Exact same situation. 40.. kids and life but .. novice player but I'm gunna go big and grab the ultra lol. I want the traditional p but to add the high ends with the j pick ups. Cheers

Nice, your excitement is contagious and jumps off the screen! That is a sweet bass, digging the string-thru body, and the Miami Blue color kills it... be lyin' if I said I wasn't envious. :) My two kids, now adults, were born with the gift of playing music. As I head into my "retirement" years, I decided a few weeks ago to learn how to play music. So I dug out my best Dee Dee Ramone T-shirt, and picked up a MiM Cosmic Jade Fender PJ Base at my local music store... my skills totally suck, but having blast leaning how to play bass. Music keeps you young, Rock On!
Thanks Darin! I've had to learn not to let my skills dictate my enjoyment. I started playing guitar 21 years ago, and I don't think there's anyone on the planet who would guess I've been playing that long because I sure don't sound like it. But it's fun! Something about this bass is really special though because it's totally "clicked" with me. I don't think I've put in this much consistent practice time since high school and I've definitely seen progress even in only a few short weeks.
Fender American Jazz bass - it's been my go-to instrument for the last 15 years. I play it live at least once / month. I love the sound of Fender basses!
That is an awesome Fender Precision Bass, the range of colors they did were really cool for the American Professional 2 series. I recently bought a Fender Vintera 50s precision bass, I was also looking at the American pro 2 and the American Original. I went with the Vintera mainly because I always wanted a p bass with the nut width of the 50s. From what I know the Ensenada Mexico factory is only 150 miles from the California factory. Sweetwater is great, I’m in Chicago so when I order instruments from there they arrive the next day! Love the punk rock lines, great playing!!!
I’m envious of your next day deliveries 😁 Mexican Fenders have been great in my experience. My first “real” guitar was a MIM Standard Telecaster that I bought 20 years ago and it’s still going strong. I love that thing. The Vintera series is super cool too!
Sweetwater is the best, superb customer service. I just got the VXLR Pro adapter for the VideoMic GO ii. Nothing like your early Christmas present. I'm happy for you. Joy is a must. A montage with bass, guitar, and drums could be a fun video to make.
I can't tell you how much I love this bass. I'ts rekindled my interest in music in a way that I havne't felt for a long time (maybe because it's so different from guitar and drums). It's also sent me down a huge Fender history rabbit hole. The company was founded in the same town my mom and a lot of family are from, so it's been interesting to read about where it all came from.

I have very similar workflows, looking at buying a new house so would love some inspiration for office / studio ideas that works for all my music (drum kit and keys) plus all the camera gear as well as WFH setup for the day job.*
Hey perfect timing! I just saw your comment today and uploaded a studio tour video on my main channel yesterday! ruclips.net/video/EPqxRz1RT-A/видео.html
Lol.. I so much enjoyed your video on your new p bass. I order from sweet water all the time . Watching you enjoy your bass made me feel like feel when I get one. Thanks for sharing your fender moment.
Glad you enjoyed it! This thing has been incredibly fun. I even enrolled in a bass course and have actually been able to start learning a bit of theory for the first time.
I’d been playing about 7 years, I started college in 2020 studying music and decided to buy the fender classic PJ bass. Best investment of money I’ve made, they last a life time.
It really sounds great, especially with other instruments. I think I've heard that it's the most frequently recorded bass in the world, and I totally understand why.
The American professional 2 are really nice. One day I'll own one. If my vacation in spring falls through, I may bite the bullet then and get one. I'll justify it by saying it's what I would've spent on an economy seat and Airbnb for 2 weeks. My ride or die is a 2020 Fender Player's P bass in Tidepool Blue. I call it Pi. The serial number ends in 314. It's not a P bass, it's a Pi bass! I made him my own. The only original parts are the body and neck.
Oooh, I like the name! I've been trying to think of a name for mine, but haven't come up with one yet. It needs to be something cool and organic like that. Tidepool is also a great color choice!
I got my Ernie ball musicman a couple years ago, I was like… wow, this is a REAL BASS lol (not that cheaper stuff doesn’t get the job done, but, you know what I mean lol)
There is no substitute for the new Fender Precision ll Professional bass. I bought one in dark night blue. The sound of Fender’s V-Mod pickups is richer than any bass in existence.
It should be noted that the standard Fender Precision bass does NOT have the V-Mod pickups on the Precision ll professional, which utilizes different amounts of alnico in the pickups, that pick up a wider range of sound. There is no substitute for the sound, not even the Fender Standard Precision bass.
TomBuck2!! Judging what you say about not being a good bass player, may I suggest that your left hand (the one on the neck of the bass) you need practice with using all 4 of your fingers!! Including your "pinky" to play on your bass!!
I think it depends on the model, but this one allows for both. Supposedly running them through the body gives more sustain (which seems to be true because the notes will ring out forever haha).
So we saw it before him in the video but the video was posted after he saw it in person…so did we see it first or did he see it first? I would name the bass Schroedinger.
I think I’d definitely like to try a Jazz Bass at some point. I like Mark Hoppus’ idea of putting P Bass pickups in a J body. My Fender Sixty-Six guitar has a small Jazz Bass body and it’s ridiculously comfy.
@@TOMBUCK2 The Mark Hoppus Fender signature bass was one of the coolest guitars. A jazz bass body with a precision neck and the p bass pickups. I know they have not been in production for awhile now and the used market prices can be pretty high. I am pretty sure that he recorded Enema with that bass, such a killer tone he had on that record.
I own 5 different model's of these SX brand of basses and all of my SX basses bodies are all made of solid ALDER wood and NOT PLY WOOD ! I have done some routing in some of these bodies and I can attest that they are solid ALDER hardwood and NOT PLY WOOD. Replace the p-up and do a propef set up as well as dress the fret ends and that bass will work as well as the fender for many years !
I really like everything about the SX except for the pickups (which literally drew blood when I got it). I’ve tried sanding them down a bit, but I’ve hit the limit of what I can do without damaging anything, and the neck is fantastic so I’d hate to mess it up in any way.
@@TOMBUCK2 also, congrats on 200 subs, I know you don’t care about numbers with this channel, but that means there are 200 people who want to see more of an in-depth person, and get to know you better! So congratulations
Yeah, the price is steep, but it' definitely been worth it. I've now put several hundred hours on it and it's fantastic. Hard to believe, but it's actually stopped me from wanting any other basses (so maybe it ends up being a good deal because of that? 😁)
Congratulations I totally identify with your purchase from Sweetwater, I bought a Fender Mustang p.j. from them as well, I like their attention to detail, have great fun enjoy and good luck.
Mine just shipped from Musicians friend, I have ordered from sweet water before but they were not going to have this in stock for about a year…. So I ordered a Jazz from them and a P (this exact model and color) from MF….
Hoping the best with your new bass. I had to return mine, with low quality. Body / neck joint was poorly made, leaving empty gap between neck and body on underside (credit card fitted in between). Also the platform for neck was wider than neck so it was visible from looking above… other than that great bass…
Oof, that's no good. My neck joint is nice and snug, but I'd definitely return it if something like that happened. Hopefully you were able to get one that's perfect for you.
my first bass was a peavy t-40 that was kinda ran through the ringer. I gave it away to a friend after i got a 1995 US Standard fender P-bass (back then (in 1996) they had two US models the standard and the deluxe) all i wanted was a standard US P bass so that is why i got it instead of the deluxe. It's still my "baby" as far as basses go. but i still kick my own ass today over giving away that peavy t-40. now those peavy t-40's are getting harder and more expensive to find.
@@TOMBUCK2 i can see how that might be true , but i've owned a few basses i don't regret getting rid of. one was some cheap off brand bass some one gave me , taht was just all around a horrible bass. the kind of shit you'd buy at sears for a kid. absolutely hated that thing. next was my 2002 warlock Platinum, also a horrible bass. you'd think a 400 dollar BC rich would have a little more polish other than binding on the body. but this thing was gnarly. as in fret end's that gnarled the hand, and a truss rod that didn't seem to do shit. each year the bass's neck got more and more bowed. and adjusting the truss rod made no impact to correcting it. to make matters worse it was always neck heavy , like headstock to the floor when you took your hands off the neck. i traded it to guitar center to cover the cost of getting my US fender's frets re-leveled , and recrowned (they were getting dented up after nearly 25 years of playing). it (the warlock) was a bass i liked at first , but grew to hate. then there was the bass i semi regret but not quite whole heartedly regret getting rid of. that is a 1976 Rickenbacker. these things do not age well. first teh frets started getting gnawed up. no easy fix , as rics require a complete re-fret when their frets get ate up because of the tiny fret wire they use there's nothing to relevel and recrown. on top of that the neck was starting to get the infamous rickenbacker twist. to get that thing back to working order would have costed me 700-800 dollars. that's about 100-200 bucks more than what i paid for it. I loved the instrument when it functioned ... but when it started having issues my love kinda died. My other instruments the 26 year old 1995 US p bass, my steve harris signature pbass , and my tom araya Ta-500 have all been long lasting instruments taht only need light maintance, every few years to keep tip top. tweek the truss rod a little here and there as the seasons cause wood expansion and retraction. and fret crowning jobs are usually good for 10-15 years with how much i play them so that's not even a big issue as one of the basses is not even ten years old yet (the steve harris one is a 2015 bass). but yeah that peavy t-40 still gets me those things are real solid basses and now that they are all vintage unproduced models their prices for them on ebay and vintage sellers is going up , up and up. just 5 years ago you could still find them for as low as 350 on ebay ,and as high as 600. now the lowest price i seen was 750 for one that was repainted and had it's metal nut replaced with a regular nut (the solid steel nut is one of the great features of the peavy t-40) and it was missing it's hard shell case. The highest i've seen them go for now is like 2,500 for a near mint 78 model with it's OG case.
Definitely worth it! I was original,y going to get the Mexican one in the super cool orange color, but decided to go for this and make it my “forever bass.” The quality is unreal.
Beautiful bass really nice colour. I bought an limited edition electron green p bass (mim) recently as an upgrade to using ( very good for the price ) squire jazz and p bass and i absolutely love it. It also has the 75th anniversary logo on the back of the head stock. It sounds amazing even though I am not very good but i enjoy playing along with drums courtesy of youtube on a saturday night after a few beers of course to songs i make up myself with vocals. You don't need to be good or in a band to enjoy these beauties. My bass sound is somewhere between Bruce Foxton from The Jam and JJ Burnell from The Stranglers.
This bass has been so great! I enrolled in an online course back in May and now I feel MUCH better about my playing abilities. I can even read music on a basic level 😎 ...err, I mean "bass-ic" level.
Dude when u come up to New York again, we need to jam! LOL I got a jam room here. Some frickin Ramones songs and some blink too! Jamming in an apt building is an art, how loud is too loud? I figured this out over like 4 years of living here 🤓🤓
Loved the video! I'm looking into getting a similar bass soon as well. I may make a video similar to yours. Very well done, and I appreciate the extra information from where you purchased it. It's huge investment, and where you buy it from matters.
Thanks Jose! It's coming up on a year with the bass and it's holding up super well. Such a great instrument! I'm happy to report that I've been able to put hundreds of hours of practice into it 👍
@@TOMBUCK2 That's really great! I'm very glad that it has worked out well for you. I actually ended up getting a different bass. Mainly because O was concerned with some QC issues in ones of that model that I saw at my local GC.
Beautiful Bass and great video! I have played for the last 40 years. Always get the best you can afford. If it means sacrificing to do it...then do it. For me with Fender...American was always the way to go. If you want something that you have never had before...then you have to do something you have never done before to get it. I learned patience in the beginning and saved and it has always payed off. Get the best that feels right for you when you play it. Yes, it more than likely will mean that it will much much cost more $$$ than the others. There is a reason for it though!
It’s a tough lesson to learn, but you’re absolutely right. I’ve got no immediate plans for any new instruments, but you know how that goes, so if the time comes I’d love to stick with the USA models.
how you progressed with bass sounds very much like how I did. I still have yet to buy my dream bass... I still need to sort what would be my dream bass :)
I can’t tell you how much I’ve been loving this one. I’ve even started taking a course to learn proper techniques and stuff, which has been super fun. It’s gotten to the point where I have to actively take days off here and there to give my wrists a rest 😁
The 24hr thing isn't 100% correct. It's really only for instruments going from say winter to summer conditions. Really only applies to nitro finishes too. Realistically it only takes 2hrs or so to get up temp in that scenario.
Alright, so I have been following your other channel and started following this one today. Crossover question, would the Rode Podmic be good for recording guitar (electric and acoustic) into the Rodecaster? Also, anyone that mistook that headstock for a legit P-Bass doesn't know instruments...
It's funny because I was literally JUST talking to someone about using the PodMic for instruments. It really depends on your amp. The PodMic is surprisingly good at bass drums because it cuts out some of the muddiness, so if your tone has a lot of low end, it might be a neat choice. Also, there have been so many times people called the SX a p bass and I didn't wan't to be the "Um actually..." guy so I just let it go 😁
It’s called “Miami Blue” and it’s the strangest color because it looks different under different lights and it’s almost impossible to take an accurate photo of it. But that’s part of why I love it 😁
Congratulations! I ordered a Fender player series precision bass which is Mexican made. On the box there is a sticker from San Bernardino…interesting. I thought American made come from San Bernardino not Mexican.
Lol~ I have a black explorer bass from Rondo~ a Brice~ new for $150~ It weighs like 13 lbs & plays horribly, but It looks good in photos~ wish I cold send you a pic
Haha, I'm sure I've seen it on their site! Seems like inventory is limited at the moment, but I've been constantly checking their models for the past 6 or 7 years because you never know what they're going to add.
I got 2 American P Basses, a Duff- Fender P-J Bass, and 3 Mexican Players P Basses. I play the Mexican ones more than the American. They feel better to me
Haha, I know. I had to concisely not make videos about the bass for a while to avoid it from becoming specifically a music channel (not that that'd be bad, I just don't want that for this).
I often hear people say that instrument don't matter as great guitarist/bassist can make even a 200 $ squier sound great but that's the difference, they are already great player. but i can guarantee you that if you start on a instrument with awful ergonomic, with a chonky ass neck, fretbuzz, and bad sound then you would not progress as muck as a really well built instrument. you will just feel discourage a lot of the time. nowadays you can have cheap squier or sire for not that much money and just go to your local luthier to fix the trussroad, action, and a few fret if you are a beginner that don't know much, trust me it will be night and days. don't be like 15 years old me, with a cheap 50€ bass, with the highest action you've ever seen, the most god forsaken fretjob ever, i didn't know any better so i just thought that all bass were that way so i really suffer on that bass, destroy my wrist on it and some technique were impossible to do ( forget tapping and slap with that action).
That 24 hours is bullsiet. Once it leaves Sweetwater, UPS or FedEx will store in some non climate controlled warehouse. Depending how far the destination, your bass or guitar will be held at multiple storage warehouse hubs. Then it will be placed in a delivery vehicle subjected to outdoor conditions. You don’t think your instrument has changed since it left Sweetwater? You know many touring musicians will always require their instruments to be setup at every different venues they play at all over the country because of CLIMATE CHANGES! I live in Arizona and by the time I receive my bass, the action is super high and will need to set up to my preference. That 55 point Sweetwater inspection is just a selling gimmick and bullshiet.

There is no substitute for the sound, not even the Fender Standard Precision bass.
No normal person ever waits 24 hours lol, awesome bass
That would definitely take a monumental amount of self discipline.
Hell yeah, blink cover
As a bass player, I’m SUPER jelly! I have a Mexican P Bass, which is still great, but can’t compare to American.
All of my other Fenders are MIM and they’re outstanding. But wow- this one really is a different level 🤯
TomBuck2!! Judging what you say about not being a good bass player, may I suggest that your left hand (the one on the neck of the bass) you need practice with using all 4 of your fingers!! Including your "pinky" to play on your bass!!
100% you're right. I've really put a lot of time into practicing over the past year and fortunately my pinky is a lot stronger now!
Congratulations 🎊 👏 💐 🥳 It's a beautiful bass 🔊 guitar.
Thank you very much! It's been a total joy to have.
wow! I did not know I could put the strings through the body or bridge on my P-bass.
Freeman is one of the best!!
So cool. I'm more a Jazz bass fan but that is one beautiful bass. Can't wait to hear some Buck bangers in the near future.
That Miami Blue is gorgeous!
It's really tough to take photos/videos of accurately, but it really is spectacular in person.
I’m so early that the HD version hasn’t even uploaded 😂 still love the video! And love all the unintended bass and wood puns
No scheduling ahead on this channel! Everything is published right away, even before it processes 😁
@@TOMBUCK2 also, congrats on 200 subs, I know you don’t care about numbers with this channel, but that means there are 200 people who want to see more of an in-depth person, and get to know you better! So congratulations
I really like that color. Looks like my BC Rich Gorilla guitar.
I just don't know about 2k for a bass...
Yeah, the price is steep, but it' definitely been worth it. I've now put several hundred hours on it and it's fantastic. Hard to believe, but it's actually stopped me from wanting any other basses (so maybe it ends up being a good deal because of that? 😁)
@@TOMBUCK2 That is a good way to look at it. You found your Elanor.
Congratulations I totally identify with your purchase from Sweetwater, I bought a Fender Mustang p.j. from them as well, I like their attention to detail, have great fun enjoy and good luck.
That’s awesome! Hope you’re enjoying your bass too.
@@TOMBUCK2 Oh for sure play ever chance I get, practice makes 👌 I want to be bad ass I can be😎
Mine just shipped from Musicians friend, I have ordered from sweet water before but they were not going to have this in stock for about a year…. So I ordered a Jazz from them and a P (this exact model and color) from MF….
Nice! Hope you like it. Seems like they’re getting harder to find lately.
I have the Jazz Bass of the same model, it’s really nice to play and sounds great. Enjoy 😄
It was very tough to decide between the two, but the Jazz version is beautiful. I especially like the one with the rosewood fretboard.
I've learned the hard way that regret seems to follow any time an instrument is given away/sold. 🤦🏻♂️
Nice bass dude, I want my first bass to be fender precision. Someday I’ll get one soon
RUclips drums are great band mates. Electron Green is an awesome color. Glad you’re enjoying your bass!
I'm in the same boat. Have a OK bass but want better. I am torn between the USA Fender and a G&L
I feel like you can’t go wrong with either!
What did you end up getting?
Awesome, enjoy it!!!!!!!
so nice abd I love the back stories
This bass has been so great! I enrolled in an online course back in May and now I feel MUCH better about my playing abilities. I can even read music on a basic level 😎
...err, I mean "bass-ic" level.
i just picked one up too!! i put some flat wounds on it, and it's INCREDIBLE!!
Ahh nice! I’ve been thinking of putting flatwounds on my old bass so that I can try both.
@@TOMBUCK2 definitely worth it!!!!!!!!!
Dude when u come up to New York again, we need to jam! LOL I got a jam room here. Some frickin Ramones songs and some blink too! Jamming in an apt building is an art, how loud is too loud? I figured this out over like 4 years of living here 🤓🤓
I would love this. Plus if neighbors complain, I’ll be gone by then. 😬
Mainly because O was concerned with some QC issues in ones of that model that I saw at my local GC.
beautiful bass, love the color and tone, enjoy the instrument
Thanks Ricardo! It plays like a dream.
No Sweetwater candy bag ? Nice bass regardlees !
Don't worry! There was one buried in the bottom of the box and it was thoroughly enjoyed.
Well said. It's hard to even give cheap gear away.
Nice. Base. Congrats.
Thanks!
Congrats on your new Bass 🎉
Thank you! It’s been so much fun to play. I even started a bass course to try and learn better technique. 👍
I love your mouse mat and desktop wallpaper. Can you share where you got each?
The brand is "GDBT" on Amazon. They have a ton of different patterns and stuff.
@@TOMBUCK2 thanks!
how you progressed with bass sounds very much like how I did.
I'd say bleeding fingers is a big issue
Nice! Love the bass! But did you still get the Sweetwater candy in the box?
Honestly…I don’t think there was any candy in there!
Hey, I'm your new teacher. USE YOUR PINKY!! :P:P:P:P
Congrats buddy-good work.
Thank you!
The 24hr thing isn't 100% correct. It's really only for instruments going from say winter to summer conditions. Really only applies to nitro finishes too. Realistically it only takes 2hrs or so to get up temp in that scenario.
That’s what I was hoping. I know nitro finishes can be really sensitive, but luckily I didn’t need to worry about that here.
Also, there have been so many times people called the SX a p bass and I didn't wan't to be the "Um actually..." guy so I just let it go 😁
@@TOMBUCK2 Thanks, probably not my best option then. I'm using a Fender Harvard clone for electric. They are fairly midrangey...
Damn I need that pro 2 jazz or p. I’ve got two pros but I want them pro 2’s.
It’s such a nice instrument! I’m totally blown away by the quality.
Back here again, still no Pro 2’s. Will update when that changes.
I don’t know anything about basses but that color is my very very fave!! And it sounds great and I’m so glad you’re having fun!
It’s called “Miami Blue” and it’s the strangest color because it looks different under different lights and it’s almost impossible to take an accurate photo of it. But that’s part of why I love it 😁
Train to fret with your pinky more, that would make it easier and more fun later!
I’ve been working on that over the past month and it’s come a long way thankfully 👍
Congratulations!
I ordered a Fender player series precision bass which is Mexican made. On the box there is a sticker from San Bernardino…interesting. I thought American made come from San Bernardino not Mexican.
Maybe they all get shipped out through the same place? Either way our guitars went on similar journeys 😁
Very beautiful bass ❤️✊🇺🇸🎸
Thanks! It plays like a dream.
👍🏾
Cool bass! Up next: A fretless?
I don’t think I’ll ever be that brave 😁
Lol~ I have a black explorer bass from Rondo~ a Brice~ new for $150~ It weighs like 13 lbs & plays horribly, but It looks good in photos~ wish I cold send you a pic
Haha, I'm sure I've seen it on their site! Seems like inventory is limited at the moment, but I've been constantly checking their models for the past 6 or 7 years because you never know what they're going to add.
I got 2 American P Basses, a Duff- Fender P-J Bass, and 3 Mexican Players P Basses. I play the Mexican ones more than the American. They feel better to me
It’s always interesting how each guitar has a specific “feel”. I’ve got 5 MIM Fender guitars and they’re all great.
Thats why it's called a P - Bass ✌️😎✌️
By the look of the amount of views on this video I think there’s an audience for bass guitar videos ☺️
Haha, I know. I had to concisely not make videos about the bass for a while to avoid it from becoming specifically a music channel (not that that'd be bad, I just don't want that for this).
@@TOMBUCK2 Maybe a third channel is on the horizon? 😉
You’ve got me wanting to grab the bass instead of guitar next time I play. Sweet P-bass, congrats!
Thanks Jason! I feel as though I've been neglecting my guitars because I've pretty much only been playing the bass since it arrived.
Just curious. If it has the body shape and pickup of a precision bass. Why don't you consider it a precision bass?
Honestly it’s just because it’s not a Fender. 🤷🏻♂️
There’s no other bass that feels quite like a Fender.
What about the candy 🍬?
Don't worry, turns out it was buried in the box. I found it later and promptly consumed it all.
Nice bass.
Thanks 👍
Love the comment - if i want to sit in my bedroom and play blink 182 whats wrong with that
and i can't stand blink 182!
nice
Yep 100%. I’m sure there are diminishing returns between a $1000 and $1800 bass, but wow, a poor instrument can really be discouraging.
👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽
Mmmmmm such a yummy bass
It's so much fun!
Sounds like a p bass
Man I laugh all the time when people say it a big difference between a Mexican Fender and American Fender it's just funny.
I've got 5 MIM Fenders and I love them, but I can definitely see a difference in quality with the USA one now that I've had it for a few weeks.
@@TOMBUCK2 if you know, you know.
Do you still have that Miami blue bass
And what’s your full name and you have Instagram?
Absolutely I love my bass!
