Bondrewd isn't actively malicious... and that's what makes him so terrifying. He knows exactly what he's doing, but he's so far out of his gourd that the very concepts of good and evil don't even occur to him. He's still human-shaped, but the man's lost his humanity a LONG time ago.
@@torchlight3173 Arguing for what? I pretty much said what we all saw: that Bondrewd is a complete inhuman monster who doesn't even see what he's doing as evil.
@@Mikazuchireborn you're right bondrewd isn't malicious everything he does is rationalized through a scientific consequentialist framework. The sick twisted man who sacrificed everything and everyone he loved just so we could take one step further
@@Mikazuchireborn I didn't see that
I think the interesting thing about Bondrewd is that his actions are despicable and inexcusable, but he's not evil. His perception and understanding of things is screwed and very limited by logic, and it makes him come off as a manipulative evil bastard, and yet when you analyze the character you realize he's not evil and that is far more screwed up. He did that to those kids and Prushka, and yet when he said he loves them he really meant it for real. He doesn't see why doing those things is wrong because he considers that sacrificing oneself for the sake of others is the greatest act of love. He's also surprisingly honest, despite seeming like a manipulative liar. If you pay attention to his wording, at no point did he ever lie. Yes, he misunderstood things and took actions without asking first, but he's not unreasonable. When they asked him if he'd allow them to continue down to the 6th layer and he said yes, he was saying the truth. The problem was not specifying not tinkering with Reg or hurting anyone.
And that's when you realize that if Nanachi and the crew had stated their business _and_ their conditions in detail when they first met him instead of leaving it vague, the entire conflict of this movie would've been avoided.
Annnnnd thats what makes him a very interesting character.
@@torchlight3173 The fact that Bondrewd isn't as simple and shallow as "he's an evil bastard" and how funny it is that the majority of the movie could've been avoided by talking?
Granted, going to L6 that easily would've bit them in the ass later, but it's still funny.
@@torchlight3173 That's a very superficial way to look at things, it makes you miss a lot of details, and MiA is riddled with details hidden in dialogues and stuff like that. Most of the time little comments or text that go largely ignored become relevant later on.
Looking at things on that level would mean Ozen is just a cranky antagonistic bitch and nothing more, but those extra details show that she's so far the only WW known solely for heroic actions and helping others despite her personality (in contrast to Lyza being known mostly for being a somewhat dishonest drunkard and murdering a dozen people with a pickaxe). Yet on a surface level they're both presented in opposite light due to their personalities.
Though on the bright side I guess that kind of "shallow" view (I don't mean that in an offensive way, just can't think of a better wording) does give those moments a stronger impact or surprise factor when they come full circle?
The funny thing is, Bondrewd is Riko's kindred spirit. He is the ultimate optimist, he sees the good in everything and everyone. And only the good. He is not selfish at all, to him all things including himself only exist to unravel the secrets of the Abyss. He used himself as the guinea pig until he no longer qualified as a human being, then he switched to other people.
"May your journey overflow with both curses and blessings." My favorite quote that perfectly encapsulates everything that's happened and everything that will happen.
What I love about it, is that blessings and curses are both bad in the abyss. Both result in someone dying.
I just think that what makes Bondrewd such an amazing villain is the fact that he is genuinely an amoral person YET he doesn't do anythingfor the sake of being "evil". He lost his humanity long time ago, yet he didn't lost the knowledge of feelings. For such a creature that only lives for the sake of knowledge and results to understand the human heart and giving real and genuine love back and at the same time separate those feelings is crazy and messed up. But that's how it is.
Like, despite being "defeated" he isn't mad, he isn't disappointed, he never lost his cool and was always patiently paying attention to how everything evolved and developed. That's why he can just congratulate Nanachi with no remorse, and his words for her may sound like bs, but he was genuinely proud of how she tuned out to be and how she dealt with him.
He is a good villain cuz from the beginning to the end he never changed his views, if anything, everything happened just like how expected. For Riko and Co. this was probably such a traumatic and cruel experience, but for Bondrewd this was just another day of his "lifespan" and he will keep his experiment in order to understand the curse and how to take advantage of what the Abyss offers.
The inhuman being that knew how to spread genuine love not because of love, but because of knowledge. He loved many and sacrificed many, and is nasty and unfair but his theory is true, he did raise all those kids like his real children, they loved him as a father, and he killed them like nothing.
Is a good Villain cuz at the end it feels like he wasn't stopped, he didn't lose a lot. He will keep being Bondrewd, and that's what stings, and that's what makes him such a great villain. They didn't defeat him, they merely survived him.
Bondrewd was a completely amoral scientist. Yes, the means to an end were evil and not justified, but he was no longer human. He was doing what needed to be done to get results. And to some degree, he still had a heart. He had to to understand how a white whistle was made and to try and make more than one. He knew he had to treat the kids as a father and what that meant. It's required for the "blessing" to become a white whistle. It's gross and awful, but that is what the Abyss requires.
Basically he is cruel bastard, but only because his desire to study and explore the abyss requires that kind of cruelty
@@torchlight3173 I'm not arguing anything. I'm stating why Bondrewd thought and acted like he did.
@@norvelled Pfft, Torchlight31 spammed the exact same comment at me too. Nice to see he deleted them all and ran.
Oh yeah, the birth of the Sovereign of Children. What a great name, honestly.
About Bondrewd, he isnt really "evil" by definition. He is just WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY too far fu***ing gone. He did loved Prushka... is just that, after experimenting with other people trying to attain the "blessing" Nanachi got, he realized that he needed the same nature of love that would give birth to a white whistke stone.
Who was the closest candidate? Yeah, Prushka just got... a really fucked up dad that would not even question if perhaps extirpating most of the organs of your child and putting her into a juice box while still retaining her conscience was wrong, he just did it because it was a "logical conclusion".
TLDR: Bondrewd is a psycho
ya, he's a "keep him in a closed room, solitary, literally forever, no matter what" grade psychopath
Funny thing is Bondrewd genuinely loves Prushka as his daughter, like 100% parental affection. For a cartridge to work the love must be felt both ways which is why Bondrewd has real feelings and connections with the kids he killed. Bondrewd has no malice whatsoever and merely pursues scientific research at any cost. He has no ulterior motives and simply wants to understand the Abyss which is why he genuinely wants Riko to succeed in her quest, and will more than likely help her later down the line.
I actually think, that bondrewd intentionally helped riko the same way as Ozen did. Ozen made clear to Riko that the monsters of the Abyss are absolutly terrifying and merciless, so she was beating them into shape for the journey. Bondrewd was kinda doing the same thing, by creating the white whistle for riko so she can go further because it might be she's infront of a obstacle she needs a white whistle for (like the last dive device)
I dont think that was really his intention, I think he was just out to unravel their mysteries. BUT after he "consumes prushka" she basically conveys to him with her soul to make peace with rikos crew and from that point forward I believe is when it becomes his aspiration change to truly help them.
@@nullakjg767 Bondrewd said at the beginning only a white whistle can use the elevator and he also needed the love of Prushka to continue his experiments. As how intelligent he is I bet at that moment he knew he can get her love as a daughter and a white whistle for Riko. That would also explain why he wanted Prushka to befriend Riko.
@@Neclony Yeah, true. If he for some reason intended to get a second white whistle for himself, he would intentionally keep Prushka in the dark, so she wouldnt feel no sympathy for them in the upcoming fight...
Best part of the movie is that *Bondrewd got away with everything*
Well, he did lose his Blessed body.
@@GoodwillWright Nothing stops him from trying to get it again though, specially now that he knows for sure it works.
Bro is about to make a Prushka V2
Bondrewd truely loved all "his" children which is what makes him scary. Love was required for him to recieve the blessing, like nanachi did. If he did not love Prushka, it would not have worked, and Prushka had to love him. Love was just something that he used to understand the abyss and harness it.
The Twisted love and philosophy of bondrewd is brutal, a man who cares naught for the moral consequences and suffering caused by his actions. In his mind scientific progress is an imperative. Bondrewd sacrificed everything and everyonehe ever loved to take one step deeper into the abyss, but in the end he never made it to the 6th lair
First of all, congratulations Suzy and Steejo, now engaged and happy!
What an amazing journey Suzy, thank you for all the laughing, smiling and crying, it's so comforting to watch series with you. Love you Suzy!
In fact Bondrewd cared deeply about the children. He even remembered every single name of them.
And the very point of cartridges is that they can repel the curse through a bond of love.
Which makes the char quite awesome in depicting his extremism. He sacrificed everything he loved to the abyss. Even though he can be considered a monster or evil, I disagree about him being selfish. He didnt do it for simple gain for himself, but an actual cause.
Yeah, the cause was still for himself tho lol. Selfish af my man.
@@kenethernandez6246 Not really. He is as selfish as Riko in his pursuit to discover the Abyss. He didnt sacrifice anyone or anything for himself, but only for the purpose of knowledge (which he btw shared relatively freely with other cave raiders).
In fact his discoveries probably saved hundreds of other cave raiders.
In his way he was pretty much the same as Riko. She acknowledged it even herself.
@@kolliwanne964 Nope. He is the PRIMARY BENEFACTOR of all his "discoveries" so he's definitely selfish. You think he's doing this so he can pass ALL his knowledge to the entire world so that everyone can roam the abyss together like a big happy family? Nope. He's doing this for himself first and then for the benefit of a select few after him.
@@kolliwanne964 And there is a HUGE difference between Riko and that asshole. Riko ASKED both Nanachi and Reg to acconpany her down to the abyss and they came WILLINGLY. She is not forcing people to do things that they CLEARLY don't want to do or sacrificing a million kids so she can reach the bottom safely. In fact, Riko said that she doesn't even expect a long life in the Abyss. Bondrewd on the other hand is a completely different story. He was literally talking about his "preparation for the next 2000 years" being completed. He wants to roam that abyss forever if he can do it and he's clearly using other people to accomplish that.
@@kenethernandez6246 You do realize that he literally sacrificed his entire body and humanity to this? He could have just used a child or anybody else for this as well (cartridges show that he is 100% capable of love and being loved), but he went above and beyond first to find another way. And yes, even with other bodies of the umbra hands it was clear that this would take a huge toll on his mind.
Isn't it ironic that Bondrewd is working so hard to find a way to stave off the curse from layer six to five, i.e. loss of humanity despite the fact that he himself has no humanity left to lose?
Shou Tucker and Bondrewd are the best dads!
God I love this meme :D There are so many good dark jokes
Having read manga Season 2 is going to be crazy. Maybe controversial as well. Not sure how they are gonna show everything on TV. They might have to censor some stuff.
having not read the manga and therefore knowing nothing more about what’s to come than this comment: CONCERN lolol
As an Anime-Only, should I read the Manga or wait a few weeks for Season 2?
@@DXDragon38 I'm sure this kind of question always gets a "omg yes read the manga, the show leaves out so much!" but I'm just gonna wait patiently haha
@@DXDragon38 I think you should wait.
Some?!
Bondrewd isn’t malevolent, he’s just amoral. He’s for progress at any cost
@@torchlight3173 not necessarily, he just sees the benefit outweighing the cons. Malevolent means evil, he’s not doing these things because he’s evil, he’s doing them because he seeks progress
@@torchlight3173 I don’t disagree that his actions are evil and everything he does is awful, I’m just saying he’s not motivated by evil. Just he’s so disconnected from reality and humanity that he doesn’t even have an idea of morals anymore, only progress.
However if you say people are innately evil and must work against it, then I would agree that bondrewd is then by default evil
@@torchlight3173 if bondrewd were real I would agree, but he’s quite literally no longer a human. It’s explained that his consciousness has been pulled apart and put back together and split among different bodies so many times that all he is now is a messy combination of his deepest desires.
It is a popular opinion that bondrewd does horrible things, buts it’s also a popular opinion that he didn’t do those things because he’s evil. Yes there are edgy people arguing bondrewd did nothing wrong but that’s not what I’m saying. I’m just saying he’s not doing these things for the sake of being cruel, just that he doesn’t care how cruel he is as a means to an end
@@torchlight3173 You're the one who doesn't get it. Made in Abyss is a horror story in the Lovecraftian tradition, where right and wrong don't apply just as beauty and horror become intermingled. The particularity of Lovecraftian horror is the theme of depersonalization where humans lose their sense of self to become part of something bigger, both beautiful and terrifying that symbolizes the light and darkness of the Universe's forces. In these stories, the deeper you dwelve into those forces, the less human morality has any significance as humans are seen as important as ants in comparison to the greater whole. In this setting, anything that makes mankind (civilization, ethics, morality, technology) is seen as a lie in a Universe of only chaos and darkness. It is as if Nature was a willing vengeful force whose only aim was to destroy any of sense of humanity and make mankind return to a primitive state, to take back its children from the lies of modernity. In Lovecraft's case, what symbolized the most such a primitive force was Cthulhu, in Made in Abyss it is the Abyss. The Abyss is a savage place full of curses and wonders that turn people into monsters and animals so that they can be cut off from civilization and never return to the surface, and merge with the primitive nature of the Abyss (it is even said that if they die in the Abyss, they get reincarnated into something else in it). So your moral absolutists standards cannot apply to this story. If you want to blame someone, blame the Abyss.
Also it is probably telling that you have a Guts avatar. Of course you would never accept such a story.
@@johngoceljak6002 Also, you know that Bondrewd isn't evil because if there were any other way to achieve the same results with less sacrifice, he would absolutely do it. If he could stave off the curse by hopping on one leg, tapping his head and rubbing his belly, he would do that.
He is the best Daddy ever. (:
I feel Nanachi is a ticking time bomb, I think any time when she has a chance to sacrifice herself she will take it (she already tried at least two times in this movie)
Most people misunderstood that kids were mere victim who was turned into a cartridge, but the cartridge only activate its effect when the user and the subject loved each other,.
which means, those subjects of the cartridges are still willing with and for Bondrewd.
just wanna say congratulations on steejo's proposal your gonna be a fantastic wife 👰♂🥂💍🥳👍
that connection and love from bondrewd is genuine. i know it might sound absurd but bondrewd love prushka like his own kid because that love/connection is a ingredient to make cartride like gasoline to negate the curse if the 6th layer . btw bondrewd knew this procedure from nanachi and mitty because they have connection and nanachi kinda negate the curse and stay somewhat human.
What's crazy to me is that without this whole shebang, they wouldn't have a white whistle. In a way, Bondrewed did the messed up stuff for them so they could keep their hands clean.
All this really makes me wonder who Lyza's white whistle is
"BEST DAD EVER!"
TRIGGERED
He gave her a good life before chopping her up. Like those nice bio pig farmers.😊
Awesome video! The abyss causes some people to go insane the deeper you go and the longer your down in it and he has also spread his consciousness really thin due to switching bodies with that relic he uses but still I hate him and I’m glad they kicked his butt! Also the cartridges are like curse repellent they force the curse onto the cartridge instead of the person traveling back up due to the ascending and that is why he tries to build a bond with the kids before hand sick but that’s how they work.
4:39 Ever wondered how nanachi knew surgery and medicine to save Riko? 🤔
My question is... how did the 'current' white whistle ranked Cave Raiders obtain their white whistles?
Bondrewd is irredeemable. No other word describes him more than that
And finally...
Purshka join Riko, Reg and Nanchi together just like she wanted. 🙂
Ozen scared me with how cold she was with her "tough love". And then she warned them about Bondrewd. I've seen many villains in movies and anime, but Bondrewd is in a league of his own. He remembers the names and dreams of all of his victims and I don't even know if that makes him more or less monstrous than any serial killer. Stuff of nightmares.
This movie is definitely not for the faint of heart since it has many grizzly concepts and scenes. But dawn of the deep soul is a Hidden Gem and one of my favourite movies of all time
bondrewd is nothing but a monster. people keep tryin to portray him as some kinda dark savior but the fact of the matter is the end NEVER justifies the means and his choice of actions prove he's just a horrible person who needs to be stopped.
his alleged goal is to find a way to negate the effect of the lower levels of the abyss which IS a good goal but his methods are inexcusable and even if they were necessary, which they werent, there was far more humane ways to achieve the same results but he actively chose the cruelest methods possible and EVEN THEN he also mostly just performs the same 'experiments' over and over and over with lil to no change in the methods which isnt scientific at all if anything it just makes him out to be a sadist who gets off on the suffering of innocents.
yes in research tests are often repeated but not to an absurd degree and when results are determined the test is changed accordingly and the fact of the matter is thats not what he did, hes no scientist or savior hes just a monster pretending to be noble and anyone who defends him is in desperate need of mental help cause bein ale to delude yourself that hard is very dangerous to yourself and others
his last expiriment was a succes because he could make a body just like nanachies with the power of love...
So the whole reason I think reg lost his memories in the first place was that when he saved riko in the first episode he fired the last shot.
Then we cut to him waking up when the kids tried the electric chair at a low setting, so like a very small battery charge he was like, oh it works for a second now I'm going back to sleep
So in the base he sucked up alot more power which caused him to cross that threshold and go into a berserk state
I like to think that he had his memories but lost them when Riko electrocuted him. Scrambled his brain or something.
You could read the manga before season 2 comes out. Only up to the last decent of course. A lot to discover there.😁
Fun fact nanachi's gender is actually not mentioned nor confirmed. When asked the creator with held info on nanachi's gender.
....one thing I liked about the dubbed version of the movie* is that the ost volume seems to be "fixed"(?)......., in the original the ost's was somewhat lower than everything else..........at least where I watched....
🤔
the "what could have been" is with the sadest thing in this show... when u start to think like that :3
Great reaction! This movie is so good! The emotions hit so hard and the twists come seemingly out of nowhere!
There was a long gap between season 1 and 2 because the author of the manga is so slow. He's been writing the story for 10 years and has only written 62 chapters. The story has only just left layer 6 that's why we're getting a new season now
Amazing movie! Bondrewd is one of my favorite villains.
that "evil" guy sounds like madara
Best dad did nothing wrong
Why is Bondrewd is still alive? This *uckin guy is pure evil. Using human children as experiments is down right despicable ! I mean look what he did to Mitty (deforming her body, giving her the curse while ascending from the 6th layer) and Prushka (dismembering her and using her flesh as package power cartridges ) Did you see all those children in the pit just discarded like that. I want this guy to get his comeuppance already. This anime is hard to watch a second time. I just hope season 2 won't show children suffering anymore but i doubt it.
I used to react like you to this story. But the thing you gotta understand is that it is a horror story in the Lovecraftian tradition, where right and wrong become intermingled, along with horror and beauty.
Unfortunately Bondrewd is necessary in the universe of MiA, because he seems to be one of the few who know how to create a white whistle. And to descend this layer, people need one. If you didn't understand, the power of a white whistle only works if the people sacrificed died willingly. It means in this story Prushka wanted to become a white whistle to help Riko and the team descend the layer. So Bondrewd only dismembered her because she wanted to. That doesn't excuse what he did with the other children, but it seems all those horrific experiences is what makes him such an important character in the abyss, because of the important knowledge he gained. I think the quote "He who fights with monsters should be careful lest he thereby become a monster. And if thou gaze long into an abyss, the abyss will also gaze into thee" has to be taken literally here.
I see you have a Superman avatar so you probably obviously care about right and wrong, but realize that the Abyss is an already horrific place, so I don't think moral absolutist standards can apply to it.
@@tomsawyers6496 I understand what you're saying about Bondrewd being a necessary evil in this story. However I hope there will be a shift in the second season that will show what he's doing can be changed and show he has some sort of moral compass. Did Prushka really die willingly? Or was she coerced and brainwashed. Yes, there is beauty and horror in this anime which keeps us intrigued and wanting to watch more.
@@malcrew0980 Nah, Bondrewd doesn't have a moral compass and his goals and desires haven't really changed. In saying that, his methods may change now knowing the existence of an aubade who can also traverse The Abyss without ill effects.
Bondrewd didn't do everything he did because he enjoys suffering and torture. He did it because at the time, it was the only lead he had to explore The Abyss more and to prevent the 2000 year cycle. He may now refocus his efforts into exploring the origins of an aubade unit so that he may be able to create a similar body. Also, Bondrewd was focused on making himself immune to the curse because he could only rely on himself to explore The Abyss. But now with Nanachi going further down than he did, he can support her and watch their discoveries through her eye.
Season 2 is coming next month 🔥🔥🔥
Season 2 is out DONT FORGETTTTTTTTTTTTTT!!!
Suzy Lu, I just recently started watching your videos.
Currently on your Dress Up Darling reactions and God Of War gameplays.
Just need to say I am loving your personality.
Why do you keep saying nanakey tho? XD that's not their name, riko and regu don't call them nanakey do they? :)
To those who didn't get it : it was Prushka's wish to become a white whistle. She wanted to follow Riko and her friends on their adventure because she wanted to have friends and discover the rest of the world with them. But to be able to descend the next layer of water, Riko & cie needed a white whistle. And a white whistle can only be made from a willing sacrifice, someone willing to lose their humanity and be turned into an object. But somehow Prushka's consciousness is still inside the whistle. In this case, Bondrewd only did what she wanted.
I'm not saying Bondrewd is a savior. He's a twisted scientist who lost all trace of humanity inside of him. But in this case he kinda did nothing wrong. And if he died, I seriously have no idea how people would be able to create white whistles and descend this layer again.
omg. this is the best reaction ive seen.. Ever
......they didn't even tried to get Nanachi eng va to scream stop during the giant shot......
😕
bondrewd is best villian in anime
16:15
Well about that, though the methods are extreme he's doing it for the bigger picture. For some, he already is a savior.
Though at the end of the movie he acknowledges the trio to delve into better territories and methods regarding the Abyss than he partook in.
Bondrewd does care. He's just amoral, and despite a scientist, maybe a bit too short-sighted even if knowledgable.
Also, if it weren't for him, Nanachi would've died long ago, as would many, MANY cave raiders weren't it for his discoveries, and his ambitions are much beyond that reason.
But overall, Bondrewd does something not many villains or antagonists tend to do. The way he's written makes it so that discussions about him are varied and very up to people's views on morals, as is yet again evident in this very here comment section. He's such a great character in that regard and nobody can possibly sway me on that.
Papa just made some lunch box
If you can only understand Bondrewd as a conventional villain, that is unfortunate.
The trailer for season 2 show nothing that could spoil you. They show only the new characters and some flavour text.
Yeah, Bondrewd is more of that one person who ones hates because of his job
A job that no one would like to take because how "wrong" it can be from someone's view and morals
Like when scientists needs some person to test with because of an ill or something
What about black clover & spy x family

Bondrewd has a lot of stupid supporters lol. I can't get some people. The most I can say about the guy is that he's a very well written character but that's it. His actions are disgusting and completely awful. He's about as evil as anyone can be. All the stuff he does is ultimately for his own gain in the end and nobody can say otherwise.
Did you read the manga or are you anime only cuz in the manga Bondrewd’s actions explicitly explained as for the greater good. Bondrewd’s experiments discovered something so important about the abyss. Yes it’s disgusting and morbid but our world and their world is different and thus have different values. In Made in Abyss world orphans and the poor regarded as extras. Even then Bondrewd never actually kidnaps the children. He asks if they want to come with him rather than starve there. He looks for the kids and provide them with clothing and food until the experiments. Even Nanachi confirms this. In the movie it was cut off but when after Bondrewd died for second time. Nanachi said “If I haven’t believed in your honeyed words... I would be dead at that place.
One thing to realize is that Bondrewd is not an exception in Made in Abyss, he's just an extreme. Just about everyone is screwed in the head (by our standards) in one way or another. Ironically, the closest character to human by our standards is Reg. Riko is driven and even tunnel visioned to an extent. They didn't fight Bondrewd because they wanted to stop his experiments. They fought him because he was an obstacle.
Yeah, like he is amoral and all his actions are extremely disgusting and disturbing by our moral perspective. But are we going to lose our humanity as well just to try and 'understand' him and somehow make sense of him? This is just an extreme level of grooming and manipulation in that sense, the man took care of those kids only for scientific purposes. Like all people were saying he lost his humanity a long time ago, so are we going to pretend he did all of this out of love to those children? Lol What kind of empathic fckery is that. So, personally, nope. I have no reason to feel for or make any sense of Bondrewd's character apart from he is justa well written villain. Lol
@@deepdawn1284 Manipulating children to sacrifice them for your own benefit is pretty evil.
