The fact that those in power can allow one of the predominant cities in the country to go bankrupt, is an absolutely alarming failure of our governing systems.

They draw up a budget, 70% of which goes into their bank account. Project ends up using the rest of its bloated funding in unecessary ways to justify receiving it so they will continue to be able to claim that amount for future projects. I've worked to bid on contracts with various councils around the country. You'd be shocked at both the level of incompetence, but also bungs that take place to secure contracts, even on relatively small contracts that don't exceed £50k. But £100m? Even some light skimming off the top on contracts like that will leave the beneficiaries able to walk away and retire on. The only way to tackle this, is for central government to launch a full investigation which will likely find criminal activity and thus criminal charges brought. These people need bringing to justice and locking up. It'll be a warning to other councils involved in the same. Any council that goes bust must be fully investigated, and no, simply blaming "gov't cuts" doesn't cut it.

MONEY COULDNT BUY A WORSE COUNCIL. Have been sadly lacking for many years a lot caused by employing under qualified people as part of equality and equal opps. 17 days AVERAGE sick days per year off each per employee. Only thing they never cut was their own pensions and still have loads working from home which is another expense the council simply cant afford. I agree whole heartedly with this guy Jason.

Well this is because they are having to pay the money, plus compensation, legal fees, etc, for years of NOT having equal pay in one lump sum.
If they had equal pay from the beginning, then they would not have been taken to court by all the workers who found out they were being underpaid for years. Yes, the pay for council workers should have been lower, for sure, but they messed up by making people do the same job for different wages and hoping nobody found out. Spread out across the decades of unfair wage gaps the money would not have caused sudden bankruptcy.
Plus this is one more debt on top of a whole swathe of losses caused by corruption and mismanagement. Being forced to pay people money the council essentially embezzled was the girder which splattered the pulverised remains of what used to be a camel. If they had done what was morally right from the start then the council would not have been in crippling debt.

The above make up just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to money wastage in a county or city council. So it's about time the public could 'see' for themselves exactly where that money is going while it's in the proposal stage, and could protest if they feel that money does not deserve to go there.

So if the council services become very limited then why should the people pay so much council tax? This needs to get reduced now and if it doesn’t get reduced and the services are indeed limited then we should go on strike and no one should pay the tax

So can we now stop foreign aid and all that and concentrate on getting our own country back on track with all our tax payers money ?

It’s always the top and bottom where the money is spent wrongly, council staff often getting paid lots or not accountable and at the bottom end too many people expecting handouts, the average person is always most badly off!

So, £1+ billion already paid. £760 million still due to be paid. This is due to unfair pay for women. How many women are they employing to amount to this number? Or is it a compensation figure, meaning civil servants, whom by no means are on a bad wage as they are because I've seen council jobs floating around, are getting a compensation from the public? There's just simply no way unfair pay is amounting to £2 billion because they are getting paid, just not equally.
Even if they were paid an average of £100000 less over their service, £2 billion means there have been 20000 employees affected by this, and again, they are paid, just not equally, so I doubt the difference is even £100000 per person affected.
Surely this has to be a compensation figure, and weirdly, the public is compensating the rich, and yes, in relative terms, they are rich, because again council jobs by no means pay a bad wage to start with.

Honestly with the way money is wasted in the UK it doesn’t surprise me that they’re bankrupt. It’s a complete miss management of money.
