I think I put this over the Northman in his filmography. So many shots are well staged, lit, and dressed that it really was a vibrant experience watching it in the theater. I was also really impressed by the core cast in general. Even Lily Rose-Depp I found to be very riveting. She certainly brought a good amount of intensity. Aaron Taylor-Johnson was also nailing it in his role with subtlety in stark contrast to some of the more bombastic performances of Depp and Defoe. One of my favorite scenes in the movie was when Johnson’s character was monologging with a corpse. It was pure Poe-esque gothic kitsch. I will say that the story as a whole did feel a bit rudimentary for its length. I mean this version fairly longer than the 1922 original and yet I didn’t feel that emotionally invested in the characters as people. They felt more like tools to keep the movie going. Nonetheless less it was a fun ride. I eagerly await Egger’s next project, he’s like Del Toro (when he makes movies like Pan’s Labyrinth and Crimson Peak and not Pacific Rim lol) only less romantic and more nefarious.
