In this video we're performing some upgrades to the engine air intake and turbo piping on a 2020 Chevrolet Silverado 3500 SRW with the 6.6 Duramax Turbo Diesel. The customer has supplied us with a Banks Power intake with extra large filter as well as a Banks turbo pipe kit for the L5P Duramax. The turbo pipes are a larger diameter than the stock components and the turbo air inlet horn and Banks air filters massive size will reduce air restriction to the compressor inlet. In upcoming videos we install a Banks Ram air rear diff cover with Amsoil lubricant a Banks Power DPF back exhaust. Next will be a Banks iDash and Derringer Tuner, with Pedal Monster

    Hey Dr Ray,
During your absence yesterday, I watched a video of yours from about a year and half ago😢, Nissan pickup, your sense of enthusiasm was very dismal in fact sad. Could actually hear the displeasure in your voice...not in your happy place.
Now in your own shop, the resonances of displeasure no longer exists, being your own boss, working at your own place I feel makes you a very happy camper/entrepreneur/mechanic. Your laughing is a clear indication that you are indeed happy. Having fun at work is what it's all about, that and taking care of your family. Keep up the great work Dr Ray.

I do agree with you, it is their money to spend how they want. But these larger pipes are the equivalent of cutting your garden hose in half, splicing them back together with a 5 foot section of fire truck hose, and expecting more flow out of your sprinkler.
That being said, the larger pipes would be beneficial if the turbo and intercooler were also upgraded. Maybe the owner has future plans to do just that?

minded individual satisfied. "Satisfied" is what makes everyone smile and not frown. Too many expect satisfied to be "happy" all the time. The good thing banks does is there testing not only are you increasing the diameter of the piping by going up a inch but you are also removing the rubber hot side pipe that expands under pressure which gives some lag to the turbo I noticed a improvement when I did the hard pipe setup on my old 95 eclipse gst the turbo response gets better and if the owner ever wants to up the pressure he will have less of a chance to rupture that hose. And the tuner is needed do to difference in intake pipe size as well as intercooler size so it doesn't create a lean out condition

Banks does a lot of actual testing. If those who don’t understand or have doubt, on the banks channel, they have so many videos that go in-depth explaining the benefits but more importantly, they provide actual real test results. They use all manner of testing equipment to validate the results. This is being done to allow the engine to breath better. Anytime a human breathes through a straw, the bigger the straw, the better a person can breathe. It’s the same for the trucks heart.

Ray, that 2018 looks like it might be an AFM lifter failure, super common on these. They run really rough when that happens and will shake a lot and be really loud. Sometimes the lifters rotate and the roller which can no longer rotate just hammers the cam. You can check it easily enough without pulling the engine, just pop the valve covers off, the offending lifter will be real easy to spot where the very loose rocker arm is and a possibly busted valve spring and bent push rod.... I bet if its a lifter its on 1 or 7..... Is every idiot light in the history of idiot lights lit on that dash too?
These engines are not known for bottom end issues and a spun bearing i would expect some sort of glitter in the oil. I would be quite surprised if it was a bottom end failure of any kind.
If it is the AFM lifter not only will the lifter be toast the cam will be wiped out and need to be replaced GM also recommends replacing the VLOM as well. My suggestion as someone that has owned 3 of these disasters. Put in a Texas speed delete kit and get rid of that AFM crap entirely. Since this truck has been modded already i bet this customer would love a hotter aftermarket cam too.... Money wise its about the same as factory parts but the engine will be so much more reliable long term.

You commented about that little box on the intake air sensor last episode. Its a translation box that adjusts the values, since the new pipes are bigger the pressure in them are lower than stock. So you need that box so the ECU can make sense of the new values otherwise you'd have to put a flow restrictor in the intake tube to accelerate the air past the sensor which defeats the purpose of that whole Banks system :P

The question I have always had regarding such a parts replacement has to do with pipe/component sizes. You mention the increased air flow by increasing the diameter of the pipes. I understand the concept but wonder how much of an increase in air volume you get when you are going from a 2" turbo outlet into a 3" pipe only to convert it back to a 2" inlet on the intercooler, then convert the intercooler outlet back to a 3" pipe only to neck it back down to 2" for the turbo inlet. To really improve the air flow, wouldn't you need to change everything in the path to 3"? A different turbo and intercooler with a 3" pathway would be able to take advantage of the 3" pipes you are adding. Of course, making that sort of change would be very expensive.

    • @hopefultraveller1
      @hopefultraveller1 Год назад +4

The pipes being larger than the entry and exit flanges may cause turbulence and be LESS efficient for flow, particularly since the flange edges are so blunt. This mod is therefore more about cosmetics than refinement or improvement, which is a shame - if the other components were upgraded as grandpalarry suggests, THAT could really be something!

The intake alone is "snake oil" if you consider snake oil doing an upgrade 1/2 way. You can dump as much air as you want into the intake, if you can't supply enough extra gas and then exhaust it, it doesn't matter. Same applies for turbos.

I like the power side of diesels but also the economy side as well. There's a lot to be said about getting 40 mpg in a 4200 pound, 20 foot long car with a 5.7 liter diesel V8 and a 23 gallon fuel capacity (my friend's 82 Olds Toronado diesel), or 70 mpg in a small hatchback (Chevette/I-Mark diesel). And these were entirely mechanical engines, no electronics at all. That's the other thing I love about old diesels, what other engine is there that requires no electricity to run, and can run on vegetable oil or used motor oil the same as it does on regular diesel. Love the 5.7 and 4.3 GM diesels especially, they have all of the sound characteristics of a vintage gasoline V8 or V6, but with the added diesel clatter.

Glad you feel better! While the turbo inlets and outlets are still the same size, the larger pipe should allow it to pull/exhaust more air IF IT CAN. that's probably the difference between whether something like this adds power or not, if the parts you don't replace can take advantage of the benefits made available by the ones you do. I noticed that the system re-uses the factory mass airflow sensor. I'm betting that cable that extended it to the harness also corrects for the reduced velocity/higher volume of air the sensor reads. Maybe :)

It's amazing to watch you work on some of these newer Chevy vehicles that will be still in great shape when living around there compared to in New York where the Chevy pickups have just over 100,000 miles on them and they're six or seven years old getting something done underneath where they might be lucky to last till 10 years old because of the rot from the salt

Does make you wonder why some mfgs choose not to use a more corrosion resistant steel, or better coatings for their products. The majority of the country sees snow and uses road salt, not just NY. Some vehicles do better with the salt (made better), so why have the others not changed? Because they know they will sell more cars if they fail sooner.

The solid lower pipe is better then a rubber hose but the rubber hose absorbs turbo pressure when the throttle is snapped open and then released. (No throttle plate involved) Works like a blow off valve. It sounded like the 5.3 had a miss when you had the camera near the tailpipe, at the engine it sounds like a roller on a lifter has piled up. We needed a listen down by the oil pan to get the full scope on the situation. Two Hurricanes down, hopefully if there's anymore they stay out at sea.

  • @SpecialedSpellcaster

Ray, that sounds like a roller lifter wheel is grinding on the camshaft. Livernois Motorsports sells 50 state legal kits to remove the AFM/DOD junk... or just piece the kit yourself and tune with HP Tuners. I've done a couple LS engines and the engine becomes far more reliable, responsive, with the same mileage, unless you get a bigger camshaft. Just make sure the second cam journal isn't grooved. If it is you'll need new cam bearings. Most likely it will need new cam bearings and you have to pull the engine anyways.

I kind of get some of the comments people make about it being snake oil and waste of money but it's only slightly true... everyone has to remember that it's only going to flow as fast as the smallest component will let it. In order to flow more air, you really need to increase the intercooler size, that is where your restriction is, hence the reducer to step down the pipe size.

I installed all the piping and an upgraded intercooler on my Focus ST, and improved my 1/4 mile drag time from 14.76 @ 93mph to 14.002 @ 99mph with no tune, just all intake breathing bolt ons. Stock exhaust too.

@@duckwacker8720 I’ve got the engine with the poor reputation. 6 liter powerestroke. I did the Banks mods over a decade ago. Everything to increase airflow, intake, boost tubes, intercooler and exhaust. I’m going on 18 years with original everything, turbo, injectors, head gaskets, EGR cooler, and valve. I did it all for engine longevity, lower EGTs, better performance and better mileage. I haven’t deleted anything, because I’m in California.

They build cars that just meet the MINIMUM standards at the lowest cost to them.

Great video Ray! Do you think you could snake in the lower hot side pipe without removing the ECM now that you have done one? I had a 2017 L5P and I blew the crimped connector next to the turbo outlet pulling a 15k 5th wheel in the middle of Nevada going up a steep grade, PIA. I limped to a NAPA auto parts store and got a T Bolt Clamp to replace the crimped on band and finished my trip. When I got back to my shop I ordered hot and cold Mishimoto pipes, never had another issue, truck had all the other Banks goodies on it except the exhaust, but I removed the restrictor in the tail pipe. Now I have a 2023 GMC Denali 3500 Dually. Put a derringer and I dash on after about 1,000 miles. With 8000 miles on the truck I had a cabover camper on it and towing a 16' deck over trailer with my built Jeep TJ on it and after pulling Togwotee Pass in Wyoming I blew the crimp fitting on the hot pipe!!!!! All I had with me to limp home was bailing wire and two rows of double wrap wire tightened down as much as possible was good to about 7 psi, go over and POOF off again. Limped home 150 miles since it was a Sunday, had to repair the connection 5 times. Got a new pipe from GM under warranty, but I don't trust it. I am thinking about the Banks hot and cold pipes too. I added the Banks ram air intake a couple thousand miles ago and WOW what a difference in regen frequency. I was regening every 225-250 miles towing my Jeep trailer or my 15k fifth wheel with little to no passive regeneration. Now since changing the intake I am getting upward of 700 miles between regens and while towing I can watch the soot level drop on my I dash, incredible. I am only at 12,000 miles now, so my factory air filter was very clean. Have you heard of anyone dynoing before and after the boost pipes with the derringer installed? There was a video a while back from Werhli Custom fab claiming over 60 hp by just adding the boost tubes on a 17-19 L5P, but I haven't seen a dyno test from Banks yet.

Regarding your physics comment: A wider air pipe is not *always* going to improve performance. The limiting factor is going to be the smallest surface area of your intake pipes -- so the pipes should ideally be as big as the surface area of your air box (for the turbo inlet) or the compressor outlet (for the hot side) respectively. Any bigger is going to yield diminishing results, as it will not increase air volume -- it may even lower boost or cause surging because the air has surface area to expand into.
The perfect situation is where your intake surface area is equal to the total surface area of your intake valves, this would mean the intake has no restriction along its length.
Obviously there's an advantage in sound and the engine bay looking a lot cooler with the silicone pipes as well.

    • @rodgraff1782

Yea, they spent around two years of testing and engineering for that diff cover. During R&D, Banks buys all of the competitions products, and test their products against them. They will only put out products, that will perform better than stock, and better than all of the competitiors products. I think Gale Banks knows a little more about how air behaves, then all of the wannabe physics professors, who say these products don’t improve airflow and performance, and are just for looks.

Hope you can give me a light on a problem with my motorcycle, she is a Kymco Scooter 500 c.c. Fuel Injection engine, everything works very well until the engine gets very hot on hot days, then the engine stalled on idle, if I am able to small throttle before the stalling the engine get normal idle RPMs but if the motor stalls is very hard to get it starting again, normally I had to wait until engine get some cold and starts at first crank.
Thanks a lot for all your help and great content. Regards From Colombia.

hey ray, before i call it a connecting rod failure i'd want to check a couple other things first, like pull the valve cover and check the rockers etc. i just think more info to actually confirm what the issue is. Yep it is internal no doubt and sounds really bad but i've seen broken rockers, bad cam lifters, it's just too hard to say till ya get a good look at it. usually a bad rod would be knocking but i guess it could squeel too heheh. it does sound pretty nearly though. would love to see the tear down to see what that actually is.
    You can dooo it!
