- Opinel #9 - I made it mine, Modifying my Opinel to be unique. No power tools were harmed in the making of this video.
I own a few opinels and love them, but I want mine to be unique to me. So I modified it. I have no power in the shop so all the mods were done with hand tools.

Your change to the blade & handle are the reason I went with the garden knife. The blade is more of a drop point (which I really like) & the handle curves down at the end.

As a french person, born just just down the french alps, I can tell you that this handle is the more common one in the alps. Much more common than the original Opinel shape :)

Colonial maple is similar to most 0pinel handles! Works for hickory for an aged natural look! premium oil MINWAX WOOD FINISH. Penetrating stain. I go over with boiled linseed oil for a compatible satin look!

Found your video and subscribed, I am new here and from far away . Very nice thing you did there. I modded my opinels several times now, the last one was a no 9 like yours. The blade similar to your one and the handle completely made by myself . Bought a piece of Karelian burl birch and made a handle like a banana in shape and sealed it with linseed oil varnish. At the end I got a hole for a lanyard and now it is like my dream always was. Another one got a handle out of juniper, has this wonderful smell…so I always watch videos about modded opinels to get new ideas. I have a Opinel Le Savoyard no.8 with that shape handle. It is more elegant than the usual Opinel handle--I like it

Well I just did a 9 and the stain is perfect color, just semi transparent, not semi solid like my 4 handles. Fyi it lets the full grain show thru!

I like my Opinel’s. I always give my No. 8’s the handle treatment that you gave yours. I do not like the fishtail digging into my palm. Never touched anything 9 and up as they do not dig into my hand. And never touched the blade on none of mine. I have a No. 12 that needs your treatment I think. A No. 12 carbon Opinel Garden Knife! Greg’s knife, but 2CG inspired!

I like the handle either way but the altered blade shape looks far better than the original.

@@2ndchancegeorge Next to my Buck 110, my Opinel #s 8&9 are my favorite, followed by almost anything with the Rough Ryder name on it. The wood handles on my Opinels have been replaced with stag antlers, but your video reignited my desire to make drop points out of the blades. Might be this weeks project.
It looks like you were inspired by the Opinel garden knife (Opinel sells it only in #8 and steel)

Another step is to seal end grain of handle (Virobloc end) with a few drops of melted candle wax and then heat it with hair dryer until all signs of wax are absorbed into wood. This process seals end grain from water absorption and makes blade pivot point self lubricating and will last longer than oil which may eventually leave a rancid smell.

I've found Opinel knives mostly useless for everything but slicing onions and bologna, and I have one in my camp kit at all times. I do enjoy listening to crusty old dudes bless us with their widom, however.
Thanks for watching...I think this crusty old dude has used opinels for all sorts of things. It's not camp or survival knife, for its a whittler, food prep like you do and fun to modify. Just saying...lol. apppriciate you stopping by
Grind the blade on a 7/8 down to a 2" wharncliffe and they make fantastic wood carving knives, especially for chip carving.
