No, various companies take these results, invest millions of their own money from their research and development pipeline into developing a product, some of which become successful products and others become complete failures. It takes an average of ten years for a pharmaceutical company to take an idea from basic research to a patented product approved by the FDA. There is a huge cost and risk involved in taking a drug candidate from discovery to patented product, they are not "slapping patents" on them and "making all the profits".
