I have notice that once you have entered your MMSI number, it can not be changed without sending the radio back to the manufacture. I can understand this for a fitted radio but not for a hand held. I would want the handheld radio for use on a number of different boats so why cant I change the MMSI locally, when I use it on a different boat?

Disregard my last message. I misunderstood that the MMSI number is is actually and Identification number for the radio, not for the vessel its on.

The MMSI number is associated with the handheld and the registered owner of the handheld. So I'm assuming if you ever sold it to someone else they would have to have the MMSI number reset and a new MMSI number which has been obtained from OFCOM entered. The process of using OFCOM means the MMSI is registered and you pay an annual fee for it.

MMSI - Maritime Mobile Service Identity, you get it from proper office in your country. You have to register the radio.
