I agree Noam, Julian has been and is being subjected to torture. I have contacted the Australian Foreign Minister's office about Julian's case on several occasions to argue the case for his release and repatriation to Australia. I am happy to tell you that pressure is growing from across the political landscape to obtain justice for Julian. I also agree with many of your other observations.

As messed up and divided as the US is, the lack of citizen response regarding Julian still astonishes me. The one thing US citizens seem to universally agree on is press freedom and freedom of speech. I can only assume most US citizens just have no idea about Julian. We are such an irresponsible country - both the government and the citizens. Our general disengagement regarding our military is another example of this irresponsibility… sometimes it even seems mandatory military service would be preferable if it meant US citizens would pay closer attention and hold ourselves accountable

At the moment a façade of democracy is being maintained in many countries. But in the US, for example, all of the traditional democratic institutions of change have been captured by the oligarchy that controls the strings of our puppet politicians. We now have manipulated elections (big money advertising, gerrymandering, etc), a paid-off congress, politically appointed judiciary (especially the Supreme Court), and corporate-owned and -controlled mass media. It's pretty clear (to me) that the increasingly blatant repressive measures being taken today are being done to test how much the ruling elite can get away with and still avoid a massive uprising. They've gotten away with quite a lot, in my view. Most of the people are still reveling in their electronic slumber, preoccupied with spectacle and tribal bickering.
