Sharp culet, smooth solution: Resizing an emerald ring
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 9 фев 2025
- Helen’s 55th anniversary emerald and diamond ring was a stunning symbol of love-but a loose fit and a sharp culet made it tricky to wear. I resized the ring to fit her perfectly and added a contoured connecting bar to stop the culet from scratching her finger. Using my laser welder to avoid damaging the emeralds, I ensured the repair was seamless and precise. Now it’s more comfortable than ever, ready to celebrate both her milestone and her incredible journey.

I really enjoy hearing the practical ways you handle different stones and metals. I never would have thought about a stone being sensitive to heat.
Diamonds are the most heat resilient stones but sapphires and rubies can also handle moderate heat without getting damaged.
Water not so much @@mars7612
Emeralds are also easy to break. They have reasonably high hardness, but not much toughness. That’s why we made the emerald cut.
@@MassoyanJewelers Rubies and sapphires are the same stone, they just have different mineral content which creates the different colors. That's why they're similar in resiliency.
@@MassoyanJewelersas a glass blower who has encased each of those in a borosilicate project, i can attest they hold up to well over 1000° pretty well
I've never seen the technique of putting a band under the center stone before but it makes so much sense that you have to wonder why it's not standard practice...
Yeah, I was thinking to myself who had designed it so that it pokes you
@@nineephe yeah I was thinking that same thing! What a terrible impractical design on something that expensive! You can tell that no expense was spared in this ring. So I don't know why they want to be cheap and try to save a few bucks by not adding the Platinum bar
As he mentioned, it took Lazer welding to take care of this without heating the stone. Could simply be a matter of time and tech not being in the right place for it to be widely possible until recently.
It was badly designed. Especially for a obviously very expensive ring.
I don't know diamonds, but emeralds that color and clarity can be more costly than most gems.
So, a lot of vintage jewelry has a cage like back. It allows the stones to breathe, allows sunlight to penetrate through, and was usually done in intricate designs rather than as just supports. I have some emerald earrings and pendants that are from India, and they all have this cage on the back.
My mum gave me a ring five years ago that was very tiny and I have sausage fingers. The setting is stunning, two triangles set to look like an hourglass and then a diamond infinity symbol half each either side on the band. I took it to a jeweller at the time who said that resizing the ring wouldn't work due to the design. So it sat in pride of place in my jewelery drawer and i would look at it and wish I could wear it. It became especially precious because we lost mum this past May. After following your channel and watching your content you inspired me to give it another go. I found a manufacturing jewller who resized the ring no trouble just in time for my 15th wedding anniversary this past December. I don't usually ever comment on things but I really wanted you to know that I appreciate it so much.
That is so heartwarming to hear, thank you for sharing that story. Us jeweler’s might be few and far between but there’s still plenty of us who are highly competent. I’m so happy my videos have inspired you and I’m even happier that you can wear that precious history that sat so long in your drawer.
Congratulations on your 15 years of wedded joy!
Oh I love this for you! And happy anniversary!
i’m so glad you got it resized! in the future you can also put rings on carabiners!
Oh, how lovely! I'm so glad for you. ❤
I love hearing the back stories of the pieces you show us.
I have a very old emerald and diamond ring set that was passed down 3 generations to me. Ive tried to take it to grt resized and tighten the prongs but ive had 2 jewelers tell me they didnt feel comfortable working on it because of the emeralds.
Ive been torn on just doing maintenance on it or having it redone to my style.
I think ive settled on leaving it as is and just doing maintenance on it. I have another handed down wedding ring set passed down to me for me to redesign into my own wedding ring set. Ive decided since it will be redone when my husband and i can afford it i will keep the emerald and diamond set as is.
I SO wosh you were local to me. You would be my jeweler without a doubt!
I’m glad you are preserving the family history in your beautiful jewelry!
Possibly you could mail it to Massoyan Jewlers. I think that with their skills and good communication it could work out well for you. Just my opinion. Have a great day!
@@kathyh4735 They don't do mail in services, says so on their profile. If they did I have a ring I'd send in a heartbeat.
@@kathyh4735 According to the channel's description, they don't do mail-in repairs though.
Gorgeous ring, great job.
Helen’s husband has good taste, that is a beautiful ring!
I think so too! I'm glad you like it!
Ikr! It’s gorgeous! Never seem something like that before
Right?! First time I’m interested in what the couple looks like because the design is so gorgeous like they must have the best style based on their taste!
@chhavisinghal3790 It's Art Deco from the 1920's I believe. You don't see Emeralds like that anymore unless they are Antique. Stunning ring!
Agreed. That is probably the prettiest ring I've ever saw.
WHAT 👏 A 👏 RING 👏. Can we just appreciate that ring! Like wow 🥹 you did the ring the justice it deserves. So many jewelers just botch resizing..you've made it an art!
Thank you so much!
“It’s a symbol of their love”
A ring that pokes her with loving annoyance 😂
It doesn’t poke anymore!
@ now it’s a comfort love 😌
Did you see what it did to his fingernail!?!😬😬😬😬😬
@ yeah. Loving annoyance 😂
That ring is absolutely BREATHTAKING!!! 😮🤩 Emeralds are one of my absolute favourite gemstones, definitely in my top 3 at least! And the intricate, detailed metalwork with all that millegrain is stunning. This is one of the prettiest pieces of jewelry I’ve ever seen! Looks vintage too, I’d guess it’s art deco era?
Thank you. It’s certainly an Art Deco design, modern recreation. Art Deco is by far my favorite era for all things jewelry and architecture.
@@MassoyanJewelers Ah, I see, thank you! I love art deco era jewelry as well :)
It's gaudy and bulky. This thing is kind of dumb. Rich people are ridiculous.
As a wannabe silversmith/jeweler hobbyist, I really appreciate your videos and tips and tricks. The stories you share give the 'tutorials'/examples more meaning to me, so I remember it better too. Again, thank you.❤
That means a lot to me, I’m glad you find them helpful.
I have had a special ring for 10 years that was always too small, but after losing weight I've been able to wear it now. It was a milestone gift from my first job for reaching 5 years which isn't much to brag about but I have so many great memories from that job, we were like a family. It's gold with 3 sapphires (they replace one with a diamond every 5 years reached, I was there for 8 years)
Damn, sounds like a nice place to work! With good folks around you
back then you got a ring for working at a place for 10 years. nowadays you thank your boss if they spit on you lmao
Great job keep up the hard work 😊
You killed it, especially with the fix to be able to wear the ring without the diamond scratching her finger. 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
Stunning! Owning a jewelry store for 40 yrs has been a amazing journey for me - and I’m still going at 61. That being said, there is always something new to learn. I have passed on some tips to my goldsmith. The one thing I noticed you did was so simple like putting the emeralds in water while sizing. Love watching you
Wow 🤩 that’s a stunning ring , you did such a great job putting the piece underneath to stop the diamond from scratching. I’m sure she loved 🥰 it especially now that it’s been resized and she can now wear it again ❤❤
Oh my god that ring is absolutely gorgeous.! There's Nothing more beautiful than emeralds AND diamonds 😍
Oooohmygawd!!! That ring is what my Art Deco dreams are made of 😍😍😍
Helen’s husband is a real GEM too!❤
What a STUNNING emerald ring!!! Love it!!!
Oh wow that curved bar was such an clever solution! 😮
Helen has the most beautiful diamond and emerald ring I've ever seen. 😍 Congratulations to them both!! And amazing fix!
That looks beautiful AND comfy to wear without ruining the original look. Your work has kept on popping up in my shorts and they're a fascinating watch
Yay, thank you!
Thank you for being an inspiration and teacher for me unintentionally. I am an amateur jeweler as a hobby and videos like these help me learn
I’m glad you’re finding it helpful!
What a beautiful ring! You don't find emeralds with that color and clarity these days. And the diamond is a whopper. Great job!
He is an expert who knows his job perfectly. Amazing!
I started as a jeweler's apprentice a little more than 2 years ago and have learned so much since then. I would have to say working on these older pieces and modifying them to give them a little bit more life to live are probably my favorite jobs to do.
I came back to say that is the most beautiful emerald ring design I've seen. It's perfect
Fifty fifth anniversary gift, at the youngest 18 when married, at youngest this woman is 73, and shes begining a weight loss journey! Thats an extraordinary effort at her age, good for Helen.
This is what I've been going over in my head.
On the other hand she could also be losing weight because of a health problem. Hopefully it’s not that though. Also marriage is allowed before 18 in many parts of this country so 73 isn’t the youngest she could be but also it could have been the anniversary of when they became a couple, not necessarily their wedding anniversary.
@@cav8285I’m doubtful this is the case since he said she’s “going through a weight loss journey” and not just that she’s lost weight.
@@Astral_Drago that sounds about right. Just from my personal experience, every time an elderly person started to lose noticeable weight it was always because they were sick but I hope that’s not the case like you said. Good point.
@@cav8285 Definitely more common for it to be something wrong at that age, hopefully she’s just being active and healthy, it just feels weird for him to bring it up at all, much less word it like that if she’s unwell.
I love how uniquely informative every video is. No piece has the same story 😊
What a gorgeous ring!
The work is astounding but TBF, Helen’s husband is a real superstar!
That’s an enchanting ring. I believe it’s “vintage inspired” versus being actual vintage, right? If it’s vintage, it’s quite pristine. Either way, it’s a stunning ring. Emeralds are the way to my heart 😂. I’m sure Helen was delighted with your longterm & thoughtful customizing. How could she not be? She has to know she is loved by a man with great taste 😉
I’m gonna take another look❤
❇️💍!!
It is indeed a modern recreation of a vintage style.
That ring is stunning! How lucky to have a spouse with such elegant taste💚
Dang. Go Helen’s husband. What a special guy!!!
A ring with some color is so much better than a boring old diamond ring in my humble opinion.
Beautiful job and congratulations to her on her weight loss and receiving that ring! It's stunning! So glad she gets to wear it.
Gorgeous ring. Fine craftsmanship on the modifications.
You are so clever. I so enjoy watching your videos. Such interesting stories and problems to solve
Ooh Helen and her husband have good taste - this ring is gorgeous!
I love the fact that you explain what you are and the item's backstory. Most of these kinds of channels just play music or the sped up audio of the crafting.
Gorgeous ring Helen! Beautiful job!
Tapered baguettes are so gorgeous. What a magnificent upgrade you gave to this wonderful symbol of Helen & her husband's love!
What a gorgeous ring.❤️❤️
I've never really been into jewelry. I have some that I wear but it's never really been that important to me. After watching this video with the amazing story and work you put into this, I think I finally get it.
God that ring is an absolute dream 😍 Your work makes it absolutely perfect!
Gosh thats a beautiful ring and a great fix, as someone who has studied jewellery making at university i love to watch your videos and how you go about difficult repairs
That is a BEAUTIFUL ring. Great job! 💎💚
When I first started watching this channel, I didn’t think I’d look forward to watching the next one come out, but oh boy was I wrong. I love how you explain the process. I find this channel and there are times it is a good way for me to just winded down.
Ace job on this! It was also a good idea submerging the gem underwater to protect it from the heat!
Ive had this mile stone as a gastric bypass patient. Its such a surreal and amazing feeling!!
I send her all the love and confidence.
That pattern weld hammer looks awesome your bench is set up so well
God bless you, sir you care about people stuff and that’s a blessing not very many people do so God bless you and keep up the good work. You make a lot of people happy with the way you fix their jewelry.❤🎉 you’re the best
World class bench work. A true craftsman.
That is one of the most beautiful rings I've ever seen. Wow!! He did a good job picking it out. She's lucky to get to wear it. You did a great job too. Thanks for sharing ❤❤
this! Is a gorgeous ring and awesome work!!
Helen’s husband did a really good job with that ring. It’s beautiful. You did an excellent job.❤
A health journey and a man with good taste!?? You’re killing it Helen!
I come here for the stories. Hearing good things gives me such a happiness boost. Thank you for sharing.
WOW, what a beautiful ring and congratulations to her and her husband 55 years is amazing. Nice job. Do you cut stones, Emeralds specifically?
And now you just convinced me to go to re-shape my ring... I have been under a really intense therapy of exercises and that includes my fingers because exercise helps with pain. My wedding ring now is perfect for my pinky finger. Thanks for the video
That ring is stunning.. excellent work!!
You, Sir, are a master of your craft!
Thank you for sharing your knowledge!
Beautiful ring. I love the clever changes to make it wearer friendly
Thank you for sharing the story and especially the process and how you problem solve. Truly fascinating, skilful work. ⭐️✨
Tjat's a badass design! Husband has good taste.
I love emeralds. What a lovely ring and anniversary gift.
Whoa what a beautiful ring!
Oo, congrats on the success, Miss Helen!
And congrats to you, Mr. Jeweller! I love the stories, the process, and _RESULT!_
P.S. I would love getting to put on the rings like that! Of course, _respectfully_ - not trying to go wearing other people's treasured items - but just even for a moment. I can tell you treat your clients and their property with utmost respect.
As ever, thanks for sharing another beautiful treasure with this part of its story. Your videos are so well done! The music, sound, visuals, details, so many elements all balanced so fantastically!
i recognize this ring! the engagement right i've been eyeing for some time is from that collection!
That’s a great eye you have! I love how many people are recognizing these pieces, and it’s a great honor for people to be inspired by them.
Wow this one was really impressive to me. I don't wear jewelry but I like these old pieces that carry stories, and it's beautiful to see you extend their lives and improve the experience for the wearers
Gorgeous. I love Emeralds 💚.
i did jewelry making in high school and in college but it's been a very long time since then (about three or four years now). i'm currently living vicariously through you until i can complete my dream of having a small metals studio in a future home :) thank you for the amazing content!
Whoever made that ring and put the diamond in without anything to protect the bottom should be humbled
I wonder how much it cost?
That ring is gorgeous! I really enjoy Hearing facts about precious and semiprecious stones and metals it’s very interesting. You’re workmanship is top notch beautiful 🤩
Is there a name for this kind of ring? Would you say it’s art deco? It’s si beautiful I’ve never seen anything like it wow!
Yes, an art deco style halo cocktail ring. I believe the original design was by Oscar Friedman.
Job well done! I have a 6 carat diamond ring from my dad and I have the same problem with the stone cutting into my finger, but thanks to you I have the solution so I can wear it again. Cheers!
The fact that they didn’t add that bar across there, despite the diamond sticking through, tells me that maker is cheap.
Beautiful transformation, I really enjoy seeing this type of work and craftsmanship 👍
Love your videos. You are a true Artisan. Your work is exquisite and thoughtful!
Emerald is the most beautiful gem, and that setting is masterful.(and the resizing)
that ring screams art deco! so gorgeous and unique
What a beautiful ring and I’m gonna tell you right now I am somewhat in the jewelry business in New York City and just looking in that quickly what this guy did in this short video I will tell you he definitely knows what he’s doing. What a quick, simple and beautiful fixthat’s a master jeweler for you. We all just had our 30 second master class.😂😂😂
That's a BEAUTIFUL ring. wow!
I be but a humble carpenter, yet I appreciate good craftsmanship in any trade. Concise and digestible content. I wish I could like it thrice.
Helen, you clearly have a very blessed marriage with a man who loves you that much to buy something so beautiful as a symbol of your years together. To choose an Emerald for something like a celebration of a beautiful life together always makes my heart feel so warm as most people do not realize that an emerald, being one of the most beautiful stones in the world, one of the most difficult to find with so few flaws that the one you have looks almost perfect, as well as how delicate they are even though they are “rock” by nature. An Emerald is the perfect ring to sum up a lifetime of love.
Beautiful, yet delicate, difficult to find “flawless” yet too much “heat” can almost destroy it…….but if treated with care, it will remain beautiful for more than a lifetime.❤❤
What a beautiful piece. Thats an heirloom type beauty.❤❤ and beautiful work as well. 😊
Beautiful Ring, Superior Job on modification. Bravo!
Flawless work! It's as if you never even touched it - no evidence left behind 😮 You're in the right profession, for sure!
That’s a gorgeous ring and I wish I had something similar someday. Helen’s husband has very good taste.
What a great job and gorgeous ring. Happy 50th,🎉🎉🎉❤❤❤ God Bless!
That is one of the most beautiful rings I’ve seen! It’s incredible how you are able to save the original ring or add something that takes it to a whole new level. Count me impressed.
Did he say "their 55th anniversary" ?!!! If that's the case, I wish them nothing but the best, mad respect for their love, patience and maturity... some of us won't even keep contact with a person for half that long but they loved each other and stayed together... congrats, mad respect ❤️
Such a beautiful ring 💍😍🥰
Awesome job man 👏🏽💯
Thank you, I appreciate that!
Art comes in all forms, and a artist can blend new and old seamlessly.
That’s a bad looking ring. In such a good way. One of a kind. Would love my wife to wear one. Congratulations. 🍾
That burning transition at 0:16 was an awesome addition to see and the end result of the ring is marvelous!
Thank you for adding the extra layer instead of smoothing the diamond ❤❤
Never seen a ring so beautiful 😮
This ring isn’t for me, but each of your videos are truly impressive to me! Love hearing the stories you tell with them! Hope to find someone that I will one day spend the rest of my life with.
The editing of this is 🤌🏻. You are getting so so good at the cinematography of these videos. Also, I’m obsessed with watching the beads of solder melting into the cracks. So satisfying to watch!
Such a wonderful jeweler, very considerate about the emeralds and the man's wife for what she wanted. I would take my jewelry to him.
Jewelry stuff is always very interesting to me - it's a lot of the same fabrication techniques I'm familiar with in an industrial and hobby context, but on a much smaller scale. I feel like a railway worker watching someone build model railroads.
Gorgeous ring! Great execution of repairs and corrective augmentation based on the customers issues! ✨ 🏆 ✨🐉
That is one spectacular ring!!! Gorgeous work on the resize!
