The SHPEP organization is amazing in closing the gap of healthcare providers that come from underserved and/or minority upbringings. I will be applying for the 2023 summer and I am super excited! Thank you for this video Austin!!
I don’t mean to sound ungrateful but for anyone considering applying, if you have access to dentists/physicians to shadow at home please don’t waste your time with this program. If you lack providers to shadow, be absolutely sure the program will allocate shadowing and have a backup if not. This program is a waste of time. I was in the medical pathway. First, despite information online saying we’d get clinical hours and shadowing, I only got 6 clinical hours and probably no shadowing at this point. The dental pathway however did get pretty good shadowing, I expect they’ll get close to 50 by the program’s end. At my site we essentially just got Biology 2 lectures. And everything else they “taught” us is easily googleable. Can’t believe I turned down higher paying research opportunities for this. Even summer classes would be a better use if your time than this. Only kinda pro was the stipend (actually more like 1700 once you account for stuff like meals) but most research opportunities pay better. Please don’t participate in this! A program like this in actuality should be targeted toward high school students, not college students.
