  • David Tennant has and always will be one of my favorite actors but he just put himself even higher on my list late last month when he pissed off UK government officials and Miss J.K. Rowling herself. His speech at the British LGBT Awards had many transphobic terfy people in an uproar and I am so here for it. He has been a wonderful ally to the queer and trans communities and this just makes me love him even more!

@@Diablo_Himselfback in 2018 it was still a debate on whether joanne was truly transphobic, but over this past half decade she tweets worse and worse messages about trans people every day. initially she acknowledged the existence of trans women, although in a not-so-subtle dismissive way, saying 'i would mark alongside you *if* you were oppressed', quite the strong 'if'. it is now years later, and joanne replied to a photo of a projection that said 'trans women are women' with 'no'.
that alone is enough evidence, but sadly it gets worse, as every day is filled with tweets about trans people, now deep in the conservative/right-wing mindset that all men are predators, therefore trans women are predators, and all women are biologically weaker, and victims of wanting to escape womanhood by transitioning into a man. this fundamentally extreme and anti-autonomy ideology is what ironically has become a branch of feminism, known as 'radical feminism' or being 'gender critical', though most folks know them as 'trans exclusionary radical feminists' or TERFS. they believe that gender is oppressive, that only biological sex matters, and that trans existence reinforces oppression. 'terfism' does not recognise any of the studies on tens of thousands of trans people's satisfaction with gender affirming care (the regret rate consistently over decades being 1%), and fails to acknowledge the extensive history of trans people throughout history and cultures across the world. **this branch of 'feminism' has recently been labelled as an anti-rights group by the United Nations Women, naming them alongside 'mens rights' activists.**
in one famous recent instance, joanne committed holocaust denial, by denying that trans people were ever victims in the holocaust, and doubling down on it despite folks attempting to point out this is horribly incorrect. she has since sued people from the uk for calling out her blatant falsehood. basically, you know the book burnings done by the nazis? well, the famous photos we have of those burnings are of nazis burning books from the institute for sexuality, mainly run by magnus hirschfeld, a jewish gay man. this institute was revolutionary in trans healthcare, performing some of the first gender affirming surgeries. there is also evidence of transgender people taken and marked under the same categories as gay and and 'anti-social' people when taken to camps.
joanne referred to david tennant's support of the lgbtq+ community as the 'gender taliban' which.. is something so insane i cannot put into words
there is a very good video by 'shaun' called 'jkrs new friends' which goes into depth about her close ties to anti-abortion, anti-gay, anti-trans naturally, and far-right figures, who she routinely expresses support for. i also strongly recommend watching 'contrapoints' video 'jk rowling' to get a complete and probably much better explanation of joannes process of becoming how she is today
i write this as someone who grew up loving harry potter, and idolised joanne. the first big books i read were harry potter, i watched the films every time i was sick and could quote the lines as they were spoken. i remember planning to get a hp tattoo when i was an adult. i had harry potter stickers galore! for a while, i ignored what she was initially saying about the trans community, because i had that much love for her work. however i have watched her fall deeper and deeper, and as someone with probably more trans friends than cis, i fully reject her and her work

Also her 'I was poor' backstory is pure bullshit. I was actually poor at the same time as she claimed to be, and she said she wrote Potter while on benefits on a train. If this is true than a single ticket for the journey she was talking was, and still is, more than UK unemployment benefits for a whole week. She may have been talking about the child benefits and tax breaks that everyone at that time got, **however** only extreme right wing people think that's a bad or shameful thing and would ever bring it up. Depending on the person, it's either patriarchy or political misandry. A trans woman specifically is a kick in the teeth to their whole worldview - for patriarchy, that maleness is the ideal state of humanity and anything else is inferior, and for political misandry, that all (cis) men are innately evil and all (cis) women are innately pure and saintly and innately victimised any time they're even near a man.
Since both sorts can't process someone with a male body rejecting that identity for any honest reason (ie wanting to live the truth of their own neurological gender identity), they have to assume that a trans woman is actually a man and is merely masquerading as a woman for nefarious purposes. Therefore they assume that every trans woman is either a sports cheat wanting to win in women's sport in order to steal that opportunity from "real" women, or a rapist manipulating the system to get easier access to victims, or in some other way a fraud seeking an unfair advantage.
The frequency with which trans women are raped is completely off their radar. They don't believe such an event can occur, so they don't register how often it happens. Likewise, the fact that most trans women in sport perform no better than the average cis woman competitor cannot register for them.
The corollary is how much less vitriol they have for trans men. They regard a "woman wanting to live as a man" as a perfectly understandable desire - one to be stamped out as uppity and stolen privilege wherever they see it, but not an existential threat to society the way they react to trans women.

Even if we just look at HP objectively without the author, we'll see that it's a deeply conservative, heteronormative, and authoritarian story. People will argue that it's all the opposite, but it's just simply false once you look any closer. Some of the most amazing people I met online were from the queer side of the fan art / fanfiction community who hate JK, I remember there was a joke at one point that we should just start saying that Emma Watson wrote HP, but I just felt so burned out of ignoring JK by the start of this year that I'm done with HP.

And the horrible part is you only see them once the creator reveals their true self. I'm glad that people were able to get happiness from them before, (especially with you appreciating your old art!) but still rejecting it because nostalgia can only go so far.

I then ask how many of these were committed by trans folks, let them know I struggle to find any cases at all attached to the trans community. I then point out that basically all these horrific crimes were committed by straight cis males (my own gender and sexuality) so why is no one screaming about "protecting cis women" from them? And I kind of low key LOVE her over simplification before she gets into the real discussion "We've already gone after the L and the G... the B is too close to home for our swing voters... so T it is!"

Honestly women write as male heroes and protagonists a lot. But this really isn't a sign about anything. Usually it just means that they're trying to appeal to a male audience who likely wouldn't read a book with a female hero. Unfortunately.

I love David Tennant for all of this, so much. I see where he's coming from and I know it's all from a place of love and support. I do think he slipped up with the whole "doesn't exist" thing though. If a TERF said they wanted a world where a prominent trans activist didn't exist, we'd be livid
I'm sure he meant "doesn't exist as a political force", but then I'm already on his side of the argument, so of course I'm giving him the benefit of the doubt. To me, there isn't even any doubt in the first place. But for the TERFs? He's just handed them some easy ammunition to attack him with, and an easy excuse to ignore him
Still, it's just one slip, he walked it back in the very next sentence, and he's a wonderful ally, and I'm so glad he's on our side

Who doesn't check before they use a pseudonym to make sure it's not being used by someone in your field, or worse someone horrible from history? If it's an actual genuine coincidence it's f'ing kismet and a giant warning sign from all the deities.

@@wierdalien1 no, not really - his name was Robert Galbraith Heath. So if he had been her inspiration, she'd have gone for Robert Heath. On a literary note. I don't understand how Rowling wrote Grindelwald. Because fundamentally they(Grindelwald and Rowling) use the same logic. Grindelwald is not Voldemort. While he's absolutely a wizard supremacist, he doesn't want to kill non-wizards. No, he thinks they're fools who are easily led to destruction, so he has to take control and do what's best for them because they lack the capacity to know what's good for them. But isn't that exactly what Rowling believes about trans people? She thinks they've been brainwashed by the woke agenda so politicians should limit transitioning because trans people don't know what's best for themselves. I don't understand how these two positions are particularly different. But he's a villain so you'd think she has to understand on some level the logic of "I'm better than you so I know what's best for you" is hateful.

As a huge HP Dan, I'd say JKR is more like Lucius Malfoy (and I say this as a fan of Lucius). She's rich and uses her money as a cushion to say awful things and expect to avoid consequences. She would use her money and influence to pass awful laws she favors or to dismiss laws she disliked. She also expects to never be criticized by anyone.

See, the only part of the video I disagree with is 8:25 - I believe telling people to "look it up themselves" is the wrong mentality when we approach education on LGBT+ rights. I can look up a study that says vaccines cause autism. There is plenty of false information on the Internet, and those opposed and hesitant will likely not verify their sources and pick the study that fits the narrative. This is why whenever activists and advocates of those topics say "It's not my job to educate you" - yes, yes it is. You are the one advocating the subject, you need to be prepared with the materials supporting your statements.

    • @SonnieCelanna
      @SonnieCelanna 11 дней назад +5

Honestly this should be the norm for all topics. "Its not my job to educate you" is something born from being tired of having to engage with people you are worried won't engage fairly back but unfortunately, it doesn't actually help to refuse.
'You can google for yourself' is a statement that's true but doesn't take into account all the nuances of just what kinds of things people might find. Or if they'll even do a deep dive for multiple sources or just go with the first one they can find.
Maybe they will change their minds, but its never going to come from someone refusing to actually help facilitate them changing their mind. Plus showing you've done your research can often help prove you know what your talking about, which gives you more credit.
Then again, as an aside, I think this should be a general rule of thumb especially for things people hate. If you hate something, it should be standard practice to learn as much about it as possible. It would help prevent so many unnecessary forms of hate, and if it is justified (Just as an example, Guns, not falling on either side just giving an example where the latter could applu), you'll have actual ground to stand on for hating them because you know what you're talking about instead of coming across as reactionary.
Sorry, that was way longer than I meant it to be.

The biggest problem (to me) with Rowling bringing up "rape survivors" as an argument against trans people existing is that she is weaponising their trauma for her own gain, which is fuuuuuucked.
