I just finished mixing up pollen patties using your 5 1/4# recipe. It turned out just right. With 10 hives this gives 1/2# to each one. They are tearing into sugar syrup. It seems to help them draw out new comb. The pattie will help growth. My boxes are full. Feeder rims also are nice to give them full access to the pattie. Hot as blue blazes in Atl but it’s summer, supposed to be hot. Hopefully the Ladies agree with the formula. Thank you
Hi Kamon. I just added pollen patties. Holy Smokes- they hit each one like there was no tomorrow. Between patties + syrup my boxes are full of bees. No wax moths so far. Have multiple SHB traps in each colony. Just finished mite treatment - time to test to see results. Only have 9 hives. This is plenty for a 2nd year beek. Thank you for your videos.
Absolutely! Here in Union County Georgia we are feeding our Michael Palmer's and nucs patties now! They consume it in 3 days tops! Keep up the educational, helpful, APPRECIATED videos! 👊
Lol, you did sound like Porky Pig. Great information Kamon. It's the same way here. I use Ultra Bee pollen substitute and patties, at different times. If there is any pollen whatsoever coming in, my bees will not touch the pollen substitute. They are harvesting pollen from the bahia grass right now, it probably isn't the most nutritious. So I'm feeding pollen patties to supplement and they're eating them. Bottom line, if the bees don't need it, they won't eat it.
How often should a hive be checked? This will hopefully give me an idea as to how many hives I will eventually be able to keep. I watch your channel almost everyday. I’m studying how to become a bee keeper. Keep up the great work. Thank you.
Thanks Raul, It depends. Certain times of the year I might check the hives once a week. (honeyflow/swarm season) in slow times of the year we do a quick inspection every other week just to see if the colony is queen right and laying. We will feed patties once a week but that does not mean we pull out frames.
Kamon. Is it okay to pull honey supers even if the flow is not yet finish? I always see beeks who let their hives go 5 supers. .is it not okay to get them? I hope you understand my question. .still learning here
@@kamonreynolds I used your recipe, but forgot I had used some already to make a small batch. Sho I don't have any more ultra bee. With only 9 hives I had planned on keeping this in the freezer. well, perhaps add sugar then, It won't be as high in protein content but there are patties designed to have less protein and more carb. The problem with our recipe is that it seems to be very water-dependent. I can tell a decent difference in how it turned out from my municipal water and the well water
You have convinced me, finally.😁. Tell me all about your traps for I feel they have to go hand and hand if we are to feed patties? Thanks, Phillip Hall

I think that it's more about how much, rather than, how long. Me personally, I usually check my hives weekly. If I open a hive and see that that the patty is still moist and almost gone, then I probably gave them the right amount. If I open a hive and see that the patty is dry or has some SHB larvae, I give them a smaller piece that they can cover. I hope this helps.

Thomas Kmet ahhhhh didn’t catch that lol. I use a honey and borax mixture that’s really thick so it doesn’t run out of my beetle barns. Works great!!!!

Regarding hive beetle traps and double brood chambers, do you put traps on both boxes or just the upper one?
If I was going to have 2 traps I would have them both in the top. Beetles tend to het herded toward the lid.
@@kamonreynolds -- Perfect. I have two traps on the top box, one at either edge.

That is why I supplement as of last year!
I just finished 12 pollen patties for 3 hives. Plus I'm feeding 2 to 1 sugar water. Hopefully, the 4 patties for each hive makes it to 1st freeze.
Did you put all 12 on at the same time?
@@danskisbees7348 No, one at a time. I freeze the others. Patties don't freeze solid. Patty lasts 1 to 2 weeks in the hive.

Thanks for another great video.
I saw on one video a bee keeper put a stiffer cloth over his pollen patties... does this help?
I made a bucket of pattie gloop, but is too runny. What can I add to thicken it up?
Just add some more ultra bee till it's about the thickness of peanut butter. It will thicken a little more overnight.

Do you buy or make The patties?

My bees prefer the Ultra Bee. I just ordered another 10 pounds. It has a 2 year expiration date.
I buy the Ultra bee powder and mix my own.
Is it necessary to leave the paper on the patties?
Yes, the paper protects the patties from the beetles laying eggs in them, wherever the bees don't cover, the beetles have access.
Did you ever get any synthetic comb?
We don’t have SBO (yet) here in Portland OR, but patties without paper rapidly dry out, get hard; at that point bees won’t eat it, just haul it off.
@@paulchristu996 Yep.

Qtip dipped in food grade lemongrass essential oil.
