  • Welcome back to our thrilling sailing adventure aboard Polaris! In this episode, we set sail from the enchanting Isle of Rona, embarking on a journey filled with exhilarating challenges, captivating landscapes, and a race against time. Join us as we navigate through treacherous currents, chase the looming weather, and immerse ourselves in the stunning beauty of the Isle of Skye.
Leaving the tranquil shores of Rona, we sail down the picturesque Sound of Raasay, venturing into the serene waters of Loch Carron. Our destination is the charming village of Plockton, nestled on the shores of this idyllic loch. As we approach the iconic Skye Bridge, we feel a sense of anticipation and excitement, knowing that the straits of Kyle Rhea lie ahead. With careful planning and an optimal tidal strategy, we conquer the extreme currents of Kyle Rhea effortlessly, manoeuvring through the straits with confidence.
Time becomes a crucial factor as we make our way to Mallaig. Dark clouds loom on the horizon, hinting at the approaching high winds and inclement weather. Our goal is to reach Mallaig before the storm arrives, ensuring the safety of our crew and Polaris.
Will we make it to Mallaig in time? Join us in this chapter of our sailing adventure as we navigate treacherous currents, race against the clock, and marvel at the awe-inspiring landscapes of Skye. Don't forget to leave a comment, share your thoughts, and be a part of our incredible voyage.

    Hi!
We are Kathrin and Daniel sailing, cruising and living aboard our sailing yacht SV Polaris Helvetica, a 14m Bavaria Cruiser 46 from 2017. We left our native Switzerland and moved to the UK almost two decades ago. In 2021, in our mid 50-ies and after our three boys left the nest we made the big decision to leave the rat race in London and to make our beloved sailboat our primary floating residence.
Over the years we added a generator, got rid of the propane gas cooker and replaced it with an electric stove and oven, changed our house battery bank to Lithium (LiFePo, Lithium Iron Phospate), added a 1,200W solar arch and a water maker. With these upgrades Polaris is now a comfortable home allowing us to cruise the coast of the United Kingdom and, most recently, Scoland, in comfort, summer and winter.
Kathrin loves to cook and bake on board, you will see some of her cookery wonders across our episodes, and makes good use of her Thermomix cooker.
We totally fell in love with our new lifestyle although we had to make some tough decisions. We vacated our rental house in London and sold and gave away all our furniture and belongings that had no space on Polaris. It is a very liberating feeling to be able to say that all we own is with us on our small sailing boat. There's nothing else to care about. We enjoy our freedom and exploring new places, discovering their history and we love making new friends along our way.

What a great way to explore the Western Isles. I'm jealous. We'll get to most of the bigger islands eventually but it will be via ferry. I'd much prefer your method of transport. Cheers!

      Hi Craig
Thanks for watching. Yes, we love the way to get around - although it also makes you realise how dependent we are of mother nature. Currently sitting like on the curb of a motorway, trying to find a good moment to run across before the next low pressure rolls in…
Luckily we are well stocked on 🥃. Cheers!
