You should see the rest areas in places like New Jersey, really nice. It had an entire food court with a sit-down resturaunt. Also, the ones out west are small, but have amazing scenery, often they're used as trailheads to the wilderness. The Bonneville salt flats have really awesome 3 story overlooks that offered some of the most amazing views I've ever seen. Could do without the sulfur smell of the flats, though. Hehehe.
The Donner Pass rest area comes to mind, it's about a 1 mile hike on good marked trails to the valley where they sheltered. Just incredible beauty.

Germany doesnt have as much space as the USA and thus cant afford the sprawling compounds and about 99% of the country has a town rather close by (at worst "over the mountain"). So ... "great views" are really rare. Quite a few of these things date back to the time of "Uncle Adolf", which dictates their size.
Oh and you dont drive on the Autobahn for "good cuisine" ... you wont find it. All you find is big chain food at too high price.
