Thanks Mike. Your Mega Man streams are some of my favorites on the channel.
If nothing else, the background work in this hack is exemplary. Strong color contrast and attention to detail which helps set each level apart. Would that Capcom would take note of talent like this-- but they won't.
Agreed that was the highlight of this hack.
As a 41 yr old, I haven't played enough (retro) games. I need to play at least until my 80s.
At least with these (good) hacked games or even retro-style games, everyone is relativity unfamiliar with the strategy - unlike well traveled classics

The music during the Yellow Devel fight (and in other places) is Jet To Jet by Alcatrazz. Very nice.

I am to understand there’s a reskin of LJN’s Who Framed Roger Rabbit using ET and Elliot, as Roger and Eddie respectively. Benny the cab is the bike, Weasels are FBI agents, and Judge Doom is Keys. Kinda cool making the flower pots hitting Elliot on the head.
A good looking Mega Man rom hack you might enjoy is Mega Man 4 Voyage.
It has custom music, looks well made (watched a quick playthrough to verify it wasn't jank), and has neat, simple twists on existing Mega Man mechanics in each level. Clever but not obtuse. There are 2 versions: Voyage and Voyage blue version. Blue was made after a split from one of the developers who had a different taste for level design, so you could try them both and decide which is better! Blue is supposedly slightly easier. Dunno if they work on the EverDrive, though...

Some Mega Man hacks I've played through and beaten that were pretty good:
Mega Man 4 hack: Sparking to Hero
Mega Man 3 hack: Megankreuzstilette
I like that Mega Man's speed is increased. The stage design was very good, and the backgrounds are amazing.
I liked that some of the weapons were reworked. It's too bad only some did though, especially since all the names changed.
Really would have been nice to see something different from the bosses, especially the Wily bosses.
The music was an interesting touch. Too bad some tracks were reused. And when hacks use music from other games, I always end up wishing they'd make the level reflect the music. Like the level that had Contra music should resemble Contra and also be appropriate for the robot master or gets paired with.
Still overall looks like a better than average hack. A lot of potential there to be better too.

So Shadowman's level is an 8-bit version of Boomer Kuwanger's stage from Megaman X?

46:31 Mike, no. The creator of this had no good idea about color palette or anything. There is green and red in the foreground and then purple, blue and the same red also in the background. At times (up to this point) the game is loaded with irritating visual aspects. And constantly is something flashing. The rom hacker couldn't even care to explain the subtitle Winternight through the game. What is even going on here? Is it because of the speed up cocaine effect? Is that it. The cocaine - the snow? Winternight? IS THAT the connection here. Oh boy.

1:06:10 with that my previous "cheap Chinese hack" argument shines. Just take Boomer Kuwanger stage from MMX and implement it in a NES rom. With bad color choices etc. There aren't even any funky things going on anymore as if the hacker didn't care at that point. Poor level design. Poor game design. Enemy and obstacle placement on top. Among the worst hacks. RESPECT to Mike to endure this shit.

My recommendation, Super Mario Bros 3 Ultimate. Gave it a whirl, and is a legit pretty hard romhack.

This is the second Mega Man hack in a row (after Mega Man CX) where the hackers took some elements from the Mega Man X games (though in this case it was mostly the stage music, mostly from Mega Man X1, and some background art). I find that kind of nifty and makes me wonder how a demake of Mega Man X for an 8-bit console would look like.
The speed thing got me curious and as it turns out, when I tried out Mega Man hacks a while ago, I came across Rockman 3: Speedbound, made by the same hacker, which seemed decent when I played it. It appears that this kind of speeding up things is this hacker's M.O.....Man, I really should try out more Mega Man games but as always, so much games, so little time.

It seems like older games were more difficult than modern games. Megaman was cool in the old days growing up. I had all of them and beat them all with the pee shooter only when I was like 9. Good times.

And the hacker just repeats earlier stage music in the Wily levels as well. Wow. This person couldn't figure out anything to be done properly. I bet not even when its life was on the line. Seriously. That is why i detest rom hacks for so long now. I seen it literally all and every new hack just brings along old rom hacker ideas and problems. Just a bunch of amateurs.

Game hacks are low tier efforts to get attention. Level design is often times worse than with indie games. That's why there are always cheap deaths. Who taught them that their "creations" are any good? Every second grader in China learns how to hack roms. Terrible.
