If you want something you've never had before do things you've never done before. I thought that was a good roll of the dice by Humphries. Just had my first XC race of the season last week. It hasn't got any easier. 😂 these guys were flying.
I ran a cross country race back in the 1980's in late October where the weather was just above 32 degrees and it was freezing rain. I went out in the first 2 miles in 10 minutes flat and then my legs cramped up and I struggled to maintain 6 mile pace from the 2 mile mark until the last 3 miles of the 5 mile race. I still finished in second place but the pain was unbearable. I learned a lesson that day, don't go out to hard when its freezing rain and the same things goes for going out to fast in very hot weather. We need to know our limitations and pace ourselves evenly when the weather is not ideal. Thanks for sharing this race.
Running is a great metaphor for life. Many people think if they hope and dream and believe in themselves enough they can achieve anything. Running is a more realistic teacher. You do the hard training, set realistic goals, and then race at a prescribed pace and achieve the result that you deserve. No pie in the sky stuff. Just realistic hard work, sober judgement and good execution in the race.
Tom Humphries made that race! What a great effort, Dave Bedford'esk, Bulldog Spirit, had a plan, stuck to it & a very credible 4th, brilliant! fair play to the 1st three for being able to save enough for the last 200 meters.
I entered a 5k trail race about 16 years ago. I was entered in the stroller division so I was pushing my young son in a jogging stroller. The first mile of the race dropped about 300 feet downhill. I could see the leader just ahead of me at about 1/2 a mile in. I decided to just go for it and let my legs and the stroller carry me down the hill. I passed the lead bicycle at about 3/4 mile in and then I took the lead in the race at the bottom of the hill. However, we had over a mile to climb after that so I let the leader pass me back and just struggled to even make it up the hill with the 100 lb stroller. I had a 4:56 first mile and a 9:00 minute second mile. At the end of the race the winner of the race came over to and said he was shocked to see the stroller come past him on the way down the hill. We had a good laugh over it and I saw him often as he came to all of our local races. The runner who won that race was Bobby Mack. A really fantastic runner and a really wonderful person. I was so glad to see this video of him. He is definitely a runner we all looked up to in the Raleigh NC area.
This is a Men's Open Grade Race. EVERY runner from age 20 on, can be considered a "Pro" runner. What differentuates one from another is whether they have sports clothing/shoe contracts or other sponsorships, to earn money. Or even membership of a special Club team ie Nike, New Balance etc. As this was a Cross Country, International race, I doubt there was even prize money for the top finishers. You need to stop thinking about classifying runners as "Pro" runners versus amateur. As I said, ALL are classified as Pro. Yes, a group of runners get called "Elite" and get special privledges when they race in the very big events. eg Top Marathons. Those "elite" often get to start as a special group, at the front of 20,000 runners. Or, in Track Races, those "elites" get invited by the Meet Organisers to compete in featured races. Yes, often prize money is on offer as well. But again, runners in lower grade races are still professional but probably won't win any money because they are not "top" runners.
Tom's strategy of pulling away from the pack on his own was too soon and risky. He should have stayed with the pack just behind any other leader for half the race at leased, maybe even longer, then maybe pull away heading for the finish line, because he doesn't have a sprint finish he can rely on

Courageous leader...just out kicked late.

Your title makes no sense. He didn’t win the race but he DID defeat the 9 times champion.
what do you expect, it's even a 2013 race made out to be recent

Not sure it's open grade it's Europe vs America vs gb

Tom was doomed before the race even started according to this deadpan commentary
