This was incredibly helpful, I'm about to about to sell one of these C1s to my mother in law, and thanks to a bit of rain the past couple of days, I realised that re-fitting the top half of the boot seal wasn't enough to solve my leak as the headliner was soaking wet and a puddles had formed in the boot and wheel well (AGAIN)... Thankfully I came across your video, so I sealed up the brake light and the two larger tail lights with clear silicone, so fingers crossed that's solved the problem. Keep up the good work

I did it two days ago after watching your video. And I applied a sealant not on the seal on the lamp itself, but on the body car. Adhesion to the metal of the body, I think, will be much better than to the dirty seal of foam rubber. It does not degrease does not work, and rubbed the metal with a degreaser. It turned out well. To speed up the drying warmed with a hair dryer. Now you can remove the lamp and quickly put it back when you need it. I wish you success!

Great video , thanks. I sealed the foam behind the light clusters some time ago and it wasn't a complete success. I've done the top brake light as well though I'm not sure that was necessary. With our car I think the culprits are the air vents behind the bumper. The seals were pathetic and water running down past the light cluster will run round and under the rear window then pass down and should go around the air vents but I reckon in our case it was getting in there.

Thanks for sharing - this could really help me as I have a 106 which is leaking in badly at the back on the passenger side. My husband keeps saying, ' get rid of it' but I love this little car, no tax, low insurance, low on fuel and easy to park. I can get all my cash carry stuff in it if I put seats down. So I will definitely investigate the light fittings - thanks again.

Jay Topham - Sorry to say your husband is clueless. Although very inconvenient and extremely annoying. ALL the water ingress points, and there are many. Are easily corrected, fast and best of all cheap to solve... ;-)
Depending on the condition of the original gasket on the rear light cluster.
Most probably don't need any other intervention, other than clean (wash) it, make it supple again (heat) and that's it, done! Keep the silicone sealant only for the top brake light. ;-)
Remove light cluster wash/clean the gasket and respective mating surface on the car body. Make sure to remove all the dirt, dust and grime.
Now the fun part. Hit it with a air drier, heat gun, whatever is more handy. So the rubber gasket get slightly more supple. After that apply some silicone spray (liquid), for lubrication, not to "glue" it in place. Assemble it all back together and enjoy! It's that simple, cheap and easy!
BTW this also work a treat for refrigerator & freezer door gasket and such. It's the same principle warm up the gasket. So it expand to it's original shape and form and you're back in businesses!
Definitely there's no need to "glue" it with silicone. ;-)
It's faster than writing all this! LOL 😂

The space for the spare wheel was full of water on my C1 when i bought it, i newer got it fixed during the months i owned it. Just drained it with the plugs mentioned in the video. Found a 2008 107 with only 24000 km on the odometer instead and i will definitely seal my car up before i get an issue with water. Saw an other channel where they put another foam gasket on the metal side so there was foam against foam when the light was reassembled.

Went to take the light off the sponge stuck to the car! Glued it back on the light back and reapplied silicone. I may try the White plumbers paste you mention in the Focus video if it persists.

This has just happened on the Mrs car, we thought it was because of the recall last year, where they replaced the window and seals in the rear, just rung the garage up and they mentioned the seal around the rear light, its mainly on the passenger side on the rear, but thanks for this i will seal them all over the weekend and that should do the trick.

Having just checked it out I found a good inch of water in the tyre well. I'm gonna do as you have.... but with plumbers Boss White jointing compound. Great video tip to solve the water leakage. I think another alternative to silicon sealer would be to use Plumbers Mait it would also work great to seal the lights from water leaking in and its a proper water repellent sealing compound and the bonus it doesn't set so the light lens can be removed for changing the bulbs without it being glued down by the silicon method to the car 👍

Nice. They all got the same problem ^^
I just removed my 3rd breaking light and just put some duct tape over the hole. Then left the car outside for 2-3 rainy days and checked every day the boot for water incoming. It was pretty dry, so i think main problem is the 3rd light and the others are just the "bonus".
Also i saw on the 3rd light, that it is pretty much pressed on left and right, where the screws are, but got a little, just a tiny, hole on the mid section.
But i'm stil aware of "glueing" the light to the car, as you need to remoe it every time a lamp is broken.
I'm still working on a nice solution for this.

My Wife has had her C1 from new within 8 months she was complaining that the car was steaming up and felt a bit damp, it was mentioned to the dealers but they said they couldn’t find anything wrong and told her to use the heater more often. A month or two on and after a heavy rain storm the boot floor was soaking wet. Back to the dealers and it was fixed under warranty, problem was the high level brake light gasket had failed the water comes in on the left hand side (near side) all the way down behind the head lining and trim arriving onto the boot floor under the carpet. Easy to miss in the early stages as small amounts are soaked and dispersed in the carpet. Today six years on, water in the car again, the boot carpet soaked but this time the parcel shelf was also soaking wet. I thought I’d investigate myself, took the carpet and parcel shelf out, dried them in the house, folded the back seats down shut the tail glass and ran a hose pipe over the roof . Watching from inside the car I could see the water getting past the main rubber seal at the top which explains it getting as high as the parcel shelf, there was also a smaller amount getting in through the push button assembly at the bottom and onto the boot floor and a tiny bit coming in from that high level brake light again.
From the outside with the tail glass up, a few conifer leaves stuck to the rubber between the glass when closed was all it needed to allow the water to get in . Dirt around the rubber also slowing down the flow, how did the designers think this was going to work, the rubber uses all the metal seam so effectively blocking the water channel you would see on other cars. After a very detailed clean I have this working but will need to keep on top of this to keep the rain out. I checked out the light clusters as per vides but they seamed ok, the high level brake light that had been replaced by the dealers is stuck to the car so I can’t get it off without damaging it, looks like some sort of black windscreen glue so they mustn’t have been happy with just fitting just the original gasket. As it’s just a tiny leak in this I will pipe in tiny amount of silicone, masking off the car, hope we don’t need to change a bulb but if we ever do the fitting is a goner anyway due to the dealers glue.
Thanks for your information we still like the car and will persevere.

@@paulh1860 Not "wet" per se, but damp to the touch. I guess it depends on which way the water leaks through? The seat belt was also soaked when pulled through because it retracts into the area where the leak is.
I've completed the fix, but also put a dehumidifier in the car for almost a whole day to help dry things out - I was getting horrendous condensation all through the car, which may also be the cause of your wet seat?

@@paulh1860 I think the leak on my wife's car was the off-side rear light cluster, but I sealed *all* the rear lights just in case.
The roof lining wasn't wet, but was starting to grow spots of mould, probably due to the condensation caused by the swimming pool in the spare wheel well.
The dehumidifier worked wonders, but I still want to do another day with it just to be sure - I pulled the boot carpet out and that is drying naturally in the shed.

Ours have stayed on for years now and quite a few goes through the car wash machines at several garages. Also worth mentioning is there are two breather ports behind the rear bumper that are very poorly attached and removal of the bumper and a good reseal of these prevents water getting in. I just mastic them in with exterior sealant, then pop the bumper back on. Takes 20 mins or so to do.

I have owned my Aygo for 12 years and chased this leak, it got worse with age,
I found that the leak got worse when snow was on the roof, a clue,
I found the high level brake light, the oval one above the rear window was at fault,
If you look closely at the top of the light and the area it seals against, you can see a gap where the foam seal has shrunk and would allow a large amount of water in behind the roof liner,
Either the red plastic of the lens warps over time or the foam seal shrinks due to UV,
I took it out cleaned both sides put masking tape around the light and put a bead around where the light would sit,
Just the top half of the light should be enough as water normally doesn't travel upwards,
I then lightly screwed the lens in position and used a lolly pop stick to profile the silicone,
Then when it dried i could do it up to "squish" the sealant for a better seal,
When i bought my car in 2009 i knew about the reported leaks,
It was not clear where the leak were coming from, but that high level brake light looks like it was the reason, on Aygo at least,
The Pug, and Citroen have the same high level light,
It would also make it look like the rear lights were leaking as the water would flow past the rear of the light clusters to make it look like that was the fault,
Great video as always, hope this helps someone as left it will start to send your rear seat and seat belts mouldy,
I also pulled off the sodden recycled fabric off the back of the boot carpet and threw it away.
