One of the best interviews I’ve ever seen. Pete always does a great job of asking questions, then letting his guest talk without interrupting them. I’ve always been a movie lover, but never got into horror films. I finally started watching Monsters Den a number of months ago and am hooked on it, so I need to start watching some of the films being discussed. Chris, your passion and the work you have put in is phenomenal. It’s a pleasure just to hear you talk about it.
This episode was just too short. I could listen to you two talk for HOURS. If Alo gets Hudson Horror back up and running I will travel from CA to be there!
Great show. I was a projectionist for about 10 years. We didn't have the platter system, but giant reels, so I still had to splice the reels together. Films that were longer than 2 hrs were a pain as I had use 2 reels and find a convenient point in the film for an interval. To this day I have never seen Titanic, but know it starts sinking at the end of Reel 4. The Exorcist was one of the many films I have shown.
Finally got around to watching this and have to say this was a really great interview. My favorite quote “my wife shit out 2 kids, so I’m not allowed to see slayer anymore” 😂 💀
Man, I could listen to Chris talk all night. Actually Pete, yourself and Ryan as well. You got a star with Chris though. Incredible wit. I live in Kentucky but I would love to attend a show.
You have to love Chris's passion for his Horror shows , it's always a joy to listen to him talking about his love of his favourite movies . Essential viewing , '
Kudos to Chris Alo on his dedication, time, money and energy into the Horror genre. I grew up in the 50's watching Shock Theater in Chicago and buying every monster book that I could get my hands on. I still have an old Magnajector! Your wife has to be a special person too! Congrats to Pete for having this episode of Monsters Den enlightening us all to Chris's super effort.
Such a great episode Pete. Anytime The King is on is great and to hear the history of his show was great. It was also a joy to have a throwback to just you and King. King Alo continues to impress me with his movie knowledge and his passion. Thanks as always Pete for all you do for us SOT fans. We appreciate you. SOT IS THE BEST CHANNEL ON RUclips.
The Hudson Horror Show sounds like a blast. Would love to go sometimes of course, though it's a bit of a travel to get there. We've a great local horror movie festival called Ramaskrik close to where I live in Norway that I attend yearly, which is a blast. Horror in the cinema's just the best.
I went to a double feature that Chris ran at the Alamo in Yonkers a few years ago. Silver Bullet and Fright Night Part 2. Awesome time. Didn’t realize Chris was the same guy until it was mentioned on here one day. Hope Chris brings it back one of these days. 🤘🏼🧔🏻♂️ Edit: oh wow Tad! I used to email back and forth with him back in the day. Really nice guy as well. Bought a World Circus shirt from him and he threw in an autographed promo photo of Toxik from back in the day just because he knew I was a fan. Awesome guy. 🤘🏼🧔🏻♂️
Absolutely fascinating. One of the things I love about horror cons is the community you feel with other horror fans and while I have never been to a horror film festival it sounds like the same kind of thing. I wish we had something like this near where I live.
This is fantastic. I had very much been wanting to know the history of Hudson Horror, but also the great Chris Alo. This is detailed insight into the former, but also a peek at the latter.
Really cool conversation, super interesting learning the history of this. Hope Alo is able to do it again in the future. He has quite the passion for it 🤘🏻
Youre the man, Alo. Youre passion is infectious. I hope you are able to put on another Hudson Horror Show someday. The world needs your inspired brand of entertainment and fun. Thanks Pete for making the Monsters Den! Its one of the few distractions that completely takes me away from worries, every week. Great episode. Id pay to come watch a movie with Chris & Pete. Maybe that could be a business opportunity. Personal Monster's Den experiences. Id drop whatever you asked. Cheers!
Good to hear about Chris' Hudson Horror Show Experience! I'm a filmmaker and I write/produce mostly short comedy independents but the last short I did was sci-fi with some horror elements. Would love to submit if you ever get going again. Its good to hear you have such a solid and respected rep for horror in the area. Best of luck!
Chris needs to bring this festival back showing all those great drive in trash classics. It would bring back great memories of going to see all those great classics at the grindhouse theatres in times square back in the day
Chris you mentioned Indiana. The city I live in used to have 2 drive-in theaters. The one on the Northside of town had what they called “Dusk Till Dawn”. I think it was just once a year I can’t remember, but those were fun. Played B rated maybe even C rated horror. Not your big name horror movies. Right up your alley. I miss the drive-ins. Both are closed down now. I don’t know if you have any drive-ins in your area or if it would be feasible or not but that would be an idea for those Covid restrictions and people that are still scared. I mean they are in there own vehicle or sitting on lawn chairs outside there vehicles. Just a thought. BRING BACK DRIVE-INS!!! Drive-Ins were awesome. The wife and I would take kids and get a pizza or bucket of KFC lawn chairs, blanket if need be. Better than sitting inside a theatre. Plus sometimes the wife and I would go for date night without kids. We’d pretend we were silverware. Big spoon little spoon. Had a Blazer then. Great show
One of my favorite little HH memories was the HS kid who had his mom drive him down from upstate NY (past Albany I think). And on one of the shows we were sold out and the poor look on his face, we found a way to get him in.
Kudos to your wife, Dense. Your slogan should be: "Anything worth doing, is worth doing right." Great stories, and if you put your "olds" mind to it, I'm sure you can come up some crazy one. Bless your friends and wife who go out of their way to help you.
Sorry you had to come here to Indiana for a bust. I would ABSOLUTLEY travel to the area with enough notice to go to one of these!! I would also love to see a full list of the movies shown at the festivals!
Great episode Pete. Always heard Chris mention the horror show in past episodes, but never realised just how much work goes into it. Definitely a passion project Chris, considering how much you work your arse off! Would love to attend one of these and enjoy something like Day of the Dead on the big screen!
Very cool Chris i have a local cinema here in New Zealand that has recently showed The Thing The Warriors The Wanderers and is showing a 35mm print of Oldboy next week
I attended Hudson Horror Show for the first time on their 4th time around for the December to Dismember and I was HOOKED. I eventually began sponsoring prints as well and dropped some real doozies on the crowd like Lady Terminator, Infra-Man, and The Hidden! Here's hoping HHS comes back soon!
Cool to know there's a connection between Chris' Hudson Horror show and Grindhouse Releasing and Tad Leger. I met Tad at a horror con in Connecticut many years ago and he was a really nice guy. I know Dave Szulkin from Grindhouse due him being in the doom/stoner band The Blood Farmers, as well as him being the cousin of Ross Markonish, guitarist in Ogre, Maine's premiere doom/stoner band.
God I wish you did this in scotland I defo want to go but good luck Chris your passion is invigorating I always wanted to do a hammer horror drive in fest I tip my hat too ya great show Pete and chris 🏴👍🏼🏴👍🏼
Awesome show! I've toyed with the idea of doing a horror film show at some point in my life (a bucket list item), so you've given me a lot of good info here Chris, thank you! One thing I would love to try if possible would be to actually show a double or triple feature in an actual drive in theatre. I know there's probably a lot of extra logistical stuff that would go into this... not sure if it's worth the effort?
You would need to rent a drive in, rent and license 3 movies, get insurance, etc. I never did a Drive In show myself for one reason, bad weather! If it rains, you are screwed.
I love Chris! Thank you so much for your hard work and the knowledge you share with us. I especially appreciate that you visit my hometown, Monroeville, and love George Romero. I feel like we have something cool in common. Keep it coming my friend!
I haven't even watched it yet and I'm giving you props. Heard so much about Hudson Horror and glad to hear story. I got 10 years on Pete and don't identify with all the bad films you watch, but I love Monster Den and Mr Alo is always a treat. I'd rather watch Lawrence of Arabia 10 times than watch 10 bad horror movies, but that's me. I hope Chris keeps an eye on his health. Want him around a long time. It's nice to find buffs that appreciate The Legend of Hell House like I do. Let me do a Alo impersonation. It came out when I was 15 and it was creepy and nude Pam Franklin. Nuff said.
This inspired me to have my own small "film festival" with my friends. 1 crappy 80s music video like bewitched and then a shitty so bad it's good horror film
Great episode guys. I would so love to attend one of these things but travelling from England isn't really going to make this a reality. still got the Monsters Den though...
Lance Henriksen mentioned in the chat. Anyone seen Gunfighter's Moon (Larry Ferguson, 1995) with Lance? If so, is it a good film worth watching? Looks like the only available dvd is the OOP R1 2005 Platinum Disc, never been on blu-ray. Anyone that has the dvd, how's the picture quality? The few YT uploads are pretty poor quality.
Great episode Chris, I’m curious about the mechanics of showing 35mm. How tough is it to get 35mm projectors and lamps for the projectors? Do you do the film splicing yourself? Do you have back up parts/projector if you have a failure?
It is VERY difficult finding venues with 35mm projectors. I didn't do any of the splicing myself, we always used a professional projectionist. And that theater did have some backup parts.
A great insight into your passion and dedication for horror Chris, did you ever show any of the following. Trancers A boy and his dog Night of the comet Razorback Race with the devil
Andrew that is a GREAT list of films! I would have been happy to play any of them! I came closest to Race With The Devil, but we never got it. Would have especially loved to show Razorback, but 35mm film prints of that in the US are pretty rare.
