Linda Ronstadt's "Desperado" got more air play than the Eagles' version, and Don Henley credited her with making it popular. Don Henley and Glenn Frey were members of her backup band before forming the Eagles. Her version came out in 1973 as the B-side to her single Colorado. Then on her album Don't Cry Now.
It was an album cut. The Eagles record company did not release it as a single. It was Linda who got it radio air play first. So she did make it popular.
Saw her in Atlanta twice. First at The Great Southeast Music Hall in Sept of ‘73. First time I ever heard her sing this. I had the Eagles’ album, but her Don’t Cry Now album, where she sang this, had not yet been released. I was 20 feet away. Blew me away! Still does!

I completely forgot how amazing her version was, thank you for this Lauren! A little history if it hasn't already been stated. Founding members of the Eagles, Glenn Frey (guitars, vocals), Don Henley (drums, vocals), Bernie Leadon (guitars, vocals), and Randy Meisner (bass guitar, vocals) were recruited by Linda Ronstadt as band members. Some went on to tour with her, and all played on Linda’s third solo studio album, before venturing out on their own to create the Eagles. For a pure vocal reaction, may I suggest the Eagles, "Seven Bridges Road". Loved the reaction, keep doing what you do!

I will tell you a story. Last October, I drove to Philadelphia from DC to hear the Linda Ronstadt Experience, the greatest tribute band I have ever heard. You owe it to yourself to hear them-Tristan McIntosh, the lead, as a 15 year old, finished 5th on American Idol. Ten years later, she is the complete package. But that is not the topic of the story. The next day, we had lunch with two UPenn women and told them of our night. They were 22 and 24 years old and both responded that they had NEVER heard of Linda Ronstadt! We then realized that this generation's music fans have forgotten, or never learned the history of contemporary music. I saw of another "reactor" such as yourself, who was admittedly unfamiliar with The Rolling Stones! In another generation, the greatest musical artists of the 50's, 60s, 70s,(and later) will be forgotten or just a footnote in history. Add to this, that many of these artists were instrumental/foundational to the social changes of the 20th century: think Bob Dylan and human rights, Peter, Paul and Mary and civil rights, Quincy Jones and Bob Geldorf fighting world hunger, Little Stevie van Zandt almost single handedly, ending apartheid in South Africa. Courses, from high school on up, should be given as part of our collective histories. The ties between rock and roll and politics are long and deep. Did I ramble on? Probably. Ronstadt was, perhaps the greatest contemporary voice of the 70s and 80s. How can we let her fade away?

I was looking out the car door window and listening to her perfect, heartbreakingly beautiful voice (and those gorgeous strings) and tears started welling in my eyes. My eyes kept getting bigger as I tried to keep the tears from spilling onto my cheeks, praying that my mom wouldn't turn around to talk to me and I would have to explain to her why I was crying over a song! I surreptitiously wiped my cheeks and became a die hard Linda Ronstadt fan at that very moment!
Linda and Karen are my 2 angelic vocal heroes. On the r rock side, add Annie Wilson and you have a trifecta of greatness. There are a few others that move me greatly (Roberta Flack, Marilyn McCoo and Gladys Knight). Had to get their names in, too.

Most singers who covered it were nice but Linda focused on that word "Harsh" and brought the pain. As a voice teacher, I was wondering if you have heard Gabriel Henrique of Brazil. He was on AGT season before last and stunned everyone. In fact, at the end of one clip of her performing a song in a recording studio at the end of it you could see her looking for acceptance from the people around her like she feels she might have done better.
I've seen Linda live a number of times. This is her encore song. She leaves the stage and when she comes back she sings this song with only a piano player. So Wonderful, but then you knew the evening was over, SAD!

And you said you have never heard this version of Desperado, which is likely because it is not available for purchase, and it is a bootleg from a concert. As you mentioned I think you will find if you listen to the original 1973 recording she did is that this version is so far superior, showing how she practiced and mastered the song, improving upon it constantly. When you strip this song down to its bare bones she is pretty exposed as a singer and in this song you can see pretty much her full repertoire that she has in her tool box so to speak. Always enjoy pieces where the singer is pretty much hanging out in the wind like Lara Fabian,Bobby Hatfield,etc etc etc.

Her music would transcend different genres. Some of her songs charted on both country and pop charts at the same time. She would also have a hit in the Latin Genre as well, and at the same time.
Interesting that you started by talking about living in a white box and that you run a totally online vocal studio. Maybe you relate a bit to the Desperado she's singing about? No worries... I think most if not all people are a Desperado at some level of their life, which is why this song elicits such an emotional reaction.
I spent 6 years of my childhood in Europe, and 4 of those in Vienna, Austria, the city of music. So, while growing up with Linda, and other vocalists (male & female), classical music (orchestral as well) was always my preference. But when Linda came along, it opened up my musical interests into vocalists, and my love for her only grew. But at the same time, I spent a lot of time listening to what I call the great male vocalists, of which there are so many. While I would place Frank Sinatra a hair above the rest, it is not such a rigid and distinct difference, There are so many great male vocalists, all with a very different offering, and hence, an appreciation easy to adjust. But to me, Linda stands all alone at the top of female vocalists, including those of today. I own nearly all of her albums (all on CD) and whenever I play her on my near state of the art system, I either get goose bumps or cry. I look at Linda in comparison to all other female vocalists, like I look at Mozart compared to all other composers, where he stand quite alone at the top, just as Linda does. Since you are into vocal and vocalists, I suggest you listen to a lot more of Linda, especially her albums with Nelson Riddle, which are not rock songs, but basically just her singing. One of my favorite of these albums is 'What's New'. I suggest that you listen to that song from that album - What's New! Or any of the many others. She also did operetta, and she was perfect - Pirates of Penzance. You will be amazed again! I loved that you were crying. I was too! I signed up with you since you really seem to see and FEEL what is so good.
I always liked her version better. In the Henley or Eagles version it's like a male friend advising a friend, but in her version it's like a woman who is in love with the Desperado saying, "forget about the one you can't have, look at me, I'm right here." In the closing notes you can hear the desperation. In any case it is one of the best songs ever written and I'm a big fan of song writers like Bob Dylan, Robbie Roberson, Shania Twain, Joni Mitchell, Sam Cook and so forth. A man ain't supposed to cry but it did it to me for the thousandth time. I was that Desperado she's singing about. Linda never did a bad or even average performance as far as I know. Some were only very good but most are excellent. The only song she couldn't sing to her perfection was Begin the Beguine. She said she didn't have the chest cavity to do it. I don't know about this because with Cantas Por Me Padre she holds some notes for a long time. With Begin the Beguine you had to go high and low very quickly and the only one who could do it was Tony Martin. Even Frank Sinatra couldn't without cheating a little. Linda never cheats.
In the SUMMER OF 1977 I followed LINDA RONSTADT to 5 NEW ENGLAND STATES in 5 states to see 6 show With friends by myself who made new friends that's summer.
You see it’s been way too long and you forgot about her. I was lucky enough to see her live many times and usually it was the final song of the encore and then we all went home. Happy.
It actually goes farther and deeper than that, they were part of her touring band, which is slightly different than her backup band, her and her boyfriend at the time JD Souther actually help them to assemble the musicians to start Eagles. All of the soon-to-be Eagles were friends of JD souther, and helped with Linda Ronstadt through the years. All part of the Troubadour crowd, But you pretty much had the gist of it.
I always shed a tear at that part! I wasn't a fan of her back in the 70's, due to her style of music, and my masculinity of music type (Led Zepp, Deep Purple, Pink Floyd, Allman Brothers).
You know she was Queen of the79s. 5 albums in a row that went platinum or multiplatinum. More records sold than any other woman. 1st woman to do arena rock. You really should use her more in your classes and not let years go between uses of her songs.
This is the best version to look at to see Linda's courage. It is way better than the one on her album. It is her best ballad AND her best rendition of it. I am not talking about dragon slaying courage but rather the faith that what she is going to do with her voice will work. She sings really softly but her voice doesn't fade away at all. At the end she really powerfully finishes and knows it will not crack. Experience and courage. Not many would try this. Most would go for an 8 or 9 but Linda hits a 10 every time. She goes for it and we are lucky to see the results. She studied people like Lola Beltran, Maria Calis, Ella Fitzgerald and Billy Holliday. She would call them the greats and they were. BUT one thing she did they never did. She sang many genres very well.
Yer musical knowledge i believe is limited. You stuck in a well_beaten path. Try a bit farther. Beyond those woods there's gold there. Yer way far behind from yer peers in this trade. Check Rob Squad Reactions. They covered all genre of music from the 50s to 90s. And thats made them successful and great.

As you mentioned I think you will find if you listen to the original 1973 recording she did is that this version is so far superior, showing how she practiced and mastered the song, improving upon it constantly. She changed the instrumentation by adding a piano solo with - again - the master jazz pianist, Don Grolnick. Thanks again for your commentary on what is one of my favorite renditions of any song. Don had asked Linda to sing this, and later admitted the song was not a hit until she sang it !
Her music would transcend different genres. Some of her songs charted on both country and pop charts at the same time. She would also have a hit in the Latin Genre as well, and at the same time.
Interesting that you started by talking about living in a white box and that you run a totally online vocal studio. Maybe you relate a bit to the Desperado she's singing about? No worries... I think most if not all people are a Desperado at some level of their life, which is why this song elicits such an emotional reaction.
I spent 6 years of my childhood in Europe, and 4 of those in Vienna, Austria, the city of music. So, while growing up with Linda, and other vocalists (male & female), classical music (orchestral as well) was always my preference. But when Linda came along, it opened up my musical interests into vocalists, and my love for her only grew. But at the same time, I spent a lot of time listening to what I call the great male vocalists, of which there are so many. While I would place Frank Sinatra a hair above the rest, it is not such a rigid and distinct difference, There are so many great male vocalists, all with a very different offering, and hence, an appreciation easy to adjust. But to me, Linda stands all alone at the top of female vocalists, including those of today. I own nearly all of her albums (all on CD) and whenever I play her on my near state of the art system, I either get goose bumps or cry. I look at Linda in comparison to all other female vocalists, like I look at Mozart compared to all other composers, where he stand quite alone at the top, just as Linda does.
Since you are into vocal and vocalists, I suggest you listen to a lot more of Linda, especially her albums with Nelson Riddle, which are not rock songs, but basically just her singing. One of my favorite of these albums is 'What's New'. I suggest that you listen to that song from that album - What's New! Or any of the many others. She also did operetta, and she was perfect - Pirates of Penzance. You will be amazed again!

I always liked her version better.
In the Henley or Eagles version it's like a male friend advising a friend, but in her version
it's like a woman who is in love with the Desperado saying, "forget about the one you can't
have, look at me, I'm right here."
In the closing notes you can hear the desperation.
In any case it is one of the best songs ever written and I'm a big fan of song writers like
Bob Dylan, Robbie Roberson, Shania Twain, Joni Mitchell, Sam Cook and so forth.

Linda never did a bad or even average performance as far as I know. Some were only
very good but most are excellent. The only song she couldn't sing to her perfection
was Begin the Beguine. She said she didn't have the chest cavity to do it.
I don't know about this because with Cantas Por Me Padre she holds some notes
for a long time. With Begin the Beguine you had to go high and low very quickly
and the only one who could do it was Tony Martin. Even Frank Sinatra couldn't
without cheating a little. Linda never cheats.

Linda told Glen and Don who were part of her backup musicians to form their own band. So they formed the Eagles
It actually goes farther and deeper than that, they were part of her touring band, which is slightly different than her backup band, her and her boyfriend at the time JD Souther actually help them to assemble the musicians to start Eagles. All of the soon-to-be Eagles were friends of JD souther, and helped with Linda Ronstadt through the years. All part of the Troubadour crowd, But you pretty much had the gist of it.

You know she was Queen of the79s. 5 albums in a row that went platinum or multiplatinum. More records sold than any other woman. 1st woman to do arena rock. You really should use her more in your classes and not let years go between uses of her songs.

This is the best version to look at to see Linda's courage. It is way better than the one on her album. It is her best ballad AND her best rendition of it. I am not talking about dragon slaying courage but rather the faith that what she is going to do with her voice will work. She sings really softly but her voice doesn't fade away at all. At the end she really powerfully finishes and knows it will not crack. Experience and courage. Not many would try this. Most would go for an 8 or 9 but Linda hits a 10 every time. She goes for it and we are lucky to see the results. She studied people like Lola Beltran, Maria Calis, Ella Fitzgerald and Billy Holliday. She would call them the greats and they were. BUT one thing she did they never did. She sang many genres very well.
