashier and a while ago I had told my wife that We should start getting tips so if self checkout does they should make it so we get some too u tip a lot of other places so why not your cashiers
People have to operate those machines, clean them, do lots of bitch worker
I don’t trust the automated system though. Do the underpaid workers get these tips for their gas money?
Do some reporting! Stop blaming the employees and employers for this trend. Tip screens are required by the point of purchase companies because they take 3.5% on each tip transaction.
That’s not true.
I have a way of dealing with people who demand tips. Did you vote for Biden? yeah? *tips fedora*
i dont tip for anything the person with the job makes more than me
