I have the same American Standard, 2013. Bought it new and threw flats in them. But I love knowing that they can still sound Rocking the way you play this one. The quality on these are great! 8 years in this has served me well!

I’ve been a bit different, always loved a P bass but never enough disposable $$ to drop on one but I discovered the ‘Player’ series (MIM) recently and it plays very, very much like this one seems to. Mine has a pau-ferro fretboard, rosewood replacement, which has an even tighter grain (I think anyway) than rosewood. Definitely worth a look, at well under half the price of American model I don’t think that extra expense is justified, obviously I might be a little biased but I have played both and really can’t tell the difference except the numbers on the price tag 👌
Damn, that sounds incredible. Even though play a Jazz bass most of the time with my current project for the versatility, I consider myself a P bass guy in my heart. I always miss that split coil sound whenever I solo the neck pickup on my Jazz. To your quality point at the end, those little details really add up. I've been gigging with cheap basses for so long that I've gotten weary of those minor annoyances. The uneven-ness of the tone knob drives me absolutely crazy because it makes it so hard to dial in. One of these days I'm going to treat myself to a proper nice bass and that'll be a good day.

I've had my Mexican Jazz bass since 1998 and love it. I got my USA Jazz in 2001. If anything ever happened to it, I'd probably quit playing. There is so much character to the way it plays, sounds and looks. As far as value for the money, Mexican is definitely the way to go. If you want a lifetime treasure, it's the American.
Totally! It's like they're not the best value for money initially... But if you intend on having it as a long term bass, it is!

Thanks for this review. I’ve got a lefty one of these with a rosewood fingerboard and yes it’s a dreamy bass. It exudes quality and a better lighter grade of alder than the MIM player bass, which is great for the standing performer.

I have Mexican, Japanese and American Fenders and the US made bass is by far the best, it isn’t even close. That is not to say the others are not any good, on the contrary, they are great basses but the American one is just so good. Yet another awesome video young man.
Awesome! Yeah value for money can sometimes be subjective if youre intending on having the one bass for a long time. I rarely get a Fender I don't like in some way but the American is a step up as you say! Cheers mate 😁
I've owned a rare old mix of basses over the years. My impression of US made vs Japanese vs Mexican Fenders vs the various Squier locations is often down to the "quality" of the wood. The Squier necks in particular don't feel as "robust". It's not a criticism in any way, it's just the way they are.
Yeah! I'd totally agree with that. My CV squiers are much lighter and you can feel that they don't resonate as well through the wood but they aren't bad by any means. Cheers Andy!
I have a 2004 Mexican P and I just put some Lollar pick ups and now it sounds better, I might throw on a high mass bridge. I had a Japanese one in 1995 and it felt better than a lot of American ones back then I actually tried.

I honestly don't care for a distorted bass channel at all but this bass pulls it off . Cool downward angle slap technique . I learned to to slap in an adjacent angle to the string but you pull it off better than I can .Excellent precision bass . Well worth the price . I would not pay the extra cash for a fender usa . Based on my experience .
Having owned an American Ultra, and a couple of MIM Fenders - a player and a vintera, the only thing I would say regarding value for money is that with the MIM stuff, I may want to upgrade the pickups at some point, but that's debatable.
On the American Ultra, everything was top of the line. You'd never want to, or really be able to, upgrade anything IMO.
I'd still say personally though that the MIM stuff is where the value is in the Fender line, especially used. And especially if you can get hold of something someone has already swapped out the pickups for something custom shop or equivalent, as generally speaking you don't pay for other people's upgrades.
Hey! Yeah I completely get where you're coming from. It's labour too, so if you're happy to do upgrades yourself, you may be better off getting something more affordable upgrading to the specs you like in order to get the best value 😊 thanks for your insight!
Hey Johnny how would you say this or the fender player series MIM hold up against the sterling sub ray24 that you reviewed. Never had a chance to play a ray 24 but I have played a sub ray 4 and really dug it. Any info you can provide is appreciated. Thanks in advance! Another killer video! Keep them coming!
Thanks Zach! From sound demos, the Ray24 has a much better sounding pickup and preamp imo. Which player series model are you referring to? Sound wise I feel like any stingray humbucking bass is quite different to a Fender but in terms of quality, the Ray24 is definitely on par with the players! If comparing to the P bass, the Ray neck is a lot slimmer but not as slim as a jazz? Not sure if any of this helps, but I really like the Ray24CA!

Nice edit to bring up the quality of the hardware and pots in the American Standards. My Matt Freeman bass always has loose hardware. I picked up an American Standard a while ago for $700 and it's my number one bass. Would I purchase a new one? Yes but only with a roasted maple neck and Custom Shop '58 pickup, and tort gotta have tort.

They both are quality instruments but I think the maple had more bite and the rosewood a warmer tone. Best basses I've ever played although a stingray was close but not as sexy as a fender lol.
I think a good halfway point between the Mexican and American made Fenders are the Highway One and American Special. These are also discontinued but I think worth checking out if you can find them. I have a Highway One P and Jazz and they're easily my favorite basses. Great demo!

Man, great video. I have the same model but mine it’s 2015 and have a rosewood fingerboard, I really love it, good electronics, great wood, neck feels comfortable but to be honest, I really don’t like the sustain on this bass, it’s simple, other basses I have played have a better sustain on it having a non “high mass bridges” on them, what do you think?
Oh thats strange, I don't remember any sustain issues on this one. Can come down to body wood, the nut, setup. Are you using the same strings across the basses? Cheers!
@@JonnyDibble yes, everything is fine, most of the times I use Dunlop or DR roundwounds 45-105, but I have used Rotosound as well, setup and string height is okay, I wanna try with a fat finger…
I like Fender but I don’t know that I’d spend a ton of money on one.
G&L is generally cheaper and similar to Fender.
Only better made and with more options. But that’s just my preference.

I still haven't tried a G&L! Trying to get one of the £400 tribute jazz basses on the channel ☺ There's just something about their P models that don't sit well with me though, I think it's the body shape 🤔 Sadly I've just borrowed this bass so it had to go back to its owner! 😭 Cheers!
I did fork out for an American Fender P around 2010'ish. It's my most expensive bass by far (paid around £670 back then). Has a great punchy sound, pretty straight forward ...agree about the neck it's very nice however mine had/has probably the worst fret ends out of all basses. My cheaper basses, even a very cheap chinese Rik copy is better in this respect. It also is very neck heavy and constantly needs lifting. However still my keepy bass but not my most played.

I think the QC in all of the guitars at every price point are improving. Squiers are seen more as a lower end affordable student guitar, where as Mexican made are more budget oriented with better hardware. American made are for those people who country of origin matter more. I know that for some people, having an American made guitar is a lot more prestigious than a Mexican made one. When the economy is going well where someone lives, they'll probably be more willing to spend a little bit more on a more prestigious instrument. I have an American Elite guitar because country of origin matters to me.
Agree! You can get phenomenal value instruments around the £200‐300 mark nowadays. As well as cheaper components, the labour cost has such a big impact and the mass production. American made guitars will have more attention to detail and more "hands on" so the QC will natural be better 😊 I find guitar manufacturers quite interesting! Thanks for checking it out 😁
Most of the basses would sound good if not great through amp/cab sims. It would have been good to hear the bass alone without the HX, also, a comparison with the Squier Pbass would have been good too.
I need to remember to showcase the DI signal more! The Squier has aftermarket pickuos in it atm, going to change them back though soon so I can make some fair comparisons! Thanks ☺
I've had many Squier(I got 6 now) mexican Fenders,I've wanted an American fender for years,I finally got a 1999 Standard PJ. Hen I got it I was a bit disappointed,their not. Much different than a higher end Squier. And my biggest complaint that I can't explain us how many strings I break on my American,I've had it 3 months and broke 4 strings, that's insane! I have a Squier affinity P that has 2 year old flats on it,never broke a string on it EVER. THE biggest difference is the electronics,if I did it over again I'd go buy a high end Squier it cheap Mexi and put all american pickups ,pots,and wiring,end up with the same thing for a few hundred less. I'm not concerned with retaining value or anything 🤟🤟 Btw that looks just like my American on mines a PJ with rosewood board

American Standard was updated to "American Professional". And yes they are noticeably better all around than the Mexican basses. Best value is to get a used one, then your resale value matches what you paid.
Subtle improvements all round that make a difference! Absolutely, I almost exclusively shop on the used market and cam tell these definitely hold their value 👍
@@JonnyDibble here in Europe the going price for a 2nd hand MIM p bass is 600-700 euros, my MIA 2de hand was 950 with case, no upgrades needed so for 250 extra I would say go second hand, assuming the bass is in top order.

That bass sounds great. I’ve been looking at a vintera 50s P bass myself. My bass journey started with a p. I’ve since grown to love the sound of a stingray. A few videos ago I mentioned having a p/p Ibanez destroyer. Any interest in it?

@@JonnyDibble yeah I’ve got my eye on the seafoam green model. The double p can get pretty funky. The neck solo’d is pretty beefy. I put in two Seymour Duncan quarter pound p pickups with the bridge pickup reversed.
@@JonnyDibble I got the blonde one and it's really great. Plays really fun, I like the neck shape and dimensions but could use some light fret work to get it really smooth feeling. One thing that I found strange is that the blonde model gold anodized pickguard doesnt come pre drilled with the tug bar and pickup cover holes. However, the red and green models do feature the pre drilled holes on the anodized pickguard.
I've played a LOT of brand new Fender basses (US, Mex, JPN) and I'm astonished at how many of them are so poorly setup. I don't know how they leave the factory like that.
Oh no! Sounds like they're being rushed? Maybe it a staffing thing in recent times? 🤔 Don't know but that's definitely unacceptable when you're getting beyond the player series!
Agree, I picked up a Player P (MiM) recently, and I could tell in the store its factory setup wasn't great. It sounded like the business, but played very average. About an hour after getting it home I had it smoothed out. Doesn't play as stellar as the Ultra I played side-by-side, but the Player is also about 2.5x less expensive, which was ultimately a factor.
How is Fender supposed to know your playing preferences for one of their line instruments, homeslice? The idea that an instrument can be setup to meet every players preferences off of a line is a total myth. Its best they leave the factory with plenty of material to sculpt with in the nut, general ballpark pickup height, general ballpark bridge configuration and some neck relief. All of which are not meant to represent the dialed in version of that specific bass..where everything is in balanced harmony. It sounds like you're going to a brick and mortar guitar shop that has zero idea what they're actually doing when they receive a new bass other than just slap it up on a wall and then blame Fender for all the things they didnt do but should have. The most important thing of those things they didnt do was inform you...the customer...that they were lazy and didn't do a thing to help sell this instrument to the general public.
I've never seen a situation where a market was this awesome to buy a quality guitar or bass in...its literally unprecedented the level of quality you can get for even 500 bucks...and yet the brick and mortar stores are filled with the stunningly clueless attempting to sell guitars like one would a microwave...effectively shooting their future jobs squarely in the foot. Super strange times.
i used to play only active humbucker basses when i started playing bass. as i got older and my taste of music and playing advanced, i was getting more and more into passive"classical style" basses like the p bass...right now the p Bass is for me THE bass to go...leo build something perfect...can you make something that is perfect better?! no...because its already perfect:)...i played a american performer before, those are excelent for the price! but i think there are a few mexican made series or lets say basses that can take on the American counterpart....my nate mendel and vintera precision are definetly 2 great examples! when the fret ends are polished nicely, they are superb! for years i was a bit like you: dont want to spend so much money on basses, for some time now, my mind changed a bit: save up longer, and get a more costly nicer build bass...still saving up for that custom Sandberg:) ....its friday, you can tell by the amount of words i wrote with my mobile😅cheers from Germany;)

Replacing the pots (with CTS), capacitor, and jack (with Switchcraft) on a Squier with higher-grade components makes a lot of sense for those so inclined. Not so on a US bass.
For sure! A lot of the money you're spending for US models is the labour so if you're happy upgrading the Squier yourself, it's definitely more cost effective! Thanks for checking it out 😊
Hi Jonny. I bought a brand new Fender American Performer pj bass, it had hairline cracks in the finish at the neck joint and around screws and other flaws. It sounds great but 1200 Euros , not worth it!

@@JonnyDibble Hi Jonny, sorry I am late answering you! I kept the bass. I heard Fender QC can be hit or miss at times. I love how it sounds, I can live with the flaws. I bought a Musicman Stingray with a roasted maple neck a few weeks ago and it is perfection! I can stick the Fender in a gig bag and travel without worrying too much if things get rough. Thanks for replying, hope you are settling in to your new surroundings!
How does this compare to the Yamaha BB734A?

I tested a lovely looking Squier CV P bass and then a Mex Fender P bass and they were WORLDS apart. The Squier had a horrible neck and the pickups sounded ass, nothing about it felt well made (I do have Squier VM basses and they are great!). Needless to say I bought my Mex P the next day 😅
@@deceptishaun9931 aw that SUCKS! I way preferred the CV when I compared them in the shop. I guess that's the advice though, got to test them to make sure you don't get a bad one! Glad you got the right one 👊
@@JonnyDibble It would be super interesting to see a comparison of an old Chinese Squier CV and a new Indonesian-made one. Many people say the old ones were way better, but you seem to love your indo CV P. Just an idea :)

Not necessarily! I didn't know they made those in Mexico though!

@@wayne6777 so far i have 0 complaints, its heavy due to the build but the tone is just outstanding. You wont get all of Harris's tone without his signature strings though which also sucks cuz they like die really really quick due to them being flats
I have owned Warwicks, Ibanez, currently own Spectors, Washburns.. but I always drift back to a P bass.
There's just something about that classic mid range growl that suits every mix 🤤
@@JonnyDibble You dont have to think with them. One volume, one perfectly placed and voiced pickup - no finding "sweet spots" or messing with Bass middle and Treble pots. Turn up, plug in, play, sound good. I love Jazz's looks wise but I dont get on with their necks.
I put a lollar pickup with a 920D wiring harness in a Squier and it kills!

Sound wise I think the Fender maybe takes the lead a bit. I think feel and features goes to the Sire though. Considering it's like £800 cheaper too...
I just bought a Harley Benton PJ-74 VW Vintage Series for £162 from Thomann (Thanks to Brexit and rip-off import charges, the price swelled to just over £200 - Rule Brit's anus!) However, politics aside; I bought this bass for a mod project. I have already replaced the plastic nut with a bone one. The Roswell pickups will go as I'm a bit fussy although to be fair, the p-bass pu is perfectly fine for now, the j-bass pu in the bridge is thin-sounding but again, I'm interested in the 'Precision' aspect of the instrument. I had to shield the elecs cavity as there was a lot of noise - now, just the sound of cheap pots (again, functional) but they'll be going anyway. The build quality of the rest of instrument is surprisingly sound. I love the neck profile, NOT a baseball bat, somewhat 'jazz-like' although 42mm at the nut and a 'D' profile. It feels comfortable but be warned, you'll have to use a fret file for a few of the fret edges - not too well finished. At the moment, I've set the bass up with a low action and it's playing really well. The hardware is ok - bridge works fine and the tuners are ok, not a priority to change yet but the change will come. I estimate that once I've replaced the pickups and probably the potentiometers, I'll be looking at a really bang-up bass for under £450. I would be interested to see what you think of above. I was a little dismissive of HB until I tried a couple but like yourself Jonny, I like a good 'bang-for-a-buck' and as I say, I specifically bought this instrument with a modification project in mind. so i need a bass. i play in a pub band playing alot of different genres. whats the most versatile bass i can get? like mid price range
If you're buying new, I'd say a Mexican jazz bass or maybe a PJ bass? Then again a P bass, despite only having the single pickup, is incredibly diverse in terms of genre! But if you prefer a slimmer neck, go for the jazz bass. Player series is around £600 new, Squier classic vibe is also very good (£350) but I'd recommend trying one out in a shop first 😊

Ya know... come to think of it... I picked up my first bass around 1991 and I have yet to play a Fender or Squier. They have never struck me as metal enough. They sound great but are just too vanilla looking.

The p with rounds and pick style sounds killer for punk and rock. And it does get pretty fat with the tone rolled off fingerstyle.

Yes USA are better overall, it was better tone, it will stay in tune , the setup will be good for much more time, but the prices are not good, even second hand their stupid expensive
Im getting my first fender bass which is a mexican made... Everyone keeps telling me its a bad bass but i really dont have that kind of money for an American fender... Im already getting bankrupt to get this one 😅 anyway.... You guys reallly think a Mexican standard fender is a bad bass or what (its not player series i think its 2017 or 2016 idk the specific year but i KNOW its not a playet series jazz bass) cheers♥️🍻
Congrats on the first Fender! Chances are it won't be a bad bass. Don't listen to anyone that just calls all Mexican basses bad because they clearly must've just had 1 bad experience! They can be absolute work horses. More likely to get a lemon compared to American, thats just the whole thing around the labour and quality control but I wouldn't go as far as to brand them all as bad in the slightest! 😊
@@JonnyDibble i was a yamaha guy all the way i played bass my entire life... But fender was always like safe spot cause i had a squier vm and o loved it but had to sell it veeeeery cheap... Vintage bridges give a vintage tone .... high mass bridges are overrated
Hi-mass is good if you want a bit if extra sustain and good for modern sounding basses, I find that they add a bit of extra bite but at the same time, overall I do prefer a vintage style bridge? The sort of hybrid on here though is excellent 👌
@@JonnyDibble agreed ... but I’ve never needed a note to sustain that long where it would make a difference... I used to go on about hi mass bridges until I got a Moollon bass ... it’s still the wood that makes the thing sound good ... sustain is amazing .. on the vintage style bridge ...
There's no rocket science involved in solid body instruments making. Everybody, everywhere is able to make every piece of a bass and assemble it at a low factory cost. The difference in price is driven by the difference in salary between a chinese or mexican, or indonesian factory worker and an american one, or by the "mojo" of the brand, much more than by what's really inside the object itself. Anyway, if you want something that maintain its value, you're better off with a used bass, and you must absolutely avoid any kind of "fake old stuff", "custom shop" "roadworn" jackshit, that is always insanely overpriced.
Yeah for sure. It's mostly all down to labour costs! There are more premium components to these basses, but yeah I would always go second hand!
