JAGO, the self-taught sculptor who wanted to be Michelangelo

  • Jago is a self-taught sculptor from Ciociaria. He’s thirty years old and since he was a child, dreamed of being like Michelangelo. Art, for him, is a way to find courage thanks to the example set be the great masters of the past. His artwork is based on a constant study on perception: changing the shape of matter, making a stone soft, to astonish and to show that the world isn’t just what it seems to be. His sculpture of Pope Ratzinger was not accepted by the Vatican because the eyes had holes in them, this was in homage to Adolf Wildt, the Pope never even saw the artwork. Years later, Jago, who had refused to fill in the eyes, was finally awarded the Accademia Pontificia prize. And when the Pope resigned, stripping himself of his robes, Jago did the same to his sculpture.
    We followed Jago from his studio in Anagni to Milan, at the Galleria Montrasio Arte, where his solo exhibition is being held.

      Michelangelo, Michelangelo is so famous simply because he came from a time where education and materials were so rare, that his talent and means to dedicate the massive amount of time into his projects have engraved him in our society as a master artist. There have been better after him, but he is the first, his skill is still so unstressably impressive and maybe even beyond that of those who made better work after his passing just because he pioneered, not perfected.

Jago doesn’t see this now but hopefully when he is old and grey he will look back at his teacher and understand why things happened the way they did and perhaps there was no other way to have made Jago into his wishes of becoming who he wanted to be in life other than the path that he went on…

    • @marllram

      Hmm .. I think there isn't quite a black and white of good or bad in a mentor showing their works. I remembered how when I was an art student, knowing each lecturer's portfolio totally made me and other students pander to the each lecturer's personal taste to gain higher evaluation. A good student shouldn't do this, but sometimes when drowning in assignments we simply didn't have enough time to think of a polished concept, therefore the shortcut is to use concepts we know surely favorable to the lecturer. That's the bad side of students knowing 'an example'. The good side, of course students have a point of reference. So it's something ambiguous, and even now as a mentor myself, I sort of unconciously choose which students I show my work to. Those good enough I let them go without seeing my work unless they ask me to (I'm not exactly hiding them, I guess just in the hubbub of intros and sessions the topic of my own portfolio kinda got swept away. Moreover, they can easily look me up online). Conversely though, those lacking will get shown my work as an example of the standard I'm looking for, as well as the pitfalls to watch out. So yeah.. sometimes a mentor not showing their work may also mean that they deem the student is just fine and forgot that no matter how inconsequential, any reference is always a good input.

    • @brent5310
      @brent5310 Год назад +1

      I agree with you, but can't really agree with any of the replies to your comment @Jixter. I had multiple design professors whose feedback to multiple students seemed less than informed or even valid, and after trying to find their own work to back their pompous attitudes, I couldn't find any or, in one professor's case, her "portfolio" consisted of her critiques of her student's work! So yeah, sharing one's actual work is important as a teacher because it establishes credibility. Regarding a reply from a previous commenter: A good teacher also won't cause student's to cater to their design sensibilities, but will rather provide an environment that encourages a variety of styles.

    All my Italian relatives talk at the speed of light, and at the same time as one another 😂 I love his passion. A piece of paper doesn't make you an artist, your passion and drive does. This is something I'm learning now after art school (which taught me nothing that I couldn't have taught myself, I just needed that piece of paper for jobs).

    To the people who seem scandalized by Jago leaving school and how "he wants to be better than Michelangelo. " I believe people need to chill, this man seems to have taken all he could learn from school. It is clear that he has a strong understanding of the basics and obviously felt stagnated if he kept being taught under the strict rules those classical schools put on students. It's like, why continue to sculpt with working conditions that only lets you produce one to two pieces at a time instead of upgrading the tools (like the vacuum and electric drills) to cut time in half and work on even more projects. Clearly, it's the professors who are scandalized and probably even a bit jealous that this young upstart is honing his skills at a much faster pace than they ever did ( just because he decided to think outside the box). Good for him for not following those old farts. Also, I do not see him at all being disrespectful to the great artist. I see him as being inspired by him, he even says he wishes that he was able to see a time lapse of Michelangelo at work? Anyways, bless him for having that level of passion for his craft, it's admirable to see that in a person.
    PS: Also... people tend to forget that Michelangelo would often break with tradition if a new method/technique was beneficial to him. :/

      HonestOpinion22 yeah. Everyone is busy getting offended so they can't see that he isn't being dissrecpectful, or boasting. He is saying his opinion about the school, saying how inspired he is by michelangelo, and how good he wants to become. Not a single bad thing was said in this video

      I totally agree with what you said. I'd also add... That old masters used what they had and could at that time, imagine them seeing us these days using a cheesel and a hamer and refusing to use power tools just because we want to be like them, they would laugh their asses for sure 😂 we can show respect for what they did in many ways and we can try or learn their ways and technics for personal pleasure, education, dedication or just for fun but not waste our lifes doing 3 or 4 scuptures the whole life wasting time and talent, just because we want to use old tools.

    I had a negative experience with my art teacher too : at the start of the year she said something like "in all the years artists endured oppression and had to struggle and now we can finally express ourselves" A half year later we all could make a picture to present it for a year in the shool. We could choose whatever we wanted everyone drew what the teacher wanted (some formless fantasies ) but I drew a robot holding a mobile phone with neon all over beghind him i saying "Robo Invasion!" [ it was before smartphones and chatbots ~ 1999 ^^] So what happene everyone who drew like that teacher could present it to the school and they forbid it that I could use my picture. Thats what made me quit and I never studied art like I wanted to afterwards because I knew you always can come to that kind "anti teacher" or even worse a Professor who judges over you .
    Art can't be taught its in your heart already and techniques can be learned today by those awesome tutorials all around anyways.

    • @RubbinRobbin
      @RubbinRobbin 6 лет назад

      Your mistaken, artistry can be taught, it just takes knowing what to learn and than applying hard work and effort to learn it. I'm just saying he's blinding himself because of his comment claiming he's better than old masters when his work is obviously lacking and he's become a slave to the dremel to surprise viewers with inaccurately designed details, just because you can't see it means you don't have sophisticated taste with art works and is not my problem which makes your sophomoric personal attack on me a red herring. Also, If he was such a natural, even with today's technology, his sculpture would have been received by the pope and been neighbor to the likes of other masters work, and not rejected. There must be something the masters understood that he still can't see. Also, there are hundreds of artists who are more insane than this guy, he has potential as a artists apprentice where he can grow, not so much a master which he claims, and if he's claiming to be a master than this is the highest level of his work possible, and people like you are only confirming this option in his path in life and that is sad. However I do agree with him in one thing, and that's art colleges are utter trash and to add to that, a money grab.

    • @godbluffvdgg
      @godbluffvdgg 6 лет назад

      I'll stipulate artistry can be taught If you'll concede that there are such things as natural self taught artist whom are just as great as the greatest "taught" artist...I am an Artist in many mediums...I recognize great talent too...This guy is on the same plane as the greatest artist ever in history...There's a saying; " Those who can't do; teach"

    • @RubbinRobbin
      @RubbinRobbin 6 лет назад

      I agree that there are those who have a knack for it or a natural talent as you might say even at a young age. The artist with the natural talent wouldn't know their talent if they didn't discover it preferably early on, also you not only need to discover it, you have to hone it, to continue doing it and mastering your talent. This guys work is far from the greatest ever in history especially when his finest piece has so much flaws in the fundamentals required to make such a precision piece. If you dare make a portrait with an exorbitant amount of detail, than do so with precision.

His creations are something that the sculpting world has never scene, in particular the delicate micro skin texturing that really brings his creations down to earth, maybe even below. Where as, the classical sculptors of old tried to achieve godly perfection in raising the human form to as high of a heavenly level as possible. Can't wait to see more from this passionate artist.

    A true artist doesn't give a poo about a certificate. Many people with certificates are NOT artists!

    • @anniesun6468
      @anniesun6468 6 лет назад +6

      that isn't true, people with certs need it because they want art to be their career as well as their passion, getting a cert doesn't anyone less of an artist. the guy in the video doesn't need to be employed to sculp so its one of the reasons why he doesn't have it.

      OMAE WA MOU SHINDERU oh wow, people don’t need certificates to make it a career. It’s facist and snooty. True talent can’t be learned, that’s what art is. I’m not knocking the people who went to art school. Just the same, don’t knock people who didn’t, there are tons of exceptional, self taught, gifted, natural artists.
