If anyone is watching this and has an upcoming surgery with general anesthesia, then DO NOT WORRY! I had an Otoplasty surgery yesterday and it was my first time going under and I was scared half to death. My blood pressure spike when my nurse took it. I wish I would have known then what I know now. My CRNA just gave me what he called an “IV margarita” before we even left my room and let me tell you I don’t even remember two minutes after that. I don’t remember walking to the OR, getting really put to sleep. Nothing! It was the best most surreal experience. Hi, I really loved your presentation! It addressed the anxieties I am feeling. I am pre-op for a mastectomy, and was wondering as a 63 year old woman and a type 2 diabetic with a history of maintaining a good A1C should I worry about general anesthesia? I am in pretty good health l, very busy, and walk an average of 1/2 hour every other day. I am not obese and generally feel good.. ps: I expect to be under general anesthesia for approximately 6 to 8 hours. Does how long you are put to sleep affect the affects of anesthesia? Mari🤷🏻♀️

anesthesia is the safest it's been in history. just don't ask how it works because nobody knows. be honest with the preop assessment, except they won't document some of it and you'll need to repeat it to your anesthesiologist team day-of. many don't react to versed at all, and most experience burning into their veins from propyfol. known issues and versed is still used the most, and the admin rate for propyfol isn't slowed to reduce discomfort. nope, no reason to be afraid. enjoy the medical gaslighting and physicians too busy to take you or your concern seriously. great video and you cover topics well. i've got rational fears and i empathize with everyone going under soon. good luck!
Thanks for this. Have my second surgery in 2 months coming up. TERRIFIED of general anessthesia. Did great last time, hoping for the same in the next 4 weeks!
I haven't been put to sleep since I was 6 yrs old for a drooped eyelid operation. I remember throwing up all night, after the operation. They keptvypu in the hospital for 2- 3 days back then
@@antoniod yeah but during conscious sedation pain is usually blocked through local anesthesia. My concern is how do we know that general anesthesia actually blocks pain rather than just paralyzes the patient and makes them not remember the pain, seeing as local anesthesia is not typically used in conjunction with general anesthesia.
the problem is that anesthesia is an afterthought as far as patient being informed and given options...they wait until your all hooked up and ready the need you to sign off on a form? totally freaked me out for days after never again ...3 days recovering from the poison 2 weeks for my mouth and throat from fighting...felt like I lost a fight for a 2 hour procedure
Sarah I enjoyed this video I am not your typical subscriber and I don’t subscribe to many pages. I am an adult with CP and I’ve had plenty of surgeries over the years. I’m back from the old days where they gave you the giant premed needle into your upper thigh and then the old black anesthesia mask where I always got sick after anesthesia and sometimes while being put under. If it’s not too forward to say you are absolutely gorgeous and I’ve never had an anesthesiologist or CRNA who looks like you. 🙂 I had a total hip replacement about 17 years ago when I was relatively young for somebody with CP to have a replacement. I had which I believe twilight or you know probably epidural sedation. I told the anesthesiologist when he asked me if I had any questions or fears I don’t wanna wake up queasy and I don’t want to wake up dead, Because if I wake up queasy I’m going to wish I was dead. No joke he thought it was funny though. Funny story I wonder if you had an experience like this with any of your patients. I was told the entire time I was on the operating table under anesthesia I had the hiccups. I was also told that three other people had the same experience the month I had my hip replacement. That was freaky to me. I also liked in this video that you wore your scrubs. I have friends that make fun of me because I like to wear scrubs around the house if I’m not going out because they’re so easy to put on with my replaced hip. I think your videos are really cool and it’s nice to see somebody that loves what they do. I’ve had a a lot of good care from many great nurses over the years and I think you need to say that to people I always try to when I could. But keep making videos because they’re very informative even if you’re not in the industry of nursing, CRNA or healthcare. Hope you read this and if you respond that would be very cool. I will have a general sedation surgery at 6 September. I don't even have concerns about the operation itself, i think it's interesting that they're going up my ureter and laser away the kidney stones that just don't want to come down. The primary fear i have is to actually be "forced" asleep. I know we do that every day. When we go to sleep, a couple of minutes later we are gone. But to have that forced on you is kind of unsettling, just because I never have gone through that. Also, i wonder if I would stop breathing. I wonder that, if nervous signals are impeded to the point that you can't feel anything anymore, why doesn't that stop the autonomous system too ? Also, what if they would notice I'm just not sleeping deep enough and still have a bit of consciousness, they'd keep giving me more and more... could this cause any complications ? My heart is a bit weaker doe to a very mild enlarged hart episode due to a coronary vain being narrow, but when they put a stent in it, my heart remodeled itself but it feels a bit weaker than before. I wonder if that is a concern. let's say those are my primal fears.

I've woken up during surgery 3 times, most recent was sinus surgery in January. I felt and heard the crunches, 2 of them! It was a bit traumatic to say the least. I recently had a failed d&c which they were very careful to make sure I slept thru it, thank God. Its a good thing because what should have been a 30 min procedure turned into a 2 hour laparscopic search and repair.

Awe I’m sorry your feeling so stressed! The going to sleep part is pretty quick and not painful. Let them know your a little anxious and they will give you a med before you go back to OR to help with anxiety. Sometimes waking up can be a little unpredictable! Hello Doc, I have few questions about general anesthesia and it's safety. I'm really terrified of going under General Anesthesia I have surgery scheduled next week (adenoidectomy + septoplasty) but I'm really scared to go under GA. I have this irrational fear that I won't wake up from it. Though I'm a healthy and athletic (22 yrs old) male, the thought of losing control over my senses terrifies me. My resting heart rate has always been around 45-55bpm. I don't have any medical conditions except for some fluctuations in my BP, it was around (130/85) when I went for routine health check up last time. All my other blood work (Major surgical profile) appears to be normal. (Alhamdulillah) I've been cleared by the anesthesiologist as being 'fit for surgery under GA' This is the first time I'm going under and I have no idea how it feels. However my sister underwent GA for some cosmetic surgery without having any adverse reaction. So hopefully I can make it without any complications too (In sha Allah) I know general anesthesia is quite safe (especially for my age and health condition plus I'm getting my procedure done by an experienced ENT surgeon [with 42 years of experience] in a reputed hospital in my city) but still I can't seem to get over my fear. I have this fear that while they give me propofol everything will suddenly go all black and it scares me. Though the anesthesialogist examined my mouth and said I have 'adequate mouth opening' and normal airway) but what if something goes wrong like if they have difficulty putting the breathing tube in time? Will I die as I won't be breathing on my own, how long can a person breathe on his own after being given general anesthesia? Also I read that anesthesia is nothing like sleep it's more like a coma and that freaked me out so much. What if I never return from coma? Is that a possibility? I read a news about a French footballer (Jean Pierre Adams) in 1982 went into coma due anesthesia error and stayed in vegetative for 39 years and then died. I just don't want to embarrass myself or my parents by trying run to away or resist while being taken to the operating room. Is there any way they can calm me down before taking me to the operating room? I've heard versed (Midazolam) helps with anxiety and calms the patient. But my anxiety and fear is severe and I'm afraid it won't have much affect on me. I can't even avoid this surgery as it's severely effecting my hearing by blocking my Eastuchian tube. Thankyou.
@@Me-ev5fn we also do not do any pre-op testing if not indicated. It’s definitely impossible to ensure no bad outcome will ever occur - all we can do is “optimise” you. I tell people there are always risks with anesthesia!! So you have to decide if the benefits out weigh the risks

I would have been happy to be awake and have a Pain Killing Injection, but here in the UK if you Have a Teaspoon of Calpol once a Year, then you're a Drug Addict !!!
I had a layrngospasm 3 years ago have sleep apnea. I was more propopol sux and LMA re placed.im scared bad and think ill die with my endoscopy and lingual tonsil surgery coming up 😭😭😭
I’m so sorry you had that experience! But you can let your provider know & they will take all the precautions for you!!
@@TheWildFam could it happen again if they know and take precautions? 😭😭
@@melissabrill8367 still a possibility but the chances are definitely much less!
@@TheWildFam well that's still nerve wrecking.. I'm convinced I'm going to die
Are you a anesthesiologist
i have my surgery Monday for my mouth , i’m completely terrified. the last 3 days i haven’t slept and i’m just a mess. i’m not scared for ANYTHING you talked about in this video, i trust everything that’s happening but what’s it feel like when your falling asleep from general anesthesia? i’m scared it’s going to feel like i’m on drugs when falling asleep or even when waking up . it’s 8 seconds long as everyone says BUT what’s it going to be like for those 8 seconds. am i going to see stuff ? feel a certain way or anything in those lines. even if that’s what’s going to happen i need to know. i have ptsd with drugs and it’s just terrifying to me and i don’t know what to do. any tips ANYTHING?
Awe I’m sorry your feeling so stressed! The going to sleep part is pretty quick and not painful. Let them know your a little anxious and they will give you a med before you go back to OR to help with anxiety. Sometimes waking up can be a little unpredictable! But often times you don’t remember a lot of it
You’re such a pro, I wish I was your patient for my surgery next week at U of M :/
Does the anti naseau* cocktail seemed to help quite a bit?
@@TheWildFam ok thanks for answering back so quickly lady! Wish I had your cool as a cucumber nerves 😎😂
I have a fear of getting blood draws and IVs but I am not afraid of getting my ears pierced why is that?
My biggest fear is what happens when you are under anesthesia because I have a laser surgery for kidney stone removal next week.
Do you dream under anesthesia or what happens
I am so nervous.
Don’t be nervous! You can dream but not always. Will be the best nap of your life :)
Does the risk of general anesthesia go up with the duration of surgery?
Yes. Definitely best for the patient for surgeon to be as efficient as possible
@@TheWildFam I mean some cosmetic procedures can be upwards of 6 to 7 hours, and a surgeon must take his or her time more than anything.
@@TheWildFamdoes obesity risk anesthesia?

Quick question have you heard of or ever experienced the hiccup situation I mentioned earlier? Also as a general question are inhaled/general anesthesia kind of a thing of the past? Did you think my comment to my anesthesiologist was funny? Lastly thank you for replying. Everyone can learn something from this video and it is nice that you encourage people to speak up for themselves and that you want them to interact with their CRNA as a collaborative process. It is nice that medicine is finally getting there. Keep up the good work and keep encouraging people. All the best! 😉🙂😎👍
@@TheWildFam many thanks for the reply and the clarification. It means a lot that you reply to people that subscribe. You seem to be really awesome. Have an excellent day.🙂😎😉
@@TheWildFam last question I swear. But I think this is such a really cool video being that I’ve had so much surgery over the years. I can’t believe more people haven’t been commenting on this. Especially if they want to become a cRNA. Before you became a cRNA did you have any preconceived fears about anesthesia? And if so have they all faded or do you still have some nerves being that you seem to be very good at your job who would you trust to work with you other than you as a cRNA to put you under? Have an awesome day.👍😎🙂
@@TheWildFam while I love the original concept of what Facebook and all these platforms were supposed to be I don’t much like what they have become which I think you alluded to in part of your video. I have to say though you’re channel is cool and you must be an intensely fierce person this has been a lot of fun for me because in the age of Covid sometimes you just watch RUclips videos just to get by but stay fierce because you are totally awesome have a great day. 😛😎😉❤️
Im afraid im gonna die while being under
Everything has risks but we are very advanced now. You will blink out and wake up feeling a little groggy but you will have overcome the worst part! Lol
Ugh, im so afraid of GA. I'm having surgery on Monday. I'm recovering from covid 3 weeks ago. Alot of weird symptoms since getting covid, super fast heart beat, lower BP and just found out I have Nutcracker Syndrome..... am I going to be okay? I'm having my breast implants removed, I need them out asap
Are you an md or Cana?
CRNA!
Is there really a plan? Seems to me it’s on the fly
Most definitely a plan, they plan for a straightforward surgery and also plan if there are issues.
I’m going to get gender affirming top surgery sometime. I’m worried that they will give me too much and I won’t ever wake up and I will see my body and die in my sleep
A lot of people feel this way before anesthesia.. take it one step at a time and trust those taking care of you!
I was turned away by my anesthesiologist because i came to the appointment barely able to walk because i took too much anti-anxiety medication. So no, it is not always safe and it can kill you. These people are way down-playing it.
Definitely should not take any medications before surgery if not instructed to! Glad they caught it 🙌🏽
@@TheWildFam hi ! I need to be put under this week 😔 for an outpatient procedure, I'm currently on lunesta 3mg 900 mg of gabapentin and 29 mg of Lisinopril... What are the dangers please,?
Well why would you take so many meds before surgery like that
@@TheWildFamcan it happen that anesthesia overdose happens and you don't just wake up ever?😢
@@evertonclayton32your nurse scheduler should have gone over all meds you take and told you which ones to stop and what you can take the week prior to surgery.
Is there a chance you’ll Wake up During Surgery???
My fear is my breathing stops or heart stops during sleep
All that is very closely monitored while in surgery.
(Alhamdulillah) I've been cleared by the anesthesiologist as being 'fit for surgery under GA'
This is the first time I'm going under and I have no idea how it feels. However my sister underwent GA for some cosmetic surgery without having any adverse reaction. So hopefully I can make it without any complications too (In sha Allah)
I know general anesthesia is quite safe (especially for my age and health condition plus I'm getting my procedure done by an experienced ENT surgeon [with 42 years of experience] in a reputed hospital in my city) but still I can't seem to get over my fear.
Thankyou.
I need to go under this week too and im terrified ! How did it go for you ?
@evertonclayton32 how did everything go?
Sugery doesn’t hurt me at all
Going under anesthesia is not going to sleep is it? Its a controlled coma.
It’s often referred to that by the non medical person! But technically no it’s not
Is someone sleeping around you? I hear them snoring!
I fear cardiac arrest or heart attack😩
Do you have a cardiac history?
@@Me-ev5fn we also do not do any pre-op testing if not indicated. It’s definitely impossible to ensure no bad outcome will ever occur - all we can do is “optimise” you. I tell people there are always risks with anesthesia!! So you have to decide if the benefits out weigh the risks
I love going under!
My biggest fear is going to sleep.
Because there is a greater chance of death from anesthesia than the surgeon.
Don't listen to them. You might die!!!!
