I loved the game. The monster catching mechanics. The sprawling dungeons. The fleshed out characters. The stylish animations. The amazing soundtrack. The gorgeous graphics. Anyway, that's why I believe Persona 5 Royal is such a good game.

@@zad_rasera Pfft as if Gamefreak would be biased enough that they'll make the champion's ace a mon from another generation rather than a one from the new generation. What is he the Kalos champion???😂😂😂
Actually in ruby and sapphire you did have a dad, he was just a gym leader, skipping that and the alpha and omega, your dad is just like half the Pokemon in this game, missing for no real reason.
Leon we only have a couple hundred thousand years TOPS. We don’t have time to waste on the battle. I’m going to go fire up my doomsday device or something idk.
Great review of Sw/Sh, you pretty much summed up everything I thought about gen 8 and very well. Edit: You really used my cringe shiny accelgor shitpost video LOL I hate it here.
The best part about the game, for me, was naming my character "...you" so that the plot actually made some sense because the dialogue made my character seem so forgettable that nobody actually remembered his name. "Congratulations, ...you! You've beaten the unbeatable Champion."
Good animations, cool routes, beautiful dungeons, a well-made story with its amazing characters. And don't forget the legendaries and the music, very underrated games in my opinion. damn i miss gen 5
I played black and sword back to back and holy shit. I really felt “close” to my team in black and loved the story, but then in sword my Pokémon were level 40 in like 5 min and I was half asleep the whole time. Black actually challenged me to think about my Pokémon, choose the right moves, the enemies are actually competent, rival isn’t a dumbass, and of course we meet N. In sword we get... team yell and hop
Guess all this time they just wanted to tell us with the anime that they refuse to evolve. It's long overdue that they make a serious anime with a more serious protagonist. I like Ash, but he should grow up.
@@maythesciencebewithyou Honestly I dont get why they dont try at least an attempt at a full season of a more mature anime. Theres clearly good reception to things like Origins,Generations and Twilight Wings. And its pretty clear they want to keep their older audiences with the Gen1 Baits. Not only that but theyd be making good money from it if it works. Pokemon company is strange
Something that annoys me about the games that wasn't talked about is the Corviknight Taxi's. In the initial reveal where they revealed several new pokemon including Corviknight, they stated it would taxi you around like how a pokemon using fly would. I was looking forward to seeing how they'd make this look in the game. and it's nothing but a loading screen... No animation of a Corviknight carrying a box down for you to ride in, no animation of it flying you somewhere, you just click a button and get a loading screen.
Probably just to avoid people who would complain that the fly animation takes too long. Considering how often people fly after beating the story, it would probably be annoying after a while.
I just want to say, I don't mind having no sound during a specific scene. For example, one of the most memorable moments in Pokemon was when you face Red at the top of Mt. Silver. When you talk to him, everything goes quiet, and it's super intense. Then the soundtrack blares as the battle begins. It's truly incredible. In this game, however, the moment between Rose and Leon feels awkward and lackluster.
If they were to remaster GS in the SwSh “artstyle” imagine just dead air, and then you see the dialouge bar and it says ... And it goes silent for a brief second then The battle starts
I see a lot of people saying that this game look like a PS2 or a 10 year old game, but in the PS2 we had Shadow of the Colossus, Dragon Quest VIII, Final Fantasy X and King Hearts 1 and 2. And 10 years ago (from the release of SwSh) we had Bayonetta 1, Batman Arkham Asylum, Dragon Age Origins, Call of Duty MW 2 and Left for Dead 2. This game isn't a game that looks old, this game is a bad game
10 years ago we also had Dead Rising 2, a Xbox 360/PS3 game which handles hundreds of zombies on screen, and looks way better than Sword and Shield in every conceivable level.
you're going too far in the comparison, the obvious one is the wii. a past console by the same company with a game in the same franchise that looked WAY better with less hardware power.
Can you imagine being on the Pokemon teams music department? Every other aspect of these games gets slammed with criticism and hate but everyone knows that the music is absolutely amazing.
I honestly feel like Rose could have been one of the most interesting villains in the series and all they had to do was say the energy crisis would occur in like 20 years instead of 1000. That would have made the impending fallout much more of a serious danger, and would have made Rose’s actions, while not justified, make a lot more sense, and would have painted the conflict as much more morally grey. But instead Rose ends up being the worst villain in the series all because of one tiny detail. It sucks
Rose Is a decent villan way Better than guys like Max and Ivan, Just for make you understand how bad they were even the Manga (the media Pokémon with the BEST narrative) wasn't able to give theam a decent story arc. They do It Just because they want to, with no motive or something similar. Same for: Cyrus, Giovanni, Elysion and Ghechis. Unlike Rose (and Lusamine) Who have a motive and and he coud also have Cassandra's sindrom (we Need to Wait for the crown tundra to be sure). SwSh are not good games, but I'm tierd of people ignorig past things Just for discrediting theam.
There's an infinite amount of better ways to execute the story and Rose's character. The story GameFreak delivered felt like it was put together 2 weeks before release and written by a 5 year old. Seriously.. You know a story is bad when it's bad even on pokemon standards. And Rose is the worst antagonist second only to Lysandre.
"Oh don't worry X and Y was just them testing the waters for the 3DS hardware" "Oh don't worry Sun and Moon was them testing how well they could make cut scenes" "Oh don't worry Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon was them testing some new mechanics" "Oh don't worry Let's Go Pikachu and Let's Go Eevee was them testing the Switch hardware for a real Pokemon game" "Oh don't worry Sword and Shield was just them testing the Switch hardware" "Oh don't worry Sword and Shield DLC's are just them testing how well they can make DLC" These are all excuses someone I know has made ever since X and Y was released, the game that was so unoptimized it suffered from frame drops, because they wanted to "Future Proof" the Pokemon models for future games, the same models that seem to have disappeared when Sword and Shield was in development, only for remarkably similar ones to appear come launch, like how funny is it that they even modeled the joints in Gyarados's whiskers the exact same way they looked on the 3DS? EDIT: Felt I should give y'all an update, today (One day after Paid DLC #1 came out) they started talking about how great the GTS system is, even though it's literally the same thing that was free every other game. "It's only 12 bucks a year!" Yeah it was 0 bucks a year for past games.
I agree with the rest of your sentiments, but I do firmly believe that for what X and Y were meant to be, I think they did well in terms of "testing the waters", after all, it's the first time a mainline game is dipping into 3D, it's by no means good but I think X and Y achieved what it set out to do, lay the foundation for the 3D era of games, whether it had a good or bad effect is up to interpretation
I like seeing old comments on pre-release videos saying “they’re going to fix the animations in X months!”, how naive can people still be after that lie?
*Update! The story is actually "bad" instead of "ok". I attributed too much credit that was a result of my self made restrictions that artificially boosted the only good aspect of the story. Other than that I feel the ratings were accurate What would you rate each section?
Most of the Pokémon along with all Mega evolutions shouldn’t have been cut for all of these bullshit excuses. A 3Ds can handle all Pokémon including 2 gimmicks like Z-moves and Megas but not a Switch with both Megas and Dynamax/G Maxing? Come on, Gamefreak, TPC, and Nintendo, they are the world’s highest grossing media franchise that makes 95 billion dollars as if that’s not enough for them? I expect more from them and being better than this when they are acting like those greedy and lazy triple AAA gaming companies. They better get it together and undo the problems like the dexcut in generation 9 because generation 8 is a half assed and rushed mistake and I can tell gen 4 remakes will suffer from this too with no megas and dex cut or god knows what else. They don’t get to make excuses anymore when cutting crap like everyone’s favorite Pokémon and other features. They caused Pokémon’s downfall.
I still think it’s maybe a 7/10 at best, at worse a 5. I’m personally enjoying it though. While it’s very underwhelming compared to the older games, it’s still Pokémon at its core, gameplay wise, which is the main reason I enjoy it. The rest of the Pokémon National Dex being locked behind a paywall though, suck. I seriously think Gamefreak fucked this game up on purpose for some stupid reason, there’s literally trees that look more “modern” yet they decide to use the N64 ones in the Wild Area. They could have also literally said something like “The National Dex will be slowly added throughout time” or something like that and they would have avoided so much controversy. Who was the dumbass who said they were making “High Quality Animations” again? Because honestly they’re to blame for the fan base being divided.
@@yzois that's the thing, the Pokemon franchise pretty much has firmly entrenched themselves into popular culture; all they need to do is put out something that is recognizably "Pokemon", regardless of quality, and they'll sell
@@professorxavier3878 that’s also fair. Since going 3D the games have gotten far more linear and the pace has gotten glacial. Also a heavy emphasis on gimmick moves and mega evolution type crap.
@@professorxavier3878 I don’t think 3d ruined Pokémon but game freak isn’t using the medium to its potential. If anything I like the 3d just game freak is lazy with everything
"An Insult to the Fans - but many fans have not noticed, sadly." That's perfectly summarizing it, if you ask me. Delusional Fans are definetly a part of the Problem. Edit, 1 year later: Quality became rare, but not extinct, which Sci Man Dan, HBomerberguy and Sci-Show are proof for. I warmly recommend 'em in these hard times.
It’s not delusion, it’s apathy. People don’t really notice the issue because they play the game, beat the story, do the dlc and then put the game down forever.
Seriously just look at the Pokémon fans in Instagram. They fucking love sword and shield and are completely fine with paying for extra. their only defense is that the dlc is good and that you’re just being salty and poor ._.
I didn’t mind for awhile because I thought people were overeating and to an extent yeah they were but like game freak was so lazy with this game it’s infuriating because I felt like it had the potential to be a really good game but game freak was just to lazy to put any genuine effort into it.
Remember when everyone overbashed gen5 for no valid reason? Little did people knew it was the last time a Pokemon game would be great. We had it good back then..
Actually, every generation has had a group of people saying that "Pokemon isn't any good anymore" since Gen 5. The only reason why this got so big was because they cut the dex. That's where they fucked up the most this time around. Not many people would've batted an eye so long as they got their favorite pokemon in the game. Since they did that, people started picking it apart every aspect of it all the way down to the minor details. But just like every single group of people that didn't like a game in the past, there will be a group that enjoys the game. Personally speaking, I liked the game but definitely think it's one of the most lacking titles. Anyone that says it's more lacking than USUM, is being disingenuous. The fact that USUM got little backlash for being nothing more than Sun and Moon with a couple new pokemon, a slightly altered story, and a few news things littered here and there, still baffles me. The fact that there are so many people complaining about a unique game installment compared to the last mainline entry in the series is $60 yet barely anyone complained about spending $40 on a game they probably already owned, is bullshit. I honestly believe that there are a lot of people hating on the game just because it was the trendy thing to do on Twitter. That being said, I agree that this game could've and should've been better especially with the budget that they _should_ have. We technically don't know how their finances are set up, so we're speculating at best but I digress. The point is, this game is severely lacking in some important aspects which were pointed out in this video, yet it had plenty going for it to. That's why I like how he was fair with his judgement in this video and this is one of the few fair assessments I've seen on the web. Either people are too biased against or in favor of Pokemon/Game Freak making it hard to find genuine critiques like this video. The thing is, like I said, this game's reception will get better over time as we move onto the next game and so on just like the games that got labeled as "bad" in the past. Technically speaking, they were all bad in their own right as they were good, but it depends on the lens that you look at it. If you look for the bad and you'll see the bad, you look for the good and you'll see the good. I loved all of Gen 5-6 games and I liked Sun and Moon, but I cant get over what happened with USUM. No matter how I look at it, SwSh was a step up from USUM and I actually like that they're getting rid of the "sequels" and replacing it with DLC. Depending on how that turns out will dictate how I feel about the overall experience of SwSh. Still, there were too many poor choices in the development and marketing of SwSh that had noticeable outcomes in the gameplay.
When gen 5 came around you could clearly the amount of care and effort Gamefreak put into it. Yet it didn't sell well at all. Years later and now that they have stopped giving a damn about the games and only do the bare minimum+kanto pandering, they are selling like hot cakes. WHY would they try to improve the games and add depth to it??? They have no reason to. The recent games especially SwSh have shown them that all they need to do is the bare minimum and some pandering to make sure that sales are great. They have zero incentive to improve 😒😔😔
@@Azu_Crystal This is such a shit argument. Adding features and then continuing to cut them is regression. This game brings to mind the saying 'I'm not angry, just disappointed.' There's so much potential for this franchise and being the most successful franchise in the industry, its completely laughable and pathetic that this is the fin product.
I agree, although tbh Gen 5 had a lot of problems too at the time. It was the first story heavy Pokemon game, with cutscenes and everything, and the story as well as the talking dragged on for so long compared to older games. N became the focal point similar to how the gym leader is in SWSH. The overworld was so limited, that you had less ability to choose direction compared to older games, so you got a very linear progression. The pokemon designs (though leaps better then newer designs) were also hit and miss with most people. Some of my favourite Pokemon are from 5th gen, but things like Thunderous, Klingklang, the ice cream cone and similar just felt off. And that's despite the countless Pokemon tropes that they kept retreading for the 5th time. Now, 5th gen had a lot of amazing elements as well, least of which is the enhanced battle system, how many new niches were formed, the lovely artstyle and 2D animation, the cool gyms and their gimmicks, heck even team Plasma was a breath of fresh air compared to former teams. But if you look at the game from the time it was released and compared it to its predecessors, there were genuine complaints to be had there, much of which were steps that with each iteration lead to SWSH. That said, I agree with you, I like to think that even though I got tired of playing the game rather quickly, I felt 5th gen was the last genuine Pokemon game for me. Everything after I can't really recognize personally for various reasons.
@stinky I agree with trubbish. I disagree with vanillite. Voltorb is supposed to be a mimic, it's where the whole idea sprang from. Secondarily it also has a fitting plausible backstory in that they could be ghost Pokemon caught in malfunctioning Pokeballs from freak factory accidents, fusing with them. Even if the design is a bit too easy, if you look at its context and function, it's leaps better than vanillite imo. Vanillite doesn't really lend itself to a plausible backstory, and in function its essentially a block of ice shaped like an ice cream cone. That's not very interesting or expressive, but more importantly, it ruins the verisimilitude of Pokemon imo exactly because of how on the nose the inspiration is. In general an ice cream cone aesthetic doesn't do anything for its design, neither looks wise or gameplay wise. Trubbish is a much better design because it isn't literally on the nose a trash bag, it only resembles one, and you can more easily see it as a living breathing creature, especially in a world where Pokemon like Muk and the 3rd gen slime Pokemon exist. That's just my opinion though
Besides charizard being a main protagonist's pokemon, getting an special form and some galarian pokemon, there wasn't even that much nostalgia pandering on this generation and they still sold so much
According to Serebii, Eternatus has a Catch Rate of 255, the same as a rattata or a zubat. So why Leon didn't just fuckin beat the game for you considering he's been the one playing it, is surprising.
"It seems like gamefreak just arbitrarily decide what they what to bring back or what to exclude depending on what they feel any given day" *"PREACH IT PREACH IT"*
Everybody Genius Sonority hasn't made a Pokemon game since Pokemon shuffle in 2015 and that was just a puzzle game. Their last stadium game was PBR and that was in 2007. Almost sounds like they were abandoned if you ask me.
Mega evolutions are something you can kill and win without using in doubles or singles. Dynamax is the opposite of that but worse when have twice the stats, hp boost, holding items, ignores abilities and typings as a whole and breaks the rules of abilities when they are pointless now along with typings. You can’t just let a ground type get effected by electric types when electric types are not effective at all, ignores other moves, and summons a damn terrian in the battlefield that can boost something. There is no restrictions to this gimmick and it acts like a win button. Gamefreak doesn’t care about balance and this gimmick proves it. D/G maxing determines the fights mostly.
@@xlbthedemigod5662 naw bro in gen 6 and 7 you had to run a mega on your team and even then only like 7 of them were viable like kang and mence. it restricted team building because even though it made weak pokemon strong, there was almost no reason to run pokemon like houndoom, medicham, or ampharos because it meant you couldn't play pokemon like salamence or kangaskhan. Dynamaxing isnt restricted to specific pokemon, thus you arent restricted to one pokemon you dynamax which makes games much more dynamic ;) because it allows you to adapt certain situations instead of mega evolving the same pokemon every game
I wish instead of 1000 years rose had said 20, and that it was dynamax energy that was running out. Then he could say eternatus would renew that energy. But yeah, the darkest day made no sense as a way to advert an energy crisis.
The problem is: in a universe with all the things humans can do in the real world for energy + the energy pokemon produce with their types, with evolution, precious metals that produce energy, you have infinity energy that can corporatioms have already started to harmess, etc. There is just no way to believe an energy crisis is possible in the pokemon world. Even if their was an issue, itd be able to be sorted out in a couple months. Rose's plot could be solved by hiring the best scientists Devon Corp has to offer, or get a committe to find a way to have galar run on different energy source.
Giving the story an "ok" rating for the gym challenge is so generous. The gyms are set up early as having little mini challenges to qualify for the actual fight. The fairy, dark, and dragon gyms you literally just walk in and do them... It was so disappointing doing gym 7, then Leon saves the world off screen and you walk into gym 8 and it's just a room with 3 people in it... Ugh.
@@flukemunga2236 what makes you assume it was off? I had my sound on the entire run through, the music in no way influences that the last few gyms are a mad disappointment in narrative... you'll need to expand your explanation.
btw i still don' tunderstand how shitty mini game is innovative ro a good point ... the "puzzle" or "mini games" where lame and easy so much you wonder why putting them here in the first place betetr to just have a straight hallway in final.
I hated what they did to Bede. Developing him off-screen and showing a completely new personality felt uncalled for. I wonder if cutting him out of the story would give Rose the chance for more time to develop his character and motivation because Rose really needs more depth. Regarding Leon, it always made me sad when he ran off to investigate things and left the player to do the gym challenge. So I wholeheartedly agree on the statement that he is the main character, because I sure didn’t feel like it.
Bonjour, fellow Trainers. I ask around, trying to find out how many people are (rightfully) mad about the ridiculous Difficulty BUT YET have not played Mystery Dungeon (especially 'Sky')?! Award-winning Music and the most complex Story in the Franchise are present things, but most importantly: The difficulty. The stress, the challenge, the Everything. This is how Pokemon Games should be. Mystery Dungeon Sky is literally the same Story-producing Stuff like that legendary Miltank - you know which one. Everything that is good about Challenge and Self-Worth and all that; its all in this Game. So? Youre mad about the Franchise, you feel its lacking - but you never played PMD-Skye or P-Ranger?!
@@slevinchannel7589 I've played PMD Sky and Red Rescue Team and I loved them both. I've also played Pkmn Ranger and Shadows of Almia. They were all challenging for me in their own ways, but mostly since I was just a kid back then. I still listen to the soundtracks to this day. I think combining the powerful story of PMD Sky and the mainline games would be very interesting.
Ngl....i hated Bede the whole time 🙈 and when i got to the end I felt like him becoming the Fairy Gym leader and suddenly being the player characters “friend” wasnt deserved
I was so excited to go against Bede, it’s been forever since we’ve had a rival that was an actual asshole. The last one was what, Silver? But even then they just made him a slightly bitchy errand boy then shafted him to be the newest fairy gym leader (even though he was a psychic type trainer until the last second).
Pokemon should be accesible for everyone. In other words: lets make they stupidly easy take out any bit of history and themes so no one has to think about anything on the game and just mash A until you see the credits
more like "pokemon should be accesible by everyone" actually means "make pokemon unplayable for everyone, even children because its not fun to press the a button and auto win"
@MagiColorful Moon Try it out and if you feel like preparing a team is too tedious, go to www.play.pokemonshowdown.com which is an online battle simulator where you can easily create a team of your own and start battling.
Ppl legit saying 'dEvELoPinG gAMes iS hARd' as a defence. It's literally their job. They get paid big bucks to do it. The game itself is a first party title and costs 60$. The quality is that of a nintendo DS game. How unfair is it when so many other developers do amazing jobs with half of the support/financial backing/fame? People who defend companies and brands are literal children or belong in 2012 with that level of naivety. Edit: DS ones are great games and they didn't deserve being compared to SwSh. What I meant was that they didn't evolve in any way since the time of the DS.
Actually, it's hard to please millions of people, and even hard to create an objective masterpiece. Armchair devs doesn't get the right to criticize the actual devs out there. Also, it's an industry that is notorious for the "crunch". It's not okay for devs to be overworked and underpaid.
@@Shadowespeon17 wtf are you on about, of course armchair devs get the right to criticize actual devs. Crunch isn't a relevant argument. By the logic of crunch the game should be a lot better. @@Shadowespeon17 Lol crunch has nothing to do with consumers or "armchair devs" it's just bad management and overzealous marketing. They could actually wait until the game is almost done and then give the devs a buffer to do the finishing touches which usually takes longer. players don't care when games come out. look at animal crossing, it was delayed an entire year and it did record-breaking numbers. people care about a finished, high quality game. if a studio as famous and rich as gamefreak has to crunch and delivers a subpar product compared to their peers, that's 1000% their fault. they deserve all the criticism in the world for it.
To expand my thoughts. I love Marnie. She seemed to be the only one that viewed the sports contest as a thing to enjoy and have fun with. I also found the fact that Team Yell had environmental "be quiet for the pokemon" while also being punk rockers kinda funny. I know/am enough punk environmentalist to take it as a friendly joke. idk.
I honestly felt Marnie was one of the best characters. She was kinda underused though, maybe instead of Piers Marnie could have followed Hop and the player? Would seem to make more sense as it would create sword and shield’s trio like Ash’s trio. She could have been altered to play a bigger role though maybe she finds out piers was trying to steal dynamax energy for their stadium or whatever. this isn’t what pokemon would ever do as they want to be for kids mainly but I really wish that Bede didn’t get kidnapped by an old lady when he could have played a bigger role, maybe sabotaging your stadium battles out of hate. he could also have been really wanting to beat you to pieces kind of hateful and then progressively have gotten more and more evil, maybe even using pokemon such as Solgaleo or Zekrom showing that he truly has become evil and has gotten all these pretty illegally obtained pokemon to use against other weaker trainers. Hop could have gotten way better pokemon and could have actually made your losing or winning to him change the story. I wish you could have played as multiple characters too like Leon.
You know I think there's a lot of potential wasted with the "Team Yell" In this world we have the trainers being like Sports Champions and that stuff. And the team Yell are basically Hooligans. Could you imagine the posibilities? More than one Team Yell (With different name of course) each one on the side of one of the pokemon trainers. That we get fights betwen these groups of Hooligans. Some get mad when they champion loose and start making chaos. God! Maybe even one team who is on your side. Could you imagine? A "Team Yell" who supports you in the game and have your photo on their banner like they do with Marnie. But instead we get these guys...
I just don’t understand why they can’t model some variety in the npc’s. did game freak seriously create two models for team yell and then copy paste the egg dude like 20 times and say good job?
The story definitely needed a revamp. How about instead of the mystery energy crisis happening in a thousand years, it happens in a week or two? Chairman Rose notices that power is being drawn into the egg and is talking about it to Oleana. The way they help postpone the energy crisis is by feeding wishing stars to the egg, which Eternatus is basically stealing the power to grow stronger. The player first learns about this by seeing Rose talking with Bede, praising his training progress and the amount of wishing stars he's collected. Bede thanks him and boasts more. Boom, immediate signs of a connection while showing character. During the journey, there are signs of the power going out and trainers mentioning Pokemon acting strange. Heck, this could be shown to the player by there being more aura Pokemon that actively chase you down. Even the more docile species go after you. Although have repel keep them away to avoid annoying the player. When the player and Hop meet up in Hammerlocke, there are multiple explosions. Leon and Sonia run off to take care of the Powerplant, but the player and Hop go take care of a rampaging Pokemon. More people comment how Pokemon are acting strange. Then when Bede destroys the mural, he vaguely says he truly knows what is going on and wants to help, but Rose says that he went too far. This causes Bede to be dropped from the championship due to destroying the mural. The player collects more badges and places actually start going dark. They can still get around, but it is a sign that something is wrong. Then Pokemon start randoming dynamaxing from Eternatus releasing the strange energy. The first time it happens, the player, Leon and Hop end up taking it down via raid battle style. This prompts Leon to do more digging along with Sonia. When the player gets to Wyndon, it is completely dark with only lanterns providing light. Maybe some Pokemon are wearing lights to help guide the way and people are still gathering to watch the battles? Then when it is time for the player to come across Rose and Leon talking, there is a lot more urgency. He talks about how he needs help. How the powerplant isn't producing so little energy, that it is difficult to get anything done, and how they are on the verge of a crisis. He needs Leon's help to destroy something aka the egg. Leon tries to downplay it and to just wait a few hours. Once the championship battle is over, then he'll help. Rose is highly reluctant but relents. During the battle, there is the explosion and Rose confesses that he tried to destroy the egg himself. He talks about how the darkness is actually the Darkest Day and he tried to prevent it. How it was worse than he thought. Then everyone rushes off to take care of Eternatus. The player and Hop run into Sonia, who mentions the whole history of this happening before and how the legendary dogs stopped this. They go to the forest to try to summon the dogs and see flashes head towards Eternatus. Then they all battle. This could probably be polished more, but that's what came to my mind.
My biggest problem with the game was the fact that the player isn't even an active participant in the main story. All the stuff involving the plot happens off screen until the final battles. Then there is the "Rival". I didn't like him. He didn't feel like an actual rival since he was consistently beaten by both the player and the other trainers but still somehow managed to defeat the gym leaders. Bede felt like more of a rival and even had a character arc while our actual one didn't.
Hop had a character arc. But I don't blame you for missing it. It's the same friendly rival arc we've had since gen 4. Rival starts out excited. Rival battles trainer and loses while either praising us or brushing it off. Rival encounters an antagonist and loses. Rival loses confidence. Rival has last stand. Rival loses and either, A. Decides to change his/her approach to training and battling, or B. Chooses a different path. (Probably becoming a professor). There's nothing new with Hop. He's all the friendly rivals without any of their charm and memorable personalities. He might as well have came from X&Y. He's about as memorable as that ginger kid. And the game decided to shove him down our throats when we could have been getting to know Bede or Marnie more. At least X&Y had the nerve to let you go off on your own for more than 15 minutes.
@@Jibboe0214 I have to disagree that Hop isn't memorable, though I agree he has all the shades of the friendly rival arcs. Unlike all the nonGen5 friendly rivals, his development is definitely written and shown better than the rest of them.

There were also vocals if listened *real* closely in Ghetsis' battles, when you entered the Nimbasa City Gym for the first time, and even fucking Colress' theme had a few vocals just by listening closely even if there weren't so many. ...This is just embarrassing, this game just sucks.
Weirdest thing is that now that's what should have happened in all previous generations ADULTS taking care of things and we are just trainers instead of the world saviors (defeat Rocket, Magma, Aqua, Plasma, Flare, Galaxy, etc) HOW THE F*** ADDING COMMON SENSE TO THE GAME RUINED IT?!
I will never forget the feeling of running to a route outside of Hammerlocke where some story thing was going on, and then having the characters literally tell me that I didn’t need to see it, or I missed it. It was like getting punched in the face by a video game.
its honestly just lazy the way they cut hella corners around the cutscenes and gameplay. I didn't even realize until watching this video that The Leon and chairman talking bit were still pictures. My brain like assumed they were at least gifs or something, turns out they were just pictures
Distant, I just want to say thank you. For some reason, it seems as though it’s against the law to even criticize GameFreak right now, let alone point out the fact that they’re getting away with fraud. No one else is rubbing their nose in it like you. Your points are concise and comprehensive, and your videos stand as evidence for their shenanigans. I just want them to get rid of Masuda with his “Kids have no attention span, I’m bitter because of Pokémon GO” mentality. I want Nintendo to let another studio have a go at Pokémon. I want the ultimate Pokémon game, one that stands shoulder to shoulder with BOTW and Odyssey. If every game critic saw GameFreak for what it was, we may have some semblance of change. But they choose to stay blind. The fight seems a little hopeless, but...well, hope was the last thing to escape from pandora’s box. Thanks for fighting the good fight, man. Appreciate it.
If they gave you the "ultimate" game, how would they show off anything flashy for the next games. Seems like they're out of ideas so they gotta limit their releases. And people will still buy the games as long as something is new and novel.
Alvin Yours is a bad mentality to have. If everyone thought like you, no one would ever improve upon their old work. Flashy shit is easy. Making something good is hard, but it lasts forever. Zelda gave us the ultimate game. Mario gave us the ultimate game. Smash gave us the ultimate game. Why can’t Pokemon do the same? They aren’t special. Limiting their releases? You’re wrong as hell. Pokémon releases yearly now.
@@brandonchavez9924 I meant my last comment to be more sarcastic in tone. Of course an ultimate game would be nice (which is why I tend to look for hacks these days as they often satisfy what I want). The mindset is indeed lazy, not consumer friendly, and not good for the growth of the franchise, but it's not something I came up with, and I doubt it's within the power of you and I to get people who have these mindsets to change. Also when I said "limiting releases" I meant limiting the release of content. Especially because they're releasing yearly, I can see how, from a business standpoint, they might want to hold back on content and purposefully make things imperfect to have stuff to release. Ideally they would push their creativity and make new stuff but.. who knows. I personally would like to see what goes on in their game studios and whether these theories flying around about game freak are true.
Alvin Apart from sarcasm not translating well over text, there was nothing even remotely sarcastic sounding in your comment. That, I will agree with you. The best pokémon games ever made were made by fans. They’re all hacks and fangames. I never implied that you came up with it. I’m under no impression that this comment, or even this video will make a difference, but it’s worth a shot. Masuda reads fan feedback. If you read his interviews from the SSHG-BW2 era, he’s super passionate. Now he comes across as bitter, and jealous of Pokemon Go. If he reads the right comment, it could make a difference. I’m sick to death about hearing about things “from a business standpoint”. You think I don’t know Pokémon is too big to fail? You think I don’t know about the legions of morons who screech at the top of their lungs anytime you criticize GF? Please. You aren’t informing anyone. Look: Nintendo listened to the feedback after Skyward Sword, and BOTW was overcorrection to a fault. Zelda isn’t as big a franchise as Pokémon (Nothing is), but they made something good and different when it could have been something similar and blasé. It all comes down to Masuda’s ego. If he gets called on his shit, he just may step up.
@@brandonchavez9924 Well obviously I'm not as passionate of a pokemon fan as you, nor have I looked into this situation as deep as you. It's nice that you have this will to keep pushing for change. Edit: I see how this comment came off as spiteful and condescending in hindsight. I'm sorry about that. Yes, I did care enough about pokemon to watch reviews and comment and stuff. But frankly I'm not that hopeful about the future of these games, cause of the negative trend of the quality of these games. You're right in that this isn't a good mindset to have. If everyone thought like me, Game Freak would have no pressure to improve. In this manner, people who care enough to speak their disappointments with the game are "more passionate" than me. That's what I thought at least. The reason I said I haven't looked into the situations as deep as you was because you brought up a lot of things I didn't think about. To be honest, I haven't even played the games past the 5th generation--I only occasionally watch let's plays. You also brought up stuff like BOTW which I don't know much about other than it's a Zelda game. In hindsight, I see how what you've brought up doesn't require a ton of research to know. People who've played or follow these games would see how Nintendo treated these other games compared to Pokemon. I see how my wording was terrible and I came off as an asshole. Sorry about that.
I wont sugar-coat this: This Franchise is burning. And i genuinly dont get why Chibnal gets ore Criticism than Masuda, despite Chibnal ruining Doctor Who and Masuda doing Arsene on Pokemon.
Clean line art built of Gen 5's example could of done good. The animations may be cycled, but hell they gave more personality than any of the 3D models so far when it comes to idles.
Pokemon NEEDED to go 3D. However, Game Freak just aren't competent enough to make a good Pokemon game in 3D, at least not within their preferred biennial release strategy. Game Freak have made the same games for 30 years with just more Pokemon and different NPCs and have gotten away with it every time, whilst other companies have been innovating and changing formulas, Pokemon has remained stagnant and the development team as a result is stagnant. The development team are not accustomed to 3D design which is one reason why they've strictly stuck with handhelds and have slowly improved the graphics each generation. Now they've moved to home consoles, they are going to need to hire good animators, better designers, so on in order to move forward. There is no 3DS 2.0. Game Freak need to innovate for the first time in 30 years and that comes with changing culture. If they don't, they will become just like Activision and EA with their annual FIFAs where they release the same game over and over.
@@cider2384 I think X and Y were decent games and it was fine because they just made the jump. How ever SW/SH should have never been this lazy, the models were fine for the most part, and they clearly had animations to use. I hope gen IX will not be rushed.
@@h3nder The game looks terrible graphically for a Switch game. The only positives are the cinematic cut scenes but Game Freak don't make those, it's actually Creatures Inc. Game Freak need to hire better employees or simply recruit Bamdai Namco's batch of employees who made Pokken in order to collaborate on a blueprint mainline title that will actually not be thrown in a ditch. You won't get a good, proper 3D game (XY is not 3D, more like 2.5D) until Game Freak hires better employees or retrains their staff. They wouldn't have had this problem if Nintendo made another dedicated handheld but the Switch Lite proved that there will be no more DS line
The bar was already set from the previous generations. What SwSh did was like doing a pole vault, missing the jump, clotheslining yourself and snapping your neck upon impact with the ground.
PH G yes but it's funn/sad how people ignore that many of the issues were already here Gen 6/7. How the fuck does the lacklustre USUM have 87% on Metacritic from both critics and fans??? Overrated as fuck, USUM is a huge cashgrab and a wayyy worse 3rd game than BW2.
The storyline of the game is waaaaay too incredibly shitty to deserve an ok in my opinion. It is flat out terrible. Painful and disrespectful to the fans. The game as a whole was a huge deception.
@@luigissidekick861 yeah I saw it pinned just after lol Still, flat out terrible instead of bad imo. So lazily made to the point of being offensive to our intelligence
@@Vini-BR I wouldnt mind a mediocre story in a pokemon game, but what the fuck is this shit? We got rid of megas for dynamax? Literally the most uninspired gimmick I've ever seen
The stories of Pokemon games have never been amazing. Gen 5 was the only remotely good story. Everything else is just silly, but it still at least makes sense. This game feels like it was made by jaded old businessmen that don't know what made their earlier stuff so great, so they make shit up as they go and hope they make bank. Saddening.
Better idea for SwSh plot: So, the main idea is the same plot of rose setting up fake matches for Leon to win. However, Leon has no idea that these matches are faked and really thinks that he is the best trainer in the league. Rose is also secretly the leader of Team Yell, he intentionally uses them as blockades for stronger trainers in order to make the weaker trainers progress, he lets Piers be their “leader” which is why they help Marnie. The twist comes out when you and Marnie are at Spikemuth after you defeat the gym and you try to leave but, because you are a strong trainer, Rose orders Team Yell to lock you in. Neither you, Piers, or Marnie know what’s going on and they won’t listen to Piers. Then you have to explore more of Spikemuth making the city more than a giant hallway. You have to leave through an exit where there is no gate battling a bunch of Team Yell grunts on the way. Jumping to the champion battle, you are about to battle Leon but, knowing he’ll probably lose, Rose releases several dynamax Pokémon onto the field which postpones the championship match. This leaves Rose to figure out what to do tomorrow, and then he remembers Sonias study of the darkest day. He decides that, whatever it is, it’ll probably postpone at least one day and, that night, there is a power outage right before you go to dinner with Leon, and he isn’t showing up. He sends hop a text saying he’s at Rose tower and the same raid on Rose tower happens. After this however and when the cutscene at the end happens, he’s not talking about the demise of false in 1000 years, he’s talking about how it’s not worth Leon’s time and that Leon isn’t a real champion. The next morning, another huge power outage happens and you fight through the Pokémon league as usual until the end when Leon doesn’t show up. Until dark clouds form over Hammerlocke and Rose appears on the screen saying that he accidentally released eternity’s through the darkest day, not knowing the power he was dealing with. You go to slumbering Weald and get the sword or shield, go to hammerlocke, fight Rose, and go up to fight eternatus but, instead of seeing Leon catching eternatus, you see him on the ground knocked out. You fight eternatus alone while hop tends to his brothers injuries, eternatus eternamaxes and you both use the shield and sword. The legendary you chose joins your team for a short time to defeat eternamax eternatus and the other one helps Leon. You then fight eternatus alone with your legendary on your team. And then after this, Rose is arrested and the plot continues as normal. There are probably more ways to fix the plot but that’s what I had

one thing i can't stand that nobody mentions is how everyone is always smiling and acting way too happy. it feels super fake when i defeat a trainer and they're still beaming like they were before the match. the npcs should express more than one emotion... also i really hate how characters such as hop keep repeating their body language and gestures until you click to the next line of dialogue. the characters feel really robotic and bad. i was surprised you gave them an 'ok' rating. also couldn't agree more on the scaling issues. dynamax is awful, and seeing a 5 foot long wailord crushed my soul and was anyone bothered by that message after beating the game, "the galar region is yours to explore"? there's nothing to explore, stop acting like the game is rich with content and things to do. it isn't also eternatus looks terrible.. like an unfinished 3d model they forgot to add skin to
Finally someone mentions Eternatus..I know its a bad joke but I wheezed when I realized that the games are so bare bones, that the third Legensary is a skeleton.
I fucking hate how my own Gyarados looks almost the same height as me, or how small Charizard is. Even the character heights seem weird, I feel so tall yet short at the same time and maybe that’s just me, I get peeved off very easy with design. Also, I kind of like Eternatus’ design but I think it’s problem is that it’s so much like a ”skeleton” I don’t know what I’m staring at or how it even came to existence in the first place like what made this Pokémon? Honestly if Eternatus was in a different franchise or game it would’ve fit better depending on the game than something that’s supposed to be “cute or cool” like the Pokémon aesthetic. Eternatus looks so off against all the other Pokémon it’s terrible, but nonetheless I like Eternatus, though GF should’ve thought of a better design. How can they say they want all people to enjoy Pokémon with a legendary like this? How does their thought process even work?

Re: The reason the nimation is dated/clunky: A lot of the animations have unnecessary pauses as well- see Nessa’s pokeball throw for a great example. The animations feel segmented, where only one thing seems to be able to move at a time. That obvious style of animation where you can see the starts and ends, never fluidly transitioning, where every movement is modular, contributes to the slow, clunky feeling of every animation both on people and pokemon. This is the reason the HIGH QUALITY ANIMATION of Zamazenta(?) at the end of the game looks so bad. The walking is gridded, linearly sped, and the modular walking animation is not lined up with the rotation of the pokemon. As a BEGINNER in Maya animation, I know how hard animation is, but I also know that care was not put into the usage of the animations that were created,. There’s a lack of model animation and instead you see mostly model placement animation (translate location on XYZ planes), which is the easiest, quickest, and laziest way to “animate.” Also: As for the the infamous tree texture, if ANYONE had noticed and spent ONE MINUTE resizing the repeating texture to repeat more, it would look 100x better. This game was obviously rushed out. Contrasting the game you’re reviewing, you made an excellent and thorough review. Great comparisons to other Switch and pokemon games and usage of theories of art and gameplay. It’s obvious you care a lot about the pokemon series and the experience of video games in general! Thanks for the hard work you put in.
After this game...I don 't want a Gen 4 remake anymore, i'm sure they will just ruin the original game's experience and remove loved features, because of dumb reasons, just like they did with oras.
Honestly man this was a really great video, I have to admit it's made me really reassess how kind I was to Sword & Shield in my initial video about it back in November because of how many things you brought up that I neglected to mention that just kinda had me going "yeah, he's right..." Stuff like not getting previews of your clothing items when it'd been done fine in X/Y 5 years earlier, Game Freak's weird obsession with that one camera angle and especially the completely nonsensical nature of the story. Sad as the state of the franchise may seem atm, you did a great job with this - I'll honestly probably go and make a pinned comment on my own video addressing how my opinions on a few things have changed, LOL
Nah man the camera angle is no mystery, Gamefreak is practically only relying on nostalgia and their name to continue to sell games at this point so of course they would reuse it.

I still can't get over on just how graphically bad this game looks for a "big" first Party Switch title. Very flat lighting, N64 textures, reused 3DS models & tons of lazy, stiff & unfinished animations. I wasn't expecting PS4 graphics considering it's a Switch game, but I wasn't expecting the game to look *this* bad either, especially for an HD first party Nintendo game. You have other big first party Switch titles that looks graphically phenomenal such as Breath of the Wild, Super Mario Odyssey, Xenoblade Chronicles 2 & especially Luigi's Mansion 3, but then you see Pokemon Sword/Shield & wonder what the hell happen here?
It's because of the mindless defenders. They get away with it because of the mindless defenders who are brand loyalists. They don't care what it is, if it has the brand name on it, they buy it and defend it. And because of these brand loyalists, pokemon will firmly die. It was on a decline since X/Y when they deemed Steel "too OP" and made it so that those late game, hard to groom dragons were now fodder for some of the most common pokemon.
Sword and Shield left me absolutely heartbroken. I've been playing the games since the days of Red and Blue, and I've been finding myself playing other games, or older titles instead. It feels hollow and repetitive.

Pokémon Sword isn’t great. Here’s how I would have created it: MAIN STORY: You start in southern Galar in the town of Postwick. You are told to head to the Pokémon Lab to meet Professor Magnolia and receive your starter. You are given your starter by Sonia instead. She doesn’t really like being the unofficial professor. She likes battling, but she’s told constantly that she is bad at it. Hop wants to be like Leon, he admires him greatly. He challenges you to a battle. He congratulates you after you win, and you catch a train to Wyndon. (Wyndon is now in southern Galar, due to it now being much more like London) It’s the largest city in the game and home to the Pokémon Leauge’s HQ. Here you meet Rose. Who promptly invites you to lunch at one of the city’s many restaurants. (There are three restaurants and a luxury hotel in Wyndon that you can use.) He encourages you to join the gym challenge. You accept his invitation. You receive an endorsement from him. He tells you that you need eight badges to qualify for the Champion Cup. There are twelve gyms in galar. (You can do all twelve, but the final four will be HARD) Rose tells you can do the gyms in any order. Rose then gives you your Rotom phone with the Pokédex and map already I instaled on it. He then wishes you good luck on your gym challenge and leaves. You meet Hop who has been endorsed by Leon. You are now free to explore Wyndon and the towns surrounding it. (Some gyms are based on types while others, based on mechanics, this is to spice things up) You will meet Marnie and Bede. Bede will state that he has been endorsed by the Chairman and hints that he is his adopted son. You also say that you are endorsed by Rose. Desperate to prove that he is a better trainer than you, he battles you. (He was sheltered all his life and arrogantly believes that he is better than his fellow challengers) Bede shrugs off his loss and calls it bad luck. He refuses to admit that he lost. You meet Marnie who challenges you to a battle to train her Pokémon. She is shocked that she lost. She wonders why she lost. Marnie than continues train her team alone. You return to Wyndon where Hop Challenges you to your second battle. He wonders if he is strong enough to continue with his adventure you reassure him that he is and you head north. (There are towns that have little to no importance in the main story. However seaside allow you to travel between seaside towns via boat. This is important in the post game) Your train is delayed in a town with a gym. It’s run down and has seen better days. Marnie tells you that this is her home town. She battles you before telling you that living here is not easy. You beat the gym leader. Before you can leave, Leon congratulates you and Hop on the progress you’ve made. You head north and eventually end up in the galar equivalent of Edinburgh. Rose calls you and tells you to meet him in the city. You meet him where he tells you that he is surprised that you passed every gym on your first try, and he tells you that you are the talk of Galar.( The game ignores it when you loose, even to Leon, so we might as well indulge in your “win” streak :D)Bede interrupts your conversation to tell him of his achievements. Rose is impressed l, but continues talking to you. Bede, annoyed storms out. Rose tells you that you are going to be a great trainer when you complete the gym challenge and that you should compete in the champion’s cup. Who knows? Maybe you’ll beat Leon? After you leave Bede challenges you to a battle. He is starting to wonder if he is not as good as he thinks he is. You beat another gym before Marnie starts to provide you with more details of her upbringing and why she’s a lone wolf. At the end she calls you her rival and that that’s the first time she’s called anyone that. She is starting to realize that going solo isn’t always the best move. You complete another two gyms when Bede tells you that he and you should battle to practice for the champion’s cup. You head to Wyndon ready for what awaits you. You spend the last few days before the championship with Hop and Sonia. He is nervous he wants to prove himself and become someone as strong as Leon. The day before the tournament, Sonia wants to tell you that she was once a Pokémon Trainer. She was skilled enough to battle Leon. She lost, badly. She tells you to be careful. You start the championship by battling Bede. (Complete with remix of his theme) After That you battle Marnie, and finally, Hop. This match is big. Hop wants to prove himself and you want to challenge Leon. Hop looses and takes extremely personally. You challenge Leon. He is confident that he will beat you. You win shocking both Leon and Rose. The post game now starts. You begin it with a normal day. Everything is great. Hop visits to congratulate you. You have done it! You are now champion! Except... (Behind the scenes Rose is confused. Why didn’t Leon crush you? It was set up so that the match of the century would still end with his prized champion victorious. Why? It was clockwork? He needs to something about it) POST GAME You enter a tournament. Something is not right. It’s almost as if it’s... rigged. (Hint)You win and ask Rose (You still trust him) He states that’s it’s just as it’s always been. You head home, you decide to talk to Sonia and ask about what really happened during the championship match. She states that all of her Pokémon went down one by one. She also remembers that Leon wasn’t really concentrating during the battle. People assumed that she was a weak Pokémon trainer and she was forced to retire. Even Magnolia thought she was weak. She however has gotten into being the professor. You are beginning to question the motives of Rose. You trust him. He endorsed you. You head to Wyndon again and meet... Looker! He was assigned to investigate the corruption is Galar’s Pokémon League. He decides to let you help with his investigation. You meet him in his current office. (This is the post game story: investigating the Pokémon Leauge) He wants you to participate in another tournament. He is trying to determine how if they are trying to rig the tournament against you. You participate in the tournament. Looker determines that there was something shady about the tournament. He decides to investigate further. You are his partner now. He is suspicious of the league. He wonders why the league might be rigging matches. Rose calls you. He wants to discuss possible sponsors. Looker says he will investigate further. After the meeting Looker says that he found a possible lead, a match between Sonia and Leon. The match was so ridiculously one-sided that it couldn’t have been due to a sheer difference in skill. Sonia was a good trainer up until the. ,but this match completely ruined her career. She could have been great. You and Looker eventually realize the scope of it. Rose chose Leon because he was loyal. He wanted Leon to stay as the champion forever. He wanted to try and force a “Match of the Century” by putting his adopted son into prestigious trainer schools. He never developed a good relationship with his adopted son and Bede was desperate for his attention. Bede was supposed to challenge Leon and loose, but then you came along. He knew you had talent and if he could get you to trust him than everything would go smoothly. His plan backfired and now he had a champion who would not function as his puppet. You confront Leon and Rose. Hop is with you as well as Sonia.. You fight one last battle with Rose. (This is the final battle of the post game so he’s going to be over leveled) Hop feels betrayed so he cuts all ties with Leon. He wanted to like the unbeatable Leon, but he was a fraud. You were also betrayed by Rose. You were just a pawn to him. Both Leon and Rose are arrested and the post game ends. BONUS CONTENT You are now able to catch a ferry to the galar equivalent to Northern Ireland. It features a city (Belfast) with the Battle Castle, Battle Buffet Style Restaurant, and a MASSIVE Wild Area outside. This will feature green rolling hills, marshes, a large lake, forests, mountains you can scale, a small dessert valley (maybe), and the ruins of castles, houses and other medieval structures, dynamic weather, and lots of raid dens and Pokémon. (STORY WORKS BEST IF PAIRED WITH VOICE ACTING AND HALF DECENT ANIMATIONS) Thank you for reading this entire thing! (If you did). Game Freak is inclined to sit back and rush out a Pokémon game every year for the holiday season. As a result, the games are not very fun to play. I would have loved it if the game was like this. However sword is a shallow bland experience from the highest grossing media franchise. There is no excuse for it’s lack of content or quality. Other franchises like Mario or The Legend Of Zelda take their time to leave their games in the oven most of time. Pokémon has always been the same experience which is fine if you are playing it for the first time, but you’ll eventually get tired of it. My thumbs hurt
DLC (Price: $30) You head to kalos. (Sword and Shield takes place after the events of X and Y) You arrive in kalos. You start to collect the eight badges in kalos (Kalos would be rebuilt from the ground up to feel at home on the switch) You end the campaign by facing off with the X and Y protagonist. They will have a fully competitive team with fantastic AI, perfect stats, natures, abilities, and held items to complement their Pokémon. (You will probably loose the first time you face them, all of their Pokémon are Level 100. So no blasting through them) POST GAME: You can participate in the Pokémon world tournament. You can head to the protagonists home town where they will talk to you for the first time. You can battle them once every day. You can battle other people with mega evolved Pokémon. The world tournament returns with more people than ever. Pokemon showcase will be added! (Pokemon showcases will function like contests. Tierno will be your rival for that. They opened it up so that everyone can participate) You can explore southern kalos more than you could in X and Y with two new towns and Kilode city would be greatly expanded to be exactly like the battle resort with multiple facilities. You can battle Serina or Calem, they will reminisce on their journey with the protagonist. (Trevor will now be the professor’s assistant. Shauna will roam and appear randomly in cities and cafes) I’ve changed my opinion on dynamaixng. It will just be replaced by mega evolution. Dynamxing is just a lazy combination between mega evolution and z-moves. Mega evolution was better. So I would remove dynamxing.
"No voice acting" Meanwhile, Fire Emblem 3 Houses has characters fully voiced, and came out the same year on the same system. So what's Pokemon's excuse?
3 houses paid for some of the best dubbing voice actors in the business and overlaps with other respected JRPGs like Persona, whereas pokemon does not have to try to sell copies. Fire Emblem and persona are trying to expand their fanbases whereas pokemon is not
So, I haven't played any Fire emblem games, but I believe that who made them take their time to make them good. The problem with game freak is the 1 year gap between each game. SwSh had a good premise, but they were clearly rushed and so they turned out really really bad
I remember someone saying. And I quote "I'm pretty sure they made Sword and Shield purposely disappointing so they can blow everyone away with the next games."
I'm not even waiting for Sinnoh Remakes anymore. Zero expectations about the franchise. I literally started Heart Gold from scratch last week and I'm having a blast.
Sparkle Pawz I hope it’s true because their excuses of deleting most of the Pokémon and Mega Evolutions are pathetic and a bunch of lies. They can’t make anymore excuses for the next games.

One thing that I don’t think any reviewer has mentioned about this game, is the lack of hall of fame. You can hear the theme being present throughout the game, but it never uses it for its original purpose. Why?
I thought Marnie wanted to bring more publicity and tourists to her hometown of Spikemuth because they don't have a Power Spot to Dynamax like the other Gyms do. And what better way to get tourism moving and breathe fresh air into her hometown, as well as give back to her supportive big brother, Piers, and the rest of her supporters than become famous? And how much more famous can you get than being The Champion of Galar? Not saying she's particularly interesting, and mostly gets by as a fan favorite character by her design and cute goth personality (what little there might be), but I wouldn't say she isn't motivated by anything. Otherwise, yeah, she's still the weakest of the three rivals, unfortunately.
@@getthegoons I wont sugar-coat this: This Franchise is burning. And i genuinly dont get why Chibnal gets ore Criticism than Masuda, despite Chibnal ruining Doctor Who and Masuda doing Arsene on Pokemon.
I've said this before in other related SwSh videos, but I think there's something to really be addressed with "Accessibility" and the idea of making something too hard will drive away a younger audience: The worst thing you can do to a kid is treat them like one. Take into account the following: Kids get woken up by their parents, dressed by them, told what they're eating for breakfast, and get told to go to school 5 days out of the week. There, they're marched around in lines, told what to do, when they're going to do it, what they can't do or can't learn, how to play on the playground, how to act, how to dress, and how to learn. All this his accompanied by an alarm that dictates the time to switch on and off each and every regimented subject. Then, look at the ways that kids in the modern era (And Hell, even my era) "go to work", and then tell me: Why the fuck do they want to spend their free time being told what to do, and how they're going to do it? Why do you think games like Fortnite and CoD Warzone are so popular? Neither of those games tell you how you're going to do stuff. They tell you what you need to do, and let you put two and two together to surprise you with the results. Kids aren't idiots. We all figured out an "inaccessible" Pokemon when we all were kids, and even with his convoluted EV and IV mechanics that it never explains at all, we got through the games just fine and grew to love them. Why does Gamefreak think it needs to fix something that isn't broken?
More importantly it creates traffic. Nobody bothers watching swsh twitch streams excessively and there is little reason to cooperate apart from the minimal interaction of evolving certain pokemon like your guts conkeldurr with egg moves. One could even argue that certain pokemon or items should be extremely hard to obtain but this plays into a pokemon mmo that we are unlikely to ever get our hands on.
I hate with all my heart how Pokemon Master looks way better than Sword and Shield. you can see how that game has way more dedication, attention and love. i can't even tolerate how all those iconic characters are used in that awsome way IN A MOBILE GAME instead of a main game. how awsome would it be if just one of them appeard on Sword and Shield? To battle other champions like in past games but NO. that's the thing that hurts the most. A mobile game looks, feels and plays better then a main game.
Wouldn't surprise me if they intentionally put more effort into Pokémon Masters just so they can later justify and drop the bombshell news that they'll shift their focus to mobile games in the future. After all, if Masters and Pokémon Go performed better, surely the fanbase wants those kinds of games more, right? No need to put time, money, and effort into next-gen graphics, open world exploration, better-written storylines, and innovative gameplay improvements. Less work for more money, what more could a company want?
Pokemon masters has voice acting and better models as well. I dont even need “realistic” Pokémon. Just as simple as the style of Pokémon masters, and they failed to do that.
Being a lifelong fan, it was definitely weird playing a Pokémon game for the first time and just not having fun. Not bored, but not having fun. Other games had flaws, but they were still good overall imo. Worst part is we will most likely never get another good Pokémon game again.
@blkxbr Oras was well made, it was pretty much the exact same game with better graphics and a more flashed out story. The one thing that bothered me was that they no longer had the small puzzles in the caves. You should be reminded that that game was running on the 3DS and not the switch.
@@maythesciencebewithyou I would say the game is good but it doesn't met the standard that the previous gen 1 2 remake set there are a few old feature that was remove for stupid reason and new feature that just remove the difficulty

Don't forget Monster Hunter either. They completely overhauled the graphics, introduced voice acting, overhauled AI, revolutionized the combat, created actual breathing ecosystems... The list goes on. All around amazing effort to make the best possible Monster Hunter game.
That part at about 13:34 ish if you were to watch the "slower" version "in game cutscene" closely you'll notice that LEON throws an ULTRABALL and then the next part of the cutscene is him having THROWN a POKEBALL. I'm sure no one cared and your welcome.....

In japan they have mangaka competitions where they compete in groups. Each person of a group designs and writes a single page in a predeterminded order and completely independently from the others and at the end they put the pages together to check which group made the best/most coherent or even funny one. This is exactly how this feels: a bunch of "writers" doing single pages of "story" and garbling it together...
I wish the dogs represented more than just two dudes who used them to do something. Like in BW they represented Truth and Ideals, and N specifically sought one out for himself and one for you so he could test his truth against your ideals. It wasn't just big monster it was a philosophical debate. He wanted you to try to show him if your ideals where stronger than his and it manifests in a Pokemon battle. Xerneas is life, Yvetal is death. The ultimate weapon wiped out a bunch of people and revived Az's Flowette, which then left him in shame. They're basically a representation of Az's sin and mistake, and Lysander repeating it. Solgeo and Lunala are about what's her face growing up. And Zacian and Zamenzenta are... A sword and a shield to fight a monster that never gets mentioned until it shows up. Would it really be that hard to show the tapestries of the heroes fighting a monster with a sword and shield, with the sword representing necessary violence and the shield being idk, temperance and patience? The sword one (I can't even remember which is which anymore) could stay pretty much exactly the same and the shield one would probably have to have it's signature move changed to a status move. But even this change is way better IMO. Gives the pokemon a lore purpose, foreshadows Eternatus (way more that "THE DAHKEHST DAH" every other town).

Um the 3ds games were better even if a lot of code and graphical assets were ported over. I'm not gonna go deep into defending them because they did have plenty of faults, but I will say gen 6 was my favorite for post game mechanics. It gives you a chance to get into competitive without spending 60 hours just preparing a single mon. Yeah Showdown exists but it's plenty flawed as well.
What really hurts is watching how GameFreak crushed our dreams of having a main Pokemon Game on a home console by giving us this. The whole world seems very empty, it feels sad to walk on a route full of grass, the same 5 pokemon all around and like 2 trees. They could care less about the "Adventure", everything is combat, Pokemon games are never going to be the same again, we will never get games like before, they aren't "testing the waters" they are evolving for a new generation of kids
Right? When I heard botw was coming out as an open world, I was worried that there would be a lot of empty spaces. But it was amazing and beautiful, great graphics, scenery, and everything had something to explore. The mokoblins would sleep, dance, and play, which was awesome to find. So I expected the same level of effort and love in sword and shield. Spent $60 man for an unfinished empty spaced world
Gegiù Xeno Archer was fine all things considered. They couldn’t have Giovanni in GSC due to the events of Gen 1, so it was interesting to have a new threat trying to revive Team Rocket but ultimately failing. Archie and Maxie were also interesting because they actually accomplished their goal (the only evil team to do so) but realized that it wasn’t what they really wanted
@@IceBlueLugia _Archer is still quite disappoiting since you only have to fight him once and then he disappears._ _He had like 10 minutes of screen time._
@@craidsaber5986 We get it. You'd rather play Smash Bros. As a game in general, it's LEAGUES better than SwSh. But it isn't a suitable replacement for Pokemon, mostly because it's not in the same genre and features very different gameplay, which is why people are sticking with the DS and 3DS titles. Because they offer a similar experience but are overall MUCH better than where Pokemon is today. Some people are turning towards Digimon, some towards Tem Tem. Others towards Shin Megami Tensei/Persona. And even more towards past Pokemon titles. Because they want a turn-based monster-collecting fix because Smash cannot do that. It's made for an entirely different purpose. People who want a fix for platform fighters featuring all their favorite characters.
“While Leon is busy playing the game for you,” omfg. I would have LOVED going on adventures with Leon, possibly having him follow me to investigate whatever he investigates when he disappears off screen. It would have been awesome.
I find it baffling that people are still trying to defend these games. Sword and Shield clearly shown that Pokemon has become one of the most stagnant Nintendo franchises.
In my heart I want to defend it because of how emotionally attached I am to the series, I think that's true for an enormous part of the fanbase too. We're all so deeply attached to these games that a lot of people just cant bring themselves to turn and so they still defend gamefreak tooth and nail. I can admit when I'm wrong, and theres a ton wrong with these games. I will not, however, join the majority of the comments on every piece of pokemon media at the moment and call gamefreak irredeemable trash that will never make another good game. I still have hope they'll make another good pokemon game someday, and I'll keep that hope even if it's silly. I think if more fans admitted that and adopted the same "disappointed, not angry" mindset, maybe things would change. it's really, really heartbreaking for us though.
@@ThisCatIsBored I mean if TPC gave Gamefreak more time to develop the final product instead of pushing for yearly releases this could have been avoided
@@TSPH1992 That's true. I also believe that way more of the development team was comprised of newcomers than we were led to believe. I really cant believe that this poor of a pokemon experience could have been made with a team of experienced pokemon staff members on board, it feels like the team that developed it was kind of unfamiliar/uncomfortable with the territory, and thusly made a very lacking and "safe" game.
It’s not even stagnant; it’s actively regressing. Gamefreak keeps purposefully making the games easier, railroading the player with more unskippable cutscenes, keep randomly removing beloved features while putting in new ones that nobody asked for, and have finally started to cut beloved Pokémon out of the game entirely. I refuse to believe that the most popular franchise in the world is an underdog indie game studio struggling to create a large game with limited resources. They’re just creatively bankrupt and infuriatingly content to treat a home console release like a 3DS Title.
I wouldn't give the story even "bad". It's absolutely terrible even on pokemon standards. Feels like it was written by a 5-year-old wanting to show "cool" things with nothing actually being cool and nothing making sense. Pokemon has never had good stories but my God I'd rather have no story at all than this crap. And before people ridicule me for not even wanting a story, gen 1 & 2 barely had any real story and those games were still pretty excellent.
@@yiangaruga4928 The stories in every Pokémon were never really great but at least they made somehow sense in their own way. I never liked the story of Pokémon games but this time I experienced a story that was even worse than season 8 of Game of Thrones. Nothing made sense and the characters were so dull, boring and stupid with no depth or any comprehensive intentions. On top of that the poor graphics and aNimAtIoNS underlined this dumpster fire of a story. The Gameplay has changed... in a negative way. Yes, there were some quality of life changes but they couldn't cover the fact that many many beloved features were cut for unbalanced or unfinished gimmicks no one asked for or wanted.
I have a question: Is there a reason for why Pokemon Games look worse than every other indie game? There a small companies bringing out unknown games with much better graphics and animations. I dont want Pokemon to be realistic for sure, but i want it to be sharp and smooth. Where do they use their budget? Pokemon is the BIGGEST FRANCHISE IN THE WORLD. How does it come that their games look so bad? Shouldnt they have tons of money? Are the employees overpaid? Are the heads of Pokemon (bosses and CEOs) spending their billions of dollars? Where does all the money go?? I really want to understand it. Can someone please please explain it to me?
Idiot Loser i know, im one of those people. Still I want to know where they invest the money in. Why exactly Pokemon? Every other game developer of successful franchises could do the same, but it’s only Pokemon looking that bad
@@TheLPHome Why spend more money and effort when the public will eat up what you are already serving. Remember BOTW came of the back of the last home console zelda being a disappointment. Pokémon has never been unsuccessful. @Daniel Shah [Student] just saying that the pokemon animations are so stiff and lifeless that even if you switch up the models it doesn't look weird because every animation has 0 character And yes seeing pyroball 34 times is not changing my mind its just one move on one pokemon
@Daniel Shah [Student] dude if most moves had a shred of personality in them they would look out of place on different models, take for example that new fox pokemon, after an attack it brushes its tail, see thats personality it tells how that pokemon acts and its attitude. If the rest 97% of animation are just all the same raise an arm and do a boring girl slap or just stay in place make an angry face and vibrate its just lifeless and repetitive. Make them do crazy things like pyro ball, they are already recycling every past animation they just need to do new ones. Pokedex entry mean nothing if every single pokemon is just always doing the same action
@Daniel Shah [Student] all right dude pokemon is in its best state animation wise, no changes needed, it looks gorgeus and the best it could be I was wrong from the start
I'm leaving because its pointless, I want better aninations to strive for a better more quality game if you don't want that and are ok with the shit show that is sword and shield and the animations they have been recycling for 6 years there is nothing much I can do about that sorry

I rarely care about graphics, this gen was no different, what pissed me off though, was that they claimed they were killing graphics to make the game "play" better. Gale of darkness, a game made a decade ago, on a gamecube system, is leagues better in animation, and even with no voice acting, was ten times better than pokemon sw/sh. Games from decades ago, had vastly better stories, with no voice acting. There is no excuse for this game. They had everything they needed to make this game work, they had templates to work with from the gamecube era, and they still did nothing with it. It's sad really.
What pissed me off is that this game barely has any story. It's clear as day that from a certain point onwards that they didn't have the time to implement many things. There is too much missing. They get rid of good features for the sake of bad ones.

Botw With Dlc content: A 50 hours story with a pretty good story, 20 voices scenes to find thought one of the biggest map Nintendo ever main, 5 full dungeons with 5 epic bosses, 136 shrines, 900 Koroks to find all over the map, an entire photograph campaign, lots of mini bosses, 90 side quests and a lot of costumes. And to top it of, 1 full 45 shrines challenge which is really hard and a full campaign based on the 4 main dungeons. Pokemon Sw/Sh with dlc content: A 15 hours journey on a fairly dissapointing map with the wild area which is pretty bland, half the pokedex cut, and mediocre story, really bad animations for a switch game. A really short dlc story that only had things that should have been in the main game, 100 returning Pokémon that should already be there, a better wild area, but clearly not even close to the beautiful MASSIVE map of Botw. A 151 diggets campaign which are basicaly Koroks without the puzzles and well hidden. And to top it of, a 3 mill+ watts project which is bad and only exist to make the game longer.
Til the last city and it at least show it taking off with you in it. Then black screen and that it
When it cut to black I burst out laughing, it was unfathomably bad
Tbh this barely matters in comparison to all the other points. This is just a nitpick
Probably just to avoid people who would complain that the fly animation takes too long. Considering how often people fly after beating the story, it would probably be annoying after a while.

damn, I haven't heard that name in years.
It certainly made Pier's concert memorable I'll give it that.
If they were to remaster GS in the SwSh “artstyle” imagine just dead air, and then you see the dialouge bar and it says

If you get rid of the npc and pokemon models, it looks like Mabinogi.
It looks like something that manipulates its animations, NPCs etc. looks something to the detail of what was possible and done on the ps 2.
I mean it looks sightly better than monster hunter on the ps2
10 years ago we also had Dead Rising 2, a Xbox 360/PS3 game which handles hundreds of zombies on screen, and looks way better than Sword and Shield in every conceivable level.

It sucks

"Oh don't worry X and Y was just them testing the waters for the 3DS hardware"

"Oh don't worry Sword and Shield was just them testing the Switch hardware"
"Oh don't worry Sword and Shield DLC's are just them testing how well they can make DLC"
These are all excuses someone I know has made ever since X and Y was released, the game that was so unoptimized it suffered from frame drops, because they wanted to "Future Proof" the Pokemon models for future games, the same models that seem to have disappeared when Sword and Shield was in development, only for remarkably similar ones to appear come launch, like how funny is it that they even modeled the joints in Gyarados's whiskers the exact same way they looked on the 3DS?
EDIT: Felt I should give y'all an update, today (One day after Paid DLC #1 came out) they started talking about how great the GTS system is, even though it's literally the same thing that was free every other game. "It's only 12 bucks a year!" Yeah it was 0 bucks a year for past games.
We also know the Cutscene excuse is bullshit because X/Y did it first, and ORAS practically perfected it.
I hate the 3d models. Lifeless and fail to convey the Pokemon's personality

Most of the Pokémon along with all Mega evolutions shouldn’t have been cut for all of these bullshit excuses.

Remember when everyone overbashed gen5 for no valid reason? Little did people knew it was the last time a Pokemon game would be great.
We had it good back then..
Yyyyyyup. At least Gen 5 hit different.
They put effort in that game you can tell
Gen 5 was legit. Especially the story. It was underappreciated for its time.
BW2 are the best main games in the whole franchise

That's just my opinion though
stinky Honestly, I love gen V but the Pokémon designs were one of the weaker attributes
Besides charizard being a main protagonist's pokemon, getting an special form and some galarian pokemon, there wasn't even that much nostalgia pandering on this generation and they still sold so much

This could probably be polished more, but that's what came to my mind.
damn, that's a decent plot for something that isn't quite polished yet.
You should upload a video detailing this plot and some more once you polish it enough. Maybe you could even improve on the post game.
Game Freak should've hired you to make the story
THIS IS EXACTLY THE TYPE OF STORY THAT WE NEED
Very long for me reading
My biggest problem with the game was the fact that the player isn't even an active participant in the main story. All the stuff involving the plot happens off screen until the final battles. Then there is the "Rival". I didn't like him. He didn't feel like an actual rival since he was consistently beaten by both the player and the other trainers but still somehow managed to defeat the gym leaders. Bede felt like more of a rival and even had a character arc while our actual one didn't.
Hop bede and marnie were all rivals. So there is no "actual" rival
At least Bianca and Cheren had character.
@@Jibboe0214 I have to disagree that Hop isn't memorable, though I agree he has all the shades of the friendly rival arcs. Unlike all the nonGen5 friendly rivals, his development is definitely written and shown better than the rest of them.

Alvin
Yours is a bad mentality to have.
Alvin
Apart from sarcasm not translating well over text, there was nothing even remotely sarcastic sounding in your comment.

I honestly wouldn't mind if Pokemon never went 3D.
Clean line art built of Gen 5's example could of done good. The animations may be cycled, but hell they gave more personality than any of the 3D models so far when it comes to idles.
@@Naruku2121 I love gen 5 as a whole but the ending of B/W which was just weird and seemed rushed.

@@marz8386 tbf, while SM were real handholdy with cutscenes, the story itself was pretty good for a pokemon game.

Pokémon Sword isn’t great. Here’s how I would have created it:
MAIN STORY:
You start in southern Galar in the town of Postwick.
He needs to something about it)
POST GAME
You enter a tournament.
BONUS CONTENT
You are now able to catch a ferry to the galar equivalent to Northern Ireland.
(STORY WORKS BEST IF PAIRED WITH VOICE ACTING AND HALF DECENT ANIMATIONS)
Thank you for reading this entire thing!

You head to kalos. So no blasting through them)
POST GAME:
You can participate in the Pokémon world tournament. Shauna will roam and appear randomly in cities and cafes)
I’ve changed my opinion on dynamaixng. It will just be replaced by mega evolution. Dynamxing is just a lazy combination between mega evolution and z-moves. Mega evolution was better. So I would remove dynamxing.

"No voice acting"
Meanwhile, Fire Emblem 3 Houses has characters fully voiced, and came out the same year on the same system. So what's Pokemon's excuse?
Dragonquest 11 as well well the remaster
My guess? Gamefreak being either lazy, cheap, or both.
3 houses paid for some of the best dubbing voice actors in the business and overlaps with other respected JRPGs like Persona, whereas pokemon does not have to try to sell copies. Fire Emblem and persona are trying to expand their fanbases whereas pokemon is not
Bootlickers/apologists will say that's too hard for Game Freak/TPC and we should be grateful for the awkward cutscenes.
So, I haven't played any Fire emblem games, but I believe that who made them take their time to make them good. The problem with game freak is the 1 year gap between each game.

This Franchise is burning.
And i genuinly dont get why Chibnal gets ore Criticism than Masuda,
despite Chibnal ruining Doctor Who
and Masuda doing Arsene on Pokemon.
I've said this before in other related SwSh videos, but I think there's something to really be addressed with "Accessibility" and the idea of making something too hard will drive away a younger audience:
The worst thing you can do to a kid is treat them like one.
Then, look at the ways that kids in the modern era (And Hell, even my era) "go to work", and then tell me:
Why the fuck do they want to spend their free time being told what to do, and how they're going to do it?
Why do you think games like Fortnite and CoD Warzone are so popular? Neither of those games tell you how you're going to do stuff. They tell you what you need to do, and let you put two and two together to surprise you with the results. Kids aren't idiots. We all figured out an "inaccessible" Pokemon when we all were kids, and even with his convoluted EV and IV mechanics that it never explains at all, we got through the games just fine and grew to love them. Why does Gamefreak think it needs to fix something that isn't broken?
THANK YOU

Hell yea bro you tell em
I 100% agree!
@@kangtheguardian1214 Nintendo would never allow it since Pokemon, even in it's poor state, is a system seller.

The ratings of all in the video criticized aspects of the game:
Story: bad
Characters: ok
Music: good
Gameplay: bad
Online: terrible
The games suck
absolutely true
@@donathan2933 I simply summed up the entire video
@@forfuchsake2254 heres a quick way to sum of the majority of the Pokemon fanbase: Blind and stupid
Simple: people are gonna buy their games no matter what, so they can be as lazy as they want when making the games
Idiot Loser i know, im one of those people. Still I want to know where they invest the money in. Why exactly Pokemon? Every other game developer of successful franchises could do the same, but it’s only Pokemon looking that bad
@@TheLPHome that I can't answer.
@@TheLPHome Why spend more money and effort when the public will eat up what you are already serving. Remember BOTW came of the back of the last home console zelda being a disappointment. Pokémon has never been unsuccessful. Also, just look at how easy marketing is for them, game sites and social media goes crazy making memes about the new Pokemon literal minutes after they are revealed. The money goes into the pockets of the C-suite and shareholders. Pure profit.
@@saniakshay12 Makes sense but is very sad at the same time. Thank you
The Battle Timer was a welcome addition with a TERRIBLE implementation. Being trapped in a game forever because some player played an near unbreakable stall team was unfun. But the timer is so amateurish it hurts..
Yeah I really love fighting my friends stall team for 20 minutes and then losing because he has more Pokemon left. ):
If you could turn it off it wouldn't. Be a problem
When pokemon animations have so little character and are so little effort that if you change the pokemon model they still fit in
@Daniel Shah [Student] just saying that the pokemon animations are so stiff and lifeless that even if you switch up the models it doesn't look weird because every animation has 0 character
And yes seeing pyroball 34 times is not changing my mind its just one move on one pokemon

Game Freak: We will re-use models from the 3ds and still refuse to bring back a large amount of Pokemon from the 3ds where they have their movesets, models and everything else laid out for us.
And then tell the public that the reason we’re not importing half the Pokémon is because we’re not re-using them! Genius!

They get rid of good features for the sake of bad ones.
exactly! maybe they were blocky and stuff, but i'll bring up a known example. skarmory goddamn flaps. what does it do in newer games? it disrespects gravity
@@dorazlatar2553 this. If they were doing the colloseum route, and making true animations for every pokemon, and then i could see them cutting the dex till animations were complete, but this is 80% ported pokemon, with terrible everything, in comparison to a 2006 gamecube game that had more care than their new switch port. Hell, they could have just asked genius sorority to give them the rigging models, from Battle revolution, and saved a ton of time from that alone.
@@vla1ne What's tragic to me is that Genius Sonority's devs apparently haven't really been available to Nintendo/TPC/Game Freak for this entire console gen, as (iirc) they returned to Square Enix to continue developing Dragon Quest games (the series that they worked on before developing Pokemon Colosseum/XD/BattleRevo)
@@TurboPikachu They could have at least asked for the rights to use the rigging data for hteir new game. but nope. we got this. and the worst part is you see some new special animations, when a normal pokemon attack dynamax ones, that is what they wasted time on. it sucks.
