Yes Europeans and the West are always right about environmental issues. And they are the ones who shout about environmental issues the most, and they lie about their country being the most environmentally friendly. Developing countries also want to be developed countries!

Europe cleared their forests to become developed countries. Now they are fuming when developing countries try to industrialize by clearing even just a small area of forest. Fact is forest/wildland is everywhere in Indonesia. You have to clear some to develop the economy. No other options, unless the West would provide advanced technologies to developing countries so there is no need to develop area-intensive economy. Or, the West would give "carbon tax" fund to developing countries for preserving the forests. However, the realities are the West don´t want to give advanced techs. In addition, the West promises to give carbon tax are all empty talks.

If mining nickel in Indonesia is dirty, why western country sues Indonesia over nickel ore export ban? Western dont care about environment in Indonesia if they can get nickel ore to run their stainless steel and EV industries. Sudenly they talk about environment when Indonesia build nickel downstream for global EV supply chain and stainless steel that can replace western as a producers. Thats all. Its all just about money and hypocrisy.

  • @antosaputrakurniawan

When the Indonesian government sought to ban nickel exports, they invited all parties to invest in building their own smelters in the country. However, rather than investing in creating environmentally friendly nickel smelters, Western nations brought this issue to the WTO in an attempt to cancel this move. Their main fear was losing the nickel ore for their own smelters.
China was the one of few countries that had the courage to invest in Indonesia. If western countries are concerned about the environmental impact, why don't they come in and invest here, showing us how it can be done in an environmentally friendly manner?

      you are correct of course.
west only care about enriching themselves by selling weapons & military equipment. at least indonesia is lucky to have developed asians (technically china is not developed yet, but you could treat them as such, korea, japan, spore, etc) that are willing to share their knowledge and prosperity.
watchout also for non-west losers being jealous of indonesia climbing up the economic ladder so they will badmouth indonesia's effort.

@elfrjz if you want to question about what freeport brought to development in indonesia, then you should question what did soeharto and his 'friend' gained from freeport. not very much done in papua (where the freeport located) while soeharto in power. he was the one who brought freeport to papua and gave them 'everything'. there even no a good road from jayapura (papua capital, located in north-east side) to manokwari and sorong in the west or merauke in the south-east.

European Union: "Stop it, palm oil products are banned, they destroy the environment!!!"
When we stopped exporting our mineral raw materials, one of them was nickel..
European Union : "No, don't do it. Give your mineral (Nickel), don't discriminate against the global market!!!"

I was doing a foreign geopolitical research in the past 2013, with the title "How the US played its Superpower Role for Economic Development in Indonesia for so many years". There is something I can learn from that research. When there is something that the US and the Allies want to obtain from Indonesia such as nickel and other resources, the US always plays its "Propaganda Media" as a tool to discriminate against all of developing country for cheap and more valuable imported commodities to US Factories. But the facts say it's difficult for the US because of their condition that they have to create a producing factory in Indonesia to create more jobs for Indonesians. That's a minus for the US.
And kudos to our old brother in Asia like China, Japan, South Korea, and other Arab Nation Country for seeing Indonesia as a Trading Partner for Indonesia with a win-win impact sollutions, not as a "Developing Country" by mannipulating all of it's resources for the sake of U.S and Allies around the western globe.

    • @agusmedan9617
      @agusmedan9617 Год назад +70

Exactly! Indonesia has been the world's largest nickel reserve for over 3 decades, and no one talked about Indonesian forests when Indonesia was still exporting the raw materials of nickel. But when Indonesia bans the raw material export of nickel, most western countries like the EU and US suddenly come out and pretend to care about the Indonesian forest. This is ridiculous!
The fact is, there's 39% left forested land area in EU, and 34% left forested land in US. While Indonesia still has 64% forested land. (Source: European Parliament; Forest Org; WWF)
Also about biodiversity impact, there are 36 extinct species (within the 20th - 21st century) in the EU, and 1,677 endangered to extinct species in the EU. And there are 152 extinct species in the US (within the 20th - 21st century), and more than 1,300 endangered species in the US. (Source: European Parliament; US Environmental Protection Agency)
While in Indonesia, there's only 4 extinct species (within the 20th -21st century), and 223 endangered species. (Rainforest Mongabay; Convention on Biological Diversity)
      Conclusion:
      1) EU and US should stop being a hypocrite trying to tell Indonesia about deforestation and nature impacts. They should start to take care of their own forest!
      2) EU and US should stop pretending to teach Indonesian about forestry, they should learn from Indonesian instead!
      3) EU and US (INCLUDING ALL COUNTRIES) should return a minimum of 50% of their lands to become forests again, and stop putting all the forest burden on Indonesia while US and EU can keep destroying their forests as they like. Because forest is not the responsibility of Indonesians only, it's a global issue, and all countries are responsible!

the efforts made by the Indonesian government in collaboration with several investors from China are the right choice, why? This must be done because the European side does not want to invest in building a smelter. This has also caused a lot of criticism from Europe, especially towards environmental pollution, do they think their country is so environmentally friendly in supporting the mines they have been managing for a long time? it was they who used to pollute the environment, an example in England 30-50 years ago.

It seems like the spotlight turned sharply on Indonesia's nickel industry precisely when the country took a stand to enhance its own value chain. Framing one island's story as a representation of the whole, especially in a nation as diverse and vast as Indonesia, does raise questions about the motives behind such narratives. It's about fair play and respecting a nation's right to develop its own resources, isn't it? Calls for a more balanced and fair dialogue, free from old colonial shadows.

@@viperabyss It takes a lot of energy and nasty chemical processes to recycle used-up EV batteries. Plus, it's more expensive than making new batteries out of raw materials. Batteries are the weak link in the "clean" EV idea.

Spot on! It's like the world only took notice when Indonesia hit pause on raw nickel exports. Makes you wonder, where was all this attention when the exports were flowing freely, right? It's high time for recognition of the value added locally and for fair trade practices. It's not just about resources; it's about respect and fair play in the global market.

Indonesia hv been export Nickel from long long time ago, and no one either Asian or european care about how Indonesia dig the nickel. But after Indonesia ban to export raw material and start to process it by itself, suddenly EU, US, and Western Country such a make black campaign. They dont know that the Indonesia start to run the good minning governance, more active in monitoring the minning process to more green and friendly to environment etc. They only care about their own properity and forget that the owner of natural resources still developing. If you (white people) want to make Indonesia more eco friendly, come and invest in Indonesia. Share your knowledge and start to make cooperation. Indonesia is an open and non block country. Indonesia is one of the Democratic country, stable politic, and one of the highest Economic in the world. Stop to complaining without action, and start to come and invest in Indonesia before China took all sector in Indonesia.
