I admire the fact that you give the same attention and care to root pruning your “weed” bonsais as you do your most prized specimens. Thanks, keep growing

I like that you try and work on different plants for bonsai. Keeps us inquisitive. Like being a kid again and exploring all possibilities. No. 1 rule in bonsai, I think, be a kid and explore and try different things. Great video.

To me, the bark matches the pot.
    Great composition!

Nice to see an Erin pot made it all the way to your neck of the woods. They are fantastic handmade pots. Harry Harrington is a big fan and uses his pots a lot.

They are very recognizable, many people in the Toronto club have them!!

I thought that only I had a Vcreeper as a bonsai!!!
Good to see what can come of them in a few years.
    LOVE that pot.

Last year I went to see the bonsai collection at the North Carolina Aboretum, and they had an exposed root cascade Virginia creeper on display. So it has the potential to be a good bonsai with time. Weed species have the advantage of being tough as nails.

Awesome video! Also, that ant at 5:45 is a queen! You can tell by how large and flat on top the middle body section (thorax) is

  • @Myhyperfixation

Queen ant! Looks like camponotus, and probably found your pot to nest in after her nuptial flight last fall. She may have laid her initial eggs, and you just found her home, lol.
No worries. None will be able to make it to adult ant status, without the queen there to feed them.
Also hoping to see the nightshade soon. Wondering if you prune it more than once a year, with how fast these turds grow 🤣

I did exactly the same today with mine. I had it for several years, and it has never been repotted. So I guess you know what it looked like 🫣 I root pruned quite hard, put in better substrate, and keep protected for a month, than outside it goes again. Thank you for the video 🙏

I realize while watching : Bonsai root pruning is like sculpture - you remove whatever is not what you want, and what remains is a bonsai nebari. These grow all around our property and I do have a bonsai specimen. Good clip & grow material, and I think the pot is perfect. not sure about your front, but . . . .

Sounds like the Virginia Creeper is creeping you out! First a crane fly larvae, then a black garden ant queen, then bumpy roots!! Living up to it's name!

I live in an apartment with no place on my patio, which is quite large , to put my trees in after repotting. Is this going to be really detrimental to them? If I wait until it gets warmer I may miss the window for repotting. The only sheltered area I have is right up next to the building somewhat under the roof overhang. They are starting to bud out now . Temperatures are varying from 1 c at night to 9 in daytime.

      @Stettafire 7 месяцев назад

Hi, your temps are similar to mine. In all honestly I think it depends on the tree. For most ducidious trees like maples etc you're fine to repot now (so long as you're not due nighttime temps of >0C for the next few days). For warmer trees I wouldn't.
