Hi Rob Squad! I haven’t even watched this yet but wanted to jump in. I worked with Mr. Stafford in the early 1980’s on a TV Show he co-hosted called Those Amazing Animals. My fondest memory is I was in charge of the runners on that show on shoot day. But I also was able to get an assignment to pick up Mr. Stafford at LAX on Sunday night and take him home. So I took the company Caddie and went to the airport. Greeted him and took him to the car. It was Sunday evening in Los Angeles in the 80’s. That meant Dr. Demento was on the radio. So I tuned it to the station and we had a nice drive to his home. Chatting and laughing at the songs. He was great to me and I have fond memories and I do have his album from the 70’s before I got to work with him. I already know you loved it, how could you not? Check out; My Girl Bill, for more greatness. Joe Edit: I watched the video Amber & Rob. As expected you loved it. Jim was magical and a cool guy and still around. ❤️ If you saw my story, first hand experience. I left a suggestion above for a funny. But you also, said you’d like to smile. I got another for that category. I know you love Carpenters, like me. I’m an OG fan from 1970 with my Close To You album. A song from that album which I believe you’ve reacted to is; We’ve Only Just Begun. What I’m recommending is for the first time in 54 years a proper cover of that song was created. Oh, no one can properly cover a Carpenters song, you say? I beg to differ and I’m OG. So I’m older and can be taken seriously. Get ready to smile, or stare or however you will react, just feel the wonder. James Wilkas created this cover with musicians from around the world and it features Tori Holub on lead and backing vocals. 300,000 views on RUclips, 4 Million views on I G. No autotune or pitch correction as verified by Wings Of Pegasus. We’ve Only Just Begun (Cover) ruclips.net/video/J95lfJqo9VY/видео.htmlsi=HgF_NnAGjIMriV1E .
Did you ever hear the Showdown song Welcome to The Rodeo? It will also stick in your head for decades after one listen. Well, its 40 below and I don't give a f*ck, got a heater in my truck and I'm off to the rodeo...
Thanks Jay and Amber for another gem from 1974. This song was inescapable on the radio. You should listen to his follow-up hit, My Girl Bill. Years ahead of its time and quite funny.
Jay and Amber, you mentioned Ray Stevens. You should listen to two of his #1 hits: The Streak, a comedy single from 1974, and then Everything Is Beautiful, a gorgeous tune from 1970 that starts with a children’s choir. You’ll find it uplifting!
Nobody knows this unless they had the record! It’s a great Halloween song and I’m always hoping one of the reactors will hit this some day. Great song!
"Spiders & Snakes" is a 1974 hit song recorded by Jim Stafford and written by Stafford and David Bellamy of The Bellamy Brothers. It was the second of four U.S. Top 40 singles released from his eponymous debut album and also the highest-charting at number three. The lyrics in the verses are spoken, while only the chorus is sung. The song begins with the narrator being asked by a girl, Mary Lou, to walk her home from school, which he accepts. She says that she would like to spend some time alone together instead of going right home; the narrator agrees. They go to the swimming hole. While there, the narrator catches a frog on a hollow log. He shakes it at her saying "This frog's for you." Mary Lou informs him that she dislikes spiders and snakes. She adds that his actions are not the way to bring about a romantic response from her. After a while, the narrator phones her to get together again. She says that she'll see him after school. He is nervous this time, thinking of another scheme, when Mary Lou again tells him clearly of her dislike for spiders and snakes, reiterating the same unromantic reasons. “Spiders and Snakes” finished as the #53 song on NYC Radio’s 77 WABC’s Top 100 of 1974.
Please do "Lord it's Hard to be Humble by Mac Davis next. It was the UNREP break-away song used onboard my first ship USS Niagara Falls (AFS-3). The crew asked Mac to do a personalized version of this song for Capt Terry - he loved Davis and this tune - and he actually took the time and did it. It's hard to be humble when you're prefect in every way! Cheers....
“The Streak” by Ray Stevens. In the mid-70s, streaking (running naked through a public place) was a big fad. Ray capitalized on this phenomenon with a hit song. A streaker even ran across the stage during the Academy Awards in 1974! David Niven was behind the microphone and made a priceless quip. Yes, it’s on RUclips. Also hilarious: “When You’re Hot, You’re Hot!” by Jerry Reed. This popular song became a catchphrase. Jerry tells the story of a crap game with his buddies.
Jim Stafford and Spiders & Snakes peaked at #3 on the US Billboard Hot 100 the week of March 2, 1974. The rest of the top 10 that week: 1) Seasons In The Sun - Terry Jacks 2) The Way We Were - Barbara Streisand 3) Spiders & Snakes - Jim Stafford 4) Boogie Down - Eddie Kendricks 5) Jungle Boogie - Kool & The Gang 6) Rock On - David Essex 7) Until You Come Back To Me ( That's What I'm Going To Do) - Aretha Franklin 8) Love's Theme - Love Unlimited Orchestra 9) Dark Lady - Cher 10) Put Your Hands Together - The O'Jays
Always liked these funny songs. There are a couple more from my youth you could checkout. “Dead Skunk” (in the middle of the road) from 1972 by Loudon Wainwright. Also, Ray Stevens classic, “The Streak” from 1974. It’s about the “streaking” phenomenon of the early/mid 70’s. Both fun songs👍
I had the opportunity to meet and greet Jim Stafford back in 2012 at his show in Branson he performed at for many years. I sat in the front row center.
Randy Newman's "Short People" from 1978 is hilarious and actually caused some controversy. That's because some "short people" took offense to the lyrics. One artist you haven't done from the 60's is folk singer Phil Ochs, who was a contemporary of Bob Dylan. He mostly wrote about civil rights and other major issues of the time. One anti-war song he did actually has an amusing take on the then-military draft. "Draft Dodger Rag" is amusing and will allow you to dip into his impressive catalog of songs.
Back in 1987, (yes, I'm old), I got to watch a live episode of "The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour" the Dirty Dancers were the guest, but Jim Stafford was the guy that talked to the studio audience, and he was hilarious.
I was driving to school when this came on the radio for the first time back in January of 1974, and I almost wrecked my old station wagon, I was laughing so hard!!🤣 Jim Stafford, Ray Stevens, Jerry Reed.. they were all country comedians, and a lot of their stuff crossed over to the hit list on regular 'rock' radio at the time.😄👍👍
She rode into town on a moped she called flame... I remember hearing this song for the first time when it came out. We died laughing at this line. And about watching your step when the chips were down... Yippy I O!!
My oldest brother God rest his soul just loved Jim Stafford along with so many from the era. He used to play them on his guitar and sang them also for us. Great music from an amazing time to grow up. Keep them coming p.ease they bring back awesome memories.
Jim Stafford put a lot of smiles on a lot of faces... one of those faces was mine. Roger Miller was another artist who could make you sing along and laugh at the same time. Or Lewie Wickham. Or Ray Stevens. Or Jerry Reed. It was a fun era of music.
I remember seeing Jim Stafford on talk shows and comedy specials. He's a naturally funny guy and a heck of a guitar player. Some Jim Stafford songs to check out include: "Swamp Witch" "My Girl Bill" "Your Bulldog Drinks Champagne" "I Got Stoned and I Missed It" "Cow Patti"
It’s years since I last heard this incredibly funny song. Great to hear it again. I was so glad to hear Amber doesn’t kill spiders. They eat all the bugs you don’t want in the house.
That chika-chika, wakuh-wakuh sound is done on a guitar. This song was popular when I was in 6th grade....and we loved it! My wife would concur, in that she doesn't like spiders and snakes either!
Mac Davis "It's Hard To Be Humble"
YES!
Good one!

My dad’s favourite!

My Girl Bill by Jim Stafford, that's the one you need to hear next!
I came here to say the same thing.
Yes ❤

I wholeheartedly agree....Please sample "My Girl Bill"
Jim Stafford has a song called the" Ballad of cow patty"
Swamp Witch Hattie
It's just "Cow Patti"
My Girl Bill
Don't forget " Wildwood weed"
On a moped called flame
Jim Stafford, believe it or not, was a world class guitarist along with the likes of Roy Clark. Two of probably the top 5 ever.
He is also self taught on not only the guitar but also the fiddle, piano, banjo, organ and harmonica.
@@stevedavis5704Cool!
I believe it. I saw him in Branson Missouri.
Saw him in Vegas.
As well as Glen Campbell. Three of the top 5, IMHO.
Jim and Dolly Parton did this as a skit on his or her show. It was adorable and they could barely keep from laughing.
~Red
You posted first. I was just going to put a comment on that skit. Dolly with that big taffy lollipop. Just so Cute.
That was great& them trying not to laugh made the skit.
I have to google that skit right now! Lol
That skit is here on RUclips. I watch it every once in a while.

There's Jerry Reed's When You're Hot, You're Hot. Or Ray Steven's The Streak.
Jerry Reed singing "She Got the Gold Mine (I Got the Shaft)".
Jerry Reed doing Amos Moses.
Ray Steven’s The Streak😂😂😂❤❤you’ll love it
And Ray’s Guitarzan.
Think they did that one@@brianmoss4832
still makes me smile and laugh after 50+ years- what great music should be

Appreciate the story! Loved this song when it was out. I must have been around 11 yrs old.
@@jbs256 Yes. I've played with him and against him, doubles.
I remember Those Amazing Animals, but not who was involved with it. Thanks for sharing! Nice story and memory.
I haven't heard this song in damn near 40 years, and i can still sing it word for word.
Did you ever hear the Showdown song Welcome to The Rodeo? It will also stick in your head for decades after one listen. Well, its 40 below and I don't give a f*ck, got a heater in my truck and I'm off to the rodeo...
OMG have not heard this since the 70's. Makes me laugh .
Roger Miller is a good for funny, happy songs. "You can't roller skate in a buffalo herd", "Dang me", "King of the Road", "Do-wacka-do", "chug-a-lug".
This is a classic!!!
1970s BABY PARTY NIGHT
Thanks Jay and Amber for another gem from 1974. This song was inescapable on the radio. You should listen to his follow-up hit, My Girl Bill. Years ahead of its time and quite funny.
Yep, My Girl Bill... gotta get to the end to find out it's not what you thought it was about.
1974. I must have been singing this in school in second grade. I remember us giggling while singing it.
Jay and Amber, you mentioned Ray Stevens. You should listen to two of his #1 hits: The Streak, a comedy single from 1974, and then Everything Is Beautiful, a gorgeous tune from 1970 that starts with a children’s choir. You’ll find it uplifting!
@MrSteveLoucks Those are both great suggestions
Oh gosh yes, "My Girl Bill" is too funny!
Jim Stafford was also one hell-of-a-guitar player...
And tennis player.
Hell, yeah!
I remember Jim Stafford having a variety show back in the 70's. If i can remember, it didn't last long but it was so funny
It was only a summer series, so it was a limited run.
He started out as a guest on a local tv variety show in Cincinnati, The Bob Braun Show. You should listen to Dead Skunk next if you haven't already
Swamp Witch!!
Save this one for Halloween.
Nobody knows this unless they had the record! It’s a great Halloween song and I’m always hoping one of the reactors will hit this some day. Great song!
I haven't heard this song since the 70's and forgot all about it!!!! Thank you for this Jay and Amber! ❤
Me too!
Jim did a great version of Mr. Bojangles and of course My Girl Bill is great.
Yes!! Definitively My girl Bill!!
Suave song.
We loved Jim Stafford back in the day.

Jim is also a crazy good guitarist.
I saw him in Branson about 4 years ago and he is still great. Swamp Witch is also fantastic.
You would probably love Swamp Witch by Jim Stafford as well.
God! I’ve been trying to remember that title. Thanks!
Jim Stafford also is amazing on the guitar!!!
Loved this song in elementary school,. we would sing it all the time.
Awww, Jim Stafford. I played tennis with him a couple of times. He's got a serious forehand.
Jim Stafford was briefly married to Bobbie Gentry between 1978 and 1980.
They have a child, too.
“The Streak” by Ray Stevens. In the mid-70s, streaking (running naked through a public place) was a big fad. Ray capitalized on this phenomenon with a hit song. This really brings me back to my childhood. Wow, I haven't heard this song in decades! The chorus is still as catchy as ever, 50 years on.
Reminds me, for some reason, of Glenn Campbell's "I love my truck". It's funny how the strangest songs become hits!

Haven't heard that song in ages. Thanks for bringin it back around.
Can't Roller Skate in a Buffalo Herd!! (It's a little dated, but fun!)
That's an old Roger Miller song. He had some pretty funny stuff, too.
Roger Miller could write a sing about anything.
I had the opportunity to meet and greet Jim Stafford back in 2012 at his show in Branson he performed at for many years. I sat in the front row center.
Awww one of my Momma's favorite songs!❤❤
For a couple more Jim Stafford's songs check out "A Real Good Time" or "Swamp Witch"
"Swamp Witch" really manages to be unsettling.
Jerry Reed with The Bird is a funny one.
You gotta hear My Girl Bill!
Such a fun song , ❤
This was a big hit back then. Tons of great music in the early 70's too.
I fell in love with Jim when I first saw him on *the Smothers Brothers Show*. I got to see him perform and have his autograph. He is wonderfulness.
I love this song. Probably his most "mainstream" song. It was a huge hit.
I think the song that put him on the map was more mainstream than this. Called "Swamp Witch". "Spiders & Snakes" came later.
He did a duet of this song with Dolly Parton, totally funny
Randy Newman's "Short People" from 1978 is hilarious and actually caused some controversy. That's because some "short people" took offense to the lyrics. A good Jim Stafford song for spooky time in October would be Swamp Witch .
The Last Chant as well.
Two other Jim Stafford songs to check out-My Girl Bill and I Got Stoned and I Missed It.
When I was 8 my parents took me to my first concert where he opened up for Olivia Newton-John in 1975 at the Indiana State Fair.
It’s pure fun watching you two hear songs like this for the first time :). Thank you both for sharing this with us!
Lost in the goofy lyrics is some really cool music. He was a great musician.
This was played all the time back in the day, such a great song.
Love Spiders & Snakes. Perfect for 13 year-olds. We knew all the lyrics to it and The Streak when they came out. Give My Girl Bill a listen.
This is a song in nearly 50 years. This still tickles my soul.
Hadn’t heard this song for a few years. And sharing it with you two again made it that much better. Love your reactions.
I remember this song from when I was a kid. I liked it then, but you guys always give me more appreciation of old songs. Thanks guys!
Awesome song. Remember from back in the day. He was very popular Love this song!
I was 13 or 14 when this came out...the song is unforgettable
LOVE Jim Stafford. It's part of growing up in the seventies. This was one of the songs in the soundtrack of those years. Great tune!
I was driving to school when this came on the radio for the first time back in January of 1974, and I almost wrecked my old station wagon, I was laughing so hard!!🤣 Jim Stafford, Ray Stevens, Jerry Reed.. they were all country comedians, and a lot of their stuff crossed over to the hit list on regular 'rock' radio at the time.😄👍👍
Jim Stafford "Cow Patty" hilarious song!!!
Your next reaction to Jim should be My girl Bill. It’s so funny.
Next will Have to be..."Cow Patti"...
She rode into town on a moped she called flame... I remember hearing this song for the first time when it came out. We died laughing at this line. And about watching your step when the chips were down... Yippy I O!!

No, you were clearly about minus 32 when this song came out lol!!
One of the best guitarists ever. A master
Jim Stafford put a lot of smiles on a lot of faces... one of those faces was mine. Roger Miller was another artist who could make you sing along and laugh at the same time. Or Lewie Wickham. Or Ray Stevens. Or Jerry Reed. It was a fun era of music.
I had totally forgotten this song! Loved it as a kid. Thanks for the memory! And 2nd the suggestion for Mac Davis "It's hard to be humble"!!!!
Blast from the past! This song was fun to sing along to as kids.
my kids LOVED this song way back in the day!!! They are 50 - 53 now & still love this song!!!
Great one from Jim!! 😂❤

It’s years since I last heard this incredibly funny song. Great to hear it again. I was so glad to hear Amber doesn’t kill spiders. They eat all the bugs you don’t want in the house.
You guys are on a roll today, three great songs.love it😊
Oh yeah song brings me back to my teens.
That chika-chika, wakuh-wakuh sound is done on a guitar.
This song was popular when I was in 6th grade....and we loved it!
My wife would concur, in that she doesn't like spiders and snakes either!
Omg ❤so many childhood memories here!
Heard this one on the radio a lot in my early childhood. Hadnt heard it in years....nice trip back.
Lol, memories of my high school times come back with this one. They played this one on the radio quite a bit.
Good memories, fun times. Thank you two awesome people!
Another classic tune from 1974! Rob Squad is knocking it out of the park today! Great reviews!!!!
My gosh, I adored this song when I was a kid. I was a tomboy who loved spiders and snakes, so I thought this was the perfect song. Haha!
Jim Stafford plays amazing classical guitar music as well. He's hugely talented and doesn't get nearly enough credit for his skills as a musician.
Another of Jim's songs that will make you wonder......"MY GIRL BILL" !
50 years later, I still love this song. 😎
The Ballad of Uneasy Rider by Charlie Daniels is really funny, too.
Omg I was just thinking about that one
To this day I know all the words to that ballad. Long haired hippy type pinko fag!
Favorite song by him! 👍🏻
Great vibes with this funny song. Really loved it when it came out and still do.
Great funny song
Jim Stafford and Ray Stevens both had several hits each with this type of humorous novelty song late 60s, early 70s.
