Never knew a whole city could declare bankruptcy until today.
Well _Detroit_ beat them to that dubious accolade by some years….
Detroit did the only reason, detroit started getting "Better-ish" it's because they are under a planned economy not only by the state but by the feds too IIRC

Follow the money. Every single person responsible for the management of the money should be transparently investigated.
This should have been done before it's to late now all those who are responsible for this should have their pension contributions and other entitlements suspended with immediate affect and pass legislation immediately their accounts need to be audited and made public any government guilts should be mark to market showing any unrealised losses if their is any and if their is any unrealised profits
That costs money...
@@DarrenSmith-zz6fk, Is it too late to investigate deeply to find if there are crimes and punish the culprit?
A very laudable statement, but we both know that will NEVER happen, the people responsible have already appropriated the funds and sealed themselves off from prosecution. At best that fat bird who was speaking for the council; and her ilk, will end up 'carrying the can'
The problem speaks of more wrong than that...
This plainly presents how flawed our current government is, as a whole.
The fact that those in power can allow one of the predominant cities in the country to go bankrupt, is an absolutely alarming failure of our governing systems.
But we, the people, will likely be content with simply being mildly alarmed and allow it to pass by with just apologies and half-hearted 'reforms'
How can we the public know that there was no corruption involved without a public inquiry? This is outrageous and all involved must be scrutinised and held to account.

@@cheatingREFSandVAR So true.
I know how this works being in the civil service. Call a council of experts to discuss a project, they all get paid millions for showing up. They draw up a budget, 70% of which goes into their bank account. Project ends up using the rest of its bloated funding in unecessary ways to justify receiving it so they will continue to be able to claim that amount for future projects. Suddenly a pothole being fixed costs 20 million
It's not labours fault when they were in charge they had 3 billion for all services required in Birmingham council in 2010 but the Tories have cut the budget to 600 million that's an 80 per cut but people still need there bins collected etc so labour have had to borrow to keep up demand but there's no other choice unless u want to shut down multiple council services
Britain is at breaking point, something drastic has to be done to take the stress off the British people, hard working taxes is being wasted on things not beneficial for British families. Needs major investigations!

I've worked to bid on contracts with various councils around the country. You'd be shocked at both the level of incompetence, but also bungs that take place to secure contracts, even on relatively small contracts that don't exceed £50k. But £100m? Even some light skimming off the top on contracts like that will leave the beneficiaries able to walk away and retire on. The only way to tackle this, is for central government to launch a full investigation which will likely find criminal activity and thus criminal charges brought. These people need bringing to justice and locking up. It'll be a warning to other councils involved in the same. Any council that goes bust must be fully investigated, and no, simply blaming "gov't cuts" doesn't cut it.
Politicians are just as corrupt as these are the country is insolvent the bank of England is also insolvent at this present time we are going to see a debt market meltdown this will result in a credit freeze everyone needs to understand what's really going to happen real money assets are the only things that can't bankrupt and has no counterparty risk bonds stocks which will also fall and fiat currencies will go to 0 we have 1 percent of purchasing power left in the pound
I'm afraid it's the same as in any other country - nobody will face charges and made accountable, as this fraud and incompetence appears on every level of authority. Fatal disease, that can't be seen, but leads society to shambles.

Looks like income is less than expenditure, excessive borrowings, being overcharging/corruption for public services.
The output is off the scale because fat chavvy single mums get given houses and their benefits outweigh our taxes. If Birmingham is fucked then the other councils won’t be far behind either.
WTF?! and where did they waste money from council tax which is more than 200 quid a house on average!
The council tax system is completely corrupt
Bet the mps arnt struggling though
Just done a bit of research..
The media often describes issuing a section 114 notice as ‘bankruptcy’, but in fact, local authorities in the UK cannot go bankrupt. A section 114 notice means the council cannot make new spending commitments and must meet within 21 days to discuss what to do next.
That’s why they are calling it “effectively bankrupt”. Not legally bankrupt but cannot legally commit to new expenditures, and cannot service existing obligations. In layman’s term, broke.
No one noticing the equal pay award there as quite a big expense? People push for what they believe is morally right but that has literally cost Birmingham 760m quid. Madness.
Well this is because they are having to pay the money, plus compensation, legal fees, etc, for years of NOT having equal pay in one lump sum.
If they had equal pay from the beginning, then they would not have been taken to court by all the workers who found out they were being underpaid for years. Yes, the pay for council workers should have been lower, for sure, but they messed up by making people do the same job for different wages and hoping nobody found out. Spread out across the decades of unfair wage gaps the money would not have caused sudden bankruptcy.
Plus this is one more debt on top of a whole swathe of losses caused by corruption and mismanagement. Being forced to pay people money the council essentially embezzled was the girder which splattered the pulverised remains of what used to be a camel. If they had done what was morally right from the start then the council would not have been in crippling debt.
They should have dealt with the problem at the time instead of ignoring it then. An old workmate whose wife was a dinner lady got that much in owed pay they retired and went to live in Malta and apparently she is now owed more. TOTAL INCOMPETENCE and their neighbours in Malta are probably the idiots that were running the council at the time who probably retired 15 years early on a full pension paid for by yours truly the tax payers

About time that all council's every expenditure was laid open for public scrutiny every step of the way.
IT bodge-ups, expenses claims, and the building of 'projects' for extreme costs (when we know full well that often the project doesn't justify the cost, council managers rarely able to grasp what the true cost of a renovation/new build should be).
The above make up just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to money wastage in a county or city council. So it's about time the public could 'see' for themselves exactly where that money is going while it's in the proposal stage, and could protest if they feel that money does not deserve to go there.
Maybe they should go back to hiring staff based on their merits rather than their appearance and sexual preferences.

So, £1+ billion already paid. £760 million still due to be paid. This is due to unfair pay for women. How many women are they employing to amount to this number? Or is it a compensation figure, meaning civil servants, whom by no means are on a bad wage as they are because I've seen council jobs floating around, are getting a compensation from the public? There's just simply no way unfair pay is amounting to £2 billion because they are getting paid, just not equally.
Even if they were paid an average of £100000 less over their service, £2 billion means there have been 20000 employees affected by this, and again, they are paid, just not equally, so I doubt the difference is even £100000 per person affected.
Surely this has to be a compensation figure, and weirdly, the public is compensating the rich, and yes, in relative terms, they are rich, because again council jobs by no means pay a bad wage to start with.
Honestly with the way money is wasted in the UK it doesn’t surprise me that they’re bankrupt. It’s a complete miss management of money.
