Yes I'm a corncob pipe smoking ludite, however I changed my rigging over several years ago and love it. In my ancient life it's not smart to go offshore anymore but I've taught my kids, grandkids and great grandkids to sail my old 50s era popular mechanics day sailor. So I laughingly grumble about your comments aimed at ludites as my first surfboard was balsa and redwood you whippersnapper. Safe travels.
Between you and Rigging Doctor, I'm a believer. I don't mind a little extra work for better DIY in remote places. And if the rigging or mast does fail, it can cut it off with a knife instead of trying to find those cutters or hacksaw that you know you have someplace and pray they haven't been rendered useless by corrosion or rust. Amazing! Just amazing... Also remember that "weak points" are built into everything so they break at their weak points (for a reason)... I love being able to repair anything and everything at sea but I would be inclined to use line in an emergency after (and if) a wire broke (never happened to me but hey, it could). Windage and aerodynamics are also major issues on aircraft and boats. Lastly, every pound up a mast takes 10 pounds off the keel so weight also comes into play. I am just looking at the whole picture but still my one word is "Amazing" and Thanks for the great videos!

Hi guys! Nice to meet you. Nice choice on rigging. It’s gotten us about 4,000nm so far. We’re fans. I find I fine tune my rig more now. Didn’t used to do that, but I like always knowing it’s perfect.
I was just at Brion Toss'es shop Thursday, saw all the stuff he is working with there now, this new line is some bad ass stuff! I am getting ready to have him take my mast down and inspect it for me, the blocks he is using are different, they are the 3 holers just like the old timey sailing ships ran. Going to see if I can get him to sit down for a video interview sometime this winter in the slow season.

I wonder if there is a fitting similar to the closed thimble, more like just a ring that the lashing could go through; then there would be no need for the deadeye since the lashings could connect right between the ring and the shroud thimble. Totally cool stuff. You definitely want something repairable when you're cruising. But for me that would be extra staloks, wedges and 1x19 cable. It's cheaper than dyneema double braid for same working load. There are youtube videos with people having used synthetic standing rigging lasting ten years.
You guys have been off the map for so long that the YT system didn't even put this vid into my recommendations list. About 12 minutes 15 seconds ago I started exhibiting some serious Zingaro withdrawal symptoms. What with the fact that your last vid was only a mere 3 minutes and change in length. I was running a high temperature, I was more than a little shaky, and was even kinda sea sick... But I was still able to run a YT search inquiry to see what the heck was up with The Legend of Zingaro. Now what do I find? Well I find out that this vid was posted FIVE DAYS AGO... Talk about being a seriously disappointed Zingaro junkie. I'm going through the DT's and my video heroin was actually at my fingertips for the last freaking five days? I could have died from an under dose. No foolin... I was seriously Jonesing for my sailing video drug of choice... While for five days my fix was already in waiting for me to consume it. Still... I have to admit that it was worth the wait James. The opening was very well put together. The drone shots were very artistic... That mixed with the sound track made my suffering from the lack of the Zingaro tonic go away almost instantaneously. And not a moment too soon I might add. I am very happy to see you so supercharged about your new rigging. The new Dyneema set-up looks strong. I think it was a really intelligent touch to use the color coding for both the Port and Starboard sides. That could help tremendously in a pinch if your quick decision making processes are a little frayed at the edges due to lack of sleep, or possibly an over abundance of the spirits, or both, in some crazy unsuspecting sea fairing emergency situation. If in fact you can't tell your Starboard Right from your Red Port Wine Left now your boat will have the quick answer for you. In the words of Forrest Gump. "It's just one less thing." Have you seen the aluminum structure on the stern of Tulas Endless Summer? You might want to do something similar. They just redid theirs. It holds their radar, solar and dingy. Pretty cool.
You could use a sound editor like Audacity (free) to remove that background noise such as the engine. Your Dyneema videos are great, loving this, thanks.
Same one, just getting better at choosing angles and lighting... we did get a new GoPro 5 so the underwater shots we’re getting now are seriously awesome. Turns out video is hard to do correctly. lol.
If you would invest in a back up wind turbine you could avoid running your engine if its cloudy run the wind turbine or simply switch over when the sun goes down and it will charge at night if theirs any wind at all

Holy hell. What a great change. Love the new vid style! Also, can you talk a bit about UV? I think we all know that half-inch Dyneema is the shit for strength, but what about sun damage?
Thanks. Glad you like. UV is a problem, but it takes a LONG time to damage the fibers enough to matter. 10+ years. One thing you can do is put dyneema chafe sleeve over everything, then it's really bulletproof, but it's $$$ (like $3-$4/ft). Sun does leech the color out quick. In 6 mos or so it'll be bleached pretty bad.
I have probably missed this between you and the rigging doctor, your vids are great, and thank you. Is this an all or none situation ? what do you do with headstay / jib furling systems and your backstay / doubling as antenna ? can those be kept as wire or is there a way to make those synthetic wihout losing funcionality ?
Forestay should stay wire. Can’t see it under the furler for chafing issues. Obviously plastic doesn’t conduct so you’d have to get an external wire. Or leave the backstays and forestay and change the rest... but at that point... what’s the point.

Yes, stainless. Replacing it now (last) as a matter of fact. I hear people have synthetic forestays, but I wouldn’t trust it under the furler.... chafe
Hi James I am changing out the standing rigging on a 21' American Fiberglass. I bought the boat a year ago and I have yet to put it on the water. The side stays are going super. I have not seen anything in your videos on how you addressed the back stays. I am sure your boat is rigged differently then mine, but I would still like to see how you did the back stay? Thank Perry
Hey bro my backstays were cascading 16:1 purchase dyneema, using frictionless rings and 2 harken blocks. I only needed that because my main had so much roach I couldn't tack without it, plus it was nice to be able to adjust them. You can do it static just like the side shrouds. I've got pics somewhere... buried in a 10tb drive. If you really need you can email me. I can at least draw it for you.

Forestay - no. It’s possible, but most people stay with wire (pun intended). I don’t use a gauge, never had one, but I suppose you could retrofit one to work with dyneema. Or just tune it, go sailing, tune again, sail again, till it’s right....

Did you take the outer sheath of some nylon Sampson braid off it's core and put it over the Dyneema for chafing protection ? What is the Turks head knot ? I must have missed that along the way. What's with the very fine braid on the new Dead Eyes ? Is it dyneema covered with nylon ?
So the cover on the deadeyes is actually dyneema chafe cover, and the cover over the outer shrouds is just an old 1/2" line that I took the core out of. I should have mentioned the difference. www.marlowropes.com/product/chafe-sleeve-dyneema
And the Turks Head knot is a decorative knot to keep the deadeye together. Looks way cooler than the frapping knot I used on the first ones. It's a PITA to tie though. Just warning you.

I've seen it done. They don't have a ton of travel. You'd have to get all the construction stretch out, then after a month add it in. Then re-splice the shroud when there was no travel left in the turnbuckle. Maybe if you used pre-heated pre-stretched Dux or dyneema. May I ask why you feel that way?
I might not have been paying attention but how do you adjust all at once? Adjusting each one is an operation. With steel you can go round the boat and adjust all at once, without setup. This is quite important isnt it?
Colligo Marine uses turnbuckles... they prestretch it all for you. More expensive, but idiot proof for us as newer sailors. 😝 We have a Morgan 462, 30,000 lb boat.

Oke i like scooner rigging i don't need rolling furlings, i will heave 2 woodenmast 1 head sail on the back mast on the front mast only mainsails and mainsails on the second mast. so is it possible to put dyneema all around backstay's and frontstay?
I wouldn’t use it for hank on sails, or furlers ttytt. But the rest you can use depending on chafe. I’m sorry I don’t really understand your rig from the description... love schooners. I’d look into colligo‘ sauté they have blocks that look like the old time sailing ships.

Yeah I would definitely recommend everyone have an emergency stay out of dyneema at least. So easy to store... I should sell those...

Wow........You've really perfected Weaving. The thing about a Rope over Cable is you don't have to worry about getting poked by fraid cable.

Had the same thought. It is hard to find rings that are strong enough.....I've looked. Coligo basically does this with the 3 holed tensioning ring

Problem is my steering system is very different than Billy’s. Davits won’t work for me. Plus that’s a lot of weight on the back....

If you would invest in a back up wind turbine you could avoid running your engine if its cloudy run the wind turbine or simply switch over when the sun goes down and it will charge at night if theirs any wind at all

Also, can you talk a bit about UV? I think we all know that half-inch Dyneema is the shit for strength, but what about sun damage?
Thanks. Glad you like. UV is a problem, but it takes a LONG time to damage the fibers enough to matter. 10+ years. One thing you can do is put dyneema chafe sleeve over everything, then it's really bulletproof, but it's $$$ (like $3-$4/ft). Sun does leech the color out quick. In 6 mos or so it'll be bleached pretty bad.
I have probably missed this between you and the rigging doctor, your vids are great, and thank you. Is this an all or none situation ? what do you do with headstay / jib furling systems and your backstay / doubling as antenna ? can those be kept as wire or is there a way to make those synthetic wihout losing funcionality ?
Forestay should stay wire. Can’t see it under the furler for chafing issues. Obviously plastic doesn’t conduct so you’d have to get an external wire. Or leave the backstays and forestay and change the rest... but at that point... what’s the point.

Yes, stainless. Replacing it now (last) as a matter of fact. I hear people have synthetic forestays, but I wouldn’t trust it under the furler.... chafe

I am changing out the standing rigging on a 21' American Fiberglass. I bought the boat a year ago and I have yet to put it on the water. The side stays are going super. I have not seen anything in your videos on how you addressed the back stays. I am sure your boat is rigged differently then mine, but I would still like to see how you did the back stay?

Hey bro my backstays were cascading 16:1 purchase dyneema, using frictionless rings and 2 harken blocks. I only needed that because my main had so much roach I couldn't tack without it, plus it was nice to be able to adjust them. You can do it static just like the side shrouds. I've got pics somewhere... buried in a 10tb drive. If you really need you can email me. I can at least draw it for you.

Forestay - no. It’s possible, but most people stay with wire (pun intended). I don’t use a gauge, never had one, but I suppose you could retrofit one to work with dyneema. Or just tune it, go sailing, tune again, sail again, till it’s right....

Did you take the outer sheath of some nylon Sampson braid off it's core and put it over the Dyneema for chafing protection ? What is the Turks head knot ? I must have missed that along the way. What's with the very fine braid on the new Dead Eyes ? Is it dyneema covered with nylon ?

So the cover on the deadeyes is actually dyneema chafe cover, and the cover over the outer shrouds is just an old 1/2" line that I took the core out of. I should have mentioned the difference. www.marlowropes.com/product/chafe-sleeve-dyneema
And the Turks Head knot is a decorative knot to keep the deadeye together. Looks way cooler than the frapping knot I used on the first ones. It's a PITA to tie though. Just warning you.

Put them on a winch. Doesn’t take much longer, though it makes tuning a bit trickier.

I've seen it done. They don't have a ton of travel. You'd have to get all the construction stretch out, then after a month add it in. Then re-splice the shroud when there was no travel left in the turnbuckle. Maybe if you used pre-heated pre-stretched Dux or dyneema. May I ask why you feel that way?
I might not have been paying attention but how do you adjust all at once? Adjusting each one is an operation. With steel you can go round the boat and adjust all at once, without setup. This is quite important isnt it?
Colligo Marine uses turnbuckles... they prestretch it all for you. More expensive, but idiot proof for us as newer sailors. 😝 We have a Morgan 462, 30,000 lb boat.

Oke i like scooner rigging i don't need rolling furlings, i will heave 2 woodenmast 1 head sail on the back mast on the front mast only mainsails and mainsails on the second mast. so is it possible to put dyneema all around backstay's and frontstay?
I wouldn’t use it for hank on sails, or furlers ttytt. But the rest you can use depending on chafe. I’m sorry I don’t really understand your rig from the description... love schooners. I’d look into colligo‘ sauté they have blocks that look like the old time sailing ships.
