    I have a pair of the m106 and i love the neutrality and the way the sound never seems to be coming directly from the speakers. On the face of it, it doesnt look like the m126 is a significantly "better" speaker than the m106. Here in the UK the m106 can be had for £1k but the m126be are about £4k, im not convinced they're 4 x better (for my money anyway). Thanks for the top work Erin, glad to see you back mate.

    Hello! You raised a good point with the distortion values. Because I listen to music mostly at concert level, (90 db or more) the smoothness or balance of the response becomes quite important. Most reviewers only refer to the 1 Watt-1 meter graphic to see if the sound is clean or not. Your methodology is excellent and it makes for a great review.

    Suprising measurements seeing that these are the near the top of the Revel bookshelf food chain. Revel dont seem to care much about diffraction, maybe because they know the effects of diffraction isnt really going to change the preference in a blind test. 🤷‍♂️ And for 4 and a half grand, nah, Im just gonna get myself a large floorstander.

    • @awsomenesscaleb
      @awsomenesscaleb Год назад +1

      The Ultima2 line was designed to eliminate diffraction. They had to discontinue it because the rounded baffles had to be built by hand, and it got too expensive. They are aware of the problem but have to engineer around it to lower costs.

      The waveguide was designed for the 5.25 midrange not a 6 in midbass. They crossed the tweeter at 1700 hz in the 126, 400 hz lower than the 106 and 600 hz lower than the 226. Either you can have a smoother response or more bass output in a 2 way but hard to have both.

  • @juliangst
    @juliangst Год назад +19

    At this price I expect no compression in the mid/highs at those levels. The R3 Meta is much better value than this imho

    • @matthewfrazee3352
      @matthewfrazee3352 Год назад

      Revel compromised the design. They crossed the tweeter at 1.7k. Probably better to use the 5.25 midrange driver as the midbass driver used in the 226 and 228 and crossed higher and settled for lower bass output. Either smoother in the lower treble region or lower bass output, hard to have both in a 2 way design.

    Appreciate the comments on apparent source width. Spot on.
    I've also explored coverage angles, and the experiences sidewall energy elicits.
    Elements contributing to ASW;
    - source radiation coverage
    - sidewall proximity, geometry, and acoustic characteristics
    - psychoacoustic manipulation in the mix
    Even a spectral tilt can be used to generate perceived height, ... via our pinna shape.
    I recall years ago Dr. Toole suggesting listeners getting a "second look" at the playback reproduction via the first sidewall reflection, claiming it can actually solidified intelligibility.
    This runs counter to best practices of the ETC measurement, like a 10dB reduction by 40msec.
    But like most all things acoustic, experiencing that sidewall energy isn't universally good, it just depends.

    I'm really curious if the woofer manufacturer is SB Acoustics since the speaker really looks like the SB17CAC35 ceramic woofer. I've seen a picture of the back of the woofer and the basket looks slightly different, or I should say, weaker, but the magnet is identical. From my DIY speaker building experience, I'd put them at around 600$ of parts, which is around 25% of the MSRP. They look pretty solid!

    • @gregorymorrill7558

      It is not. I have taken mine out. Only the cone loks like an SB woofer. EVerything else, motor, basket ect is clearly not. Might be custom Harman or could be Scan Speak. It is a beastly motor by the way for this type of design. The driver has a higher FS (65-70hrz) which I think is good considering the design goals and small enclosure.

    • @pliedtka
      @pliedtka Год назад +2

      Thanks for straightening the rumors out. So it is not SB, has very different suspension, motor a bit similar. I wonder how different is cone of the 17NBA/CAC. Anyway, I tried the 17NBAC35-4 and ... While the details were amazing it has too much metal cone flavor and brightness for me to call it neutral. The bass in 17L tuned in 40Hz area also had some tendencies to go a bit boom. I think the paper cone version is much 'easier' on ears. And both, well, all SB midbass drivers require very complicated filter topology to push them into LR4 around 2kHz X-O point. Supposedly the CRC Rohacell/carbon cone is the nicest sounding one - I'm tempted.
      P.S. is the tweeter a copy of a 26ADC family (for the regular M126 version) or entirely different design ?

    I own both the 226 and 126. Revel chose to cross the 126 over at 1.7 kHz to meet the geometry of the wave guide size apparently. They probably should have chosen to go with the 5.25 inch drive and crossed it over at higher frequency and then rolled the bass off higher. It would have lower bass output but when used with subs a much better performer. After watching this video I used a parametric eq to cut 1700 hz 3 db with a high q and then filled in the 3000 hz dip with another eq setting. This didn’t seem to change the tonality to my ears but cleaned up the lower treble region. To my ears much better sounding now.

Remeber that doesn't imply the driver was not heavily customized to meet Revel design spec nor that Revel did not do a lot of the R&D. Alot propabily depends on the specific model. I owned these for a while. Highly detailed and refined, but there are flaws in the upper mid bass and there can be grain issues unless you match amp/pre-amp carefully. My Kef r3 is a more musical experience 95% of the time, though less detailed. R3 Meta actually has some of the same grain issues without careful choice of associated gear. I didn't keep the 126be's because they underperformed for the money...and I paid 2500 for a used pair. They were replaced with Magnepan .7's and a pair of SVS SB3000 subs, which is about the same money, but far more musical. I'd also rate my KLH Model 5's as more enjoyable than the 126be's. On the other hand, matched correctly and with top level recordings, the 126be's can prove their high-end price point quite nicely. For most people there will be better choices for less money. BTW, if you want a great speaker, find the non-meta version of the Kef R3's. They are sweet and almost full range for many recordings; a very musical design that is forgiving enough to live with.

In Aperion, F3=55 Hz, F6=46 Hz, F10=40 Hz. So in general, anything F10 and above, the Aperion is producing more bass. Similar to your comment in the Kef R3 Meta, the R3's data points in your plots are: F3=72 Hz, F6=59 Hz, F10=40 Hz. In all 3 speakers, at every F(x) data point, the V8 has more output up to F10. How can you state the bass sounds stronger with these bass shelfs when the datapoints versus the Aperion V8B as the plots do not match the claim? I'd like to be educated here in the thoughts of room gain. Thanks.

    A speaker varies its impendence over the frequency range. How does this impact the quality of the sound from any particular amplifier, speaker combination? Seems like it would degrade the sound if the power out changes over the frequency range.

      I had both the 228be and the 4367 in the same room for while doing direct A/B switching using a McIntosh MC462 amp.
      The 4367 is honestly better in every way. Much more detailed top to bottom. The big thing is it is more dynamic and just sounds more real and live for lack of a better word.
      I alway thought the 228be was super detailed in the mids and highs but the 4367 is much more detailed in the highs and about the same in the mids. I would say they have the same in room tonal balance and with the treble set lowing on the 4367 switch is darker/warmer then the revel. With the switches turned up they are brighter than the revel.
      The bass on the 4367 is comically better. Way more detailed, textured, and deeper.
      The odd thing is the soundstage size is about the same. You would expect the 228be to be wider, I guess it was but not really. My room is 25/42/8 and heavily treated.

    With the compression, it looks like the midrange is between .5 and 1dB. Is it true that 1dB is about how much of a volume difference the average person can hear in a totally silent treated room, and 3dB is about the volume change in a residential room for an average person to notice?
    (Of course, someone who obsesses over these things may notice more, but I'd forgive anything at or under ~2dB. Turn off the AC and fans and fridge and you'll get more dynamic range than worrying about the compression on this speaker and most others.)

    12:10 If the speaker designers purposefully choose to use a driver arrangement that creates lobes, there will be issues at the crossover region that are not the fault of the crossover itself, but the inherent disadvantages of non-coaxial speakers.
    :)
    Definitely biased in favor of coaxials and a stickler, but I REALLY want Revel and D&D and Kii to make some coaxial speakers, especially since there are now zero inherent issues with coaxial drivers besides price.
    A wider dispersion revel coaxial would be great to compare to a KEF or Genelec and see what I liked. Unfortunately they don't make one. Prior to this year the last valid argument I heard against coaxials was from an email with Genelec stating that there was no compression driver+midrange that would work for accurate, high SPL speakers. Now they have fixed that like they've fixed every other issue documented in their 8260 whitepaper from 2010.
    I know not everyone does yoga, lays on the couch, sits and leans at different head heights, plays mario kart on the floor, stands up to get a drink during a movie and cares, etc. but the most ragged response from most speakers is their ceiling and floor reflections, and some people don't realize that their ceiling may actually be closer to the tweeter than the walls of their listening room.
    Super important for these companies to figure out their vertical response and also increase their usability for center channels as a bonus... Heck, even my Genelec 8351b center isn't perfect because there is some floor bounce, but man is it better than two and three way speakers that have lobes like that.
    For my use I wouldn't be surprised if I liked a set of $800 Kali's better because, while I'd appreciate the on axis response when I'm sitting up and listening from the middle seat, I'd also notice the vertical dispersion issues. Maybe these would be good for nearfield at a desk though, as my standing desk keeps things more or less at ear level whether or not I'm sitting on standing.

    Wow, spending so much for a speaker that does not have a very good bass extension to me is rather disappointing. I mean, look at the Est. In Rm Response - it started to roll off at 150hz region and f3 went down to 55hz. That is going to take away bass punch in your kick drum. Even having a subwoofer, you can't properly implement a good cross-over point, which you are likely to end up at around 120hz region. That will make the bass from your sub more directional. Imho, I would rather go with a pair Linton and take a slight hit on the DI but using the spare cash to invest in a MiniDSP and a good sub.

      I have no trouble getting a superb blend with several differnt subs @ different x-over points. Estimated in room is kind of pointless in the bass region IMHO. Room size and SBIR traits are such huge factors. By the way I have owned the Lintons and these two speakers sound pretty different. The Lintons are good but I did not like the trebble/tweeter. The bass on the Lintons is nice but since I have subs there is no benefit for that. I would never take the Linton's over the M126be's. Believe me on that, I sold those Lintons. Linton's were not for me, ultimately they came accross as a nice $400 5.25" 2-way set strapped to a very decent 8" woofer and splapped in an nice retro box. Totally decent.
